Downloaded files instantly disappear on completion

When I download files (regardless of type: pdf, jpg, exe, etc.) the download shows progress, the arrow turns green and indicates that the file completed, but there is no file. If I pick desktop as the location, it will show up there briefly, and then instantly disappear upon completion. Changing my download location (for example, download folder) has no effect. "Open containing folder" produces no action. Trying to open the file produces no action. Searching for the file by name gives no result, the file doesn't exist. (Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. OS = WinXP.)
Thanks.

Could you try this?
# In the [[Location bar autocomplete|Location bar]], type '''about:config''' and press '''Enter'''. The about:config "''This might void your warranty!''" warning page may appear.
# Click '''I'll be careful, I promise!''', to continue to the about:config page. A list of settings should appear
# Filter the list by typing in the search bar at the top. Type in ''scanWhenDone''. '''You should now find the "browser.download.scanWhenDone" preference'''.
#Double-click on that preference to set the value to ''false''.
#Next, try to download something and see if it still hangs.
Please reply and tell us whether this helped you!
If it doesn't work, reenable the pref that was disabled.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

  • Downloading files - can I block the empty file from appearing at all? I'm not talking about the .part file, but the one that disappears later anyways.

Let's say I'm downloading several files, for each file that I'm downloading two new files appear in my download folder. For 'vol1.rar' I have ''an empty'' 'vol1.rar' and a 'vol1.rar.part' file, same for 'vol2.rar', 'vol3.rar', etc.
I would like to block this empty 'vol1.rar' file from appearing at all - it disappears after the download is finished anyway, and the .part file gets renamed with the actual name.
I'm downloading files to my desktop, from where I move them to the folders I want them in - having this disappearing 2nd file messes up the order I download the files in - if I add a new file after one of the files I was downloading has finished, the file be placed in the empty spot that the finished file has created, making it harder for me to move to the correct folder.
A lot of people have asked if it was possible to turn off the .part file, but I haven't seen a single thread about the empty file instead.
I know this file isn't necessary, because I moved it to another folder/deleted it many times before the download was finished and the real file was still fine.
So, any ideas as to how to block this file?

I don't believe there is any way to prevent file downloading if you allow internet access at all. as Király says, whatever they download and install will be limited to the guest account and will go poof on the logout.
however you can disable CD/DVD and external drives access. some of it can be done by enabling parental controls on the guest account. for more options you can install server admin tools
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/ServerAdmin_Tools_105
and use workgroup manager to set further restrictions on the guest account.
P.S. workgroup manager can also forbid guest to mount disk images which will effectively make it impossible to install any programs at all even in the guest account.

  • Downloaded files disappear after download finishes

I downloaded a file from several locations. Mozzila backup, evernote and other downloads
The download finishes, but the file disapears afterwards from my system and can't be found back.
The download should be on the location as requested.

I have this problem too, I have selected the downloads folder, when the download is finished it disappears, I have done a search of the files, and they simply are no longer on my computer. How do I fix this. I looked at the above articles and all that was suggested was to change the strings, but didn't say what to change the strings too. I have already deleted firefox and then redownloaded it and reinstalled it. How do you fix this?
I have reset everything to default, I have eliminated cleared the database, cleaned the registry, reinstalled and the files still disappear after they are downloaded
I have done the steps here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config
and this one and still nothing: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_save_or_download_files

  • Itunes not downloading files completely :/

I am having a common problem- purchasing song files that end up not playing the complete song in the itunes player.
I have deleted the song files from itunes, and downloaded them again via my purchase history in itunes store. Some songs play a little bit more than what the pervious download was, but still not complete. Does this mean I just have to keep downloading the songs again and again until I get lucky and obtain the full file(s)?
I have emailed support but have not recieved a reply yet :/

I can get the download page, but the section you need to actually get the download (where you put your e-mail) is replaced by one of those "can't connect/having difficulty to locate" pages.
Have another try, diva. (I was getting that in IE 8, but the download controls are showing for me now.)

  • HT1349 I have a large Windows iTunes library (18k+ songs, 650+ movies, 2.4K TV shows) and since upgrading to iTunes 11 files are disappearing from my library. Some music files re-appear in the cloud which means I have to re-download and re-convert to MP3.

iTunes 11 is rapidly becoming a disaster for me. I have a dedicated Windows 7 machine running iTunes to service 3 Apple TV's, 2iPhones, 2iPods, and an iPad. Itunes 11 is very sluggish with my large library and has now started 'losing' files to the cloud.  This means that music I purchased in 2005 is being removed from my library and subsequently seems to become available as a ne cloud download.  This may well be because I convert all ACC files to MP3 and delete the ACC (my ears are too old to care about the reduction in quality). Either way, it's detrsoying my playlists and means I have to re-download files.
Does anyone know how to stop this?  I have no interest in the cloud (my library is too big and contains hundreds of ripped CD's and Vinyl records that can't be matched).
    Thanks

Because back in the early days very few devices supported AAC so converting to MP3 allowed me to use iTunes and other devices (like a $1000 dollar MP3 player with a 3.5" hard disk drive that pre-dated iPods ) as well as my gen 1 and 2 iPods.  I can't hear the difference (I'm old...) so the files being smaller is still an advantage (even though I have 64Gb iPods and iPhones these days.  Anyway, the major issue is iTunes deleting the MP3's and messing up my playlists because the file it downloads just goes in the library - not the original playlists. The secondary issue is how do I know it's truly replacing all the files it deletes. It's just scary and I don't like it.
BTW, I'm not anti-cloud and in fact use iCloud extensively with my iPhones/Apple TV's for photo sharing/backups but iCloud is useless for media sharing. I have just over 2tb of media data shared on my iTunes server (and remotely accessible on my iPhone/iPad using WebDav to my home server).
...and none of my media is pirated. I have crates of vinyl, CD's,DVD's, and Blu-Rays along with thousands of iTunes store receipts!

  • When I download files from the internet, it shows the file downloading in the download box, but then as soon as it's done it just disappears. How can I fix this?

This has been happening for several weeks.

It sounds like perhaps the file doesn't have an extension that the system recognizes. Is this all files, or just one specific one, and if so, which? What is the name (and extension, if it has one) of the downloaded file? What kind of file do you *expect* it to be? (PDF, or whatever). Renaming a file with the appropriate extension can often fix that kind of problem.

  • On Mac OSX, Firefox partial download files (.part) are remaining in my downloads folder, even when the download completes successfully.

Starting about a month ago, when downloading files using Firefox on my Mac (OSX 10.6.4, FF 3.6.12 currently), my downloads folder is showing .part files for successfully downloaded files. They cannot be deleted, and only show up in Downloads "stack". In Finder, the Downloads folder show no evidence of the .part files. I cannot delete the .part files either. Only a reboot seems to clear the problem.
It is as if the .part files aren't actually there, even though they are being displayed in the Downloads stack.

Open firefox and in the menu, go to:
    Tools > Options
Choose the "General" section (light switch icon)
There should be a downloads block there. It says something like "Save files to [_____________][Browse...]"
you should be able to click on browse and see where the folder is located. Then hit CANCEL (so you don't change it by mistake before you have found it for sure)
Once you have found the files, if you would like, you can go back in and change the location setting to somewhere you would prefer if you do not like where they are saving to.

  • Downloaded files disappear

It seems some zip files get automatically unzipped and then the zip is nowhere to be found. How do I adjust the settings to do with downloading files? Any help would be great...rob

You can use the Finder to "Archive" any single file or a folder of files to create a .zip (compressed) file of those contents.
