Downloaded Firefox 4; type in search term; no action takes place

Firefox 4 comes up as my start up page. When I type in a term and hit enter, the program takes no action whatsoever. In order to search, I have to use my dropdown menu to go to the previous Firefox, which then works normally. I would like to have the new Firefox 4 work or return to the previous version. I have windows 7.

If you have AVG Safe Search installed, disable it in the Add-ons | Extensions menu (click the Firefox button to go there).
It blocks use of the Enter key in the location bar.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Full Screen mode with all toolbars hidden.
* Press F11 to toggle full screen mode (Firefox/File > Full Screen)
If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key, that should make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
* If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" (Linux, Windows)
* If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
* If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

My Firefox App deletes new search terms on second search.

Firefox deletes new search terms on second search. If first search is for New York, I get results for New York. If I add Giants to New York or even if I change the search to Chicago Cubs, and search, the second search terms are erased and the first search terms return with the first search results. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and checked all settings dozens of times. I saw someone else had the same problem but there were no responses.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

Font Type for Search Terms, Other Items Suddenly Changed in Safari

Certain text items in Safari 3.0.4 - those that are normally bolded, such as search terms in hyperlinks or the 'Inbox' in Yahoo Mail (when there is unopened mail) - appear to be bolded not in Arial but in ArialBlack, which makes them appear extremely bolded. I did not change any settings under in Safari, such as Preferences>Appearance; it just started happening. Is there a setting on my end (Safari) or a keystroke combination (that I might have hit) that might have affected this particular font setting in Safari?

Quit Safari and move the 'com.apple.Safari.plist' file to your desktop.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ 'com.apple.Safari.plist'
Launch Safari and reset it's Preferences.

In Firefox 3, I could type history search terms in the URL bar and pressing enter would take me straight there, bypassing Google. How can I get 4 to do this?

I could even search within websites this way, say by typing France wiki and it would take me the wikipedia page for France, even if I had never gone there. (Or sometimes, if I did a search with the term wiki, it would take me to a specialised wiki for that topic, even if I'd never been to that site before.

Just downloaded Firefox 4.0; Google search box is failing to complete searches and then to take me to websites suggested. HUGELY FRUSTRATING!!! Want to go back to version 3.6.16 but am unable

Google toolbar white search box (top left of screen) will offer suggestions to complete searches (as it used to do): for example type 'l' and 'lloyds tsb' will come up. When I click on the offered 'lloyds tsb' nothing happens; on version 3.6.13 and previous versions I would be taken direct to website selected on click. Now I have to type in whole of desired website: not just 'l' but all of 'lloyds tsb', for example, before being redirected to where I want to go.
Have used Firefox for ages; so frustrated that I'm contemplating returning to Internet Explorer or trying Google Chrome.
I've tried reinstalling 4.0 three time and no joy.
Help me or lose me!

Downloaded firefox and can't get rid of ebay in search window

Everytime i have downloaded firefox, ebay is in search column. If i go ahead and type a desired address in search such as cement it carries me to items related to cement for sale on ebay site. No matter what, firefox carries me to ebay. Where does this contaminant come from and how do I get rid of it?

Firefox has the search engine selected as eBay. You can't get rid of it, but you can select a different search engine such as Google or Yahoo so if you want to search for that term, it'll pull it up on the search engine of your choice.
Simpy click the eBay logo next to the search field and select your choice.

It used to work! Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

Google search does not search after entering search term and pressing enter.

When I type a search term into Google and then hit Enter, the page is inert. It does not go to search results. Or if I type a search term and select the Instant search suggested term and hit Enter, the search results page does not appear. If I go into Google settings and turn off Instant, then the Google Search works, but it is a waste of time to always have to turn off Google Instant. There is some conflict between Firefox and Google Instant because there is no problem using Google Instant in Internet Explorer.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

When there are several tabs open, why does the search always take place on the 2nd tab (the first tab seems never to change from the home page) despite my selecting a different tab in which to do a google search?

I have Mozilla Firefox 10.0. When I open it, it correctly opens on the homepage in the first tab. Once I have another, or several, tabs open, no matter which tab is active, any google search I do immediately takes place in tab No 2. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I go to e.g. tab 4 to do a search (because I wish to compare with the webpage open in tab 2), yet it always now does the search in tab 2. This is very irritating. There must be some setting that has gone pear-shaped, but where/which? Any suggestions? Thanks.

The change between Firefox 3.6.* and Firefox 4 is how location bar search works. In Firefox 3.6 it uses Google "Browse by name" search. With the browse by name search, it performs a Google search and if there is a clear match it will take you to the site, otherwise it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it just performs a Google search if you type something which is not recognised as a URL.
To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.
