Downloaded iOS Updates location?

Hi All.
Anybody know the location (path) to where the downloaded (via iTunes) iOS updates are stored on local hard disks? I have downloaded, but not yet installed iOs 4.2.
I'd like to make backup copies of each iOS update so I can "backdate" if necessary.
Also, are older updates REPLACED by newer ones, or are they stored concurrently?
I have both iPad (1G) and iPod touch (4G). Are updates for each stored in same location?
As separate updates? Do they have identifiable names?
Thanks!

Yes, no and yes.
The iPod touch software is in the iPod Software Updates folder.

  • Unable to download iOS updates

I'm having issues with downloading iOS updates through iTunes. I tried downloading iOS 4.3 and recently 4.3.1 but no luck with either. Every single time I download an update through iTunes I get an error once the file has reached 100%. The error that I get is:
"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. The network connection timed out."
I also get an error code beside the update in iTunes. The error code is 3259.
I spent a lot of time on Google trying to find a solution but nothing. It seems like the common issue is that a virus scanner or firewall is preventing the file from being properly processed. I don't have a firewall or anti-virus enabled, so I know this isn't the issue.
I'm on OS X 10.6.7 with iTunes 10.2.1 (latest versions for both).
To me this issue doesn't have anything to do with my iPhone. It has something to do with iTunes or a setting on my computer. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

You've got an iPhone 4, correct? Here's a link for a direct download of the iOS 4.3.1 file. Download it directly & follow the instructions to install on your phone:

I suspect something wrong with your iTunes installation. After you update your phone, follow these instructions to completely remove iTunes & reinstall it. Things must be done in a certain order:

  • How do I download iOS updates in town to bring home?

How do I download iOS updates at the library in town so I can bring my MacBook Pro home and update all my household iOS devices?
And why does my iTunes show the iPhone update from 7.1. to 7.1.1 as a 1.22 Gb file and my nephew's iPhone shows it as about 22 Mb?
I live in a wonderful rural area of the Rocky Mountains and high speed Internet here is 1.5 Mb DSL, so downloading the complete update from scracth for all our household iOS devices is very time-consuming. Qwest, before they were bought by CenturyLink, believed that their provision of 1.5 Mb DSL was God's gift to us and we should be happy. I want the REA equivalent passed for the Internet and require all those gouging telecomm companies to get on the stick with broadband to rural areas so we're not so in the dark out here.

You can't. The downloads are different for each different device.

The file that you would download in iTunes is the full and complete iOS 7.1.1 update. The OTA update using WiFi is an incremental update and therefore is much, much smaller than the whole update as you can see. You would be much better off taking your devices to the library where you can have free WiFi and download the updates for all device OTA.
I just finished updating my iPad 3 and my iPhone 5S at home over WiFi and it took a total of about 15 minutes for both devices.

  • HT1414 how to restore iPhone 4 without downloading iOS update

How to restore iPhone 4 without downloading iOS 7.6 update?

If Find My Phone is turned on, login to iCloud.com, using your computer, locate the phone, then erase it. This will remove the passcode without having to restore the phone.
If you can't do that, you'll have to force the phone into recovery mode, & restore it.

  • Is there a script to download iOS updates?

I have a Mac and several iOS devices.  I have the Mac Yosemite Server app.  As I understand it, the Cache system will maintain a backup of each iOS update that I download, but since each update seems to be unique for each iOS device, that doesn't do much good except if I need to 'download' the file again for the same device.  Is there a way, with a script or a Mac app, to schedule these downloads during downtime, either late at night or during the day when I'm at work?
I could envision, for security and propriety's sake, that I might need to dock each of my devices to my Mac to initiate the connection.  But once it has detected that an update is available, it allows me to schedule the download into the Cache for a future update.  Once the download is scheduled, I could disconnect the device from the Mac.
There are several reasons why this might be useful.  Myself, I've been getting horrendous download rates for iOS 8.3 updates.  I have a 12Mbps DSL connection, and the 1.44 Mb file for the iPod Touch should take 24 minutes at best speed, if I've calculated correctly.  My downloads have run for 7-10 HOURS and not finished, and I'm pretty sure it isn't me.  So I'd like to schedule things for better downtime.  Other conditions might be if I wanted to plan for the update, but I want to stream a movie or TV show now.
I saw that another user has a satellite connection, and has unlimited downloads in the middle of the night, so he'd like to schedule the downloads.  People suggested download management software, or an odd hack.  I was thinking that the Server app supports Xcode, so there might be a solution there.
And perhaps someday this feature might be added to the Server app itself.  After all, it benefits Apple to have people access their servers during slower times, if such a thing exists.
Further: what if the Server app, or just the Mac OS itself, could poll the Apple servers periodically during a window of time that I specify, and get a response that either this was a good time to download files now, or there should be a good period in, say, 16 minutes.  Basically, have the two computers work out an appointment for the download, similar to making a reservation at a restaurant.  The Apple server doesn't even necessarily have to store my information about the appointment, just allocate a start time that my computer will take advantage of, and give my computer a passcode to access the appointment.  If my computer doesn't connect within, say, 60 seconds of that appointment time, the appointment is cancelled and my computer has to get a new appointment.  It could even be penalized, and not allowed to make a new appointment for at least 5 minutes.

  • I have just downloaded iOS update but this has locked my iPad screen. Screen shows iTunes symbol with white arrow and padlock below it. I have tried to reboot but I am unable to unlock screen. Can anyone help with this please.

I have downloaded an iOS update on my iPad air2 but it has locked the screen and I can only see the iTunes symbol with a white arrow and a padlock below it. I have tried turning the iPad off and on but the same screen reappears. Has anyone had a similar problem?

What that symbol indicates is that your iPad has gone into recovery mode and now it needs to be restored in order for you to be able to use it again. You can reboot from now until the cows come home and it will not do any good.
You do indeed need to plug your iPad into your computer and use iTunes to restore the device.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • HT1343 where to find the downloaded ios firmware located

please tell me how to find my downloaded ios firmwares on my imac

If support have a firmware they might be able to send it to you. But often in these situations they want the player returned. It's a shame that the base firmware isn't available for download.

  • Can you download iOS updates without the iPhone connected to your computer?

I'm trying to do the iOS 8 update for my phone - "Download Only" - and the pop-up window says "32 hours remaining!" Is there a way for me to continue the download without having the iPhone itself connected to iTunes?

Probably. Didn't try that myself, but once the download is going your iPhone should not need to remain connected.

  • Trying to Download IOS Update via ITunes

Hi.....I have an IPhone 4. Im not able to download the most recent IOS7.0.6 update via wireless and am trying to update via ITunes.Phone is plugged in to PC.  I have verified that I have the latest version of ITunes. However, when I go to file-devices,  Backup is greyed out and the only option is "Restore from Backup". What am I doing wrong??

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • My iphone4 is connected to my PC and the display is showing iTunes and connect lead, note, it failed to download IOS update. I'm being asked to restore factory settings on ITunes, if I do this will I lose all my photos, contacts, messages,

I have an iPhone4 and after being connected to my PC iTunes failed to update the IOS software. The phone display now shows the iTunes symbol and asking me to connect the lead. If I do so, iTunes detects phone in recovery mode and asks me to restore before I can use iTunes. If I select it, will it delete all my photos, videos, contacts and messages?   Please note:  I'm not an apple expert so would need help on this....
    regards   Haley Stone

Yes, due to Incomplete Software Update on your iPhone your Device is now in Recovery Mode and you cannot take a Backup now. But if you have taken a backup earlier then you can Restore that backup on your iPhone after you Reset your iPhone to Factory Settings.
