That didn' t fix it for me. and I also repaired and verified disk permissions that didn't help. So how do I do the next steps? Can you lay it out slowly for me please?

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with installing the latest iTunes update. I recommend following the steps below:
Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
When you get to the step to uninstall iTunes, it is important to uninstall iTunes and the related components in the order listed in the link for that step.

I have an ITunes account. I got it when I got my IPOD. I've thought about upgrading, but I didn't see any reason to buy a newer IPOD because they all come with so much stuff I don't want/need. Spotlight may be indexing your drive(s). Click the Spotlight icon at the right of your menubar; if it shows things being indexed, that's at least some of the reason.

The process is the same as with the older versions of iTunes. The only thing that's changed is how you get to the device page for your iPhone; you tap the iPhone button in the upper-right on the header bar now. Or you can go to the View menu and select "Show Sidebar" and things will be substantially the same as they were in earlier versions.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Then plug it in and let it fully charge.

How did your pictures get there in the first place? If they were synched to your phone from iPhoto, just synch them on again.
