Downloaded Yosemite, logged out of iPhoto, will I lose my photos upon reinstall?

So I just downloaded and installed Yosemite onto my MacBook Pro. I need to update my iPhoto but apparently I didn't use my usual Apple login to get it? When I try to update and put in my Apple ID, it says "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." Okay, not awful, I'll just delete it and reinstall it on my Apple ID. But I'm afraid I'll lose all of my photos because when I go into the iPhoto folder in my Finder, my old photos aren't there and I get the message "Last login: Mon Oct 20 16:26:51 on ttys (a bunch of numbers):iPhoto Library.photolibrary (my name)". Help? Will I lose my photos if I delete my current iPhoto? What do I do?

Drag the library to a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended on an external drive, delete iPhoto, and reinstall it.

  • If i unistall iphoto will i lose my photos?

My iPhoto application has become "damaged or is incomplete". The icon now has a crossed out circle. This happened when I installed iDVD 7.1.2 when I needed to burn an iMovie file to a disc. It did not come installed on my iMac (Late 2012) because I don't have a built in DVD drive.
I'm afraid to uninstall and reinstall iPhoto because I don't want to lose any of my photos.
    Any advise?
    Thanks!

Back them up and reinstall iPhoto. While the reinstallation process itself won't delete them, other things can.

  • If I force quite will i lose my photos in album

I'm trying to make a slide show.  Application is not responding.  If Iforce quite iPhoto, will I lose the photos in my album?

Hard to say but if you have to force quit then you have to do it - if you are luck you will lose nothing - if you are unlucky then you will have to go back to you backup from before this occurred - but you have no choice if you have to force quit

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Iphoto will not import my photos from my digital camera because it says it is having a problem downloading my photos. I'm using the same digital camera I have always had and have the current version of iphoto and am usuin snowleapord. Any thoughts?

iphoto will not import my photos from my digital camera because it says it is having a problem downloading my photos. I'm using the same digital camera I have always had and have the current version of iphoto and am using snowleapord 10.6.8. Any thoughts?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I upgraded to OS X Yosemite and now need to upgrade iPhoto. I have an Airport Time Capsule that I have not employed yet to backup all my (thousands of) photos. I know, I am a fool. That aside, will I lose my photos in the upgrade?

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite and now need to upgrade iPhoto. I have an Airport Time Capsule sitting on my desk that I have not yet employed to backup all my (thousands of) photos. I know, I am a fool. That aside, will I lose my photos in the upgrade? I am desperate to backup my photos and now wonder if I should revert back to my previous operating system. Help!

iPhoto Library is essentially a large datafile in which your photos are stored. iPhoto is an application you use to do things with the photos stored in the datafile. If you backup iPhoto Library then you have backed up all the photos stored in the library. It's iPhoto that links you to all those photos stored in iPhoto Library. All you need do is to copy iPhoto Library to a backup drive. If you are doing regular backups, then you are already making a copy of the iPhoto Library on the backup drive.

  • HT202664 my iphoto is under an old apple ID, how do I upgrade using my current ID? The current Iphoto is not working after the software upgrade. If I delete the iphoto app will i lose my photo library?

I have a MacBook pro I recently upgraded to OSX. iPhoto is now not working as it was purchased under an old apple ID and I cant find a way to use my current ID to upgrade it. Also if I delete iPhoto to then repurchase it, will I lose my photo library?

    1. iPhoto won’t run any differently based on the Apple ID it’s associated with, but can only be updated from that one.
    2. No. Back it up anyway.

  • It seems that the new version of iPhoto will no longer share photos between computers on the same network. Can anyone confirm this?

I have "automatically create previews" in the preferences UNCHECKED. Why is Aperture creating previews? For the screen image?
You might also need to turn Preview generation off for any existing Projects. Select the Project in the Projects pane and use the cog button at the top of the pane to uncheck 'Maintain Previews For Project'.

  • If i pressCommand Option when you launch iPhoto will i lose all my photos?

My photos are not backed up I have a mega amount and cannot lose them if I press command option when I launch Iphoto will i lose all my photos?

    No
But if you do not have a backup yor are 100% guaranteed to lose all of your files sooner or later. Things do happen and this may be the time. Your top priority should be to purchase an external hard drive at least 2 1/2 time as large as your main hard drive and start backing up with Time Machine or other back up ASAP
Rebuilding will not lose photos. It might reveal that you have already lost photos
The back up is the only real answer

Will I lose my photos in iPhoto if upgrade to a latest version? I have upgraded my system to Mavericks and now my iPhoto doesn't work. Can anyone help, please?

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • IPhoto will no longer import photos from any of my another cameras.

iPhoto will no longer import photos from any of my another cameras after importing photos from my iTouch.

Does the camera mount to the desktop so you can look to see what is there? Have you tried Image capture (in your applications folder) to import the photos? Have you tried unchecking hide previously imported to see what that shows? Do you have a USB card reader to try? When did you last reformat your memory card?
If you can get the photo off the card using any method do so and tehn use yoru camera's format command to reformat the card

  • Will I lose my photos when upgrading iPhoto after updating to Mavericks?

I recently upgraded to Mavericks and can't access iPhoto and need to upgrade. I currently have 9.3 but I did not back up my library. Will I lose my photos when I upgrade?

For this you can simply make a copy on the internal drive if you have space - that is enough for an upgrade - but you must have a large external drive and have a continuing backup system if your photos have any value at all to you  - Time Machine is a good start
