Downloading a subset of songs into Nano

I have a large library of songs on my Itunes pc(8,000). I bought a Nano that holds 1500 songs. How do I quickly select the songs that I wanted loaded on the Nano. Surely I don't have to drag one at a time. Please help.

If you can select the tracks by using a Smart Playlist (or more than one), you can either just drag that playlist or set iTunes to sync that playlist automatically.

  • Easiest Way to download songs into NANO

I have read ipod101 and listened to video info at the end the lady says the NANO is like a mirror to your Library so far I am downloading from my downloaded files in another folder and dragging them into the ipod file not sure if there is a quick and efficient way or is there a normal way everyone does it
Kinda confused thought the itunes would be more friendly

Not sure to get it right but the way i copy music from my computer to the ipod is the following (if it is what you want!):
In itunes the main window you use to play music stored on your computer is the "libray" it is the one you get when you start itunes and that sort all the music you have imported (copyed or downloaded).
Now on the left column of itunes you should see, below the icon of your library, the icon of your ipod; if you click on it it will show all the music stored on your nano the same way the library shows the music stored on your computer.
If you want to copy music from you computer(library) to your ipod, just drag songs (or even entire album or artist) from the the library directly to the ipod icon.
Hope this is what your were looking for,

  • I downloaded 2 cds onto my ipod nano through itunes.  Recently my itunes account changed and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds.  How to transfer from ipod back to itunes?  I don't have the cds anymore.

I downloaded 2 cds onto my ipod nano through itunes.  Recently my itunes account changed for some unknown reason and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds.  The songs are still on my ipod.  I am affraid to sync now because the songs may be deleated, and I don't have the cds anymore.  How can I transfer the songs from the cds on my ipod back to itunes so that I don't lose them?

What you have on your computer is your iTunes library, not your "account."  The "account" you have for iTunes is your Apple ID, which you use when purchasing or downloading from the iTunes Store.  If these songs came from music CDs that you imported into iTunes, those songs are not related to your Apple ID.
Recently my itunes account changed for some unknown reason and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds
How are they not "recognized"?  Are the songs still listed in your iTunes music library, but grayed out?  They no longer appear in your iTunes library at all?
If you search your computer (not in iTunes) for the song files, using one of the song names, can you find the song files?

  • I uploaded/imported two CD's (51 songs) into my library as playlists. Now, I cannot download these 51 songs into/onto my Ipod because I can not find a sync, or link, that allows me to  do this. Any answers

I uplodaded/imported two CD discs (51 songs) into my library as playlists. Now, I cannot find a sync, or link, that allows me to download those 51 songs into/onto my Ipod Nano which is synced and connected. Any answers?

You can choose what to sync in iTunes when you connect your iPod, choose it, and then go to the tab "Music", there, choose those playlists to be synchronized.
If you sync your iPod now, the playlists should be synchronized.

  • Uploading to online data storage: Now cannot download songs into iTunes

    Hello all.
I am not seeing this one on any FAQs, knowledge bases, or discussion boards yet:
I am doing my initial upload of files to SugarSync, a highly-recommended online data storage service. Since I started, I cannot download songs into iTunes, even from the iTunes Store.
On any new downloads from the iTunes Store, the song DOES appear in the Music library view but immediately after completing the download it shows the exclamation point warning that the file is not in its location. The new folders get created properly within the iTunes Music folder but the subfolder where the song should be is empty. Each time I had to write iTunes Support to get them to make the files available.
I can still add files manually, no problem. E.g., I can add *.mp3 or *.wav files or folders, I can convert them to AAC, etc. The glitch seems to occur only when automated loads into iTunes are operating.
As a test, I downloaded a song from Amazon. Here the problem was different but I could work around it manually. Normally the Amazon process loads songs automatically into iTunes, too. Here again, the download did create the proper folder in the iTunes Music folder, as it should, but this time the symptoms were reversed:
    (a) the mp3 file WAS in its folder as it should be (w/the iTunes DL, the file was NOT there)
    (b) the song did NOT appear in the iTunes Music view (w/the iTunes DL, the song DID appear)
    (c) I was able to browse to the file and tell it manually to load into iTunes (w/iTunes I had to write Support and wait a day).
(I wonder what's the cause of the differences between the two cases.)
Strictly speaking, I can't PROVE the problem has anything to do with SugarSync (which otherwise seems good so far), but the DL problem started as soon as I started using it. Something in the SugarSync upload or file-monitoring process, or an odd thin gin iTunes, seems to be preventing automated, direct loads into iTunes. And since the data service runs in background, so it can monitor file changes, that might mean I can't buy music anymore! Obviously that would be a dealbreaker with SS. (I have contacted SS on this but they've not had fair chance to reply yet.)
    1) Anyone else have this problem?
    2) Is this permanent or just temporary while I am doing the initial upload?
    3) Anyone know a solution?
(FYI, I am a highly-experienced user and otherwise quite handy with iTunes files, library moves, and backups. My library is entirely consolidated and all AAC.)
    Thanks.
(Oh, and this occurred in both iTunes 8 and the new iTunes 9, so it seems unrelated to the upgrade this week.)

UPDATE 1. CHANGING BROWSER HELPED -- OR DID IT?
I called Apple iTunes Support, who said the problem is new to them. The technician's hypothesis was that something, perhaps browser-related, was interfering with the initial creation of a temporary file (which should go to the Recycle Bin) that instead causes the completed file to go to there.
He noted that iTunes, though not going through one's browser onscreen, does use settings within one's default browser. I use Mozilla Firefox, so we switched to IE as the default browser, restarted iTunes, and the song downloaded with no problem! Then I switched back to Mozilla, restarted iTunes, and it worked AGAIN with no problem!
(Dutifully I advised SugarSync, which is still investigating.)
    UPDATE 2: ARTIST NAME CHANGE - SOME FILES GOT MIS-MOVED / MIS-CHANGED
Definitely something still wrong. This time some pre-existing song entries (not new downloads) lost their connection to their source file.
In iTunes, which manages folder names for artists and albums automatically, I corrected the spelling for an Artist, so immediately iTunes renamed the folder, and automatically SugarSync noted the change to be uploaded. While the changed folder name and all the songs within were still uploading to SS, in iTunes I saw exclamation points come up -- but only for some of them. Most files got moved or changed correctly, but several lost connection to their file (i.e., the file was removed for the original misnamed folder but never moved into the correctly-named folder). Weird.
Worse, in only some of those cases did I find the missing *.m4a file in the Recycle bin. (I had to retrieve old, original *.mp3 versions from another folder and re-import each into iTunes manually.) I've never seen iTunes have a problem managing an Artist rename until I started using the live SS process.
(I've reported this to SS and asked if there is a way to disable temporarily SS to see if that's the problem.)
[Note: I am willing to try downloads again but I am wary of trying to rename entire Artists (Folder) again. That was a lot of work.]

UPDATE 3: SERIES OF TESTS - 1 FAILURE USING iTUNES
Still problem occurs, but not always. Today, I rebooted PC. I tried CD, iTunes, & Amazon. I varied having the browser open when using iTunes.
Here are the results of a series of attempts to download songs. "FAIL" means the file did not load properly into iTunes or loaded but lost its connection (exclamation point warning).
    # Source Mozilla #Songs Result
    1 CD Closed 1 OK
    2 iTunes Closed 1 OK
    3 Amazon Open 2 OK
    4 iTunes Open 1 FAIL
    5 Amazon Open 1 OK
    6 iTunes Closed 1 OK
    7 Amazon Open 2 OK
    8 iTunes Open 2 OK
(I reported this to SS. Hoping they'll test and find the problem.)

When downloading a CD album, if it contains different artists, the album is split up into separate albums/icons. How do I get all songs into one album (just like the original CD)?

Generally, in iTunes, all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist to keep things together. For older iPods each track from the same album should have the same artist, or be marked as a compilation where appropriate. For iOS devices you may need to go to Settings > Music > Group By Album Artist > On.
For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

  • HT3281 I HAVE DOWNLOADED SONGS INTO ITUNES. WHEN I GO TO FILE THE SYNC IPOD IS NOT HIGHLIGHTED. I HAVE SYNC SONGS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE

I have downloaded songs into ITUNES and when I go to FILE the SYNC IPOD sign is not highlighted.
I believe I have previously used this method to sync to my Ipod!

Will the media file play with Quicktime Player? If it will then it's an iTunes issue. If it won't then you need to delete the file and download it a second time.

Hi. Im using iTunes Match, but my iPhone storage is full of music. I haven't downloaded any songs into the device. Please help.

Go to Settings > General > Usage and tap Music (you may need to scroll down in the list). Swipe across "all music" and tap DELETE.
When streaming music from the cloud the Music app caches a temporary copy for later playback.

  • HT1725 I downloaded an album and all of the tracks will play about 3/4 of the song then stop and play the next song.  I went to itunes store and it said the songs fully downloaded. So how do I get the full song into my library?

I downloaded an album and all of the tracks will play about 3/4 of the song then stop and play the next song.  I went to itunes store and it said the songs fully downloaded. So how do I get the full song into my library?

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

Is it possible that you are not seeing the thirteenth song because you did not scroll all the way down within the playlist?

  • Syncing albums into nano-must I make a playlist?

I have just finished downloading ALL of my CDs into my Mac (about 100 of them). Obviously with an auto sync, the entire library went into my nano. It fits but...
Can I sync just one CD at a time? Or must I make a playlist out of each CD then sync the playlists manually?
I see how to sync all songs. I see how to sync individual songs. I see how to sync playlists...but I can't see how to sync one CD from the library without making a playlist?
Also, if I sync all music (1286 songs) and most recently added (again 1286 songs) does that mean over 2500 songs just went in my nano? It seems so.
If so, do I just delete that playlist from my nano?
I am struggling a little with some basic organizing skills!

If you sync all songs and also a playlist, you will only get the songs once each. The playlist just "references" the tracks on your iPod. So, no, you didn't sync twice as many songs as you have! You synced all your songs, plus a playlist that is just an ordering of the tracks on the iPod. You could sync 500 playlists and you'd still only end up with 1 copy of each song on your iPod. Hopefully that made sense!
Regarding adding just one CD. It depends on what you are asking. If you import another CD into iTunes, then the next time you sync, iTunes will copy that album to your iPod since you are syncing all songs. Until you fill up your iPod, you don't have to worry about it - it's all automatic.
Now, if and when you run out of space and need to pick and choose, then you have several options, but most people are probably best off creating a playlist that contains the songs/cds you want to have copied to your iPod, and then sync only that playlist. Note that when you are looking at the playlist, at the bottom of the iTunes window it will show you how much space the tracks take up. So you can estimate how much will fit. Give yourself some breathing room. If it doesn't all fit, iTunes will tell you that (and will also tell you how much over you were) when you try to sync and offer to sync a selection (random) of the tracks in the list, or to cancel the sync. You can either let it do that, or cancel and then pair down the playlist and then sync again, repeat until you get it small enough.
Another approach is to create a smart playlist which, for example, has 7 GB (or some number of GB) of music that was most recently added. I use a combination. I have a playlist like that, and then I also have a normal playlist in which I have albums I always want on my iPod. I sync both of those to my iPod. This way I always have the latest stuff I've added to my library, but I also have my favorites even if they were added a long time ago.
Another approach is to manually manage the music on your iPod. In that case you drag and drop tracks to and from your iPod. That's good, but it does have some downsides to it too. I'm not going to go into that here. I don't like manual management, but other people do. Once you get to the point that you've filled your iPod, then you can look into that.

  • Separating songs into folders and playing all random

I downloaded songs to my Zen Nano Plus player. Now I want to separate the songs into 3 folders; Jazz, Oldies, New. How do I do that? Will I still be able to play a combination of all the songs from the 3 folders in random order.

After all day of playing with the thing, I figured out how to do it. If anyone else is as Mp3 challanged as I am, don't hesitate to ask me how I did it.
