Downloading Additional Components

Folks trying to install Mountain Lion and encountering a screen saying "Downloading Additional Components..." , be aware that this is often a RAM problem. What has happened is that the installer cannot locate the AppStore version and has fallen back to hard-coded and is looking to Apple servers to provide install data. I don't fully understand why faulty RAM causes this, but it's almost always the villian. The solution is simple, albeit a pain in the neck. Temporarily replace the factory RAM into your computer, finish the install, then upgrade the RAM again keeping in mind that you'd probably be better off buying new RAM, particularly if you have been experiencing kernel panics or components crashing (such as Silverlight while watching Netflix). Hope this helps !!!

Maybe you created a bootable disk of Recovery instead of Mountain Lion, so it will download OS X instead of installing it from the USB disk. To create a bootable OS X disk, open App Store > Purchases, download Mountain Lion and install Lion Diskmaker > http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/

  • Why do I get "Can't download additional components needed to install OSX" - Which prevents installation from completing?, Why do I get "Can't download additional components needed to install OSX" - Which prevents installation from completing?

After an hour or two of the installation process, with reamining time registering only 7 minutes, a box appears on screen with the message:
"Can't download additional components needed to installl OS X". I can't get beyond that poiint.  I had not trouble installing Lion yesterday, but three attempts to install Mountain Lion hand up at this same point.  What can I do about it?  (I'm installing to a Mac Mini that I bought in 2012. I have 110 GB free out of 249.67GB.  I have VMWare Fusion installed and that allocates 69.55 to Windows.)

    Try resetting the App Store.

  • Mountain Lion - Cannot download additional components???

My MacPRO (2008) was running like clock work, but recently a gremlin has appeared. I have been on this forum before and so far all information has been really useful. The mac would start up and shutdown in one motion. I didn't even have enough time to bypass or boot from an alternate drive so it was off to the mac centre to find the cause. Weirdly enough they found nothing wrong and it was good to go. I decided this might be an opportunity to rebuild from scratch and so my 4 drives I zeroed the data and tried to reload Mac OSX 10.8. It starts all well and good before stopping after a few minutes and flagging a problem "cannot download additional components". What is causing this and how do i get around the problem. I would take it back to service centre but have lost confidence in there competency since everytime I take it there it comes out worse than it went in.

Did you get to the point where you have downloaded the entire package from AppStore?
Save the ESD package and prepare an install disk and do a clean install.
Usually - there was one person recently here but cannot find buried in a thread, they had 10.8.2 and the installer is 10.8.3.
    What are you running now?
As for the original problem, for which no problem was found... are you using an SSD to boot the system?
How to do clean install of Mountain is same as was for Lion, with how to clone a system.
Make sure you have 8GB flash drive, or even a small (16-32GB) partition (yes, you can setup an installer to run from hard disk drives to do a clean install to another drive or partition).

  • Downloading additional components for fresh reinstall of lion but does not restart when done

i've attempted to reinstall a fresh copy of lion because ever since i had lion, my dmg files wont open, software would not update and many other problems. So i tried reinstall and i waited hours for them to download additional components. the bar is completely blue (completed) but it would not restart. do i restart it manually?

    Manually shut it down.
I would then first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.
    Hope this helps

Hello! Tried unsuccessfully to restore my MBP, running the Mac OSX Lion, to factory settings. I keep getting the "can't download additional components for the Mac OSX Lion" error when reinstalling the OSX Lion. Any tips on how to resolve this problem?

    Hi
Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

  • When reinstalling os x, why do I get a message saying it cannot download additional components?

My MacBook Pro recently began acting weird. The Application window kept closing on its own. I couldn't launch several applications. I could no longer access my e-mail from my mac and everything is taking much longer than normal to load. I ran MacKeeper, but it found nothing unusual. I then went to the Disk Utility and tried the repair option. It also found nothing unusual. After that, I erased a partition and attempted to reinstall Mac OS X. Each time I tried, it began downloading but eventually said that it was unable to download additional components needed to reinstall OS X. Any idea why?
Any support and/or suggestions as to how I can fix this would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks...

    EDIT:
After posting I see this question has the tag of "windows". I don't know if this applies to the Windows version or not.
The only time I see this message is if I download something, trash it, AND empty the trash. If I don't empty the trash, it finds it there. It will find it wherever I move it to, unless it is was in the trash and emptied.
Using Finder, is the downloaded file in your Downloads folder?
Maybe if you go to Safari/Preferences/General and change the location for downloads to something else then change it back to Downloads it might correct it.

  • Why does "downloading additional components" take 36 hours?

    Hi there,
I'm about to go on the road for 6 weeks so am trying to install Mavericks onto a USB stick so I can have a bootable drive with a bunch of trouble shooting tools installed.
But when I try to install Mavericks (restart then Command R) the stage "Downloading additional components" says it will take 36 hours. I tried restarting the process and doing a clean erase of the drive using the installer's Disk Utility and this has dropped it to 8 hours but over the past 20mins it's climbed to 14 hours?
Frankly, I don't understand why I can't just use the 5gb Mavericks installer I've already downloaded - but I can't because the installer states Mavericks can't be installed on this Machine (I think because it's already installed).
Does anyone know how to install the OS onto a disk quickly? I really don't understand all these new restrictions.
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

i formatted the Hard Drive from Disk Utility in order to Re-install OSX Lion...The download time first shown was like 53 hours and then after like 10 minutes it went down to 10 hours...i am pretty sure thst the internet connection i have is very fast, so why does downloading OSX Lion take so long?
It's about 4GB, from memory, and the download speed can be affected from things like site traffic or variations in speed from your own ISP. But in general, it IS a very large download. Also never put your trust in a computer telling you how much time is left to download. As you can see, it recalculates everything more often and more quickly than the Tax Department! (Oh, and don't watch it. You know the old saying)

  • Trying to restore lion - message 'unable to install additional components' what can I do?

I upgraded my MacBook pro internally from 10.6.8. A big mistake. Didn't make a timemachine backup - another big one. Tried to return to 10.6.8. Long and short - stuck with lion reinstall facility which continues to tell me it can't download additional components (whatever they are) What can I do ????

If you're getting the can't get Lion's additional components, then Apple's servers are borked or you have a flakey Internet connection and you'll have to keep trying. To revert back to SL, see Kappy's going back to SL from Lion guide

  • Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X

Hi there, I'm new and a complete novice, please try to have patience I'm hoping to learn but need the right guidance and assistance if possible please :)
Firstly I have read the other articles sharing the same or similar title but most are mentioning using time machine.
I have just fitted a new 1tb SSD to my 13" MacBook Pro after my previous hd was in an unrepairable state. I also purchased a Mac OS X Lion thumb drive with intention of having the latest software on my mac. I obviously don't have any information I want to recover I just merely want to install OS X Lion and begin as if my Macbook was new. But I keep getting the above message. I have gone to disc utilities went through the whole erase process which creates the new partition. Every time I do verify disc is says disc needs repairing so successfully repair it and go back to attempting to install Lion but again it gives me the 'can't download the additional components...' Message. I tried starting up in recovery mode, but from what I have seen on tutorials I should be given the choice of 2 or 3 drives in which to start up on, I only get the option of the OS X Lion thumb drive. Please help me, I really would like to do this myself as a sense of achievement.
My warranty has obviously run out on my mac so this is the reason I changed the HD myself.
Thanks in advanced and feel free to ask questions if you require more details on specifics :)

Hi a Brody, thank you for taking the time to lend some advice. I am able to connect to the internet via wifi, although my internet is not the fastest, would it be better to connect the MacBook up to the router?
I'm not sure if I have tried reformatting my SSD, would it be possible to have some instructions for that please?
With regards to the  original install disc it was lost a long time ago, so was told this thumb drive USB stick with OS X Lion mounted (official apple OS X Lion thumb stick) to it would act as an install disc, would I require the initial install disc as it is a fairly old MacBook?
    Thanks for your help

  • Can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x lion

I recently upgraded the RAM in my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) to 16gigs.  The process went smooth at first.  Then the Computer would not boot and stayed on the white Apple screen with the circle spinning. A progress bar would appear and disapear but it would never get past that screen.  I tried to fix that but ended up backing up my hard drive and now I am attempting to restore the unit using "command + R" at startup.  I have eraseed and reformated the drive using with Disk Utilities OSX extend journaled. Then I attempt to reinstall and the unit is connected to my wifi which is fast and stable and I get, "can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x lion."    I have tried this many times

I still have the 16gigs of ram in the macbook pro which I am told this unit supports both by OWC (which is where i bought it) both identical 2x8gig sticks ddr3 1333

  • Can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x, what shall i do?

can't download the additional components needed to install mac os x, check your internet connection and try again-  that's the error always showing when im reinstalling the os on my macbook air. what shall i do? please i need help.

Not sure 10.7.3 is still available over the internet download system. I think Apple waws more on the ball this time and switched the Recovery HD system download over to 10.7.4 fairly Quickly.
That may or may not be part of your problem.
It may also be your internet connection is flakey and is dropping the connection with the download server.
If you are doing this over a WiFi connection try connecting the Mac to your router with an Ethernet cable.
