Downloading applications (ex. Windows Media Player)

I've tried to download applications that are said to be made for Mac OS X, but a lot of them I have trouble installing. for example, I have tried to installed Windows Media Player for OS X but after it downloads the file, when I click on it to download it says there is no specific application specified to download the file. This comes up a lot and I don't know what to choose. Any suggestions?

Never mind -- I just found it under Tools/Options.../Applications, where I changed the incorrect association of "nlmcp" from Windows Media Player to the correct one, NetLibrary Media Center. Done!

Within iTunes use the add folder to library option available on file menu. Select the folder to add. iTunes will add the file to iTunes library. Depending on settings, iTunes may copy the file to iTUnes folder location.

I can’t get audible book downloads from Net Library to play on my computer. Microsoft Windows Media player v9 and above is required to listen to eAudiobooks. I have this version. When I try to launch a download I get the message: cannot open file; verify file and path are correct. What do I need to do?

Hi, kathy. Welcome to the Discussions.
The Net Library audio books you are downloading are undoubtedly using a version of WMA-DRM (Windows Media Audio - Digital Rights Management) later than version 1.3. According to this post on another forum and related info on Microsoft's Web site here, version 1.3 is the latest version of WMA-DRM supported by WMP9 for Mac OS X.
In other words, the audio books use a later version of DRM (specifically the Microsoft Windows Media Rights Manager ) than that supported by WMP9. They simply will not play in WMP9.
Flip4Mac will not help you here:
• It clearly states on this page that "Note: Flip4Mac does not support content that is protected with Windows Media digital rights management (DRM). "• Flip4Mac would not let you convert the WMA-DRM-protected files to QuickTime files as this would require cracking the DRM protection, a violation of the U.S. DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).
Accordingly, you're out of luck with the Net Library audio books that do not play in WMP9 unless you have a PC running Windows and WMP10.
That Net Library went with files protected by WMA-DRM is a sore point for many Mac users. Search for Net Library in this page for some examples of similarly frustrated users.

That sounds like your file association for .pdf files is hosed; you need to assign it to Adobe Reader instead of Media Player: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-default-programs#1TC=windows-7

You don't as far as I know. Windows Media Player is the proprietary player for windows devices, iTunes is the proprietary player for stuff purchased from iTunes.
The only way you can get files to freely transfer between the two programs is if they are not purchased from either service, but are ripped from a CD you own. Downloaded files have DRM (digital rights management) embedded in them that often restricts what you can/can't do.

You cannot play a movie from the iTunes Store in anything but iTunes or QuickTime Player or on an Apple device. You'll need to connect your computer to your TV to watch that movie there.

There are some websites I visit on a regular basis, but for better viewing they require Windows Media Player
(this is the warning: "....has content of MIME type application/x-mplayer2, but you dont have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page:....")
To Download or not to Download, that's my dilemma.

If you are simply wondering about whether you should download and install Windows Media Player, then go ahead. It's very useful to have. Just be sure that you are downloading from a trusted source. If you have already downloaded and installed WMP but the Windows Media Plugin wasn't installed, then you should probably reinstall WMP. If you have downloaded and installed WMP and you have the Windows Media Plugin installed but you are unable to watch certain content, it may be because the Mac version of WMP doesn't support certain file-types.
I would just add that while application/x-mplayer2 is a component of Windows Media Player, the Windows Media Plugin in my Installed Plug-ins list (Safari > Help > Installed Plug-ins) doesn't assign any extensions to that MIME type. This leads me to believe that the Mac version of WMP may not support the file types associated with the MIME type, application/x-mplayer2.

Is it safe to download and opperate Windows media player for Mac's to view video on the web ?
Anybody has experience with it ? What are possible problems that may be encountered ? Thanks for any input or feedback.

You should know that's it's discontinued, and no longer developed by Microsoft, and therefore will never be native to Intel Macs. You should look to the free Flip4Mac QuickTime plugin from flip4mac.com

Converting video on imovie hd to play on a PC with windows media player

Hi, i have recently transfered video from a mini dv camcorder to imovie hd on my imac/ macbook which i have done successfully, i now have to convert it to a DVD or CD Rom which has to be played on my bosses PC which has windows media player installed on it, at present it is saying file not supported, how do i go about doing this? in the easiest possible way......Thanks

In iMovie, Share > Media Browser.
Open iDVD, clcik Movies in the Media pane and select the iMovie you made then burn that.
This will be a standard DVD which can be used on any DVD player or DVD application.
Windows Media Player doesn't play DVDs as standard as it needs to have a decoder installed.

If he has a DVD drive on his computer, it should have come with a DVD player application.
