Downloading apps for ipod iOS 4.2.1 via windows 8 pc

I have an ipod touch h ios 4.2.1. I got some apps from itunes with my computer, but when I tried to sync them with my ipod, I got an error that i needed a newer version of iOS. is there any way to make itunes only show apps that will work on my ipod?

i have downloaded some apps for the ipod touch using itunes on my PC but i cant get them on my ipod touch do anyone know how to do this?

ive just updated my ipod touch with software 2.0 version.
managed to downloaded few free applications/games as a trial, before purchasing other paid apps/games.
BUT every time i touch the apps/games icons on my ipod touch, POOF, the apps/games seems to be unplayable, and goes back to the main menu.
can someone explain to me why did this happened? is there anything i missed out while updating to the 2.0 version and/or while downloading the apps/games?

it's up to the app creators whether they are going to continue to create updates that are backwards compatible - if they choose to make newer updates so they will only work with current software then you are pretty much stuck.
btw. a few questions on here are different. if your questions aren't EXACTLY the same as an original post, it's better that you start a new thread, it's much easier for us to reply and easier for people to find their responses.

It looks like you have a 1G iPod Touch running iOS 3.1.3, which is the latest version of iOS that is compatible with that model. If if it's actually a 2G iPod Touch, you should be able to update it to iOS 4.2.1 at most.
Either way though, if the App requires a high version of iOS than what is possible on your iPod Touch, then I'm afraid you are out of luck.

Download the apps on your syncing computer and then sync to the iPod. Note that you can only sync apps for the one syncing computer you use with the iPod. You can manage music and videos among different computer.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
