Downloading Digital Camcorder (Canon HV20) Clips onto an Older iMAC

I have a G4 iMac running OX 10.3.9 and iMovie version 3.0.3. I purchased a Canon HV20 camcorder that uses DV mini tapes. I have connected the camcorder to the iMac using a firewire cable and all the appropriate camera settings (reasonably confident on that issue). However, I cannot import any clips into iMovie because the software does not "see" the camcorder. The message shown is "no camera attached" or words to that affect.
Would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Could it be that the camcorder is not compatible with the old version of iMovie or the older Mac? Or is there something I should be doing so iMovie will import the clips?
Thanks.

I just posted "Edit in 4:3 or 16:9 for classroom TVs?" with a bit of the same issue. My iMac also won't recognize my HV20 when I connect via Firewire. I had all the same experiences as you. And a connection using Canopus ADVC-110 between the HV 20 amd iMac via firewire won't work either. It's just the nature of the beast I'm afraid.
What I'm having to do is connect my HV20 to a several year old Pioneer DVR-320 DVD recorder by way of the "composite" out on the HV 20 to the ins of the 320 to burn a DVD of my tape. I get a not-so-great signal of course because I have to use the composite connection (the HV 20 not having an S-VHS out AND the Pioneer 320 does not recognize the firewire connection from the HV 20 either just like iMovie 4 , and yet the Pioneer 320 has a firewire in !!).
Very luckily the Pioneer 320 has a FW out as well (extremely rare to find on a DVD recorder) and my iMovie 4 DOES recognize the FW connection, so I'm able to play back my Pioneer-burned DVD onto my iMac in standard definition. And I can burn the DVD on the Pioneer 320 using 4:3 format OR 16:9 out of the HV 20, which is the nature of the question I posted earler today. For the moment I'm choosing 4:3, and this is how I'm choosing that format just in case you want to know because it was a little tricky figuring it out.
In the HV-20 in Play mode: PLAYBACK OUT/SET UP 1: AUTO (when I chose DV, it became DV LOCKED and it would not not play back), and then TV TYPE: 4:3
PLAYBACK SET UP 2: choose "DV Locked", which then shows up as "DV" on your LCD screen. But this DV Locked is apparently different (?) from the DV locked in SET UP 1, so it's O.K. See what I mean about it being tricky? Or you could chose HDV/DV which seems to work O.K. too.
Of course I'm lucky to have the Pioneer 320 even though I'm consigned to using composite connections, but I just have to do one last project and I can compromise on the quality a bit. But if I get too much more frustratd, I'm going to get a new iMac with iMovie '09, and just be over with all this standard definiton nonsense because a new Apple will certainly capture the HV 20 in HD format.
Please let me know if you come with something better.

I downloaded digital hd copies of movies onto my parents' computer and they have a new computer now, and the movies aren't there, even though they have the same apple ID. What do I do to get them to download?
    New computer: Dell, Windows 8.1
    Processor: Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
    64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
    16 GB RAM
    itunes up-to-date
Old computer: Dell, Microsoft Windows XP
    Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU @ 2.80GHz
    1 GB RAM
itunes not up-to-date (updating it isn't really an option)
I have these movies downloaded on the old computer from digital hd redeemed codes: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Super 98, Thor, Inception, The Hunger Games, and Star Trek Into Darkness. I bought Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl on itunes with money, and that one isn't showing up either. When I search it on itunes to see if I can just re-download it, that isn't an option. I would have to buy it again. Home Sharing isn't what I want because the old computer will not be here forever and it is not connected to wifi.
It's kind of a lot of movies, and I want them on the new computer.

im so happy I have a iTunes Card Code absolutely free! I got it at http://linkbitty.com/freeitunes2014

  • I downloaded my apps from my iPad onto my new iMac, but i cannot find them, can you please tell me where I can access them. I have tried finder, and launchpad but to not avail

I downloaded all my apps onto my new imac from my ipad, but i cannot access them , i dont know where they are. If I try to download them again, it says already downloaded. Can you help please.

    Hi Tykie,
If you have transferred or Downloaded iPad Apps on your Mac you will find them in iTunes on your Mac....
Open iTunes and in iTunes on left hand corner where Music is return you should see a drop down button next to it and once you click on that drop down button you will see Movies/Tv Shows/Applications, you need to select Applications here and you will find all your downloaded iPad Applications. And as they are made only for iOs devices that cannot be run on your Mac.
    Hope this will help you

  • Has anyone successfully downloaded their Norton 360 online backup onto a new iMac?

My PC had a BSOD without warning and  restoring efforts have failed.  I've used the opportunity to move to a new iMac.  Unfortunately, my backup is with Norton 360 online.  Has anyone successfully migrated a norton backup file onto their iMac?

You will probably find most on here recommend you stay as far away from Norton software as possible with a Mac.  The Norton Anti-virus software is the worst of the worst and does damage to the Mac OS X.  Just be aware that you are likely to get recommendations to use the backup that comes with the Mac, Time Machine.  Or make a clone of your drive with programs like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

  • HOW DO I LOAD MAC OS LION ONTO AN OLDER iMAC (2010) WITHOUT THE ADMIN PASSWORD.

I purchased MAC OS LION (version 1.0.4) (multi user) from APPLE about 4 months ago.  The OS  LION came on a thumb drive that is used to load it on multiple computers instead of having to down loading it off the APPLE website. I have only loaded one version of LION onto one computer so far.
I want to load the LION  on a used iMAC(about 2-years old) I recently purchased but can't because I don't have the previous owners ADMIN password.
I don't have the original disc that came with the iMAC either. The OS currently on the iMAC is Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I do not care about any data that the previous owner had on the hard drive which isn't much so I would be glad to install MAC OS LION from scratch and erase/reformat the hard drive. Doing this I presume I can then create my own Admin password .
I believe there is a procedure where you hold down certain keys at startup which will allow you to clear the HD and install the new OS but I am unaware of the key sequence. Nor am I sure if this will work with the THUMBRIVEn or if you need an actual disc.
If anyone can give me direction on how I can load the OS LION from the thumb drive when I start the computer up so I can reformat/erase the HD I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for any help you can give me

If the password you are talking about is the EFI boot password the only way to bypass and or remove it is to take the system to Apple.
If it is a User Log On password then just boot the computer from that thumb drive open Disk Utility and Re-Partition the internal drive as ONE partition. then exit out of DU and select Reinstall Mac OS X.
Once that is done it will boot to a fresh clean install of Lion ready to be setup with new user account and password.

  • Canon HV20 HDV Camcorder and FCE / Firewire

    Hey Folks:
I just got off the phone with B&H Photo, one of the larger camera companies. After a long call, the guys feel the HV20 will be a pretty good choice as a DV camera. I can't seem to confirm whether is firewire, I know it's USB however. Anyone know?
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour!
See this link for a HV20 review:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-hv20-mini-dv/4505-6500_7-321726 25.html
IE-1394 is the generic name for firewire (a term specific to Apple world). HV 20 use this protocol.
Here's features that you have to check to get the best image quality:
3 CCD or 3 CMOS, unlockable manual adjustment for: white balance, shutter speed, iris, gain, focus, zoom ring. Long lasting battery. Tape based system, input for audio jack 1/8 or better: XLR. Large lens opening for low light condition.
The form factory is also a consideration. A bulkier camcorder tends to be more steady in the hand.

Thanks Russ.  I'm a beginner but Lynda.com has a video on making an archive, so I'll follow her video to try this method.

  • I use an iMac 10.6.8 with iPhoto '09 to download digital images from Canon DSLRs. Until the last two weeks there has been no trouble whatever importing images by  a USB connection from either camera to the Mac. Now the process will not kick in. Any ideas?

I use an Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 09 to download digital images from two Canon DSLRs. Until the last week, there has been no problem whatever in launching the import procedure once the USB connection has been connected and the camera switched on. Now the process will not kick in at all for either camera.  I can't find a solution through iPhoto help or from other sources.
Any ideas to fix?  (I admit I have not tested the USB cable at this time).

    What does "kick in" mean?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • FireWire is the only way to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?

As a followup to my last post a moment ago tonight 1/30/08:
Is it true that I need a FireWire cable to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?
If so, the Apple salesperson is wrong.
He told me last Monday that purchasing the new iLife 2008 (that contains iMovie 2008) would allow me to use my current USB cable.
Given I see NO FireWire port on my new MacBook Pro (bought in 8/2006), I don't see a solution.
Note the camera, an HD camcorder (the Canon HV20) did NOT come with a FireWire cable; it only came with a USB male plug on one side of the cable and the other is a small square-like male plug that connects to a female port on the Canon HV20.
    Solution?
    Thanks for any suggestions, Daniel

The USB cable is for importing still photographs. Not video.
The firewire 400 cable you need is one that goes from the 6 pin full size male connector to the small 4 pin form used for DV.
The cable plugs into the camera in a socket behind a plastic flap near the eyepiece. Its marked HDV/DV. The other end plugs into the MBP on the right-hand side. 4th from the back.

  • I have problems with my films that become slightly jerky after I have imported and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD. I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally and vertically. I shoot with a camcorder Canon

I have problems with my films that become slightly jerky after I have imported
and edited them in iMovie and then burned them onto a DVD using iDVD.
I can see the weak jerkiness when panning in both laterally
    and vertically.
I shoot with a camcorder Canon Vixia HF10. The camera has been set to deliver HD quality (1920x1080). But I have accidentally filmed with a frame rate of 60 (?).
When I import the films in iMovie I have been asked if I want to change to frame rate 30 (instead of 25). I have chosen 30.
Could it be the setting of a frame rate 60 in my camcorder that causes jerkiness when panning or what else?

  • Canon ZR950 MiniDV Digital Camcorder

Does anyone use a Canon ZR950 MiniDV Digital Camcorder? I'm thinking of purchasing 3 for upcoming projects, as these are an ok price, but I'd rather spend a little more if these are junk. I'd be shooting sports action. Any advice on this camera or another that is good with fast motion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you vey much R. Mitchell Fore. Those two suggestions for Sony fall right into my proce range where I can afford to buy 3. It seems that the jump from prices goes from $300 up to $1800+. Is there really a need for a $1800 camera at the begining of a business? With so many people owning HDTVs, is a smaller, cheaper camera going to cut it? I mean, just how much sharper is a wedding shot on a commercial/production grade camera used by the pros? Someone on this website to me to make a little money, be prepared to spend alot of money, and I concur, but I need to make some money to invest. But I don't want to short myself on equipment if the difference is really that great.

  • Downloading digital video from camcorder using USB

I know this is not really a new topic, but I am new to all this and can't figure out how to post to an existing topic which addresses it. I found a posting which says I can download digital video by opening "Image Capture" and under preferences telling what I want done when a USB camcorder is connected. I find that preferences does not specifically ask about USB, but does ask, when a camcorder is connected, if I want to open Image Capture, IPhoto, or no application. I selected Image Capture, connected the camcorder through a USB port, set the camcorder to play/edit, and got nothing, no acknowledgement that the computer recognizes the presence of the camcorder. Now what?

Well, I tried Firewire, which I thought myself would solve the problem. Bought a new Firewire cable because I have never had one. Plugged the 4-pin into my camcorder, and the 6-pin into a Firewire port on my eMac. Turned the camcorder on to Play/edit, which is the playback setting. No indication on the computer that the camcorder is connected. Tried Image Capture, iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie. None of them gave me anything. I suppose there is a slim possibility that the cable is defective, but I don't have any other Firewire peripherals, so I don't know how to check it. Any suggestions on that or any other way to troubleshoot? I also tried playback of a video in the camcorder. It plays fine internally, but still no response from the computer.

  • Canon HV20 imports footage as a single clip

I have a Canon HV20 and am trying to import my footage as separate clips based on when I pressed the record / pause button. Currently, when I import the footage automatically the footage is imported as a single clip and therefore one large .MOV file. From what I've read and heard, it's supposed to create a new clip for every start / stop on the tape. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I've only tried it on Auto. I'll have to give it a show in Manual. Is this to say you have to manually start and stop the import to create different clips? or is putting it in Manual mode a way to get it to recognize the timecode breaks?
Also, I'm capturing the full frame of 1920 x 1080 (if that helps).
    Thanks.

  • Analogue/Digital Conversion w/ Canon HV20 & IMovie 08

I can't figure out how to transfer VHSc tapes from my old JVC Camcorder through my new Canon HV20 into iMovie '08 on my new Imac 24" 2.4.
I have the JVC connected to the Canon with AV cable. And I have the Canon connected to the IMac with a DV cable from the Canon's HDV/DD port to the Imac's firewire port. And I have the Canon's AV=>Dv function turned on.
I put both camcorders on the "play" mode. The audio and video signals get passed from the JVC to the Canon. But when I select Import in iMovie, I get the message "NO TAPE" in the upper left hand corner of the blue screen and neither video nor audio gets passed through. Help!!!!

This is a shot in the dark, but I think you may have to have a tape in the Canon (or whatever brand pass-through you use).
I was doing the same thing as you about 4 years ago (on a PC at the time) and I vaguely remember the "No Tape" message on my Sony. Technology has changed a lot in that time, so I may be WAY off base.
