I'm guessing you had the USB cable hooked up to a computer at the time?  If the phone is turned off, and it is connected to a live USB connection, holding the 'vol down' will put it into 'download' mode.  This is where emergency firmware fixes can be done.
If that's what happened, just unplug the phone and take the battery out.  Put the battery back in and you are good to go.

  • S3 randomly shows android guy and downloading do not turn off target.  Frozen now for 6 hours

Out of nowhere my phone switched to Factory mode in red in the upper left corner with the product name, current binary, system status, and other programming things.  The little green android guy shows up and it reads downloading do not turn off target.  It has been frozen this way now for 6 hours.  I am due an upgrade in like 5 weeks.  I need my phone however today.  I don't know what this is or what it means and I don't want to do anything that would cause it to lose anything currently on the phone.  Any ideas what the heck this is?

Are you connected to a PC?  Otherwise, this should not happen.

  • Help! My s3 is stuck on a "DOWNLOADING... Do Not Turn Off Target!!" page!

I've had the worst time charging my phone since the new kitkat update. Today while my phone was plugged in to "charge" instead of the battery level increasing...it went down!
I switched chargers and that didn't help, so I pulled the battery. Ten or fifteen minutes after putting the battery back in and turning on my phone, it acted like it was rebooting and then suddenly a green android guy popped up on my screen with the words: "DOWNLOADING... Do Not Turn Off Target!!" under it. In the upper left hand corner it says "factory mode". I didn't push any random combination of buttons...just the power button. I don't know what to do! Someone please help, I can't not have my phone.

    *update*
My phone got past the android guy...but it won't charge still. It's stuck on the "charging" screen that shows up when the phone is off... but it won't boot up completely. It'll through the boot up process but once it gets to my main phone screen (where I can see my background and apps) it turns itself off again.

  • Stuck Downloading... Do not turn off target!!

I restarted my stock, unrooted, GNEX because it wasn't getting a data connection. When it restarted, it has the Green Android robot and "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!". Some tiny text in the lower left with device specs.
What's the deal? Haven't seen this before that I can recall. It's been stuck like that for 20 minutes.
    Help please.
    Thanks.

I took a chance and just pressed the power button. The GNEX rebooted normally and seems to be functioning.  Not sure what happened. If anyone knows, I'd still like to hear about it in case it happens again.

  • Frozen and won't reboot "Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!"

So, I'm just checking email this morning, and it froze on a message.  I didn't download anything, just trying to read the stupid email and it froze.  It wouldn't respond to anything.  My buttons on the bottom would turn off as I touched them as if they might respond eventually, but they never did.  I waited, patiently. Nothing.  So I tried to shut the phone off, it wouldn't respond to that either.  Still stuck on the stupid email message.  So, I pulled the battery and put it back, tried to start it and it was stuck on the Samsung logo.  Wouldn't change, move along or anything.  Tried to pull the battery again, same thing.  So, I'm here on the internet and look up reset procedures and I try the one about the volume down button and the power button.  So, here I am at the android man shoveling spit and "Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!  What the ham sam?  It's stuck again, but now on this screen.  Anyone have anything for me to try or should I just go return my phone?  I just activated this one maybe 3 weeks ago.  =(

I actually did end up talking to a technician on the phone.  2 actually and they were very nice and knowledgeable but it ended up we couldn't get the phone going?  Then, at 11:30 pm, it turns on!!!! Scared the crap out of me and said it was in recovery mode, so I let it but then it stared forclosing apps, like daily briefing and the INVOPATH or something like that said it wanted to update but it never did.  Anyway, my new/refurbished one is on it's way.  I love Verizon!  Always helpful!  Maybe this phone was just a dud.  But, the one good thing about it actually turning back on even if it was still messed up, I got to factory reset it so my info wasn't on there anymore before I send it back int.  That makes me feel a little better.  Oh well, thanks for listening.

  • Fascinate stuck on "downloading...do not turn off target"

got water damage. i didn't respond properly. with the above message, i tried charging phone and took out battery while charging, then put battery back in. same message. help still possible pls? thx.

Hey there singingfiend.  I am sorry to hear about your phone taking a swim. I know from experience that they don't fair well in water.
If you are unable to get past this screen after charging the phone and taking out the battery the only thing we have left to try is a master reset. Visit http://vz.to/tC9oiG for steps on how to do a master reset. You are going to want to try the alternate master reset.
If this does not work we will have to take a look at replacement options. Do you have insurance on the device? If so you can place a claim with Asurion at www.phoneclaim.com. Are you upgrade eligible? Dial #UPG to find out.  You can also purchase a phone through our Certified Pre Owned program.  These are phones that are in like new condition and are sold at less than full retail.  They also do not extend out your agreement so when your upgrade date comes you'll still be able to get the latest and greatest device.

  • HT204370 I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to restart, it has said "waiting" for over an hour.

I paused the movie download but did not turn off my IPad.  When I returned to complete the download, the "waiting" message has been on the screen for over an hour.  How can I complete the download?

I recommend purchasing lion on a USB drive at Apple Store. This will avoid all of the downloading hassles.
Also, be sure you clone your hard drive first. A lot of people want to go back to Snow Leopard and if you choose to do this cloning will make the process very easy.

I suggest using Windows system restore to roll back the updates, one at a a time to find the  one that caused it.

  • After installing iTunes and iPod, my computer will not turn off

I am running Windows XP, and have just installed my new iPod nano and iTunes. Now my computer will not turn off. When I select "Turn off computer" in the start menu, the computer goes through the usual process of shutting down -- then it restarts automatically every time! Once it has started up again, it sends an Error report to windows -- but they are not coming forward with a solution for this problem. It appears as a problem created by an "Unknown device driver". I now have to turn my computer off by the wall. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Try running the Combo update first ... OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo), and once it is successfully downloaded, then try to download 10.8.5.
Sometimes the combo will correct any minor glitches in the system and also ensure all necessary updates to that point are included.

  • My ipod will not turn off please help???

Everything works on my ipod, but it will not turn off. It will play and pause but not turn off.

I too have had this problem. In fact it seems to be a fairly common problem, suggesting that it is an unaddressed bug.
    Here's what you can try:
    1. Reset your iPod by holding down the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously for 5-10 seconds. After your iPod reboots, see if it will turn off. If not:
    2. Restore your iPod using iPod Updater, which you can download from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ . Restoring your iPod will delete all songs, pictures etc and reload the iPod's operating system. If that doesn't fix it, you can:
    3. Try a work-around. Can you turn it off using the Sleep menu option? If you don't see that in the main iPod menu, go to Settings/Main Menu and turn on the Sleep menu option. This didn't work for me, but others have een able to turn their Nanos off this way.
If none of these things work, your only option is to have Apple replace you iPod. You can do this by contacting Apple support, or by going to the Genius Bar at an Apple retail store.
Several people (including me) have seen the not-turning-off problem in conjunction with the Nano frequently showing a message saying that firewire connections are not supported. In my case my Nano became unusable because the firewire message would pop up so often that I couldn't navigate through the menus to get it to play anything. I took my Nano to an Apple store and the Genius Bar guy replaced it on the spot. Unfortunately the replacement also doesn't work (headphone jack doesn't work so I can't hear any music) so I will have to go back again, but don't let my run of bad luck prevent you from getting a replacement.

  • Ipod shuffle green statuslight will not turn off

    Dear
I tried several times to reset my ipot shuffle,
and to install new from the original ipod CD.
In itunes there is no problem, Ican see the ipot in the list, and there is no failure.
But when I disconnect it, and turn it on with the switch,
the green status led on the front is lightning, and it will
    not turn off.
When I push buttons, there is no response.
Before this failure, the green status light went out
after 3 seconds when switch on.
    what can I do?
I dont feel like wasting my time trying to get it
running again. What I need is a clear discribtion
what to do, because I did find nothing with this
    sympthom.
