Downloading dvd

I just purchased a mac pro, and have downloaded a dvd video which I created with a tivo dvr system. The dvd will play with idvd, but I can't get the video to open in idvd, or with final cut express, as they will not recognize that file format. Any suggestions?

MPEG Streamclip <http://www.squared5.com> can be used to convert to DV format that can be used in Final Cut Express or iDVD.
You will need the MPEG 2 Playback Component for QuickTime

does anyone know if you can download dvds onto your ipod touch without going onto the app store

Then you need a converion program like Handbreak (both Mac and PC). Handbreak has presets for the iPod. However, you will lose chapters and other selections items that a DVD has.

Copy the DVD to your computer's hard drive.  Note that DVDs have special structuring and you'lll have to have software to handle mpeg-2 encoding.
If they are commercial DVDs simple copying won't work if they are copy protected.

How do I download DVDs into my iTunes for my iPad?

If you're talking about commercial DVDs, we can't really help you. Most commercial DVDs are encrypted and the Terms of Use of these forums prohibit discussing software or methods of breaking that encryption.
If you're talking about homemade DVDs, try Handbrake. It's easy to use and has presets for the iPad.

  • How do I download dvd's to my Mac Mini from my dvd player?

    You cannot.
DVDs are encrypted to stop you from doing this.  Breaking this encryption is illegal.

    Sort of a catch-22.

If you've downloaded version 4.6 of the DVD Player, try moving the items "DVDPlayerUpdate.pkg" and "DVDPlayerUpdate200506.pkg" from your /Library/Receipts/ folder onto the desktop if those receipts are present. When you've moved them, try running the installer again.

You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.

  • Can I download DVD home movies into imovies?

Can I download DVD home movies into imovie to edit and create enhanced DVDs?

    Yes.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

I've looked up that iTunes dosent allow downloading dvds and then syncing to your iphone or ipod? Is this true? Has anyone successfully tried to upload DVDs through iTunes then iphone/ipod?

The law against breaking encryption goes directly to the heart of Fair Use. If I have to break a law to follow the law, one of the laws is not correct. If I have Fair Use rights, then any law preventing me from using my Fair Use should be tossed out. My point is that the encryption itself goes against the U.S. Copyright law as it stands, and, therefore, a court will eventually have to decide the legality of the one over the other. That's why we have courts.
Obviously, if you break a law you may suffer consequences, but, again, the courts will eventually decide who is in the right. It is a matter of what you are willing to do to protect your rights. And this does not apply, as in the examples given, to stealing a car or the like. I have no right under a different law, to steal a car, and a court then needs to decide which law applies. Please, let's keep our argument on track.
In the 1950's and 1960's, people defied laws against Blacks and Whites eating in the same cafeteria, or living in the same neighborhoods. For that matter, it was against the law for people from different cultures to marry. Were the people who defied those laws "reckless and irresponsible?" Our laws were at odds with each other. Courts (and the Supreme Court and Congress) finally decided in favor of the rights of the people over the rights of the State. The law is not a rock, never changing. It is a bunch of laws which sometimes need to be clarified.
There is always a need to wait for courts to sort things out. When you arrested people, they then went to court to sort things out. Yes? Otherwise, you arrest someone and they are just in jail. I believe that is called a police state, such as Russia had under communism. We have laws, and judges and courts to rule on their legality. That's how I want it. I hope that is how you want it.
I do think that the Justice Dept. lawyers, Congress and movie studio lawyers thought about Fair Use before trying to subvert it. I think lots of money was involved, and the rights of people to have Fair Use were thrown under the train of commerce. I also think, if they had been smarter, they would have spent more money and had Fair Use declared null and void. Oh, and U.S. copyright law does fall under the Constitution, it's just not a guaranteed right since the Founding Fathers weren't dealing with electronic intellectual rights in 1776. Let's not do a Justice Scalia re the Constitution being written in stone and not being a living document. If THAT argument were true, President Obama would be a slave under his interpretation.
You know, there is an easy way for this problem to be resolved. Whenever we bought intellectual media (CD, DVD, etc.) that falls under Fair Use, the sellers could just give us two, the original and the backup. THEN, encryption would be fine. What do you think the odds are of that happening?
I am not saying that people should be allowed to pirate what they want. Enough of my work was stolen when I was a photographer to make me a believer in copyright laws. Copyright law is a good thing. but let's keep the law as written, and enforce it equally, against users AND corporations.

  • Bought 60GB ipod for kids...how to download dvd..I am lost...what 2 do?

Hello, I just bought a 60gb ipod, I am totally lost as to what I need to do to download dvd movies onto the ipod.
I have worked out I need to convert it, but I am unsure of which is the best software to use...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

First of all, welcome to the forum. Second, your post is in the wrong place. This particular section is for the software known as Compressor. All that aside, take a look at this website.

Keep in mind that ripping DVDs for any other purpose than YOUR personal home viewing is illegal (at least here in the States).

How do I download DVDs from home onto my iPad?

I would suggest that you use a tool like Handbrake to convert the DVD to MP4 video suitable form for putting out your iPad.
Rules governing the use of such tools and so on vary around the world, so you should be knowledgable about your own local copyright laws. In WIPO signatory countries like the USA, you are permitted to "format shift" media that you own for backup, personal uses, and interoperability reasons. However, in the USA, it's a crime to possess the means to do so if that tool could be used to circumvent any technical measure that makes it inconvenient to copy the content. So, Handbrake operates in a gray area as far as US laws are concerned. Outside the US, there ought not be a problem.

  • Downloading DVD's to Itunes for Ipod Touch use

I know you can download cd's to itunes, but what about dvd's? I'm wanting the Veggie Tales and the only movie they have on there is Jonah, so I have that one, but I need all of the others for my 4 yr old son. Thanks !

To do so you would have to use software to remove the encryption on the DVD, which is illegal in the US and hence can't be discussed here per the Terms of Use.
    Sorry.
