Downloading DVR Content to My MacBook

After getting an HDTV, I'm now renting a digital video recorder from my cable provider. I use iMovie HD6 on my MacBook running Mac OS X 10.4.11. Until now, I've been using a digital video camera as an A-to-D converter when downloading content from my analog cable video recorder. It would seem that the ADC piece is no longer necessary now that the output from the DVR is already in digital form. If I can find the right cable(s) and adapter(s) to cobble up an HDMI-USB cable, should I be able to just hook this between the DVR and my laptop and fire up iMovie and download saved content? Or do I need either a later version of iMovie or some other hardware/cable setup?

The USB port is for firmware upgrades, and if there is a FireWire port, it won't work either.
Do this:
1. Plug in one end of your camcorder's composite AV cable into the cable box, and the other into the camera.
2. Use a DV to FireWire connection to get everything to the computer.
3. Turn on the box and set the camcorder to VCR or playback.
4. I use iMovie HD 6, but any version will work.
5. Play the recording on the box, and hit record in iMovie.

  • Download DVR files to my MacBook Pro?

We're getting ready to cut the Comcast Cable TV cord and save ourselves about $100 a month. My question is this: We've got a few shows recorded on two DVRs that I'd love to somehow save. Is it possible to download those from the DVRs to my MacBook Pro so we can still watch them after getting rid of our cable tv service and the DVRs?
It's badged Comcast and Motorola, DCX3400.

I suspect that stuff on your Comcast DVR is encrypted, thus you won't be able to off load it. I know there are ways to use your Mac as a DVR, but I'm not aware of anyway to get stuff that has already been recorded on a Comcast DVR off of the DVR.

i can't transfer downloaded content from my macbook air to my external hdd, when i try to drag it into the hrd drive it wont go in how do i fix this ?

What format is the external HDD in? If it's NTFS (= proprietary Windows), then OS X can read it but not write.
Eventually copy all content from the drive to a safe place, the re-format. FAT32 is the format which both Windows and OS X can read and write.

This may seem obvious, but presumably you have authorized the MacBook Air in iTunes?

  • How do I Download Additional Content

Hi...I've got a MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion fully patched and updated. I'm not usually a Mac user but I'm fairly comfortable with it when I do...I know enough to be a Power User. I purchased/downloaded Mainstage 3 today. It prompted me after the install to Download Additional Content but I had to restart due to some other updates I was running so I just figured I'd be able to do it when I was finished with the restart.
Now, when Mainstage is open, I go to the MainStage 3 menu and the option for Download Additional Content is grayed out. Why is that. What am I missing. I figure I'm just missing something easy. I've perused the various support forums and manuals and haven't figured out why. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I would recomend removing (Deleting) Mainstage and re-install from the App store, keep in mind the initial install is about 2-3 GB download, and then the additional content is about 30 GB.
To remove a Mac App Store app that appears in Launchpad
Follow these steps while you are logged in with an administrator account:
    Enter Launchpad.
Click and hold on an icon until you see all icons jiggle.
Click the "x" button in the upper-left of the Mac App Store app icon you want to delete.
Note: If you do not see an "x" button, either the app is not from the Mac App Store or you are logged in as a standard user.
Click "Delete" in the confirmation dialog to delete the app.
Tip: If you want to reinstall a deleted app, open Mac App Store, click the Purchases icon, then click on the "Install" button for the app.

  • "Download Additional Content" Does Nothing?

I've been using a trial of FCPX for a while and today I went ahead and purchased it from the App Store.
One of the first things I did was go to the FCPX menu and choose "Download Additional Content," but all this does is take me to the Updates section of the App Store where I am informed that there are no updates.
What's going on here? Do I already have the additional content just by installing FCPX? If so, how can I verify that I have the additional content?
Thanks in advance for your help.

For anyone who has this problem in the future: just wait, and the update will eventually show up in the Updates section of the App Store. I had installed FCPX to my MacBook Air to see if I could get the "Download Additional Content" to work there, but it didn't. However, this morning (almost 24 hours later), I have a notification in the App Store that the Supplemental Content 1.0 update is ready to install. Lesson learned.

You would be incorrect on that.
Commercial music videos are not to be downloaded, nor is there any difference between that and illegal torrent downloading of copyrighted material.
Such actions pertaining to commercial copyrighted videos / music videos (lots on youtube) is not legal.
Any distribution of videos, music or text without the express permission of the copyright-holder is copyright infringement
regardless of all of that, Google/Youtube clearly notes that its against their policy to allow same from their site on such materials (not all, but most of it there).
most such videos are not free and "open public domain" materials

  • DVR Content Wiped Out - Verizon Keeps Quiet About Known Problems.

While watching a recorded program on my FiOS Quantum MediaServer DVR, the show froze for about 20 seconds, and then the Media Server rebooted. It was back about 4 minutes later. Live TV was ok. I checked the System Information. It was fine. I went to the DVR - not fine. It showed NO PROGRAMMING AVAILABLE. There had been a number of shows recorded; the DVR was about 40% full before the reboot. Looking further showed the recording schedule was intact, as was the Series Manager. Shows I'd deleted the previous night showed as available to restore, but after restoring one, attempts to watch it revealed it really wasn't there. Repeated reboots, powering down, and "autofix" had no impact.
After about an hour on the phone, first with Tech Support and then Billing/Sales, I came to learn that this is a "known software issue". However, Verizon doesn't let you know about it until after the fact. WRONG. Verizon should be forthcoming and openly share information. I was repeatedly told, "Verizon regrets any inconvenience ... "  - often a very empty phrase that doesn't result in actions. After several exchanges about "how could Verizon make me happy", I settled for a callback.  While waiting I researched the alternatives available via the competition in my area. A few hours later Verizon called back and made me "an offer I couldn't refuse".  While my DVR content wasn't restored, we did come to an agreement that satisfied me.  A good outcome.  Verizon needs to introduce a "Known Issues Webpage" and share information better than they do today.  This is a standard for vendors in tech industries. Verizon should give it's customers the same things it expects from its vendors.

I don't believe its a known software issue as yours is the first I have seen posted, but maybe its really new. You may have a failed hard drive. If it is a software issue, you might try a cold init COLD INITUnplug the box.  Wait about 20 seconds.Plug back in and immediately begin repeatedly pressing MENU on remote until you see the word "run" on the front displayUsing the down arrow button, go down until you see "COLD".Press Ok and the box goes through activation process, including downloading the current IMG softwareNote it will lose a bunch of settings but will not lose recordings.  Some of the settings shows as recording schedule MAY be recoverable from the cloud during the cold init.

  • HT3209 Unable to Download HD Content

I am somewhat confused and VERY irritated. I have been dealing with the iTunes Library sharing not working since upgrading the software on my Apple TV as well as iTunes, but now on top of that, I can't even download a purchased HD movie to my laptop. I cannot wait over 3 hours while the movie downloads and buffers in the background before I can watch it, what would be the point?
I have a Windows Vista Professional laptop at home. I am saving up for an iMac, but they are quite pricy, and if I am going to purchase one, I want to get the top of the range, so it will be a little while yet before I can afford to get it.
Either way, between my husband and I, we have 3 iphone 4's, a 4S, 2 iPhone 5's, an iPod Nano, an iPod Touch, 1 iPad 2nd Generation, 1Pad 3rd Generation, and 2 3rd Generation Apple TV's.
We don't have a very fast internet connection at home, and I am not going to upgrade it, but we have always coped, because I download our purchases onto the local network, and we are then able to stream the content without much delay.
HOWEVER, since yesterday, I am receiving the following notification when attempting to download an HD movie purchased:
    >>>
This cannot be played in HD on this computer.
If you buy the HD version, you will have to transfer it to an HD-compatible device in order to watch it. Or, you can buy the SD version and watch it on this computer.
3 Button Options of Cancel | Buy SD for $14.99 | Learn More
    <<<
    1.     My laptop is capable of FULL HD 1080 Playback.
    2.     I am trying to download the content, so that I can stream it on my HD TV using my 3rd generation Apple Tv's, which I have always done. I don't actually want to sit and watch a movie on my laptop.
What on earth is going on? Are all of my friends and colleagues justified in mocking me for being such a great supporter of Apple and their products and quite right in advising that I rather buy a generic media server and I'll be able to stream anything from any platform to pretty much any device?
I know that Apple don't really seem to care about the opinions of their subscribers, who would when you're at the top of the stock market with a value of just under $500 Billion dollars, but are you telling me that as a consumer who has vested so much money and time in your products and software that I now need to cut my losses and seek an alternate solution?
Somehow I don't see this as fair and I look forward to receiving a response from you?
    Kind regards,
    Ursula Bianchina

I'm not entirely sure this will solve your problem, but . . . here's what I did to be able to download purchased HD movies onto my pc whn I got the 3 button option you described and I quoted.
Open iTunes and click on the iTunes Store shopping bag. Now, scroll down to the bottom and click on "Purchased" (Important - this is not the "Purchased" playlist thing under the shopping bag). You should see all the movies you've purchased. Go down and "un-check" the box that says "Download HD when available". You can now download your purchased in HD movies on your computer in non HD format. They can now be played via airplay to your atv, but not in HD unless you cloud play them.
I'm still bothered that I can't download the format I paid for, but this is certainly better than waiting for my apple tv to finish buffering.
If there's a better solution I hope someone will share.

  • I am trying to download windows 7 on my macbook pro but it keeps saying the disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.

Its all in the title. I am trying to use bootcamp to download windows 7 on my macbook pro mountain lion, but I keep getting this error. I tried going to Disk Utility, and my active volume already is formatted under Mac OS Extended (Journaled), so I don't know how to fix it. I already backed up the volume on an external harddrive. Also, everything under the volume I wanted to edit is greyed out, and when I try to restore the backup that I created via time machine, it pops up with another error that says "Could not unmount volume "/" (Resource Busy).
Please be gentle, I'm used to using windows and don't know like anything about computers. If someone could give me a detailed explanation for these errors and a solution of how I could correctly download windows on my mac I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

    Try a restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
