Downloading ipod classic contents to my mac

How do I download what is on my ipod (160 gb classic) to my mac?

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library. There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to iTunes/preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'Command + Option' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Try iPodDisk. This is a program designed to transfer music from iPod to computer.
Similar programs are Expod, Yamipod, Senuti and Music Rescue.
If you want to retrieve playlists, iPodRip has the feature enabling you to reconstruct them.

  • Syncing my iPod classic content to a new computer in Mountain Lion

I'm looking for a newer post about how to download my iPod Classic content to my laptop (running Mountain Lion) so that I can manage my books library. (I found a 2008 post but nothing newer.) I typically download a lot of audiobooks from audible.com and I want to keep them on  the computer, but uncheck them after listening so when syncing only the ones I haven't yet listened to are on the iPod.
I switched from a MacPro to my MacBookPro and I'm not sure how to download my ipod contents to the Library on the MacBook Pro. I can overwrite the MacBook Pro's library, if needed.

  • Can't upload iPod Classic contents onto a new computer

The PC that I had paired with my iPod Classic died.  I can't figure out how to upload the iPod's contents onto a new computer.  Is this possible?
I also put a new CD on my Mac that won't sync with the iPod Classic.
    What am I doing wrong?

I think the problem could lie with the sharing of the iTunes account. In itunes on your computer, under "Store", click "Authorize this computer" and login it using your brothers itunes account. Now try syncing the Ipod again and doing a FACTORY RESTORE of it

  • Transferring songs from a Windows-formatted iPod classic to iTunes on Mac

Hi everybody, I'm curious to see if this is even possible. My husband's Windows laptop died for the second time in three years, so he decided to switch to a Mac after seeing my MacBook last longer than both of his Windows laptops. :o) Anyway, now that the Windows hard drive is dead-and no, he didn't back up his songs to CD-he wants to transfer the songs on his Windows-formatted iPod Classic to iTunes on his Mac. I tried Yamipod, but it said "firmware unsupported" and quit-I suspect the Windows format had something to do with it. He has a lot of songs ripped from CDs and he doesn't want to lose them or have to spend time re-ripping them. Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

same thing happened to me. I purchased iPod Access from the internet (for about $15). This program will let you transfer your music and playlists from your iPod to your library

  • IPod Classic (160GB) seen by MAC not listed in iTunes

    Regrets if asked and answered.
I have an iPod Classic that did work with iTunes (9.2.1) but that was before my back up device crashed.  I was able to pull images off the backup and push them onto my iPod (no room on the computer), but of course I had to format the iPod to FAT32; it really did have to happen that way.  Now I am ready to put my music back onto my iPod.  I connected the iPod to my Mac (10.4.11).  iTunes would launch, but the iPod never listed.  I tried the Apple recommendations, Reset Retry Restart Reinstall Restore, but none of that worked.  I used Disk Utility to convert the FAT32 back to HFS+, I used Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to ERASE the iPod; that went well.  Still no luck being recognized in iTunes.
    Any ideas, suggestions, solutions?

    Put your iPod into Diskmode.
Connect the iPod to your Mac, if iTunes comes up, close it.
Then while the iPod is still connected, Reset the iPod, (Press Menu and Center Button for 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON.)
iTunes should launch and ask to Restore the iPod.
If the above don't work, Run the iPod disk diagnostic, most likely dying hardisk.
    Good Luck!

  • Does restoring an ipod classic (prior format on Mac) in Windows delete music?

Does restoring an ipod classic (which was previously formatted on a Mac) in Windows 7 delete the music already on ipod?

    Thanks fiend,
I don't have access to a Mac. This ipod (bought 2nd hand) is my first apple product & came with some music on, but I can't add any, till I reformat to use in Windows. Was hoping not to lose existing music but ..... Thanks for helping a novice.

  • How do I sync what is on my iPod classic to my new Macs

I had and old iMac that no longer works (hd is fried)
I have a large Library on my iPod and want to sync it to my new Imac and Mac book Pro.
I remember seeing a way of have the sync go from iPod to the computer but can not find it any more.
    Thanks

    Try Senuti.
It's a program that transfers music from iPod to iTunes on a Mac.
    As is Music Rescue.
There's also a similar program called Yamipod which has a Mac version.
I've used all of these on a Mac with great success.

  • Switch iPod Classic from PC to Mac

Hi, I recently dowloaded ALL of my music/videos (nearly 33 GB) to my new 80GB Classic iPod using iTunes 7.5 on my Windows Vista. I am now getting rid of the Windows and switching over to a Mac. I know that I must reformat my iPod in order for it to correctly work on the Mac but I do not want to lose all of the music that I already transferred using my PC. Is there anything I can do to retain the music files I have stored on m iPod?
Any suggestions would be tremendously helpful.
    Thank you.

You can copy what you have on the iPod to the Mac first and then restore it (which will reformat the iPod for Mac). If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
    iRepo Mac & Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • How To Move iPod & iPad Content To New Mac

My family has been syncing our iPods & iPads to one iMac's (Running OSX 10.9.1) iTunes (11.1.4). I got my daughter a MacBook (same OSX & iTunes) and want to sync her iPod & an  iPad to the new Mac, but without loosing the content form each device (Apps she dowloaded from the mobile devices & their settings (like game progress, etc.)..
I don't seem to be able to find any solution that works. Migration Assistannt did not work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

A device can only sync to one library at a time.  You need to put a copy of the library on her computer.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • IPod classic content wiped out

I've searched endlessly for a previous discussion/solution.  I've always had my ipod programmed manually (on Windows and Mac's) as I've never had my own computer (I'm poor and I travel a lot). I haven't figured out how to back it up to my external hard drive. I had been using it with my friends Mac. At some point the songs stopped playing unless it was through iTunes. The content appeared on the iPod screen but nothing would play. Then, catastrophe! Not sure what my friend did (improper ejection?) but all the music content was wiped out entirely. Says "no music" and says "111 GB Free." Also wiped out videos but photos remain. Is the content still hiding somewhere?? Anyway to recover it? Obviously for the future I intend to do do it proper and get a laptop to auto sync and back up and all that good stuff. But I appreciate the help for recovery!!

No advice? Must be bad news.

  • IPod classic not recognized by mac or itunes.... but otherwise works fine.

I'm wondering if there is any way I can save my music. I had to reformat my macbook due to corruption of whole disk encryption. My only copy of my music library was on the iPod itself. I was able to restore about 2/3 of my collection from the iPod to the mac. However, at one point the computer became nonresponsive while the iPod was mounted. Had to force a reboot. The iPod was not recognized after that. I connect it to my mac, it says "connected", but iTunes doesnt recognize this, and it doesnt appear on the desktop.
It works fine. All the music and movies, etc., are there, as well as other data I stored on it (which I also want to get back) (judging from free space indicator), but I can't mount it.
    I've done everything traditionally recommended.
    -Five Rs, numerous times
-Tried with different macs, 10.5.8, 10.6.1, different cables
    -Started iPod in disk mode
-Ran all the diagnostics, they're all fine
    -Played with iTunes helper
    -Reinstalled iTunes
-Tried on completely different macintosh, same problem
For some reason this thing really doesnt want to mount, but when I use the iPod it's clear all the data is right there on it.
Will I have to bust open the iPod and take out the hard drive, and mount it in another enclosure to get my data back? That's the only thing I can think of at this point. Any other ideas?
    Thanks-

    diagnostic shows....
