Downloading Leopard?

Okay, well I plan on getting a Macbook or Macbook Pro soon. But I live in Mexico, and the only reason I'm getting one is because my parents can make monthly payments on it. Now, I went today to Office Max to go check it out and the only one they had that met my requirements (160GB HDD and 2GB RAM) was a Macbook pro. Now, I want to have to most up to date Macbook out there, so I checked the lable. Much to my distress I see that despite it having a 2.4 Core 2 Duo processor and all the hardware up to date, it's still running on Tiger and iLife '06. Then I noticed a sign that was right next to it that said "Buy a new Mac and download the OSX Leopard for FREE.
When I asked the clerk about this he said it was true and that they showed them how it was done (but he didn't remember how. <_<) and that supposedly they gave you some sort of code to get it and you have to download it/install it in the form of an update or something.
Then I asked him about iLife '08 (Because I know it's supposed to come bundled with it now) and he said he wasn't sure but that he thought that when you downloaded Leopard you'd download iLife '08 as well.
Well, I really wanna know if this is true or not because, honestly, I'm buying this because I need a computer that will run photoshop quickly along with my tablet so that I can actually work on my art. =(
I don't want to have to realise later that I have to buy Leopard and iLife '08 separately and have to install them, potentially crippling/erasing my system/files. =(
So yeah, I just wanted to know if this was possible or whether it was a load of bull. =(

I seriously doubt that anyone can legally download Leopard, not even a dealer, not even an Apple Store.
iLife '08 is not on the Leopard DVD. It's a separate package.
I would order a computer from Apple directly and be sure it comes with Leopard and iLife preinstalled. That's the safe way.

  • I have a I Mac 6 years old. We downloaded leopard and now the computer won't recognize the mouse or keyboard. What do we do?

I have a 6 year old I Mac. Last night we tried to download leopard and now it doesn't detect the mouse or keyboard. Then, the whole thing wouldn't reboot! Help!

Download means to install off the internet or a computer server. Leopard 10.5, and Snow Leopard 10.6 are only available on CD. A 6 year old iMac should be able to install 10.5 from CD, if the following requirements are met:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2275
And if these are met, 10.6, Snow Leopard can install on them:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
Are you sure you meant download, and you meant Leopard?

  • Can't video chat with certain buddies since downloading leopard.

Ever since I downloaded Leopard I can no longer see one of my buddies on my buddy list using iChat (AIM). I can add her, but then her name flashes in the list and disappears. I can click on her name to start a chat (if I'm fast enough), but it won't allow me to video chat with her.
I don't have this problem with any other people on my list and I can see her on my buddy list on my PC without a problem. She also has leopard on her iMac.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It seems to be caused by a combo of Circumstances.
At the point you appear to be I would go to Users/(your Account)/Library/Preferences and delete All the .plists with ichat in them.
    and the Restart iChat.

  • After Download Leopard, no more "Dingbats"

Last Week, I downloaded Leopard. Now, my fonts wingdings 1,2, and 3 and other nice locking Dingbats have disappeard from Appelfonts. I am using Pixelmator and need nice locking figgers. Where can I find this one. I can buy 50 of them.
    Sorry my bad english.
    Karl

I still have them. However, the first time I ran MS Word, it loaded a lot of fonts. I found them in /Applications>Microsoft Office 2004>Office>Fonts. If you have MS Office, run one of the applications and see if the fonts are loaded.

Is the patch you're talking about for Leopard itself, or for
the extension? If the patch is for Leopard, I'd assume that You'd
have to get it from Apple, but I don't know where to look for that.
If the patch is for the extension, then you probably need to go to
the developer's site to see if the patch is posted there, or
contact the developer directly to see where this patch may be if
    indeed it is necessary.

  • Trying to install downloaded Leopard on my macbook pro intel core duo

I purchased Leopard from a third party site in which it was downloaded. I'm wondering if I can install it on my Macbook Pro? Everytime I open it is says to restart in order to install but it takes me back to my desktop everytime. The only reason I'm upgrading is because I purchased some photoshop extras and in order to utilize them I need 10.5 or 10.6. I don't want to upgrade to 10.6 and I'm not quite sure if I can.

To elaborate on William's point above about the software likely being pirated: Apple never, ever sells "downloadable" versions of its software. (Updates are provided via download, but full releases are available on DVD media only.) No reseller should be offering such a download for sale.
Plus, you cannot install a Mac OS onto a hard disk that is the boot drive for that computer. So if you downloaded a version of OS 10.5 onto your Tiger (10.4) computer, you could not run the installer. A running system can't upgrade itself. That's why you must have the software on DVD and boot from that DVD. (There are other ways--sharing DVDs across a wireless network or booting from an external drive.)
For now, call Apple sales (1 800 MY APPLE in the US) and purchase a legal, on-DVD copy of OS 10.5--they are still making and selling them.

  • How to Download Leopard from the Apple site

Well my MBP dumped its hard drive this weekend. I have installed a new HD but I can't find my Leopard installation disk any where.
Is there a way I can download the entire OS from the Apple site?

No. Your Mac if it came with Leopard shipped with operating system discs for Leopard restoring. If you lost your discs, call AppleCare for replacement discs. If you bought your Mac from a non-Apple authorized source, contact them for the discs, and ask them to contact AppleCare for the discs if they lost them. The discs that shipped with the Mac should not be separated from the Mac, and should always be kept in a safe place.

  • Can I download Leopard

and burn it onto a disc and install it on my iBook.
I am currently running Tiger (10.4.8) and need to upgrade to Leopard.
I have a 4.7G DVD and a Double Layer 8.5G DVD. (not sure what the double layer is for, but I do have one.)
I do not know how large the download is and if I can use a DVD instead of a CD.

There is no free or paid download of Leopard. You have to buy.

If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:

    MB576Z/A  Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A  Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
The DVD should look like this
Caution - Leopard does not support classic mode. So, if you currently open OS 9 apps in classic mode, you won't be able to do this if you upgrade to Leopard.

  • No outgoing email since downloading Leopard upgrade

Downloaded the lengthy Leopard upgrade yesterday, now any outgoing email is stopped with the statement, "SMTP server doesn't support authentication - check settings". I went through all settings with the cable company (Charter) tech support and he concluded the problem was with Apple. I went through the Apple posted troubleshooting routine with no help. My Imac with OS-X 10.3 wired into the Airport device works fine.

I'm replying to my own issue. After a long discussions with both Charter and Apple tech support, the only solution was to re-install OS X 10.5 and forget about 10.5.2. I doubt that I'm the only person in the world with Charter and the upgrade that had this problem. Maybe some day in the future it will be resolved. Apple tech support sent me a copy of what the upgrade should do, and it seems worthwhile if it didn't shut off sending email.

  • HOW DO I DOWNLOAD LEOPARD

I need to buy several updates in order to buy Lion and I can't even find where to buy Leopard... I know I'm illiterate in the computer ways... but I really feel dumb now!!! Someone please help me!!!

You can't download it but you can skip it & go straight to 10.6.x...
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

It looks like they might still have it...

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[14]
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[14]
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Downloadable Leopard OS X 10.5.0??

trying to wipe clean older macbook and reinstall 10.5.8 OS X but do not have install disc.. HELP?? Can I download it from SOMEWHERE?  Any help would be so appreciated...

The retail version of 10.6 does not have iLife included and the App Store version of iLife ‘11 programs (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band & iWeb) will only work with 10.7 or 10.8 with the latest update requiring 10.9. You can get the iLife ’11 DVD which will run on 10.6 on eBay or Amazon.com fairly cheap.

  • Do I lose my info when I download Leopard?

I just bought Leopard to upgrade my Tiger, but I wanted to know if I need to put all my files on an external hard drive so they won't be lost in the process or they will stay on.
    Thanks!

provided you just drop it in and do an upgrade install and NOT an erase and install, you shouldnt lose any data at all.
Of course it is always a good idea to have your important data backed up prior to doing an OS install.
    hope that helps!

And, is it a PPC Mac, or an Intel Mac?

  • Installing with a Leopard download not DVD

I have two questions / problems:
    1. I used Boot Camp Assistant to create the 32Gb partition and then ran the Windows Home Edition (version 2002) install CD. It did not give me the option of choosing FAT or NTFS and formatted the Windows partition as NTFS. How do I get it to format it as FAT?
    2. Having successfully installed Windows XP Home Edition, how do I install the Boot Camp drivers? I only have Tiger install CDs and downloaded Leopard from Apple's web site so I don't have the install DVD for it.
    Thanks!!

    1. Your XP must be at SP2, once Windows is installed on NTFS there is no way to go back to FAT32 without reinstalling.
    2. This is the first I've heard of a Leopard install by download. You must have a Leopard disc to get the drivers.
