Downloading Lion on a Lion-based Mac

I just returned to the Mac realm after hair-pulling years in the WinWorld, purchasing a MacBook Pro with Lion (10.7.2) already installed. Coming from the PC side of things and being kind of a gearhead when it comes to OSs, I'm used to having a physical copy of the OS in my hands in case I do something stupid and have to reformat. I've read other posts saying that you have to hold Option and click on the Lion description in the App Store to make the "Installed" button go away, but it only turns into a price and demands my CC before I can continue. Since I already own the license, how do I go about downloading without buying another license?
So far, loving being back to the Mac.

Nate...
Follow the instructions here >  Create a Bootable DVD Copy of OS X Lion Installer < also includes instructions for re downloading LIon.
Or, for an external drive > Lion Recovery Disk Assistant
Also, you will want to familiarize yourself with Lion Recoveryin case your need to repair the startup disk or reinstall apps.

  • How can I download lion from Mac app store in recovery mode on an imac?

I bought a mid-2007 imac from a friend, who the computer was working perfectly for. When I went to start up it wouldn't start up (past the gray screen) from the regular HD no matter how many tricks I tried (resetting SMC, PRAM, etc), so I went in to recovery mode. I verified and repaired the disc more than once (even though it said it was fine), and tried to reinstall lion from the online recovery function but it said "item temporarily unavailable." I basically tried every combo of things possible before erasing the HD but nothing worked, so then I decided to erase the HD.
SO that happened, and now I can still boot up in recovery mode and it -seems- like if I can find a way to reinstall lion (which was the last os running), I may be back in business.
however, see the problem with "item temporarily unavailable."
I decided to purchase it from the Mac store online on a different device and it says it will email me a link in 1-3 business days (really??! That long to save me with an EMAIL LINK???), and my thought is that maybe I can log in to my email from the safari window and download it that way. I'm just afraid that I won't be able to access the Mac app store if that is where it downloads from.
Ultimately, I'm trying to avoid a trip to the Apple Store because this thing will be a nightmare to lug on public transportation. My questions for you are as follows:
    - how likely do you think it is that I'll be able to successfully download lion from the email link in recovery mode?
    - Do actual discs with lion exist anywhere in the wide world? If so, how can I get one?
    - would it be worth it to grab an old lion usb stick from amazon?
    - is there ANY other way to reinstall lion or install a new os on this thing without physically taking the computer anywhere?

What a silly company , i have the same exact problem with my macbook pro and i've checked every topic that mention this problem and they didn't solve it .

  • HT201257 This no longer works on Lion-based Macs

It seems that booting my Macs holding the D no longer enters the system into AHT. Is there still a consumer way to do this, or do I need to simply bring my Mac in for service? (which I'll probably need to do anyway, since every Mac that I gingerly took care of always blew a disk before the 3-year AppleCare contract was up). I'm grateful it happens just BEFORE 3 years. ;-)

For it to work you need to use the original installer disc that came with the computer. Then it should work by starting from the original disc, and after the chime immediately press and hold down the "D" key.
Now, if it so happens that your model had the AHT embedded in the hard drive, and you have since repartitioned the hard drive, then the AHT has been effectively removed. And, those models did not have an alternative AHT provided on their original discs. So, you would need to take it to an Apple store or service center for any diagnostics.

  • HT1338 Mac OS X V 10.5.8 on my MacBook.  I need to update to Lion.  Am I required to update previous versions or can I download Lion?

Currently running OS X V 10.5.8.  I need access mac mail via my server.  Do I need to purchase previous versions or can I purchase Lion and resolve the situation?

Hi, you need to either get the 10.6 Install Disc, which I recommend, or buy the Flash drive version of Lion & erase everything to inststall.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...

It's reported that if you have a MobileMe account that Apple will send you SL/10.6 for free.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory[(I recommend 6GB or more)
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading[(I recommend 50 GB or more.)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

What applications are not compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion"?

You'll need to buy SL/10.6 first & get it to 10.6.8, then get Lion... if you can run it.
Or if you can erase your disk...

  • I have an I mac and have just downloaded Lion,

Having downloaded Lion I find that I can no longer use time machine to go back and restore photographs, with snow leopard the I photo Gallery stayed on the desktop and selecting photos and restoring was easy.
Lion does not retain any functionality with time machine back up, having spoken at length to genius bar and apple help lines it would seem apple know this to be a major problem but do not know how or when it may be fixed. They also say that restoring snow leopard may not work as my libraries will have been changed by Lion.
As my business is photography and I need to access old images this is a bit of a problem.
    Any ideas.

...I want to know what works best, if i upgrade to Office 2011 or use Neo Office will I be able to send working docs to others who want to edit and then send them back?
Right now i saved a pages doc as a word doc and sent it and they edited and sent it back but i cannot work on it because i cant open it with anything but reader....
The problem with receiving Word or Excel documents is that many times OpenOffice/LibreOffice/NeoOffice will mess up the formatting or tables and such.  So "simple" documents will open fine, but anything more than basic text is a toss-up.  My work, I'll have to use Word or Excel to open a document about 25% of the time due to formatting issues.  If I were just viewing the document, I could probably deal with the formatting issues, but to collaborate and send back an edited document, that 25% pretty much forces me to use MSOffice. YMMV.
The simplest thing you can do is just download OpenOffice/LibreOffice/NeoOffice and try it.  It won't cost you anything except a little bit of time.  If you get too many "failures", then go ahead and purchase Office for Mac.

I have Mac Book Pro osx version 10.6.8 if I download Lion will it upgrade my Safari?
    Thanks

The most recent Safari version for Mac OS X is 5.1.7, and the most recent Safari version for Lion and Mountain Lion is 6.0.2, so Safari will be updated.

  • Is it possible to download lion on another mac

I am trying to download Mac OS X Lion on another mac with only downloading Lion once.

Yes you can install the same Lion Download to every Mac you own. After you download it, make a copy of it on an external drive or USB drive so you have a copy to install on the others and save on your Download Data limit.
    Cheers

  • Starting an hour ago, the Mac App Store says I need to download Lion 10.7.4 again.  Anyone else?

I am currently running Mac OS 10.6.8 with all updates on a Mac Mini (3,1--the model with 5 USB ports).  Previously, I purchased, downloaded, but did NOT install Lion 10.7.3.  Yesterday, I successfully downloaded 10.7.4 via the Mac App Store, but as before I didn't install it (planning to do that this evening).  However, starting about an hour ago, the Mac App Store indicates that Lion has been updated and that I should download 10.7.4 -- again, apparently.  I'm using the same AppleID account (the only one I have).  Anyone else have the same experience?  Is there a 10.7.4 version 1.1?  If so, nothing in the software description mentions it...

This answer sidesteps my question.  I'm aware that I could have upgraded from 10.6.8 to my previously downloaded 10.7.3 and then updated to 10.7.4 using the smaller updaters (I would favor using the Combo).  But since the 10.7.3 FileVault security issue directly applied to me, I wanted to upgrade straight to 10.7.4, where it was addressed.  Also, since my internet connection is quite fast, taking 15 minutes to redownload all of it again was not a deal-breaker for me.  Interestingly, the instance of 10.7.4 I downloaded last night is 25 bytes longer than the 10.7.4 I downloaded the day before.  Performing a 'diff -ra' within 'Terminal' between the two instances of the 10.7.4 Installer app revealed that the changes are confined to a single file within: 'Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/_MASReceipt/receipt', and that they look like timestamp differences, so I'm now guessing that the two instances are functionally identical...

I have Firefox version 3.6.22 (Mac) & keep downloading Firefox 6.0.2 for Mac (as prompted) to my new Macbook Pro, running Lion (OS 10.7.1) and it won't open and install. WTF?

something similar has been happening to me for a a couple weeks (even before the most recent update, but now is definitely worse) on my 2010 MacBook Air. Firefox freezes upon startup, and then freezes maybe every twenty minutes or so when I'm actively using it, staying frozen for at least a minute or two. it drives me crazy.

I had the exact same issue; Lion recovery from Command + R would hang with the logs showing the same message.  To resolve, I used Disk Utility to remove the recovery partition.  My Air then used Internet Recovery to load all the tools.  When using Reinstall via Internet it worked just fine.

  • I downloaded Lion for my Mac and now Firefox freezes whenever I try to open the NYTimes crossword site.

I've been using Across Lite for years to do the NYTimes crossword puzzles. I just downloaded Lion to upgrade my Mac OS. I've downloaded the new version of Across Lite to fit with Lion, no problem. But when I go to the NYTimes crossword page, Firefox freezes. Sometimes it won't even open the page, sometimes it opens the page but then freezes. I haven't had this problem with any other site.
