Definitely not normal. I suspect your Internet service might be the reason.

  • Mail in Mavericks is taking forever to "do its stuff" - and weird things happening

The upgrade to Mavericks on my iMac (late 2009, 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 12 GB RAM, 500 GB HD) went smoothly enough, but when starting up Mail it took forever to go through its database upgrade and email conversation upgrade processes.
So I went to sleep, and 7 hours later its still cleaning stuff up.
Friends on FaceBook have it worse - a few are reporting still being at the database upgrade step.
And the friendly link to "read about new features while waiting" leads to a page saying there is no information.
I know there were almost no new features touted for Mail in this upgrade, except for speed. But I am finding it slower. And I can't get read messages to get marked as read automatically as I read them.
And email I reply to no longer shows a "replied" curly arrow indicator. Is that gone now?
I have 6 accounts: 4 of them are Gmail and 2 are standard IMAP accounts with Hostgator.
I guess my questions  are are other people having similar problems, and why does it take so long to upgrade, and why the unread message count doesn't go down after reading a message (I see a count and am looking for unread messages and can't find any!), and why the reply indicator is gone.

Mail is still not showing all my Gmail from this afternoon. I can't figure out why it's so slow. Airmail ($1 in the app store) shows everything right away.
I don't necessarily thing Mail is better than Airmail, but I'm used to it. But the sheer speed of Airmail may have me getting used to it.
What on earth is taking Mail so long?

  • My e mail is taking forever to download.

My e mail is taking forever to download. It comes through fine on my i phone via the same wireless router. It is showing the amount of e mails being downloaded, I know there are no large files in there. Its as if something is blocking or slowing down the download. The rest of the computer works fine, as does outgoing mail. Any clues anyone?

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • I'm trying to download maps of the ranch but its taking forever for it to complete. says its enhancing map detail. how long is this going to take????? I need these maps up for work.

I require google maps of the porperty we manage to do my job I purchased the ifarmer app to help organize and keep better track of details in equipment logs and cattle records. I'm trying to download maps of the property and its taking forever. it says it is "enhancing map detail" but its taken so long the ipod falls asleep and I don't know if that makes it take longer. I also can't do anything else on the ipod until it is done downloading. Is the amount of time its taking to download this map normal????

    Great
Ok so this is what you need to do:
You need to put it in DFU mode:
How to enter iPhone DFU mode
Connect the iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes
Turn the iPhone off (hold down the power button at the top of the iPhone)
Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button
Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected
When you are in DFU mode your iPhone Screen will be completely black
Even though the screen is black, that doesn’t mean the device can’t be interfaced with either iTunes or a custom firmware client (for jailbreaking, etc).
Remember that if you see the restore logo, itunes logo or any message on the iPhone screen, you are not in DFU mode but standard Recovery Mode. Again, DFU mode is signified by having a completely black screen on the device. If anything else is the case, repeat the steps above until you enter into DFU mode successfully.
Now you can restore - once restore is completed the Exit DFU mode
    Exit DFU mode on iPhone
The simplest way to exit out of DFU mode is to hold down the Home and sleep/power buttons on the iPhone while connected to iTunes. Then just hit the power button as and this should reboot the device as usual.

  • HT202159 how long should an upgrade to Mountain Lion take? Our original download was interrupted by power outage and now seems to be taking forever.

How long should an upgrade to Mountain Lion take? Our original download was interrupted by power outage, it seems to be taking forever.

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

It might have been a corrupted download or a bad install. It happens sometimes.
Restore your system from your latest backup and try again.
Ohhh... How can I do that? I keep trying to shutdown the laptop but it's not letting me. What should I do?
    Thanks for the response, btw.

  • I'm backing up my new iphone 5 from icloud and it's taking forever to download my photos. It being going for four days. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm backing up my new iphone 5 from icloud and it's taking forever for my photos to download. It's been going for 4 days. It's downloaded 1400 out of 1900 photos. Am I doing something wrong?

I think you may not using the right technical terms.  When backing up to icloud, there is no way you'd get a message saying things will be wiped.  This message may be displayed when you are performing a RESTORE from a backup and then trying to cancel it.
If you are doing a restore, then you can reboot and restore again.

  • Okay so I just got a new MacBook and I'm setting it up. I decided to not download all of my files to iCloud drive and its taking forever to load to the next page. Is this normal for it to take so long? After all I didn't even download my stuff?

why is it taking forever to load!?

The files you are loading into the new computer are by wi-fi? If you have no other option
that may be OK but slow. A faster method would be Ethernet cable from internet router
or modem, instead of wireless. Most of the setup process can take some time.
What are these files? Where are they now?
Do you have a backup on-site, & not online?
Did you check to see if the operating system was updated as part of the setup before use?
The Software Update can locate later parts to the as-shipped system, that may be needed.
Other upgrades or new apps are through the Mac App Store, some through App Store, etc.
As part of the setup, you could use a migration assistant if you have a backup from the old
computer or have other files saved in an external hard drive to import.
Hopefully your process won't be drawn out too long...
    Good luck & happy computing!
