Downloading plug-ins for windows media player

i'm a brand new mac user -- bought a macbook less than 24 hours ago. i have not been able to trouble shoot installing plug-ins for windows media player. if anyone can advise, i would be most appreciative.

Windows Media Player for Mac was discontinued more than a year ago by Microsoft. They recommend using the free Flip4Mac player <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia >.
A good addition to your arsenal of media players would also be the stand-alone VLC Media Player <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/>. It's a Swiss Army Knife of media players.
Hope this helps!

  • Can't download plug in for windows media player. Have used download site and it says it worked, but plug in is not showing up on my list of plug ins.

I tried to hear a conference call on a website. Got a message, needed windows media plug in. Checked my plug ins, no windows media. Read tutorial on firefox support. Clicked on download. Got a window that asked for repair or change. Tried repair, then change. Need better directions on how to finish download. Got message download successful, but after closing firefox and reopening, still no plug in for windows media in list of plug ins. Went to site and could not hear conference.
Read support forum. Message about using about:config. Tried this, typed in about: config in start menu, but didn't see anything that looked like I could change to true like message said.
solved by opening internet explorer and going to website and listening to conference call on windows media player. There was a message saying click here if you want to enable media player. Did so, heard conference.
Tried using chrome. Got to hear conference yesterday. Today, there was same message about needing plug in when I tried to follow instructions to get plug in, it was as confusing and useless as firefox. The bottom line is I tried to do everything set forth in firefox's forum suggestions and can't get the windown media plug in to show up in my list of plug ins and can't hear conference calls on firefox.
Chrome did say they were working on getting plug in available at chrome store.
I agree with comments that I was able to go to web sites and hear calls before firefox made an update that removed my windows media plug in. The simple download fix, presumeably from windows, does not work, apparently because firefox can't find the fix. That is not the user's fault, and it looks like windows tried to provide a fix, and firefox won't recognize it.
Bottom line, it is easier to use another browser, than try and get the windows media player plug in installed on firefox. What good is a browser, if you can't hear a call on the website that the browser takes you to? Please make it easy to install the windows media plug in on firefox. Thank you..

Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
    (1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
    (i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
    (2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
    Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.

  • Downloading stuffit expander for windows media player 9 download

I want to download windows media player 9 to my mac mini b/c a lot of the emial files i get are .wmv not .wav files and of course Quicktime Player does not support .wmv files. So of course i need window media player but in order to download windows media player, i have to download stuffit expander to expand the files. But i am having issues with stuffit downloading to my computer. It is saying "mouting failed". Can someone please help me out??? It would be greatly appreciated.

I'm very new, but installed Stuffit just a few days ago without issue. Since no one else has jumped in, all I can offer are my guesses, but I guess that's more than you've got so far:
If you do a "Get Info" in the desktop, are the "Ownership and Permissions" (click the "details" arrow below it) such that you have read and write permissions to the desktop? Also, by now, if you haven't tried re-downloading it, I'd do that. My StuffitEXP10.dmg file is: 8,665,578 bytes in size for reference. Hope you get it squared away.

  • QuickTime plug-in for Window Media Files?

Microsoft recently announced that they will stop developing any update or improvement for Window Media Player for the Mac: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060113/apon_hi_te/microsoftapple
It is a little disappointing aspect because sometimes I keep running into cool websites that have many WMFs but few or no QT support. Right now I'm unable to play any WMF because Window Media Player is very buggy.
Is Apple going to push for some kind of WMF plug-in support for future QuickTime app since Microsoft is going to kill off development for WMP for the Mac?
    Please advice.

Windows Media Player 9 for the Mac has not been updated since 2003 so Microsoft's announcement is disingenuous to say the least. They haven't supported or developed the thing in, literally, years.
I cannot say enough good things about the Flip4Mac WMV player that allows you to view WMV files in Quicktime. There is also a browser plugin that lets WMV files play in Safari just like WMP9, only BETTER! And the player is now FREE. Strangely, Microsoft is even recommending it as a replacement for WMP9. It works perfectly on sites like CNN that use Windows Media Player for their video content and is compatible with more codecs than WMP9. Check out Microsoft's website for information and download.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/flip4mac.mspx
I highly recommend you download and install the Flip4Mac WMV Player. You can say goodbye and good riddance to WMP9.

  • Why does Firefox require a Plug In for Windows Media 11 and it doesn't exist for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

I wanted to listen to an Internet Radio Station and every time I clicked the listen now button on that site, Firefox tells me a Plug In is required for Window Media Player 11 so I follow the link to be told it is a manual download. When I get to the download site, I cannot find a Plug In download that is suitable to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit so, I cannot listen to the radio station I want too and would like to know if there are any other options.

You can use the new WMP plugin for XP/Vista as well on Windows 7 with WMP 11.

  • Plugin for Windows Media Player is not working with Firefox 4 on Windows 7

I updated my Firefox to the latest version 4 yesterday, but since this time seems plugin for Windows Media Player not working anymore. When I visit some website with embedded video - like [http://www.ta3.com/sk/live this] - the window with WMP is not displayed and no video is playing. The website reports: You don´t have any plugin for playing of this video.
I reinstalled the plugin for WMP several times - with no success. This problem is on all webpages with embedded video for WMP. The installation of WMP plugin is successfully finished, but no video is playing. I checked the “plugins“ folder in the installation directory of Firefox and everything seems to be OK. Where is also the problem? Please, help me with solving of this problem...

You are going to need to have two versions of the video file. One for Mac Quicktime users and one for WIndows Media Player users.
WMV Studio Pro looks like it could meet your needs.
    http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm
However you will need a Windows Media Server to stream the WMV file otherwise it will act as a download only.

  • DRM for Windows Media Player on the ipod

My ipod is worthless, if it can't play files with DRM for Windows Media Player. My library, that offers this files for download says, it would cost 50.000 dollars to provide also ipod-compatible files. Because they can't spend this money, I will need a new mp3-player!

The specs for the iPod (box, website) are pretty clear about what formats it supports. Unfortunately, protected WMA files are not supported.
If the rights you have for those files includes burning them to an audio CD, you might want to do that.

  • EXPORT LONG FILES IN 1080p for Windows Media Player

Hello, need some help in exporting and encoding some large files from Premiere CS6.
We have 4 Sequences, each totalling 45minutes in length and in 1080p (ProRes422).
We need to export and encode for Windows Media Player as quickly as possible.
Looks like each export is going to take over an hour from Premiere as "Match Sequence Settings"
-keep in mind there is NO AUDIO.
Once it's out of Premiere as an MPEG, I can transcode to any format. Ultimately WMV would be optimal,
but we need to transcode the MPEG into a MOV file before 'Episode' will accept it, just to make the WMV files.
Target files: (4) 1080p Windows Media Player compatible files
Does anyone have a better workflow workaround? Midnight hour and need help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

Thanks Jim, I can't export to WMV out of Premiere or Media Encoder. I use Episode to make my WMV files, and since Episode doesn't take MPEG in from Premiere (sigh)
I have to first make them in Quicktimes..
But yes! Anything Windows Media Player can handle... should I just go with the 5GB MPG files? No way for me to test, I'm on a Mac and these are playing on a PC
    thanks for your help

  • Quick time file to be converted for windows media player usage on web site

i have a quicktime file and need to convert it for usage on a website through windows media player. i have final cut and compressor and can convert it to mpeg 1 and 2. is there a recommended codec or tool i should use for the conversion. the file will probably be viewed through a downlaod versus streaming video...if that matters.
    thanks
    dennis
G5   Mac OS X (10.3.7)   i have final cut and compressor sw

Although I dislike MPEG-1 because of the large file size those .mpg files are commonly used on the Web. They can be played by nearly any computer and are not "Player" dependent like WMP or QuickTime so each user can decide how to view them.
As a bonus they are a "playback" format which makes editing and repurposing them a bit more difficult so your media is a bit more "secure".
I'll stick to QuickTime formats (avoiding H.264 video codec) and force QuickTime down their WiMPy throats. Millions of PC's have QuickTime installed (because of iTunes) and others can easily download the free Player and browser plug-in. By avoiding H.264 my files can be viewed on Mac's and PC's that can't install QuickTime 7.

  • Cannot view or play audio or video coded for windows media player, and do not see javascript

I designed a website that uses a little bit of JavaScript. It displays fine in IE (9), but not in Firefox. Does anyone know why, and what the fix is?
Also, and more importantly, I coded audio and video files with Windows media player's class id. They will not show or (obviously) play in Firefox. I downloaded and installed the plug in for Firefox, but no change. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have run across this problem, and I'm surprised that Mozilla hasn't built a fix in the 4.0 version. So, any ideas out there?
    Thanks!

Firefox won't play the media file if there is a classid specified in the object tag. You either need to use conditional code to hide an object without classid for Firefoz from IE or use an embed for Firefox.

  • How do I find plugin for Windows Media Player in MacPro

In my previous PowerBook G4 I have been able to access TV newscasts from Europe, in streaming video, especially from Channel France 2. To do this, I have used Microsoft's Windows Media Player 9 for MacOS X, which comes with an asx plugin and it works fine. When I installed WMP in my new MacPro, the plugin was not installed. I queried Microsoft on how to solve this problem and I was informed that Microsoft no longer supports WMP 9 for the Mac and has no plans to upgrade it. Consequently, my alternative could be found in Windows Media Player components for Quicktime by Flip4Mac. This plugin allows you to play Windows Media Player files in the Quiktime player directly. I went to the FlipMac web site and downloaded it only to discover that the existing version will work only for G4s, not Intel Duo Macs.
Microsoft's media player 9 for the Mac is being used internationally for streaming video.
Does anyone know of an alternative plugin that would work and where do I find it?

There is flip for mac and VLC
    http://www.videolan.org
Give this web site a look see.
Your solution makes sense. But when I downloaded and installed VLC Media Player for Macintosh, I found that one needs to have a developer's experience to figure out how to make it work. It isn't as simple as Windows Media Player 9 which works easily after you determine Preferences. Video streaming from news outlets is instant. Instructions from videolan on how to use its media player are confusing. Is there a simple way or easy steps to set up VLC to play streaming video from network news outlets with player embedded in their web site? That's all I am interested in. Your thoughts will be much appreciated.
