Downloading RAW files in iPhoto on Leopard

Installed Leopard with iPhoto 6 and Aperture, and can download .jpg files, but not RAW. Download freezes. Using Nikon D-80. Anyone with similar problem?

I just upgraded to 10.5.1 Leopard and am still using iPhoto 6, and it recognized that I have raw + jpeg photos to download (the number of shots I took times two), but it only downloads the jpegs. I can manually add the raw images to iPhoto from my camera (Nikon D70), and I can open them once they're in iPhoto.
Maybe it's time to upgrade to iLife 08?

You will need OS X 10.7.4 and iPhoto 11 or Aperture 3 for this.

  • Working with RAW files in iPhoto 5.0.4 and Elements 4.0.1

I take photos in RAW mode and download them to iPhoto. When I try to edit the photo in iPhoto, the picture is a tiny little file that is impossible to enlarge with any sort of clarity. Also, the word "RAW" does not appear anywhere on the iPhoto window like I read it is supposed to.
When I drag the file to Photoshop Elements, I get an editing window that has none of the tools usually associated with JPEG files. I get a separate window in which I can darken or lighten the image, that's it.
Clearly, I'm doing something wrong. No one in their right mind would ever use RAW if this is how it works.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Jack!
If you're new working with RAW files, your right, it just doesn't make sense. RAW <imho> is a bit overrated. One thing you will need to keep in mind when shooting in RAW, is you will still need to take a well exposed image. What RAW files will allow are CHANGES in all areas of the image v. JPEG which may allow you to ADJUST a few settings in the image. My only suggestion would be to kepp playing around with PSE until you get the hang of it, it is an excellent image editing software. But realize, a well exposed JPEG and RAW file are hard to tell apart...
Personally, I do not directly download RAW files through iPhoto but will create a folder and download to here, and simply drage folder to iPhoto to import (which are then 'converted' into JPEG files). This way I have the original RAW images safely located outside of iPhoto as well as in iPhoto. You should set Elements as your choice of application to edit files inside iPhoto.
    Good luck, Rick

When I move a RAW file from IPhoto on my macbook pro to desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file to move across?

I create separate folders based on the year and then the actual date of when I take images. You can make those folders anywhere on any hard drive that is connected to your Mac whether internal or external. I also use the Photoshop Photo Downloader that is included with Photoshop/Bridge and it will create the date folder so all I do is create a Year folder.
Open Bridge or click on the Bridge icon in PS and in the File menu item in Bridge select "Get photos from Camera". It can be a camera connected to your Mac or a memory card from a camera. A window will open and you then select the camera or memory card. Set the location they will be downloaded to, just the folder and you can Browse to a folder that you created, then in the "Create  Subfolders drop down select what date stamp you want to use or or custom name or not to create subfolders at all.
I've never cared for iPhoto one bit. I tried it but found it way to restrictive. It likes to have full control over how you interact with your images.

  • How do I not import RAW files into iPhoto

I shoot RAW + Jpeg with my cameras... Up until a recent upgrade to Mavericks... I would put the SD card in the iMac and it would import all the JPEGs, and then say something like 75 files could not be downloaded.
Those were the large RAW files and I would then just move them to an External Hard-drive and use Lightroom and Canon's DPP to edit them.
After the OS upgrade the RAW and JPEGs now both import into iPhoto and onto the Mac Hard-drive.
I can't seem to find a way to not import the RAW file into iPhoto. Is there something I am missing?   I do not want those large RAW files wasting space on the mac, and I have notice iPhoto is really slow since the upgrade.
    Thanks for any help

    A. To move an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    B. iPhoto and Raw
    1. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut).
    2. Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
Further - and this is quite a consideration: Lightroom is not an editor. Like iPhoto it's a database app and images need to be imported, processed and exported from it. It occupies the same place in the workflow (manager/non-destructive processing) as iPhoto does so in makes zero sense to use both...

  • Import Raw files into iphoto

I'm having the same problem importing raw .nef files with a Coolpix5400, which is listed as acceptable for raw import into iphoto. There are several work arounds which seem to work for system 10.4.8 and iphoto 6.0.5. However, my experience is they don't work for systems 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 with iphoto 6.0.6.
If there is no other way, I guess I could reinstall 10.4.8 and iphoto 6.0.5, get raw to work, and then go back to system 10.4.10 and iphoto 6.0.6.
Has anyone had experience with raw files in iphoto 6.0.6 and system 10.4.10?
I know the original question was listed as answered. For some reason I could not enter a new question so I tried this way as a last resort.
    Thanks.

I presume that the economically-priced Mac Box Set containing OS X 10.5.6 Leopard, iLife '09, and iWork '09 would be the way to go. Do you concur?
Well that's the cheapest way to do it. You could, of course, buy a new Mac
Do you feel that my 20" Intel iMac--details listed below--would have any problems handling the upgraded programs?
It will have no problems with the updated OS or applications.
'm uneasy at the thought of upgrading my operating system, but I presume that chances of running into problems are much less than if I were upgrading a Windows OS. In case a problem arises my entire hard drive is backed up with a 1T external hard drive using SuperDuper software, but I prefer not to encounter a situation requiring me to use it for restoration purposes.
The key to any update or upgrade is to make sure that you have a good working back up. That way, should anything go wrong, you have a quick way back to where you started.
My tips for upgrading the OS? Disconnect the disk with the back up and all other peripherals when you do the Upgrade. Pop the disk in. Do a standard Upgrade. (There are some folks who swear that you should wipe your HD and start over from scratch before you do, but, frankly, that's overkill. I've been upgrading Macs since 1992 and never had a problem.

  • Panasonic FZ30 and LX1  RAW files with iPhoto 6?

I can't get an answer anywhere on this one so far, including from Apple.
Can I download RAW files from a Panasonic FZ30 and LX1 using iPhoto 6?
The list of supported cameras doesn't include either camera but does include the LC1.
Have any of you had any experience with either of those cameras and iPhoto?
    Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Updating the camera firmware to version 1.0.9 fixed the problem for me. This allowed iPhoto to correctly import both the RAW and JPG files from the camera.
My camera came with version 1.0.4 installed when it was delivered to me yesterday.
A workaround for the problem, if for some reason you can't do the firmware update, is to read the files from the SD card using a USB card reader.

  • Raw files on iphoto

hi folks! i have a nikon d80 and currently using iphoto '08 and wanted to use adobe ilustrator cs to edit my photos. i already set iphoto to transfer the photographs as raw but everytime i double click, for some magical reason iphoto converts my raw files to jpeg when it goes to illustrator. so i did my research and found out that i need adobe camera raw(ACR) plug in. i think my camera is not compatible with ACR so i downloaded Adobe DNG converter. now i think i'm in the right track here but now this is like playing chicken and egg.
now i wanted to convert my raw files from iphoto to DNG but there's no way i can access my iphoto pictures without iphoto converting my raw pix to jpeg. any suggestions? i really wanted ti use iphoto to organize my files. i do have some back up plans though. it's either i just use my super slow nikon software or buy adobe photoshop cs2(don't really have the money right now). please help! thanks!

Illustrator is not a photo or image editor. It won't work with things like the photo's Exif data and so on. Editing photos in Illustrator makes as much sense as writing your novel in a spreadsheet.
You don't have to go all the way to purchasing cs 2 (though CS 3 is more recent and will run better on 10.5), you can use Photoshop Elements which is really enough. About 85% of the capability for 15% of the price as someone on here mentioned once. And if you find a feature that you actually need that's not in Elements I would be very surprised indeed.
Other alternatives include Acorn, Graphic Coverter both of which are about the half the price of Elements. The GIMP and Seashore are Open Source, as in free.

What camera are you using? The RAW support is camera specific.  Have you installed the latest Digital Camera Raw update 6.01?
If you are already running the latest raw support, try to reinstall:
To reinstall you need to exchange files in the System Library. So be sure to backup your computer before patching the system library.
The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/CoreServices" Folder:
To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G  (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder")  and copy and paste "/System/Library/CoreServices" into the text field.
In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password.
Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.
    Then restart your Mac.
If the current support is still causing the problems after reinstalling, try to downgrade to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.07

  • No RAW files from iPhoto 9

I have a Canon 5D Mark ll and iLife 09.. At first iPhoto would not accept RAW files; then a friend fixed the situation and it did. Now, once again, iPhoto says the RAW files are unrecognized in that format. The JPEGS download just fine. Any insight anyone?

    Thanks, everyone, for your responses.
After an hour at the Apple Store Genius Bar and the thoughts of three different Geniuses, my problem was solved. I had changed from shooting the largest RAW files to smaller RAW files; apparently, iPhoto only accepts the largest RAW files. Too, there's a firmware update, hjell, that you might want to check out. You have to go on the Canon website to get it. This firmware is very recent, I think: 1.0.7; if you have anything less that might be your problem. Good luck!

Hi there, I need to be able to read raw files from an Olympus Stylus 1 via CS5 and Lightroom 4.  I have downloaded Raw file plug-in v 6.7.1 but still can't read the files?

    Read this table http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
The Olympus Stylus 1 was first supported in Camera Raw 8.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and CC.
It is not compatible with CS5 or older and never will be.
If you do not want to upgrade to CS6 or CC then you can dwonload the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all Stylus 1 Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5.

Neither Adobe, nor any other company that produces a Raw converter, ever retrospectively adds new camera support to old (obsolete) versions of their software.
