Downloading rented movie from library to ATV

I rented a movie from itunes and downloaded it on my laptop. I have not watched the movie yet and I wanted to watch it on Apple TV (ATV). I open my itunes and it is listed on rented movies and gives me an option to "move" from library to ATV (only after I downloaded the new update), but it will not sync to the ATV. The syncing starts but then 10 sec later just returns to the orignal screen without transfer. Suggestions???

Only the newest iPods (Touch, iPhone, Classic, 3rd gen Nano) support rental movies. You've posted in the forum for a much older iPod, one that doesn't supprt videos of any kind. Which iPod do you actually have? When did you buy it?

  • ITunes 11 won't play downloaded rented movie from iTunes Store

Last night I rented a HD movie from the iTunes Store. I downloaded it to iTunes 11 on my 17" MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.2 and Quicktime 10.2.
First off the movie has a blank icon but when I click on it it does show the details of the movie. However, when I try to play it all I get is this message — "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."
As far as I know everything on my computer is up to date so why is this message appearing? For the **** of it I tried the 32 bit trick but iTunes wont start under that!
I then tried playing movie on my Apple TV2 — I can see the movie in the Rentals section but here it is asking for me to Authorise my computer! When I do this on my computer I am told it is already authorised which I knew anyway!
    This is most annoying!

I am having an identical issue but it is for a Movie I actually purchased from the iTunes Store (Casino Royale).  I get the exact same error message in iTunes when I try and play it This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." and the artwork for the movie will not show up, even if I try and manually add artwork to the Movie myself.
My software is all up to date and I have tried deleting the movie and re-downloading it from iTunes a number of times.  Still nothing.

  • TS3274 my download rented movies from i tunes doesn't show up to play

My ipad 2 - I downloaded a rented movie and I can't find it anywhere.  I went to my itunes account and it showed I rented it. So then I purchased a song and it showed up so I rented another movie for 99 cents and it didn't show up.  Do I need to do anything with my settings - or do I need to download a certain app.  I am frustrated with it and might just use Netflix.

Thanks for discovering this answer. I was having the same problem. Don't feel stupid: I sold over $50M in hardware, software and services for a large IT company years ago and even I couldn't figure it out.

  • HT2729 I'm struggling to download rented movies?

I'm struggling to download rented movies from i tunes to my i pad mini. they download really slowly if at all. I can get to the loaded bit in the i tunes store downloads area but then the blue bar stops and it just continues to say "processing".
There have been occasions when I can start to watch a movie but it then keeps stopping all the time.

You probably have a very slow internet connection (download). Try and subscribe to a faster connection.

Apple TV taking 25 hours to download a movie from purchase in iTuntes library. Worse, I only have 24 hours to watch? Anyone help why this is happening?

How fast is your internet - sounds as though it's 1Mbps or less?
For HD movies 6Mbps is needed for near instant playback.
AppleTv has to prebuffer much of the movie to allow uninterrupted playback if you have <6Mbps, how long this takes depends on the average connection speed - at 3.5 Mbps currently it takes around 40 mins for mine to buffer HD whereas Sd is near instant to play.
AppleTV2 has limited memory and using it to do other tyhings while a rental is prebuffering can flush any downloaded protion requiring you to start again from scratch - it can be better to rent in iTunes then once it's fully downloaded play on AppleTV under Computers>iTunes library>Rentals column.

When I checked back on iTunes, where you click to rent or buy a movie it says "Downloaded".  Any advice on what I can do in order to watch this movie that I rented a couple of weeks ago?

The EXACT same thing happened to me last night!  Rented a movie; it had barely started and then froze.  When I touch the video app icon, all I get is a blank, dimly lit screen.  None of the other videos I own will display either.  Was your problem ever resolved?

Does it use data to watch a rented movie from iTunes on IPad? Is it streaming or just downloaded?

You must get the movie onto your iPad somehow. If you download it while on Wi-Fi you will not use cellular data. Once the movie has been downloaded you will not use cellular data or Wi-Fi.

    Hi Duncan,
To find a movie you rented from your Apple TV, look in the top shelf of the main menu. See this article for reference -

  • Rented Movies from ATV to MacBook iTunes

How do I transfer rented movies from my ATV to my computer?

Pretty sure this can't be done. I think you can only sync purchased content from Apple TV back to a computer. When you rent a movie, Apple TV tells you that the movie can only be viewed on Apple TV.

  • Can't transfer movies from iTunes to ATV.

I can download movies to my Pro and I can download movies to my ATV. But I can't move rented movies from the iTunes library on the Pro to the Apple TV.
    When I hit the Sync button I get this error;
"Live Free or Die Hard" was not copied to the Apple TV because you are not authorized to play it on this computer"
and it automatically sends it back to the library side.
All my photos and home movies have sync'd up fine from iTunes to the ATV but rented movies will not transfer.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes or play a purchased song, supply your account information, and sync the Apple TV.

  • HT1657 How can I delete a rented movie from my ipad before its expiration date?

How can I delete a watched rented movie from my Ipad before its expiration date?

    Hello, K M Cartwright.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You definitely can delete the movie prior to the expiration date.  However, the movie will automatically disappear from your iTunes library 24 (or 48) hours after you've begun viewing it.  Here are the steps on how to delete iTunes media.
How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store

Where do i download a rented movie from iTunes to so i can watch it offline on my macbook pro?

When you rent a film in the iTunes store on your Mac's iTunes then it should automatically download, and it should go into the Movies part of your library - when you have rentals you should get a Rentals tab in Movies

  • Transfer an iTunes rented movie from my iPhone 5 to iTunes or iPad?

How do I Transfer an iTunes rented movie from my iPhone 5 to iTunes or iPad?

    It says
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
