Downloading software updates on dial-up connection. Any faster way?

I would like to download and install the Mac OS X Update Combined version 10.5.6. However, I am on a dial-up connection (High speed not available) and downloading the 657 MB will take . . . wait for it . . . 68 hours.
Is the update available any other way?
Thanks!

Hi Wandatoo;
I am totally flabbergasted to hear that your Apple dealer refused your request. So far everyone I have asked did it without any questions at all.
You might try a library. Most libraries today have high speed connections and computers. If the download will take a significant amount of time they may ask you to come in at an off hour.

  • Installing downloaded software updates

I'm having a bit of an epic trying to install downloaded software updates. My internet connection is via a USB dongle in a very poor signal area. I downloaded the updates for OS X 10.5.4 and it took me about 36 hours for the download alone. When I tried to install them I got a 'Software Update' box with a bar that was supposedly to fill in with blue shading. Only a tiny bit of the bar filled in and it remained like that for 8 hours the first time I tried and 12 hours the second time. On both occasions text above the bar said 'Installing 3 (or whatever) items' and text below the bar said 'Configuring Installation'. Nothing else happened, for hours. Eventually I simply switched off. I assume I have the software updates on my mac but just can't install them. How can I install them? And if I can't install them are they available to buy on disc? Or should I sell up and move to the city to live in broadband heaven? As you can see, it is all a bit time consuming and I'm not that literate in this sort of thing.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Klaus1. I phoned an Apple store and they would only update my iMac if I brought it in but that would be a massive round trip for me (probably 9 hours). I then phoned AppleCare and they bluntly said that they could not send me a disc with the updates. Not good enough. There won't be too many mac users in the UK in the same situation as me so it wouldn't be too costly for Apple to post out updates to mac users who can prove their remoteness (postcodes, for example, could be used). Effectively what Apple seem to be saying is that if you can't access a strong signal then you will be disadvantaged and we will do nothing to help. Like I said, not good enough.
I'll sort it out in the end but I did expect more from AppleCare. I would happily pay them but even that made no impression on them.
    Thanks again.

And it will continue to come back no matter how many times you restart your iPad. Your iPad is in recovery mode now. That's a message indicating that you have to connect the iPad to iTunes on your computer in order to restore it. Something went wrong and there is no way around having to restore the device.
You can follow the instructions here in order to restore your iPad and make it functional again.

  • Unable to incrementally download software updates with unstable dial-up

I have recently moved to Angola and unfortunately only dial-up is available which is slow & very unstable so I am often disconnected. To date the maximum download/software update I have managed is about 20Mb.
Does anyone know of software that can manage interupted downloads and piece back together the file once all parts have been retrieved ?
I know this exsists in the PC world but I have found nothing for OS-X Tiger.
My guess is I am not the first with this problem so there should be something out there.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Hi JMB --
Tough situation you're in. I think it can be frustrating here having my Airport broadband connection freeze up from time to time -- you sure put things in perspective.
Give this download manager application a try, perhaps. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22616
I don't have personal experience with it, but, it did get a five star rating on version tracker, and it promises to resume dropped downloads from the point that they were dropped, which seems like it should solve your problem (if it works as advertised. It is shareware, and I don't know how much it costs to register, but a free trial download (ironic, no?) is available. Seems to be just what the doctor ordered for your problem.
Let us know how it turns out.

  • Can't download software updates in iTunes - error message "network connection timed out"

I'm unable to download software updates for my iTouch 4.1 in iTunes.  I have iTunes version 10.5, Windows 7.  i've tried numerous times in the past and always get the same error message.  I'm now experiencing problems with some of my apps. and I've attempted 4 times in the past 2 days to upload version 5.0. It goes thru the whole download (761.61 MB), says "processing file", then closes out and I get the following message:
"There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "xxxxx's iPod". The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are current and your network connection is active or try again later. Err = .3529."
I ran diagnostics and it said everything was fine.
Also not all the apps. on my iTouch are in my iTunes library even though I've synced my iTouch numerous times since I've purchased the apps. with my iTouch.  All the apps on my 2nd screen are on iTunes, but none of the apps. on my 3rd screen of my iTouch are in iTunes.

download with itunes, or with one of your devices, and re-try, most causes it the update server it self.

  • Download software updates

Please help me to update my software to iOS 5.1 as my ipad2 doesn't have software update how can I download software update?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, as your tagline indicates that your iPad is on iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

You can only update a device to the highest iOS version that it supports, which for an iPad 2 is iOS 6.1.3

  • HT1338 Troubleshoot downloading software update & apps in the app store

Does anybody knows why I can't download software updates neither apps in the app Store, It appears to be a Network error, does it have anything to do with TCP or UDP Ports?

Im a Spanish user, so this is the translation:
In SU appears: "Couldnt install any of the selected updates. It occurred a network error. Check your Internet connection and try again."
In Mac App Store appears: "can't complete your request. It occurred an REIT on App store. Try again later (7)"

This feature is only available on iOS 5 or later.  You must still be running iOS 4.  Connect your iPad to the computer you usually sync with and run iTunes software update.

No promises but a System Reset is worth trying:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide.  Pay special attention to page 162.  Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
Finally, the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.

  • Hi i want to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to OS X Mavericks or OS X Yosemite. My software update menu dosnn´t find any updates available. Help please, what can i do to upgrade to OS X Mavericks or newer version?

Hi i want to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to OS X Mavericks or OS X Yosemite. My software update menu dosnn´t find any updates available. Help please, what can i do to upgrade to OS X Mavericks or newer version?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, the computer's also incompatible with Mountain Lion and Mavericks; if desired, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

Double-click the white Adobe Reader Icon to open a new windows.
Double-Click the "Adobe Reader X Installer.pkg" file inside.
If it has already been installed it will notify you and say that it has been installed already.
If you no longer have those files go here to get the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Let me know how that all goes and if you have any hang ups.
ON TO THE NEXT POINT OF INTEREST
It sounds to me from researching the other white 'icon' you have that you are trying to install a copier by the brand of Rico Aficio.
    Possibly the Aficio 2090/2105.
If so the install CD/Driver download for that copier must have also wanted you to install Adobe Reader to view the User Guides/ Documentation included.
If you are trying to install said device then double click the white icon labeled Ricoh_Aficio...double click the installer file inside of that.
It should run a setup/install window like Adobe Reader did then go from there. If it has already been install also you can go to your System Preferences -> Printers to see if it installed correctly and is working properly.
You can get to system preferences by clicking the Apple icon very upper left on your screen and selecting it from the drop down.
