Downloading songs off Ipod onto new computer

I have a 30g Ipod Video, and I just got a new MacBook Pro and I was wondering if I could copy all the music off of my Ipod onto my computer? Is that possible?
Thanks

  • Downloading songs from iPOD to new computer

OK, seems like a common problem, yet all the FAQs and questions don't seem to get me where I need to go.
My first authorized computer is fritzed, can't access itunes, so I loaded new version of itunes onto my new computer and want to download all of my songs from my ipod onto the new itunes. All I seem to be able to download is the "purchased music". Since 75% of the songs on my ipod are from my CDs this doesn't quit do it for me.
I don't want to rerip all of my CDs onto my new computer (hours of work), I just want the songs from my ipod onto my computer.
Is there a way to do this?
When I open my ipod icon in "my computer" it only gives me 4 options of folders--calenders, notes, contacts and a text document-- no itunes music list to drag into "my music" folder.
    Somebody save me!

"OK, seems like a common problem"
It is, and it gets asked here on the iPod forums about 20 times a day!
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • How to download songs from ipod to new computer

I lost my harddrive and my songs are still on my ipod. How do I download the songs from the ipod to the new harddrive.

iTunes is set up to only let iTunes Store purchases transfer from your iPod to your computer. You can do this by selecting Transfer Purchases From iPod in the File menu. But for any other other media not purchased from iTunes try SharePod. It's a free program that allows you to transfer music from your ipod to your computer.

  • Can't put songs from iPod onto new computer

I just purchased a new computer, and would like to upload my music files from my iPod onto it. My computer recognizes the iPod, but won't let me copy songs to my computer. Does anyone know how I can do this?
    Compaq/HP   Windows XP

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • Can't get purchases off iPod onto new computer?

My old laptop crashed and I have recently replaced it. I have downloaded the iTunes software and now I'm trying to get the songs from my iPod to upload to iTunes so I can manage all my music. I have authorized my computer and some of the music has transferred, but I'm getting an error message which notifies me "Cannot transfer 100+ songs as you are not authorized to play them on this computer." Then it proceeds to give me instructions to authorize the computer. When I again attempt to authorize, it tells me the computer is already authorized. I have shut down, hoping this will solve the problem, but the same thing keeps occurring. Any ideas? I have no other working computers with any of this music. I want to load up some new music but if I sync at this point all my previous purchases will be lost.

try activating / Copying as Administrator (the 'real' admin)
or, if you dnt have ipod touch, enable use as External Volume, and then copy the music files/folders AS THEY ARE from X:\iPo_Control\Music (X: is the letter of yor iPod, may be differnent) into iTunes folder, and then import them; Itunes will arrange them correctly in file system

  • Is there anyway to get songs off ipod onto computer

Is there anyway to get songs off an ipod onto a computer, i want to put some songs on a different computer

iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

  • Moving Songs from Ipod to NEW computer- don't have old computer!! :-/

    Hi everyone,
I have a 30GB Ipod Classic. My old computer died and I no longer have it. I bought a new computer and want to transfer all the music from my ipod on to itunes. When I try and do this it tells me my ipod is already synced with another library and it can only be synced with one at a time. It gives me two options: Erase & Sync (Erase songs off my ipod and replace them with the few I have on my new computer) or Transfer Purchases (which it wont let me do because they have not been 'deauthorized' off my old computer).
Does anyone know how I can transfer the music from my ipod onto my computer without having my old computer that was synced to this ipod????
    Please help!!!!
    Thanks for reading
    saz

    Regarding your purchases:
In iTunes, click Store > Authorize Computer and enter your information
When it says it is successfully authorized, connect the iPod and click Transfer Purchases
There are several applications that can be used to recover purchases from the iPod in the event of a computer failure, and no backup.

  • HT1391 how do i get my itunes library off ipod to new computer?  only getting songs purchased not downloaded from cds etc.

How do I get my itunes library off an ipod onto a new computer?  I am only getting songs purchased but not loaded from home cds etc.
    thanks,

" I am only getting songs purchased but not loaded from home cds etc."
That is correct.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  The ipod is not a backup device.
Copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Computer Crashed...trying to get songs from Ipod onto new comp...

I looked at a few old threads with similar problems and got myself to the very beginning part where you say "no" to replacing your old library with the "new, improved" empty library (GAWD!) and then I clicked on my Ipod in the "source list" to change it to "manual updates" and then it started to UPDATE!! I freaked out and despite it saying "Do not disconnect" I quickly disconnected it. Soooo, now what?
    This is SO STUPID! Why on earth is it so difficult to get your songs reloaded into Itunes once you re-load it onto your computer?! I am sure I'm not the first person to have a computer crash. {frustrated!!!}
    Thanks for any help!
p.s. My computer guy told me to just do a search on my comp for all my old "*.mwv" files but that didn't bring back any of the 100's of songs I had loaded off of discs...just a few that I had downloaded.

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • HT201272 Transfering songs from ipod to new computer? its only transfering a few not all

Can anyone tell me why my new computer wont transfer all my ipod songs to the library only a few and then when i try to sync new songs it says it can only do it from one library and wants to erase all the songs from my ipod when i click transfer from ipod to library its only transfering a few selceted songs

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Copying Songs from Ipod to new Computer

My previous notebook crashed and all the songs on my Itunes are all gone. I wish to sync songs from my Ipod to the new notebook. How do I go about doing that?
    Please help.

    Hello Mactan22,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."
