Downloading .tar.bz2 files ...

... why in **** does Safari add another .tar to .tar.bz2 files, and how do I stop it? Many thanks for the person who knows this one.
-peter

Hi,
It's probably due to the mime encoding specified on the server side - Safari tends to believe what it's told.
Assuming you're getting the file from wireshark.org, that download is reported as 'Content-Type: application/x-tar'
(Compare that to the gzipped tar file there which is correctly defined as 'application/x-gzip')

  • Extracting tar.bz2 files.

How can i extract tar.bz2 files?. zip, jar, tar can be extracted within java. But how tar.bz2?.

Some tars have built-in knowledge of the bz2 (bunzip) compression format.
Tar ("tape archive") is to package several files in one archive or to extract them. The archive files can be called "*.tar".

  • How do I start Firefox 4 from KMenu when I downloaded and installed Firefox4.0.tar.bz2 (only launches from terminal), and 'apt-get' installs Firefox 3.6.15 even though I tried to "--purge" it from Linux?

I downloaded and installed Firefox 4 RC using tar.bz2 so that I could still use Firefox 3.6.15 as per normal, having to start Firefox 4 using the terminal which worked great (except for many videos on different websites). When Firefox 4 was released, I suppose I was in a hurry to get it to work normal from my menu, but it kept saying that 3.6.15 was the latest version (I'll be quite embarrassed if it wasn't available for Linux users - I do love Firefox!). I did something silly, like purge Firefox from my operating system (Kubuntu 10.10) and when I reinstalled it was still 3.6.15 (it wasn't really downloading, but unpacking). Am I in too much of a hurry or is there a fix-it? I can use Firefox 4, but only through the terminal and I suspect it is slower than it should be. I would like only one version now.

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

  • Linux .tar.gz download is missing files

    Hello,
The .tar.gz installation archive download is either missing files or the installation instructions need to be corrected. When untarred, only the file "libflashplayer.so" is unpacked. Per the installation instructions, "a directory called install_flash_player_10_linux will be created" and it should contain a file "flashplayer-installer":
    ~/downloads$ tar -tf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz
    libflashplayer.so
    ~/downloads$
I've downloaded it 3 times, so I doubt this is an instance of random corruption. Also, if libflashplayer.so is placed in the Firefox plugins directory, it causes Firefox to segfault upon loading any Flash-using web page. Investigating with strace leads me to believe this is due to missing libraries (which, I'm guessing, should be installed by the nonexistent flashplayer-installer script).
Am I missing something obvious here?

I was able to get Flash working by installing libCURL and manually installing libflashplayer.so. I would like to point out that the libCURL dependency is not mentioned in the installation instructions anywhere. Maybe the non-existant installer program is supposed to notify you if you are missing dependencies?
    Either way, something is broken.

  • How can I get firefox-9.0b6.tar.bz2 to install in Linux Mint 10 Julia?

When I try to open/load the downloaded new version: firefox-9.0b6.tar.bz2 with the default Archive Manager in Linux Mint 10 Julia I get this error message:
"bzip2: Compressed file ends unexpectedly; perhaps it is corrupted? *Possible* reason follows. bzip2: Inappropriate ioctl for device Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout) It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted. You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files. You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files. tar: Unexpected EOF in archive tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now"
Perhaps it is also of note that I am running Linux from a thumbdrive through the USB port on my Asus EeePC.
=== What do I do so I can get firefox to work? This began because I can't get Adobe flash and gmail to work properly and realize (at least for gmail) I need to upgrade.

  • Flash Player 11 Solaris download .tar.tar

When I attempt to download the current Adobe Flash Player 11 for Solaris, either the SPARC or the x86 version, I get a file that ends in .tar.tar which is unreadable using tar or gunzip or any other form of compression software, including WinZip. What am I supposed to do with a .tar.tar ? Usually is't .tar.bz2 or .tar.gz or .tgz.

That's odd that it's changing the extension from .bz2 to .tar.  I just tried both files (which I downloaded from this page) and they came down as .bz2 which I was able to open without any problems.  Could you try renaming to see if that helps?
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Where is the xsqlservlet_v9****.tar.gz file?

I'm looking to install XSQL Servlet support on Oracle 8.1.7.
I've just downloaded the latest XDK for Java, since technet
states the XSQL Servlet components are included in it. After
uncompressing the download and reviewing the included
    documentation, I expected to find a xsqlserlvet_v9_0_1_0.tar.gz
file included somewhere in the directory structure. Nope, not
    there...so either:
    (1). The included docs are wrong/outdated - I'm looking
at "Downloading and Installing the XSQL Servlet".
(2). My expectation is wrong OR missing an important step.
(3). I've downloaded the wrong file.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Another observation on the release notes included with the
    download...
In reviewing the section "Software Included in the XSQL Servlet
Distribution" of the "Oracle XSQL Pages and the XSQL Servlet"
Release Notes, it mentions the following files:
    .\xsql\lib\xmlparserv2.jar
    .\xsql\lib\xsu12.jar
    .\xsql\lib\classes12.jar
    .\xsql\lib\sax2.jar
I don't see the .\xsql\lib directory structure in what I
    downloaded??? I see xmlparserv2 and xsu12 in the ./lib
directory, but classes12 and sax2 are no where to be found.
I realize I can download classes12 and sax2 from elsewhere, but
I still have this strange feeling that I'm missing something
    here...

  • How to un tar required file?

    Hello All,
I used TAR backup as below.
    tar -cvf test01.tar /uo1/oracle/bin/java
    its created testo1.tar file.
Now i wanted to untar or recovery only one file instaed of whole tar file.
for e.g: i wanted to recovery only file under bin folder callled config.
    how to un tar file?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

You can look inside the tar using the 't' command:
tar tvf file.tar And you can untar only one file with:
    frits@gateway:~/download$ mkdir t
    frits@gateway:~/download$ cd t
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ touch a
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ touch b
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ tar czf ab.tgz *
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ ls
    a  ab.tgz  b
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ tar tzf ab.tgz
    a
    b
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ rm a
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ ls
    ab.tgz  b
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ tar xzf ab.tgz a
    frits@gateway:~/download/t$ ls
    a  ab.tgz  b

  • Recursive scanning of .tar.bz2 archives / Older release notes

This is actually a two part question, but the two parts are somewhat related.  1) Recursive scanning of .tar.bz2 archives  If I create a new content filter to match on executables (attachment-filetype == "Executable") this detects directly attached exe files. It also detects exe files in .zip-archives, and it detects renamed exe files in .zip archives. All is well.  What it does not detect are exe files in .tar.bz2 archives. This surprised me as this is not an especially obscure format, and the Ironport lists tar and bz (along with zip) in the Compressed mime category.  Maybe this is a bug, and it's fixed in a newer release (this is on 6.5.2-101). Which brings me to the next question  2) Older release notes  Where can I find release notes for the releases between 6.5.2-101 and the current release (7.0.1), in order to find if this was fixed along the way?

Not sure about the tar.bz2 archives, but the older release notes can be found on the support portal under Appliance Documentation > Email. There is a small link at the top right corner of the page "earlier releases". Yes, its very well hidden
