Downloading then converting FLAC files to Mac compatible formats

Hi all...
I've been downloading music from archive.org and I always go for the mp3 files for one simple reason: I just don't know how to deal with the FLAC files. I've read dozens of posts here and still don't get it... so I live with the compressed mp3's. When I do try to access the FLAC's they appear in my Safari browser window through the Quicktime plug in. But how do I get them to my hard drive.... and then convert to one of the Mac compatible formats. The latter part seems pretty straightforward with the proper converter. But I can't seem to get my hands on the FLAC's themselves.
So.... 2 questions: getting the FLAC's on board and .... a user friendly converter.
Thanks!

What kind of file is it really?
It's a FLAC file. FLAC is its own format just like mp3 or AAC. I don't know the details of what is going on with iTunes. Fluke is making iTunes do something it wasn't designed to do so it isn't too surprising that iTunes may not be able to identify the files correctly. Likewise, when you tried to open a FLAC file in a browser window that browser application contains a list of applications to try to use to open files of various formats, but that doesn't mean it will always work. I could tell my browser to open Excel spreadsheet files in iTunes, but that doesn't mean iTunes will be able to do that. Since FLAC is an audio format the browser probably is set to toss all audio files at Quicktime in the hopes it can open them. I don't know if FLAC plugins exist for browsers. I use VLC to play individual FLAC files, or COG if I have a bunch (both free). You ccould set up your browser to fire up VLC if you download a FLAC file.

where is button to accept end user agreement so I can download or read online file.  mac osx reader XI
every time i click  on a file to downloac
i get a reader message Before viewing PDF ... you must launch adobe reader and then accept the End User License Agreement. Ive searched  every part of the menu for this and cant fine it

Ok, so the Reader app works. Fine, but why did you say ",the reader won't open any more", that led us a confusing direction.
Ok, the problem is most likely caused because you downloaded Acrobat Pro, which takes over from Reader, then got rid of it. You now have part of Acrobat in Safari, not part of Adobe Reader.
There are two things to try to fix this. The first and easiest is to download and install Adobe Reader again. That should puts its stuff back in Safari with a bit of luck.
Important note for others following this thread. Downloading Adobe Reader is not going to help you if you have not understood and followed the instructions to "launch" Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat). Make sure you understand what "launch" means before downloading anything again.

  • Is there an application to convert VOB files to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Is there an application to convert VOB files to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and if there is how do you convert.

VOB files are video files.  Tiger is an operating system.  Converting video files to Tiger frankly doesn't make sense.  Can I convert a Beethoven symphony into a toothbrush?
What is your actual goal in this?  You can play VOB files with VLC, and there is still a Tiger version of that.  Converting to another format is harder since usually when you are working with VOB files you are doing higher end video editing.
If you goal is to convert commercial DVDs you have ripped, don't bother asking.  Discussing that is against the terms of use of this site since ripping commercial DVDs is illegal in the USA and some other countries.

  • Converting 500GB video to PC-compatible format? OS 10.7.4

    Hello -
I have ~500GB of resources for a short film on a mac-formatted drive. The resources are all in mac-compatible format (.mov; .jpeg & others). Is there any way to transfer these to another drive that is PC-compatible in PC-readable format?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Best,
    Rax

OS X can only read NTFS. To write to an NTFS formatted drive you need to install third party software on your Mac. To avoid that, you can format the drive from the Windows computer as exFAT. OS X can both read and write that format. OS X can also format a drive as exFAT, but there seems to be some kind of incompatibility. Often, Windows users can't access a drive formatted as exFAT on a Mac, but have no problem if the formatting is done from Windows.
If you need the drive to remain NTFS, then you can purchase and install Paragon NTFS for Mac, or Tuxera for Mac. There used to be a paid and free version of Tuxera, but I don't think there's a free version anymore.
As far as the "incompatibility" issue, that's likely on the Windows side. By default, Windows XP does not support exFAT. You need to download and install an extension from Microsoft so XP can read/write/format that type of drive. So Windows users who say they can't read an exFAT drive are most likely on XP. So if you know the drive is going to an Win XP system, make sure they have this extension installed.

    Thank you

So it seems from reading the COMMAND manual that my first issue is that I used a 16GB SD card, and the manual says it will only recogize up to a 2GB SD card. I did use my MB Air's SD card slot and crated a folder and dragged the music files to it, then to the card. So I am going to get a 2GB card and try that next. Otherwise just stick with the iPOD connected. At least that is 8GB

  • Opening an .rar file and converting flac files

I am not sure this belongs in this topic area but since iTunes is the ultimate destination of this file I posted here.
I have a .rar file. It is a compressed file when unzipped will have FLAC audio files in the folder. I need to know how I unzip the .rar file and then how to convert the FLAC file to AIFF or ALAC for use in iTunes.

OK, you have 2 jobs ahead of you.
First you need to uncompress the RAR archive. Find a tool that will do this on the Mac. Although I have not personally used it, UnRARx would be a possibility.
When it is unpacked, you will see a folder containing the FLAC files. FLAC is the number one format for lossless audio, but iTunes is unable to handle it. So, use a conversion tool such as Switch for the Mac, and convert the files to AIFF, ALAC, or AAC. Add the converted files to your iTunes library.
Then unless you need them for some non-iTunes purpose, you can discard the RAR archive and the FLACs.

In this case the shoe is firmly on the other foot, the Mac has an embarrassment of riches in terms of free tools to convert to/from FLAC and Apple Lossless, these include XLD, xAct, Max, and more.
On the Windows side, I would agree with the recommendation to use WinAmp to convert from FLAC to WAV, and then use iTunes to convert from WAV to Apple Lossless. Unfortunately you are likely to need to re-tag the tracks since WAV effectively does not support meta-tags.
The above is a completely free solution. Another approach which should be easier and more efficient is to use dbPowerAmp and addons. However while you can use the trial version, it strictly speaking is a commercial application. See this page for a good summary http://hddaudio.net/?p=343
PS. You could always get a Mac

  • Converting these files for Mac

Hello, I am having alot of difficulty getting these .AVI files to run on my Macintosh. The files play the correct duration, but there's a different problem with each that doesn't allow it to work. For the first file, there's no audio at all (my speakers work fine), and the picture is entirely black. I tried using DivX Doctor II but all it fixed was the audio. The video is still not appearing at all. I tried using DivX Converter (which took a long while), and the only change was that the picture now is all white rather than black. I wanted to burn this file to a DVD, but putting it in Toast Titanium didn't change it either. I've been looking all over the internet and have downloaded stuff hoping it would help and I have no luck (Flip4Mac, for example, did nothing at all). Quicktime tells me there may be something about this file that requires a codec I don't have, so it takes me to their page, but I didn't see anything there either. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
More information about the first file:
Format: WMV3, 640 x 480 pixels size, Millions (of colors I assume), MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48,000 kHz
    FPS: 24.04
    Playing FPS: (Available while playing)
    Data Size: 290.64 MB
    Data Rate: 1785.75 kbits/sec
One difference I've noticed in AVI files I can play is that the Format is DivX 5.0 rather than WMV3. This apparently has something to do with me not being able to view these on the Mac. With my PC, with VLC player especially, they run fine. But they don't work on my Mac, even with the Mac version of VLC, and even so I don't see how it'd help with getting Toast to see it. All I can see to do is convert these files. I posted about this on a different forum and was told they can only be converted on a PC. But I have no idea what to use to convert them. Here's the information on the other two files:
    Second file:
Video, but no audio at all
    Format: Generic MPEG-4, 704 x 400, Millions
    'ms ', Stereo, 48.000 kHz
    FPS: 23.98
    Playing FPS: (Available while playing)
    Data Size: 919.70 MB
    Data Rate: 1765.84 kbits/sec
    Third file:
No video, and the audio glitches constantly.
    Format: MP42, 640 x 360, Millions
MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 23.98
    Playing FPS: (Available while playing)
    Data Size: 183.64 MB
    Data Rate: 3925.53 kbits/sec
If anyone can tell me how to convert these, whether it be on a Mac or a PC, I'd be very grateful. I really need these to work on a Mac, preferably on the Toast Titanium program, so I can make DVDs out of them. I'm really at a loss. Thanks.

VLC for Mac? For the first, it says "An error has occured which has probably prevented the execution of your request: main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'. VLC probably does not support this sound or video format."
For the second, it says "An error has occured which has probably prevented the execution of your request: ffmpeg: more than 5 seconds of late video -> dropping frame (computer too slow ?)"
VLC will play the third, but I still can't get Toast Titanium to see it.

  • Converting .MOV files (pre snowleopard) to format suitable for iDVD

I purchased a new iMac and migrated my system across (from iMac5 (2.16 GHz) Mac OS 10.4.11 Quicktime 7.6.4 to a new imac 3.06 Mac OS 10.6.2 Quicktime 10.0).
Some of my quicktime files play ok but others prompt me to download quicktime version 7. I really want to convert them to a format that iDVD finds acceptable.
Any converters I have tried fail to read the files.
Is there any s/w available to convert these files to formats suitable for iDVD ?

I really want to convert them to a format that iDVD finds acceptable.
iDVD will support any "conversion" compatible compression format supported by your current QT component configuration. Therefore, what you need to do is find out what compression format(s) are contained in the files that no longer play/are not being accepted by iDVD (or other QT apps).
Any converters I have tried fail to read the files.
If the converters rely on your installed QT components, that is to be expected. If such apps include there own built-in codecs, then the files are either not supported or possibly corrupted.
Is there any s/w available to convert these files to formats suitable for iDVD ?
I would normally recommend QT 7 Pro ($30) or MPEG Streamclip (free) to perform the conversions. However, if your files contain content not supported by your current QT component configuration, then the files cannot be converted until the specific required components are installed. (E.g., Filp4Mac ($) for windows, Perian (free) for DivX, XviD, and similar files, the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($) for MPEG-2 video content, etc.) To learn which codecs are missing, you might try opening the Finder "Info" window for the file or see if the free VLC app will load/play/info the file content.
Contrary to what many people think, there are many video compression formats (technologies) used and no single player plays everything without having the correct component support available. This is like trying to play a DVD on a CD player, or playing and Blu-ray on a DVD player.

  • I can't Convert midi files into any other format

A few months ago, I was able to convert midi files into mp3 when one day, I updated iTunes using software update. Ever since the updates I had for my Mac it still hasn't work.
It has this error that won't allow me to convert. I talked to my friend wrldwzrd89 who is one of my friends and he said that it is because Apple had a piece of data missing allowing midis to be converted to mp3, or any other format.
Is this true or do you know the solution?

I can't tell you the exact reason why it doesn't work, but there is an article about this problem and a solution if you have QuickTime Pro:
iTunes: MIDI files cannot be converted in iTunes 6.0.3 and 6.0.4
Not the last sentence in the article. That usually means they're working on a fix.
No guarantee that it will be fixed in the next version however. We'll have to wait and see.
    Hope this helps.

    1. can you upate older dreamweaver pages into the new dreamweaver application? (im referring to in the fluid grid part, where it shows both tablet, phone and desktop? ) like how to convert the files.
2,how to convert htlml to htlml 5? just wondering on it.
    3. this is a web site i am useing right now. its under wix.com.  the site is what i am currently using as saying here this is what i am doing. etc. wi was froce to use it for when i took exit portofoilo. so i am stuck with it untill i get my other pages up and running. http://brian-ford.wix.com/photographerexplorer  (  temparry site)

    EASY isn't always better.
Below is an example of a FluidGrid Layout with a jQuery Cycle2 slide rotation (in this case text only) but it can be used for anything you wish.
    http://alt-web.com/FluidGrid/Fluid1.html
Below is an example of a semi-liquid layout with Fancybox2 Image Viewer:

View source in browser to see the code.
I don't like Lightroom galleries for the web. In CS6, you can only output Lightroom galleries to PDF (print) or Video.
There must be a hundred or more jQuery gallery plugins available on the web.  Do a Google search.  And stay away from anything containing Flash as it isn't supported by the world's most popular web devices (iPhone, iPad, Android...)
