Downloading tiger or lepord to an imac G4 lacking a DVD drive

My G4 iMac 700 MHz with upgraded ram has OSX 10.3.9. I tried to download 10.4 or later and cannot because a DVD (mine came with CD Drive) is required and the External DVD's I can find require 10.4 to use. I have the capacity just don't know how to download Tiger or Leopard. Any thoughts.

Of course, the presumption that access to another Mac exists, is my presumption; not yours

It's a bit iffy, though; in some cases, people have reported that running the Mac OS X install from a different model of Mac has caused erroneous installation of some components. Having a DVD drive for his iMac will be the most reliable.
Agreed. But the option is there if other options aren't available.

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • New imac doesnt have a dvd drive, how do i ...?

so, since the new imac doesnt have a dvd drive what is an alternative way to watch mymovvies and download cd's ? i think apple messed up removing the dvd drive and people that have/will buy thew imac deserve a refund or something to connect to the imac that reads discs or something.

If you bought an AV on DVD, then it's you who failed to buy the correct product.  You can buy lots of different AVs through download.
If you needed a computer with a built in DVD drive, then it's you who failed to buy the correct product for your needs, if you weren't willing to buy the seperate DVD drive.
Keep in mind, you also never payed for a DVD drive in the first place, since the computer's price would have been adjusted accordingly.  So you don't get something for free that you never payed for in the first place.

  • Am I correct that none of the latest iMac's have a DVD Drive or Firewire port?

Am I correct that none of the latest iMac's have a DVD Drive or Firewire port?

I actually use an external optical drive as all of my family and friends (including the ones in other countries) prefer to get the movies I produce on a DVD they can put in their DVD player and watch on a big screen TV, so I will be using that technology for some time to come. I also prefer not to upload anything as most everyone thinks everything is free to download (steal) other people's content. I've used an external burner for years because the super slim vertically installed drives in iMacs were less than reliable and any media could shift by 1/100th of an inch.
My current (new) external burner is from OWC:

(they have others, including bluray). Mine is quiet, sturdy, and offers several plugin possibilities.

  • How do I install Tiger on a G3 iMAC from an external DVD drive?

I want to install Tiger on my PPC G3 iMAC. It is 500MHZ with 512 MB Ram, running 10.3.9. It has a CD drive, but CD version of Tiger is no longer available. I purchased a retail version of Tiger, and, on the advice of the Apple Store personnel, purchased an external DVD drive. It is a USB Lacie drive. My iMAC sees the DVD, but when I click the Install icon, it has a Restart button. Clicking the button restarts for 10.3.9. Same thing happens when I use the "C" key. When I try to assign the DVD drive as the startup drive, it says "ding" and won't assign it. What can I do next?

Take the DVD drive back and exchange it for a Firewire model. You cannot boot the iMac from a USB drive. This is basic information your Apple store personnel should know unless you failed to tell them what Mac model you have.

  • How can I set up a Canon printer on iMac with cd? (iMac has no cd/dvd drive?)

Purchased the latest iMac with no dvd drive; also purchased a Canon printer with dvd set-up; how can I install printer on iMac?

Macs do not usually need to download anything from the CDs that come w/printers.  Read the user manual that came w/the printer and/or contact Canon Support.
Or purchase an external burner.  Do not purchase Apple's usb burner.  3rd party burners are 110% better.

  • Trying to wipe the hard drive on a G5 iMac, using an external DVD drive as the one in the iMac is broken.

I'm trying to boot up with the OS (or install) disk, from an external DVD drive as the one in the iMac is broken. When the computer boots up, my normal desktop appears, but also the Mac OSX (Tiger) install disk. When I double-click on the "Install Mac OSX" icon, a screen comes up that says: "Click the button below to restart & begin the install process". The iMac restarts, but just goes back to where it was, & I'm prompted to:  "Click the button below to restart & begin the install process".
So far there is no way to "begin the install process", I just keep going around in circles with this. I'm doing this so I can sell the computer. I hope I've made it clear, and TIA for any advice.

I looked at the disk utility erase option.  The wording looked a little vague.  Seemed to me to erase all the disk  including the data if you pick one pass, but I am not sure.
but that is contradicted when you see you have to pick the correct option.

  • Cant install spore from USB backup disk on new IMACS that have no DVD drive.

I am trying to test Spore on my father's new Imac but it will not let me install.
I copied the whole DVD content on a portable USB drive and I can install it fine from there via my own MAC but from my father's new IMAC 2012 that has no DVD drive I am greeted by the error.
"could not verify the integrity of the installer"
    any ideas why?

Actually I resolved the issue. My system is 10.7 not Mountain Lion.
I resolved the issue by moving all the content to the root of the portable drive: they were in a subfolder called SPORE which caused the installation to be unrecognizable.
    Thanks for helping !

  • IMac cannot read any DVD drives - internal or external

    Hi,
My iMac began exhibiting problems about 12 months ago when it wouldn't load CD's properly to iTunes - it would do some songs and not others. It also stopped reading an external drive I bought. I bought another external DVD drive from an apple store - no luck. This iMac of mine refuses to deal with any external media.
Has anyone had the same problem - can anyone help.
I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard BTW - won't read the media
    Thanks and regards,
    Jon

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions...
From your Finder menu bar click Finder / Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: *External disks* is selected.
If that box was already, checked try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Tiger User files to new iMac via enet or backup drive?

I'm completely new to Leopard. My new (refurb) iMac 2.66 from Apple is bundled with SL. All I want from the old Powerbook/Tiger User files are iTunes library files, images folders in Pictures and Docs. No need for needwork settings, will be going to new config./provider. No iMovie or iPhoto libraries needed.
My Tiger Powerbook is backed up on an external USB 2.0 drive.
Can't I just copy from the PB to the new desktop via Ethernet and add to the new OS User folders, and import iTunes library from the new machine for iTunes?
I can re-install Office 2008. Or should I use SL Migration Assistant or back-up software?
Any issues to consider? Feedback or a relevent thread would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

So I can discriminate which of my user files/folders to move with MA?
Yes, there will be some flexibility in what you want to move over.
I only need the noted files. I'll be using a different account on the new machine. I know how to set up a new account in Tiger, delete the old one, etc. I assume it's similar in SL. I just don't want a lot of orphan files from the old config., which is why I thought of just setting up the new machine, and using the back-up software or copying to the desktop.
Actually MA would be best rather than copying to the desktop as it handles the file permissions for. Just copying files over manually can end in headaches permissions-wise. That is why it might be best to allow MA to migrate over all or part of your old user account. Then you could maintain the same username and password and the Mac OS would recognize these files/folders as belong to you and not some other user account.
I have had upwards of 6 different Macs since the release of Mac OS X. And I have migrated over the very same user account from one to the other with each new Mac that I upgraded to without issue.
I'll be wiping the drive and re-installing the OS from the install disc without all the excess fonts, foreign language translators, drivers, demos, etc before I do anything else.
    That works for me.

  • Could I use iBook to upgrade iMac with dead CD/DVD drive?

I don't speak computer very well.......I was wondering if I could upgrade my old iMac by using the iBook as an external Hard drive. I tried using a firewire connection and holding down the T key. It worked for file transfer, but not upgrading the OS. Is it possible? I have the Tiger disc in the iBook.

    Yes, it should work.
You need the iMac to be the Target Disk in FireWire Target Disk Mode. This means holding down the T key on the iMac. Then start the Installation from the Tiger disc, selecting the iMac's hard drive (on the iBook's Desktop) as the drive for the installation.
If it is the Graphite iMac you are upgrading, be sure that the firmware is up-to-date.
