Downloading wmv videos

after downloading videos in the wmv format the "save as" in the safari menu is dimmed, so i can't save the videos. the downloads folder is empty, but the video must be somewhere in my computer because i can play it. but when i close safari it's gone. i don't have this problem with .avi or .flv videos. any suggestions?

Roger -- I thought you had the answer to my problem... but I'm still fighting it.... I have a 199M mp4 file that I can "download" and play but it will not show in downloads and I have not found a way to save it on my Mac Intel Based. I did download and install your suggested file shown in your 11/20 post.
I can download the file on my dell system and play it in quick time... but no luck (so far) on the Mac.
Thank you
Jim

Hi, when I download wmv files on my MacBook Air I cannot get any sound on the videos. Youtube videos work fine but not wmv files. Can anybody help please?

Install Flip4Mac which allows you to play wmv files.

  • IMovie will not load avi/wmv videos, leaves sound out of mpg/mpeg videos

When i load mpg and mpeg videos into iMovie, the videos come out fine, but leave the sound out for some reason. There is no sound clip that is loaded with it. And when it comes to loading "avi" videos, it loads them, but they are blank. It loads a black video clip with no sound. And when it comes to downloading "wmv" videos it stops and says there was an error. This is the message it sends me. "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Volumes/Maxtor Extra Storage/WTC VIDEOS/WMV/911.wtc.2.no.base.smoke.wmv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048".
If you know anything about this, have an answer, or even a suggestion, I would greatly appreciate a response from you. My computer model is a Mac OSX 10.0 and I currently have iLife 06 with iMovie HD. Thanks a lot.

    Hello Mike,
MPEG video has muxed audio streams, which iMovie doesn't like - you'll have to convert.
Find some more info in Dan Slagle's Unofficial iMovie FAQ:
    1. Can't hear audio in iMovie when I import an MPEG clip
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6030.shtml
    2. Using Mpeg (DVD) footage

and also on Matti Haveri's website: How can I edit MPEG or convert DVD or MPEG to DV
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convertMPEG
    Tools:
    MPEG StreamClip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
AVI is a container (like Quicktime's .mov) and contain various codecs. In order to know how to convert, you'll need to find out what exact codec has been used. A possibility is that it's one of the numerous DivX codecs.
FFmpegX converts various AVI and DivX file types:

WMV files can be played with Flip4Mac, in order to convert them you'll need to get the $$ pro-version ....

    hope this helps

  • Incompatible web sites, playing wmv video on mac

I am an expert pc user switching to mac...
I realized when I made the switch that they would be software that worked with PC that would not work with MAC. What has really surprised me, is there seems to be many web sites that will not work with MAC and its browsers.
This started with a conversation with apple support, where they indicated there were incompatible web sites.
My business bank stops you cold and says you have to use IE; you can ignore it and move on and it seems to work ok.
The Walgreen pharmacy web site has a drug cost calculator that also says you must use IE, and you cannot move on.
What really concerns me are the ones that give you no warning, but just don't work. If you go to
    http://www.dotnetnuke.com/default.aspx?tabid=777
under the title of Video introduction:
Mac Firefox - nothing displays for the video player
Mac Safari - the video player displays, but the video will not play.
PC IE - everything works as expected.
The video format is wmv, which is an industry standard. I installed flip4mac, which is supposed to allow you to view wmv in quicktime, but it did work. Even after downloading the video (a link), I could not watch in on the mac. I had to go to a PC.
This type of silliness is exactly why I am running from a PC. Now I am finding it prevalent on the mac.
Question 1) specific to the wmv file format, how do you get it to run on mac?
Question 2) is this just the way it is? You cannot depend on web applications working at all with mac?
    thanks!
    bob

    Hi Bob,
    Ok, I'll bite
Apple has to understand that we don't care about who is at fault for web sites not working with Mac
The WebKit team are more than aware of that fact, and where possible they work with popular websites to get them to correct their websites or add specific 'kludges' into the WebKit code to specifically support these sites.
Apple has the ability to have an IE mode in safari to handle these situations, but hey choose not to
I've not heard that before. Can you quote a source?
If it takes IE compatibility mode to handle all web sites, then just do it.
That of course costs money. And then there's the prospect of Apple having to license Microsoft's DRM solution to provide 100% compatibility with Windows Media files. As we all know, Apple like good P.R. as much as the next company and handing something like that to Microsoft is never going to happen.
Microsoft clearly won't provide updated WMP technology for OS X as it gives them nothing, other than the extra impetus for people to switch away from Windows.
So we're stuck with essentially badgering the broken sites to fix things, or going somewhere else (and spending our $$$ there if needed).
The bar for a college student is much lower
True, but today's college student is tomorrow's business person and Apple products are very popular with college students these days. Apple are in this for the long term. Things will change, but we have to live in the real world and know this isn't going to happen soon.
The truth of the matter is that the sooner Microsoft get on board with being a responsible web-citizen then the better it will be for everyone (and by everyone I don't just mean Apple users, but anyone connected to the internet).
Almost [1 in 3 browsers on the web are not Internet Explorer|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usageshare_of_webbrowsers] - that's a huge number and businesses on the web need to be aware of this.
Please please please do not get me wrong - I would love it if Safari (or Firefox, or Opera, or Chrome, or ...) could handle every site that IE does but it's never, ever going to happen.
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • Top clipped when I import a wmv video.  Please Help.

When I import a wmv video into premier elements 9 the top part of the video is clipped.  The video plays fine externally with windows player, and plays in premier but the top is clipped.  This happens for any video I try to import.  The video properties are as follows...798 w x 480 h, 25 frames/sec, 1858 kbps.  I definitely need help with this one, as I cannot even start a project.

In case you are missing the Announcement, it should display
Announcement: Windows Update Causes Display to Be Blacked Out
    Hide Details
MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057.  Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files.  Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.
Also, see this Adobe KB Article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/wmv-files-corrupted-import-or.h tml
There have been many, many threads on the subject..lots of helpful hints on the matter of deleting the offending Windows Update kb. Major points that were offered include:
    a. for the present, set your Windows Updates so that you require notification for any downloading and installing of them.
    b. if you catch the offending Windows Update kb in Windows Updates Important Updates, then right click that kb and select Hide...that is supposed to block it from further activity.

  • I can't open a wmv. video sent to me via email.  I can on my laptop, but not my new ipad

Why can't I open a wmv. video sent in an email?

WMV or Windows Media Video is not a natively supported video format on an iPad.
You need to download an App that can play that video format.

  • Downloading WMV without paying Microsoft for Flip 4 Mac Pro

I am trying desperately to view portions of a several-hour city council meeting that's only supplied in WMV, but I have to pay Microsoft $49 for Flip4Mac viewer pro if I want to skip the streaming and just download the video.
Is there any way (hack) to bypass this? (the city's streaming window won't allow any fast forward or skipping ahead !!!!!!!!!!
    Please help.

I don't see why you'd need any of the paid versions of the Flip4Mac codecs to view or download any WMV content. The paid versions give you the ability to import WMV video into QuickTime for conversion to another format such as h.264 (the $29 version) and export a QT movie as WMV (the $49 version). I don't see anything regarding any ability to download a WMV, though it's possible that I've missed something.
Can you post a URL to the video? If it is a true stream, then downloading isn't possible since the video is never completely on your system at any one time. With a true stream, only with a screen capture utility could you get the entire video onto your system. But if you can post the URL, we can take a look and see what options you might have.
    Regards.

  • Director and WMV video

I have been searching for a reason why I am unable to get WMV
video files to work in Director. I am using Director MX 9.0. I saw
a post on a forum saying that one should have a newer version of
DirectX and I have downloaded that and installed it but I am still
unable to import the WMV file...or should I say that it imports
under ALL FILES but I see no option for WMV and when I get it into
direct it just shows as place saver, it wont play on the stage. Can
anyone possibly aid me in finding out why I cant get WMV files
working? This is for a work assignment and I am being held up
    because of this...thanks in advance.

I believe that the 1st version to support WMV files is MX
    2004 (version
10), so you would need a new version of Director in order to
    play those
files. You can still use Quicktime (and I think Real, but I'm
    not sure
    about that).

  • Downloaded a video but cannot play it wvm is file

I just downloaded a video from drop box with a file path of wvm - cannot play it on my macbook pro - is there a way to do this?  I understand the file is for windows media player?

    .wmv not .wvm
Install Flip4Mac to allwy you to play .wmv's with quicktime.
While you are at it also install Perian.   It's not for .wmv's but adds codec support for a wide verity of video formats that quicktime wouldn't normally handle.
Finally, you could just use vlc which is a much more general and powerful video player.

  • Downloading Vimeo video

I have permission and password to download a video from Vimeo but see message that "it could not be saved because source file could not be read".
Can someone please guide me through this?

I'd already downloaded the Vimeo downloader for Mac as you suggested, and I downloaded the video again today and after completion I couldn't open it.
    Here's the message:
The document “86218895mystele4.wmv” could not be opened. The movie's file format isn't recognized.
    Can you please help?

After upgrading OS 3.1.3 to iOS4, My iPod Touch (2nd Generation) can no longer download such video podcasts as NBC News, CBS News, ABC News and Cranky Geeks from iTunes store. The moment the download starts, there is always an annoying prompt "this video cannot be played on this iPod".
    It's really frustrating!!!

  • ITunes 6.0.1.3 downloads a video 100%, then fails with "An Unknown Error"

I've downloaded several videos from ITMS but the most recent one I've purchased will complete the download process and then fail. I've tried "check for purchases" several times and always get the same result - download the ~200 MB file, then fail when the progress bar is full.
I've tried disabling Grisoft AntiVirus, defragmenting the hard drive, chkdsk for errors (no errors), but I keep getting the same thing every time - about 8 tries):
    [Red X graphic]
There was an error downloading your purchased music.
    An unknown error occurred (0xFFFE7958).
Use the Check for Purchased Music command in the Advanced menu to try again later.
    [OK]
I don't use iTunes for music - just for video downloads.
    Any ideas?

    Same problem here!!!
Three times I tried to download the D.Housewives and three times it failed. I did the check the purchased and was able to start again but everytime it got to either 99% or 100% it failed with a error but on the third time it failed I guess it triggered something and it no longer shows as Purchased Music. I contacted Apple and they told me I am out of luck!
Good thing my Ipod is less then 30 days old as it is going back to the store.
Here is their response after taking my $1.99 but no delivering the product!!!

When I connect the RCA Small Wonder to my MacBook Pro, the device is recognized in finder as EZ201.  I tried to copy the video files in the folder but within a minute or two, I receive a message that the disk was ejected improperly, even though the device is still connected.  I was able to download the first few videos before it stopped working and was able to play them using Perian.  However, when I tried to connect the device again, it froze my system and I had to force a shut down by turning the computer off. Why is the device initially recongized but then shows as improperly ejected when it is still connected? How can I download the videos if the MacBook Pro won't allow the device to stay connected?

A picture of a screen that suggests my new MBP Retina never connects to the "Macbook Pro backup ("StefanTimeCapsule")
This is the one that has the files for the backups procured by the Time Machine program. But it can't "connect"-- You 'll see int he sideways pic (sorry!) that the options STILL says "connecting"
Do i have to make these Time Machines more open to connection?

I have download helper. No, this reply is not helpful. It simply generates this little gem:
"This service requires the conversion feature to be enabled.

And the same clicking on buttons that makes nothing happen and going around in circles with the escape key.
