Downloads folder icons problem

Hello
I´m a Imac newbie, and i´m having a problem with the downloads folder.
Now the icons instead of a images it showns as a square enclosed by a dotted line
Any suggestios?
Thank you

I think the problem is solved
When I delete the files from the downloads folder...  the problem is not solved.
Later when I wanted to delete files permanently from the trash, a message appeared:
"X file can not be deleted because it is being used"
(it was a big size file about 2gb)
When I finally unlock the file and delete it from the trash, the icons were recovering their pictures in all affected folders
Somehow it seems that the file interfered with the icons
I hope it does not happen again
Thanks to all

  • Download Folder Icon

Recently, the icon, fan, grid, or any view setting for checking my download folder on the dock has stopped updating any changes made to it. If I delete a file from the Downloads folder, the icon or any view on the dock will still show the file listed as if it had not been deleted.

    Not a problem.
    1. Folder creation
Open your user home folder in Finder and from the 'File' menu, select 'New Folder', and name it 'Downloads'. Press return for it to register.
    2. Folder icon restoration
Now, with Finder as the active application, click on the 'Go' menu and select the 'Go to Folder...' menu item. In the window which appears, copy and paste the following line (no line breaks) and hit return.
          /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/
In the location which appears, double click on the file named DownloadsFolder.icns, which will open it in Preview. In Preview, type cmd+c to copy the image. Now, go back to your home folder and highlight the 'Downloads' folder which you created. Type cmd+i to bring up the info panel. Click once on the generic folder icon near the top of the panel to highlight it. Now type cmd+v to paste the copied image. It should now look like the original Downloads folder.
    3. Setting proper permissions
Open a Terminal window (/Applications/Utilities/) and enter the following sequence of command lines..
          cd ~
          chmod go-rx Downloads
          exit
    .. and then quit Terminal.
    Concluding remarks
And you're done. I'm not entirely sure if the recreated folder will function without issues. But as far as I can tell, for all intents and purposes, it shouldn't be any different from the original folder.

  • Restore "Download" folder icon

    Hi,
I moved my Download folder to another partition and created a sym link in my HOME dir to that location.
The problem is that now in Finder, I see the Download folder with a "link" icon. Is there a way of restoring the previous icon ?
I tried dragging the icns file from
    System ▸ Library ▸ CoreServices ▸ CoreTypes.bundle ▸ (control-click) Show Package Contents ▸ Contents ▸ Resources
to the icon which is shown when I open the Info of the folder but instead os seing the original icon, I see a white icon with ".icns" written on it.
    Thanks,
    Tex

    No it doesn't work.
I Googled and found this page http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=83832
So there is a info.plist file which says which maps icons to elements placed in the Finder's sidebar (/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents )
    <dict>
    <key>CFBundleTypeIconFile</key>
    <string>ToolbarDownloadsFolderIcon.icns</string>
    <key>CFBundleTypeName</key>
    <string>Toolbar Downloads Folder</string>
    <key>CFBundleTypeOSTypes</key>
    <array>
    <string>tDwn</string>
    </array>
    <key>CFBundleTypeRole</key>
    <string>None</string>
    <key>LSTypeIsPackage</key>
    <false/>
    <key>NSPersistentStoreTypeKey</key>
    <string>Binary</string>
    </dict>
I think what my system is now missing is the
    <string>Toolbar Downloads Folder</string>
and doesn't know what is my Download folder.

  • How can i make my Downloads folder icon in Dock bounce again?

I accidentally removed my downloads folder from the Dock and when I added it back onto the Dock, it would not bounce when i downloaded something.
Before I removed it from the dock, it would always bounce whenever i download something and the thing i downloaded would appear on the icon. How can I get this setting again?

Note if you don't have any folders on your Dock, note the trashcan is on one side of the dock with a divider between it and applications.  Minimized windows (with the yellow button on the upper left corner) will go between the trash and that divider.  You can drag folders into the section between the minimized windows and the trash.

  • Anyone know how to get the downloads folder icon to appear in the dock?

I accidentally dragged the downloads icon out of the dock and I can't figure out how to get it back there. Any suggestions? thanks!

Sometimes you have to be a bit "forceful" with your drag, especially if the Dock is at the bottom--almost as if you are dragging the folder thru the Dock and off the bottom edge of the monitor.

  • Another folder icon problem! :(

sorry about the repetitiveness of the subject but i have actually looked everywhere i could for an answer to my problem and, guess what, no luck!
obviously its to do with that darn folder with the ! in it...it started a couple of weeks ago when i was jus listening to my ipod (as you do!) and it started skipping songs. suddenly once every 3 seconds it would skip to the next song without playing anything. so i done that reset thing to stop it and when i turned it back on that folder thingy appeared and turned itself off. i went onto the designated address and restored it etc and it worked fine, after i had to put all my songs on it again!
then about a week later it did the exact same thing but now when i go to restore it the computer wont recognise it and when it does it slows the computer right down. one time i could restore it but it said "firmware error, unable to restore" or summut like that.
im really missing my tunes and want my ipod back to how it was! any help on the subject about what to do would be of great help
PS im on an Ipod 20gb photo if thats any difference. and dont point me in the directin of "the 3 r's" i already tried that lol!
    thanks again!!

    Yes. but it won't work.
It is as if this icon is invisible and non-existent for the computer. It is inactive, because the cursor won't "see" it, the clicks won't "see" it. It is the ghost (as I name it) of the dragging. The dragging was complete, but the icon is left behind, only as an inactive image. For all other purposes it is invisible and inactive. It is just stuck on my screen.

  • Folder Icon, Tried Apple Solutions to no avail

I've got the folder icon with an exclamation point problem on my 40G click-wheel iPod. It lies dormant until I press a button, then it shows the apple icon for a bit then gives me the folder icon w/ !. A few seconds later, the iPod turns off. The whole time it is on I can hear the hard drive revving up and then back down.
I checked the support page from apple for this problem and they recommended letting it charge, which I did for a long time, same issue. I can confirm that the battery is charged by forcing the Pod into disk mode, where I can see the fully charged battery icon.
The apple support page also recommends restoring the iPod and reformatting the iPod. I can do neither of these, even if I force it into disk mode. Once it is in disk mode, I plug it into my computer and the Do Not Disconnect logo appears for a bit (10-20 seconds) as windows sorts things out. Finally, the iPod appears in My Computer very briefly, and the iPod turns off for a second then reappears with the apple logo thus removing it from My Computer. I've loaded it up in a similar fashion after having opened the iPod Updater program, and I get the same problem, except with a "Can't Mount iPod" error. The same thing occurs with both firewire and USB2, in more than one port of each. I also saw to try disabling USB2 in device manager and try to restore/format through USB1.1, but this fails in the same way, computer sees the iPod for a second, then it turns off.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Jon
P.S. I've been scouring the forums lately looking for a solution to this problem, and it appears to be a stressful time for all of you who are trying to help us out. This combined with the fact that some people are giving some mean replies to these helpful souls has to be rather irritating. But please take solace in the fact that there are plenty of people out there who are extremely grateful (myself included) for all the problems in the past and future that you have and will solve. Keep up the good work.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Patsy.
In the future please post your own thread even if you appear to be having an identical problem -- it isn't an issue here (since the original poster is sending his off for repair) but in other cases it may make it impossible for us to help you or them which is why it is against the forum rules.
    Here's Otto's advice:
Key to solving all ! folder icon problems: Forced Disk Mode.
3G iPods: Hold RW and FF down as it boots up the Apple Logo. It should go directly to the screen with a big checkmark that says "OK to disconnect". Connecting it now should work.
4G iPods: Same thing, except hold down Play and Select while it boots.
Forced Disk Mode basically bypasses all the iPod software and puts it right into disk mode to talk to the PC. If you can't get it to connect to the PC in this mode, then either the iPod needs replacement, or the PC is badly broken.
To get out of Forced Disk Mode, first eject or otherwise disconnect the iPod from the PC. It needs to be showing the checkmark again.
3G: Hold Menu and Play for like 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
4G: Hold Menu and Select for like 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Fixing 100% of all fixable iPod problems can be done as follows:
    1. Forced Disk Mode.
    2. On the PC, kill the iPodService.exe, iTunes.exe, and iTunesHelper.exe.
    3. Connect the iPod. Wait for it to show up as a drive letter.
    4. Format the iPod Drive as a FAT32 drive using the normal formatting methods. Do NOT do a quick format.
    5. Start up the iPod Software Updater program. Restore the iPod.
    6. When the iPod goes back to the check mark screen, reset the iPod manually.

  • When I try to download a software up date for another program in Binary File (eg CCleaner or a Microsoft file) in FireFox they all just come up in the download window as 'Cancelled'? When I go to the destination folder the download file icon is there wit

When I try to download a software up date for another program in Binary File (eg. C Cleaner or a Microsoft file) in Firefox they all just come up in the download window as 'Canceled'? When I go to the destination folder the download file icon is there with 0 Kb's for size...Then when I click 'RETRY' the download it appears to download fully, but when I go into the destination folder the downloaded file is not there? I need to know if there is something in the Firefox options to resolve this problem or much more!!

If all .exe files are blocked, antivirus software is most likely configured to block them. See if you can download these with your antivirus and/or security software disabled.

  • Folder icon with exclamation point...and updater problems

So here's what has happened to me today:
I plugged my iPod into my computer(this is a computer WITHOUT iPod installed yet) to charge. In the meantime, I downloaded the latest iPod updater and iTunes. The first time I used the updater, it told me that there was an iPod service error. I followed some instructions on the apple support site..and The next time I tried, it told me that one or more applications were using the iPod. I knew this wasn't the case, because the only application open was the updater, and no antivirus software was currently running. So I took my iPod back to my laptop computer(DOES have iPod installed) and it also told me that one or more applications were using the iPod, even though there were no applications open.
So now I have a little folder with an exclamation point that tells me to go to the apple support site, which I have been to numerous times...I can put my iPod into disk mode which really doesn't help anyways...

    Then
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • When I try to move my downloaded Firefox icon into my Applications folder I end up with its alias. Why?

I followed directions for getting Firefox free on my MacBook Pro (OS X.5.8). A downloaded Firefox icon appeared on my desktop. But when I try to move it into my Applications folder I get an alias there not the original downloaded icon. What should I do?

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

Downloading a file would normally bring up an option to open the file with the appropriate program or save it - for some reason now it just downloads straight to the download folder. Why? Problem with Firefox or something else? It's very frustrating - sometimes you want the file opened first so it can be discarded or saved to a different location.

Hey. that's great! Thanks for posting back with the outcome.

  • I am having a difficult time downloading HD movies from iTunes. I tried on both my imac and new macbook pro but 95% of the time I get error 8008 (corruption). I can stream HD content from Netflix and hulu w/o problems. I also empty my download folder.

After it started happening on my imac I tried to download on my ne macbook pro but the same thing is happening. I can stream without any ral noticiable problems from my icloud library, Netflix, and Hulu but when I try to download so I can back them up I get the 8008 error code. I have contacted spple support and am still waitin on an answer. Sometimes the error will happen towards the beginning and other times when it is almost downloaded. I can tell it is atarting when the time remaining starts to fluctuate, then the download bar may stop ans start over. It seems to be an icloud problem but I thought I would check to see if anyone else has had the problem and was able to get it taken care of. It should be noted that everyonce in a while I do get a complete download.

These alerts occur due to timeouts or conflicts trying to write a file during download.
If you encounter this issue while while downloading something from the iTunes Store:
Delete your iTunes Downloads folder, located in:
    Mac OS X:
~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads   Note: "iTunes Media" may appear as "iTunes Music. Also, the tilde (~)  refers to your Home directory.
After locating your iTunes Downloads folder:
    Quit iTunes.
Delete the Downloads folder on your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Check for Available Downloads.
Enter your account name and password.
Also review this support aticle as it might be causing due to internet connection: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368

  • 1st Generation iPod problem - folder icon/exclamation!

Any help would be appreciated. I have a 1st generation iPod and it has worked fine since 2002. The battery seems fine and have had no problems with it until yesterday. When I connected my iPod via firewire to my Mac, iTunes wouldn't recognize it. Then, I tried to reconnect the firewire cord and still nothing. So I went with the 5 "R's" . I tried to reset it, then that's when it started. The apple icon came on and then the folder icon + !. I then went through all 5 "R's" and it never did reset or restore or anything. Any combination of buttons I push on it, I get the apple icon for a couple of seconds and then the folder icon + ! and then it goes blank. I can't put it in disk mode or anything. It does the same thing every time. I don't think it's the battery b/c it was charged and the charge time was still very good. anyone with any history on this may be able to help! THANK YOU!

I'm not sure about not sync'ing properly, but plug in your earphones and your volume bar should re-appear.
