Downloads folder missing

Hi.  I accidentally deleted my fanned out downloads folder from my dock.  A plain downloads folder shows in trash but when I remove it and insert it in the dock, it dones not function the way the original does.  How can I get the other one back and have it fan out from the dock?

You are saying there is no Download folder in your Home folder? Just a folder icon with an arrow in the lower left. That's an alias. Delete it. Press COMMAND-SHIFT-N to create a new folder. Name it Downloads. Drag it to the Dock's right side. Of course nothing will appear until you put some downloaded files in it.

  • Downloads folder missing after system restore from Time Machine

I installed a new HDD, installed Leopard, and the did a system restore from Time Machine. Everything seems to work fine except from a big question mark in the dock, where downloads folder should be. Any suggestions pls?

Thank you very much for your quick answers.
Probably the problem originated from excluding the Downloads folder from my backup, although it should have been there in my new installation. The interesting thing was that this folder were nowhere to be found in the Finder, and by trying to download something from Safari, it just wouldn’t.
I did a Repair Permissions from the HDD, not the Leopard DVD, and all came back to normal.
I have to admit, that coming from The Win world, this HDD replacement was the easiest and fastest ever, by far!

  • Just got a new Mac Mini with Lion - where is the downloads folder in the Window tab that is at the top of the page in Safari?  I used this a lot and really miss it!

I just got a new Mac Mini with Lion - the Window tab at the top of the Safari Browser used to ahve a downloads folder in it along with Activity etc - but it is not there anymore. Any way to get it back or is there another location it sits in?  I used it when I'd copy video info from the activity folder and then paste into the download folder and presto - I downloaded the video onto my computer.  I really miss this capability!

Download activity is found by clicking on the gadget on the right:

  • Downloads Folder No Longer Jumps Up When Saving Attachments

When saving attachments in Mail, my downloads folder on the Doc used to jump up a couple of times when I hit "save" from within an email that I received to signify that I just saved it into that folder.
However, for no rhyme or reason, the downloads folder no longer jumps up when I save attachments. The attachment still save in to that folder but I miss the pop-up action telling me that it did.
I searched the net and posts and found nothing on this quark. This is driving me nutz!
    Please help!

Check in System Preferences>Dock and check off Animate opening applications and see if that doesn't do it. Not sure if that is why but it is worth a shot.

  • How do I add the Downloads folder to my dock?

I updated to Mavericks (OS X) and now I can't drag and drop anything onto my dock. Prior to upgrade, every once in a while, the Downloads folder would disappear from the dock, but I could just drag and drop it back in.
Now when I try to add to my dock, all that happens is that the folder is removed from the Sidebar in Finder.
I also don't have a dotted line beside the trash can (it's a solid line).. When I drag the folder onto the dock, the space between the solid line and the trash can expands, but I just end up removing stuff from my sidebar.
I feel like I've completely missed something..
    Thanks in advance!

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.
Finder/Preferences/Sidebar -s the home folder checked there?

  • I have Photoshop CS5 and am trying to download the Camera Raw plug in which will enable me to look at RAW images from a Nikon D800 . The download appears in my " Downloads " folder but when I try to open a RAW image I get a message up which says it can't

I have Photoshop CS5 and am trying to download the Camera Raw Plug in that will allow me to open images taken with a D800 camera .
It appears the download has been successful when I look in my " Downloads " Folder but I still get a message up saying the installed version of Camera RAW won't support the Camera model ( i.e. D800 ) . What am I missing ??
    Tony Fletcher

You need to download and install Camera Raw 6.7.1 for CS5. Once you have downloaded it, you need to install it while CS5 is closed.
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Camera Raw 6.7.1 Update
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Camera Raw 6.7.1 Update
Once downloaded, unzip/unpack the file, and run the executable to start the update, following the instructions.

  • How do I put the "downloads" folder back on the dock?

I accidentally clicked and dragged my "downloads" folder off of the dock today and it of course disappeared.
My question is how do I get it back? I went to my "downloads" folder on my HD and I dragged it back to the dock. But when I did that I got the paper icons but not the folder icon.
Thanks for your help. I'm sure I'm missing something simple.

You're almost there! Just control click the icon in the dock and select Display as Folder. Then control click once more and select Fan, then one last time and select Sort by Date Added. You will then have the original behavior of the Downloads folder.

  • ITunes 7 deleted "Downloads" folder of music from iTunes and iPod

In iTunes 6 I had iTunes point towards "My Music" folder in windows for my library.
One of the folders in "My Music" was called "Downloads".
NB: the music in "Downloads" is NOT my music downloaded from the iTunes Music Store... it isn't copy protected etc...
Upon upgrading to iTunes 7, i got !'s next to all my 'downloads' music.
I checked the folder and non of the music was there... all completely gone.
I do have a back up of this music, so not all is lost, but the backup is at home and I won't be able to get it for a few weeks.
So in the mean time, I plugged my iPod in, hoping to copy the downloads music off it to use until i could get my backup.
When i plugged my ipod in I got that nice new overview screen of whats on your ipod and it told me there was an update available. Ok thats cool, I'll download it an install it later (so i chose that option...)
As soon as I had done this, the iPod started updating itself and poof... all the downloads are gone of the iPod!!
Ive never had this happen before, usually if there is music on the ipod that isn't in itunes it just leaves it in there and syncs what is in my library.
I then went back to the Downloads folder in My Music to do some investigating. It turns out there were some itunes related files in there. What! iTunes deleted my "Downloads" folder, and replaced it with its own one? Grr...
Unfortunately i didn't write down what those files are, but I believe they were the files for the iPod update.
The update of my ipod actually failed and i can't get it to work... and since that has happened, the downloads folder isn't even there at all anymore. My guess would be that if i could get itunes to do the update again, the folder would reappear with those files again.

HERE IS A way too long diplomatic rant:
This is my third post on this subject. This is a real problem. And it strongly appears (based on what I've been reading from others, plus my own experience) that the new iTunes is the culprit.
But this problems is not limited to a folder named 'Downloads'.[/b.] ITunes, somehow, and for some reason, will delete entire album folders of music in the default 'Music' directory.
Here's what happened to me. Mind you, this involves music I converted to MP3's from CD's I own. I buy about ten-twenty CD's a month, so this is not some Orwellian nightmare affecting merely downloaded songs--purchased or otherwise.
Here is a typical example of what's happening:
    BEFORE iTunes v7 was installed:
-An 'Artist' folder named 'A Perfect Circle' contained the following 'Album' folders: 'Mer De Noms', 'The Thirteenth Step', 'eMotive'
SHORTLY AFTER iTunes 7 (about a month or so ago):
-Perfect Circle folder contained only the eMotive album. The rest were gone: this means not in the trash. Not moved. No where on the HD. Simply zapped.
I've lost MP3 albums from purchased CD's from Bob Marley, Led Zeppellin, Bjork, etc. It has affected at least 50 artist folders. I rip entire albums that I buy: I'm not trying to pass judgement though. I just want the point to be driven home that this bug is big, and it's affecting people who have spent much time and energy legitimately converting their music collections.
Am I missing something? I know I'm not alone in this, but this bug doesn't seem to be getting the attention it deserves from Apple. This is a major screw up. HAS APPLE RELEASED A STATEMENT? Forgive me if it has. But I can't find it. Maybe it's right under my nose?
Anyway, I do have all my music backed up on CD's and DVD's where they can't be corrupted. And all those discs are copied and stored in a remote location, in case of fire. This might seem extreme, but when you've spent a year of your life converting hundreds of albums and tagging them meticulously, you don't take chances. The only problem with this backup method is that my backup is spread out over many, many read-only discs. Moving it back to my hard drive will be laborious.
Can someone tell me if Apple has addressed this? Because I don't want to use iTunes at all if it is going to delete files. And I DON'T care if this is some function I'm not aware of. Any software that would delete files, either mistakingly or through some helpful feature is bad software. Deleting files (w/o even sending it to the Trash!) is one function that ought not be automated, or performed by any application other than the OS itself, under direct control from the user. I've turned off the option that lets iTunes manage and 'organize' my music for me. I can do that myself, and I don't like some of the things it does.
I have a friend in the media, and I'm thinking about issuing a press-release on this bug if further research indicates this is a more pervasive problem that Apple is downplaying. Certainly they are aware of it, as others have written on it here and elsewhere.
Can someone from Apple please contact me? I want to know when it is safe to use this program again. This problem is real, and just because it hasn't affected everyone, doesn't mean it has affected someone.

  • Downloaded purchases are stuck in 'Downloads' folder

I purchased some songs today, and my PC crashed while downloading. Once I rebooted, I was missing one song from my purchases. I checked for purchases. All purchases had been downloaded, so I searched for the file using Windows. I found the missing song file in the iTunes folder, but in a subfolder called 'downloads'. The music file is there, along with a small file called 'Info-Quicktime Preferences'. Instead of the music file having the name of the song, it's called 'Download'. When I import the file in to My Music, it won't play, iTunes will not locate the track info, and the file type is M4A instead of M4P. How do I get iTunes to process and recognize this purchase and play it?

I kinda had the same problem but with tv shows instead of songs. I found a way to move the tv shows, in your case the music, into the itunes, but not as a tv show, as a movie. I don't know if this going to help but it might get you on the right track. This is what i did:
I know that it's going to be long, so stick with me:
open "my computer" and find your "downloads" file in the "itunes music" folder. Then open another "my computer" and get into your itunes "tv shows" folder, or in your case you'll have to find where ever itunes has sent your music that you KNOW YOU HAVE IN ITUNES. Lets say you have 2 folder's in there, your "downloads" folder and a "family man" folder, or whatever folder it is for you; one containing your missing episodes/music (downloads), and the other your episodes/music that you KNOW YOU HAVE (family man). On my computer 1 click into downloads folder and go all the way till you see the missing episodes/music, NOT THE THE FOLDERS, you want the files.
On my computer 2 open your "family man" folder/whatever you found, and drag missing episodes/music into "family man" folder/whatever you found.
Once you have that, you should be able to see the missing episodes/music somewhere in itunes. I really wish i could tell you where but i really don't know. It may show right up in your music section, then it may not.
I don't know if this will help, but it's maybe worth try, it know this worked for my missing episodes.

  • Why are some of my downloads not appearing in my download folder?

Yesterday, I downloaded a publishing template from createspace.com. I worked in the template all day. I did not save it to my computer, because I figured it would be in my download folder, but today when I tried to find it there, it was not there. This is not the first time that a download is missing from the downloads file. Am I doing anything wrong?

hello suwaneesid, you may have selected to open (instead of save) the file which will download it into windows temporary folder & opened with an associate program, but where it gets deleted again after it has been used.

  • Restore "Download" folder icon

    Hi,
I moved my Download folder to another partition and created a sym link in my HOME dir to that location.
The problem is that now in Finder, I see the Download folder with a "link" icon. Is there a way of restoring the previous icon ?
I tried dragging the icns file from
    System ▸ Library ▸ CoreServices ▸ CoreTypes.bundle ▸ (control-click) Show Package Contents ▸ Contents ▸ Resources
to the icon which is shown when I open the Info of the folder but instead os seing the original icon, I see a white icon with ".icns" written on it.
    Thanks,
    Tex

    No it doesn't work.
I Googled and found this page http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=83832
So there is a info.plist file which says which maps icons to elements placed in the Finder's sidebar (/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents )
    <dict>
    <key>CFBundleTypeIconFile</key>
    <string>ToolbarDownloadsFolderIcon.icns</string>
    <key>CFBundleTypeName</key>
    <string>Toolbar Downloads Folder</string>
    <key>CFBundleTypeOSTypes</key>
    <array>
    <string>tDwn</string>
    </array>
    <key>CFBundleTypeRole</key>
    <string>None</string>
    <key>LSTypeIsPackage</key>
    <false/>
    <key>NSPersistentStoreTypeKey</key>
    <string>Binary</string>
    </dict>
I think what my system is now missing is the
    <string>Toolbar Downloads Folder</string>
and doesn't know what is my Download folder.

  • I have attempted to download the free trial of Acrobat XI, the application file appears to be in the download folder however the setup progress bar was hanging so I cancelled.  Now I don't know what to do, please advise

Please advise how I install the free trial of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro.  I started the download process and can see the files in the Downloads folder however the setup screen was hanging so I cancelled.  Now I don't know what to do.  It goes back to the original download screen

    Thanks Pat
I have now brought my daughters laptop into work as she has CS6 so I thought it would be easier to set up her laptop to the work network, set up an email account for her and attempt to email my 270 certificates that way. How wrong was I.  First of all Acrobat X Pro would not open so I did a reinstall.  Still wouldnt open so I had to find a patch to fix it.  I can now open it.  When I open Word 2013 and check the options, the PDFMaker is in the active section but when I open word the Adobe toolbar is not appearing. I've opened Acrobat X Pro and have discovered that it's missing a plugin - Convert2AdobePdf (DistillerPI.api) so I'm now in the process to find out how to install this plugin.  I have seen through this site that there was a problem with Word 2013 and the Adobe Toolbar which is exactly my new problem.  I have to say, after 3 days of trying to perform what you would think is a very simple function, I'm ready to just convert 270 individual pdf's and email them individually, I would have had the job done by now !

  • Safari 5 - Download folder

When I was using Safari 4 and I decided to download a piece of software, Safari allowed me to choose which folder I wished to save that particular file to. Since installing Safari 5 the download goes immediately to the \users\%%name\Downloads folder causing me to move the file to where I want it to be after the download is finished.
The Options menu only allows me to select a folder different from the Downloads folder. Have I missed a setting somewhere or is the download process limited in Safari 5?

I have the same concern. I want to choose what to do, I don't want the dumb computer to do it for me.
It is a logical thing to improve or add features to an update and not to hide or eliminate them.
I will go back to ver. 4

  • What is ft.exe doing in my downloads folder ?

I have noticed that something called 'ft.exe' is in my downloads folder with a Created and Modified date of today. The downloads icon in the dock bounced up and down a few times earlier, and though I thought it strange (as I was not downloading anything) I did not give it a second thought. But now I have looked in the folder and seen the FT.EXE file I am a bit suspsicious (especially agter googling the file and seeing it is referred to in the context if Malware.
How can I check if anything malicius has been downloaded ?
I have alwasys been undet the impression that MACS were bulettproff and there was not need for virus / Malware checkers. Is this still the right view or have the hackers turned their attention to MACS?
    thanks

something 'arrived' midday as well as the earlier ft.exe
More than likely, the download was prompted by the same method the Flashback Java exploit used, which is why I had you turn off Java in the browser's preferences.
What such sites do is attack by using Java to initiate a Java applet on your computer. That in turn downloads the payload they really want to get on your system; which would probably be the cause of two separate downloads.
How secure are MACs these days -my Missing Manual book, which is a couple of years old say they are bullet proof and there is no need to run virus checkers etc.
noondaywitch pretty much already nailed it. I have never yet seen the need to install AV software on my Macs. All current Mac exploits are in one of three categories.
The older and more common type are Trojans (though there isn't even many of these). The perps try to get you to install malware on your system by making it sound like something you would want, or need. Until you initiate the installation, they can't do a thing.
The newer ones are jumping on the Flashback bandwagon and trying the Java end-around. Since Java is already running (if you have it on), they don't need to talk you into running an app, the browser will just do it.
The last and actually most prevalent is torrent downloads. That "free" copy of Photoshop you installed? There's no telling what else ended up on your system. The crooks pack these torrents with extra packages of stuff you definitely don't want on your system. Keyloggers, backdoors, etc. When you give any installer your admin password to install the software, it doesn't need to ask you again for the pieces you weren't expecting. The simple solution there of course is to never, ever download software from file sharing sites.

  • How do I use one downloads folder for multiple users?

I recently added my girlfriend a profile in my Imac. We both have seperate Profiles and logins however I would like to find out, if the the Downloads folder can be used by both profiles. I found that each profile has their own Downloads folder, and goes to their own locations.
I would like to find out, if its possible to re-direct my downloaded files as well as her downloaded files into just ONE "Downloads" folder. The default destination of the downloads folder would be /users/girlfriend(name of girlfriend). I want to change it to /users/(me) so that all downloads would just go to one folder.
    Thanks in advance!
