Downloads missing from dock

Both the downloads icon and the documents icon are missing from the dock.  I try to drag them from Finder and nothing happens.  Where they should be there are very light grey bars.  This sounds odd, but I think they got pulled below the dock.  Sometime they appear in grey behind the dock but cannot be opened by clicking on them.  How do I get them back.

(this is not going to solve it but it will help us see what you're saying. can you hit shift+cmd+4 at the same time, the cursor will become crosshairs. now hit space bar. the cursor should become a camera. place this camera on the dock, the dock should be highlighted when doing this, and click the mouse.
A picture will be saved on your dock, upload that picture here for us to see.
if you have your dock hidden this will not work, you'll need to right clickt he track where it separates your applications with the trash icon and then right click that go to dock preferences and then uncheck automatically hide and show dock. you can also access these settings in system preferences>dock
should look something like this (I customized my dock so it won't look exactly like this but it will isolate your dock

Your Home folder is located in the /Users/ folder. Double-click on the disk icon on your Desktop. Double-click on the Home folder. Select the Downloads folder and drag its icon into the Dock on the right side of the Dock's sizing bar (next to the Trash icon.)

    macbook pro, osx ver 10.9.5

i made a new folder and put it in dock and added it to finder, but my downloads are not going into the file even though that's where i direct it to go.

  • Applications folder missing from Dock and Finder

I was a little confused to find my applications folder missing from the Dock on my Macbook Pro today - I can't think of anything which I may have done to actively cause it to go missing. I opened up the finder and dragged the applications icon from the LHS of the finder onto the RHS of the dock, but rather than reappearing in the doc it just disappeared.
When I went back to the finder to try again I discovered that it had vanished from there as well. I ran a search in the finder for "applications" and found the applications folder in the results, but when I try to open it I get the following error message "The alias “Applications” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."
Does anyone have any ideas on what might have caused this or on how I get my Applications folder back on the Dock? Any help would be really appreciated!

The Applications folder on the dock is a shortcut, or more specifically, an alias.
It sounds like what you did was to drag the Applications item from the Finder sidebar...which is also an alias. By dragging it from the sidebar, it's as if you'd dragged an icon off the dock. It poofs and disappears.
To get them back, open a Finder window and navigate to Macintosh HD (or whatever you've named your hard drive). At the root level of the drive lives your Applications folder (the actual folder, not an alias). Drag that one to the sidebar to replace that shortcut, and drag it again to the Dock to replace that shortcut as well.
If you click on Macintosh HD and all you see are System, Library, and Users and have no Applications folder, then something terrible has happened.

  • Downloads disappeared from Dock. How can I re-establish ?

Downloads suddenly disappeared from the Dock. Everytime I download now, it just stays within the download of the window, instead of going to the icon i had on Dock. Any way I can easily set this back ?

  • Safari is missing from dock; have reviewed the various discussions w/o luck

Safari appeared with a question mark over it, not sure what I did but now it's gone.  I did a spotlight search and found a Safari folder but it only contains bookmarks which i am unabe to open.  The other users on the computer do have Safari.
We have four users on our iMac.  Just noticed that on appears w/o the Safari icon but does have a question mark where the icon used to be.  The other user's page shows the utility disc on the desktop but no icon on the dock.
The only thing that comes to mind is that we recently purchased iphone's and used the user pages for these phones (iTunes).

Carolyn, thank you for you suggestions, here's the latest:
I clicked on the your blue link to Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo and restarted the Mac.  The Safari app was not in the Applications folder so I went to the download folder and started up from there but i don't what it did bc there was still no Safari.
Then I re installed Safari 5.0.5 as you noted.  In the process of installing i got the following message:
Selct the disk where you want to install the Safari Software.  Safari can't be installed on this disk.  The update requires Mac O S X 10.6.7.
One of the users still has Safari, but the other three do not.

  • Mail icon is missing from Dock and not in Applications folder.  What to do?

My email icon disappeared from my dock when I turned off my computer.  In the past I go to the Applications folder and just drag the Mail application to the dock and I am good to go.  Now my Mail program is no longer in my Application folder.  Is there a site I can go to and download the Mail application for MacBook?  I am using Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Thanks!

I actually found the System disk and reinstalled all of the Applications (including Mail), but when I went to open it, it said "this version of Mail does not work with the Operating System (Mac OS X 10.5.8).  What now?!
    Thanks.

  • Definitely removing TimeMachine and Download folder from Dock?

Is it possible to definitely remove the app Time Machine and the default folders like Download from the dock?
Each time I restart OSX10.5.4, they keep reappearing....

Same thing happened when I first used Leopard. The Documents stack would not go away, even though I poofed it repeatedly. Eventually, it went away & never came back. I was never able to explain this, and nobody answered my post on the subject.

  • Downloads missing from latest FF update 20.0

    I just updated to 20.0
the "download" box does not show up now...
I can see the green progress in the thumbnail on the
    task bar... but no box....
I either have to go to my download folder or click
    on "tools" "Downloads"
Where did the box go... how do I get it back?
    thanks

In Firefox 20, an arrow should have appeared on your main navigation toolbar. The arrow turns green when downloading or until you check it. Clicking that arrow opens a download panel with recent downloads and a link to the full list in the Library dialog. More info: [[Find and manage downloaded files]].
Can you find that icon? If it doesn't appear on any bar, you could check the Customize dialog in case it is in there.
    * right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Customize
    * View menu > Toolbars > Customize ''(if you don't normally display the classic menu bar, tap the Alt key to display it so you can access the View menu)''
    Any luck?

Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.

  • HT201210 After downloading latest version of iTunes it will not open.  This error message is displayed;  The program can't star because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.  Then a second error box

After iTunes requested that I download latest version on PC it now will not open.  2 error messages appear.  first:  The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.  second:  iTunes was not installed correctly please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).  I have tried reinstalling a number of times and restarting computer but no luck.

This happened to me today as well post installing the latest version of itunes.   I did a search on google for the error and came across a recommendation to :
Note: Start Windows in Safe Mode to complete any of the following steps if you're unable to access Windows normally due to the msvcr80.dll error.
If, and only if, you're receiving the msvcr80.dll is missing error when you open Apple iTunes, do the following: (skip this step if your msvcr80.dll error is occurring with a different program)
Uninstall from Windows the following five programs in this order: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and finally Apple Application Support. If you have iCloud, remove it as well.
Uninstalling these programs in Windows is done from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
Note: Songs and playlists in iTunes will not be removed when you uninstall the iTunes program or any of the other, already-mentioned Apple programs. If you'd still like to back them up, they're usually located in the My Music folder in Windows.
Download the latest version of iTunes from Appleand note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
Run the iTunes installation as an administrator. If you're not sure how to do that, see How Do I Open an Elevated Command Prompt? for help. That procedure shows you how to open the Command Prompt program as an administrator, but the steps are essentially the same for anything, including the iTunes installation package you just downloaded.
A general overview of removing and reinstalling iTunes can also be found here on Apple's site but the above procedure seems to work better in this particular situation.

  • TS4123 A recent download of an iTines update - for whatever reason - failed on my computer.  Since then I get a system error statement telling me that the program cannot open because 'MSVCR80.d11' is missing from my computer.  When I attempt to open iTune

A recent download of an iTunes update, for some unknown reason, failed on my computer.   Since then I get a system error message everytime I log on telling me that the program cannot be opened because 'MSVCR80.d11' is missing from my computer.   When I try to open iTunes I get an 'error 7 (Windows error 126)' message and am advised to reinstall iTunes.   However, when I attempt to do this, it downloads the programme and gets as far as installation, at which point I get yet another message: this time 'Service Apple Mobile Device failed to start'.
I am at a loss to know what to try next and would appreciate any assistance.  I'm also concerned that, in the process of reinstalling iTunes, I am going to lose all the music I have collected over the years.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 with iTunes installed. Now my iPhone 4S is no longer recognized in iTunes. Connecting with USB sends me directly to the MS app that downloads pictures from the iPhone. Suggest this is a question of missing Apple driver.

I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 with iTunes installed. Now my iPhone 4S is no longer recognized in iTunes. Connecting the iPhone with USB sends me directly to the MS app that downloads pictures from the iPhone. Suggest this is a question of missing Apple driver for Windows 8, iTunes and iPhone. MS does not care! This seems to be a general problem with Windows 8 that a number of drivers that used to work with Windows 7 now do not work, ie. iPhone to iTunes, HTC to HTCSync, Samsung to Kies etc. I need this connection to work in order to syncronize with Outlook and my iTunes library.

Maybe it would have been a better idea to confirm that iTunes is supported in Windows 8 before buying a computer with that Operating System.
There will be a new version of iTunes released this month... no one forced you to upgrade prior to a supported version of iTunes being released.
