Downloads open as Text Edit files

Hi, I bought my first Mac a couple of weeks ago (never been able to afford one before!) and it's proving to be as amazing as I expected, but I'm still trying to work lots of things out.
When I try to download files from the internet or from email attachments they go to my downloads folder but when I open them they come up as what looks like a computer code in a Text Edit window.
At first I thought this was because I was trying to open Windows only file types but I just tried to download a game that was supposed to be for Mac only and it happened here as well. (This is the website I was trying to download from: http://absolutist.com/mac/bubble_shooter/ )
I appreciate I'm probably being a moron but I've trawled the forums here and can't seem to find an answer - any help would be very welcome.
Thanks

To The Apple Discussion Boards!
After you click on the download link a window will pop up showing you what type of file it is you are trying to download. In this case, it's a .sit file.
In the center of the window you will see:
_*Open With.*_ Make sure this is selected.
Now check to see what application/program is selected to open your files. It appears to be some text edit program. You will need to select an application that you want to open your .sit files or all your files for that matter.
I personally, use the free Stuffit Expander to open all my files instead of depending on the OS to open them.
You can download Stuffit Expander from VersionTracker.

  • Adobe photoshop lightroom 4.pkg trying to open with text edit -- how do i open as application?

downloaded trial for mac, all requirements are met, but cannot get download to open as an application, mac is trying to open with text edit; downloaded several times, every time the disk utility opens

The .dmg was opening with Disk Utility, where it would verify and then mount the "Lightroom 4.0" disc image on my desktop.  Clicking on this opened the folder, which contained the .pkg file, but it wouldn't work (opening with TextEditor). I changed the .dmg file to open with DiskImageMounter and thought I would have to manually change the .pkg file as well, but once the .dmg file opened with DiskImageMounter, the Lightroom 4 file opened with it as well and I got the installation screen right away.  Installation from that point on went as usual.  It was a very frustrating experience, but now I know where to look when a file won't install.  But as for your question, they both opened with DiskImageMounter.

WHenWhen I export a pages document as an ePub file the result is a blank locked text edit file on my desk top not an ePub file as previously no problem creating. How do I fix? HHD

Try adding .epub to the end of the name.
I assume you are aware that to open an .epub file you need a special app, not TextEdit or Pages, right?

  • Can't save my Text Edit files!

Hope I'm in the right forum.  This started yesterday and I don't know why or how to fix it.
I can't save my Text Edit Files (rtf).  I got 1 error message that can't save file until problem is fixed but I have no idea what the problem is.
Running Text Edit 1.7.1 (289.5).  iMac OS 10.7.5
    Can Someone help?
    Thanks
    Allen

    Hi,
I've been having a similar problem with nonsensical error messages from text edit when I try to save. Repairing permissions doesn't seem to have helped, but I have found that checking the 'hide extension' box in the save window seems to get around it.
    cheers all

  • Opening a text edit document in Firefox

    Hello,
I am a beginning student in web design. I am trying to open a simple document in text edit with Firefox. When I open the file in a new tab, nothing appears.
    How can I fix this?
    Thank you

    Finally found this one!!!
    1. Make .txt file.
    2. Add this for Firefox:
    <body contentEditable="true" onload="load()">
Or both that and this for IE:
    JavaScript:
    function load(){
    window.document.designMode = "On";
    3. Change it to an .html file.
    4. Create a bookmark for the file. You can use "Google Shortcuts" if FF easily, or check out "Custom Buttons" and the user forum.
    For more info:

SOLVED! For me, at least. You can edit as you please, and then save the file fro your browser. When it reloads, Its all there!! ALso check out: "It's all text!"

  • My Macbook with 10.6.8 is having trouble with certain applications- Word will not open, and text edit or pdf will not print.

My Macbook (13 inch 2008) running OS 10.6.8 is having trouble with some applications.  Word will not even open.  I cannot print from text edit or Preview or Adobe.  Excel sometimes opens but very slow.  What could be wrong?  I have repaired permissions, used an antivirus program, deleted some old MS fonts, and still no change.  I have 1 G RAM and there seems to be plenty available and I have 50 G of hard drive space empty.

Well, first 1gb of Ram is not plenty. It's the absolute bare minimum just to run OS X 10.6.8. The MS Office applications are ram hogs also. I would recommend three things.
    1. Get more ram.
    2. Reinstall and update your MS Office applications.
    3. Reinstall Snow Leopard.
If you're not familiar with Activity Monitor you might have a look at this link and you'll be able to judge your ram situation a little better.

  • Do you know how to open VMG text message files downloaded from Nokia mob?

Hi I've tried looking for software which will allow me to read vmg files from my Nokia mobile. I've downloaded abc nokia but without success. Do I need to find a mac specific version of this software or is isync the way to go? I'm stumped!

Hi. I just passed by the same issue you have.
VMG can be opened with TextEdit, but it has some informations that (i think) you don't need.
I wanted to gather all msg, so I could have some kind of history.
This is how i've done it:
1º Used a terminal tool that converts VMG files into a single CSV file with all the messages:
    VMGtoCSV : http://mac.wareseeker.com/Network-Communication/vmgtocsv-1.0.zip/c37ec0bba
-This has some filename problems with some characters, like ";" and "&",so i had to rename a few...
2º VMGtoCSV creates a file with the fields separated by ";" instead of ",". So when I open the file on Number (where I wanted to keep the messages), it didn't separated the fields correctly.
3º I had to open the CSV file on TextEdit, and then replace the ";" separator for the "," separator.
4º Then I just dragged the CSV into Numbers and delete the columns I didn't want.
    Best of luck.

  • Text edit file DS Store

After upgrading to Leopard, my office Mac now automatically opens a TextEdit file titled ".DS_Store"; the contents of which is: "Bud1

    Two things
first, check that textedit is not listed in your Login Items list in the Accounts folder.
    Then, find the file,
    com.apple.TextEdit.plist
which is in your "User"/Preferences folder where "User" is your short login name. (Use Finder to locate it). This file is probably corrupt.
Take this .plist file and drag it into the trash. Do not flush!
Now restart and see if your problem goes away.
If everything is OK you can now delete the trash at your leisure.
If you still have the problem, post back.

  • How come I cannot attach a text edit file?

    Hi,
I created a TextEdit file and I also included several photos within the document. The document is an RTF file "with attachments". I want to e-mail this to a friend. When I go to send it, the document is grayed out and will not allow me to select it. I am fairly certain that by placing .jpgs into the document I have created this problem. Is there a way to do a "save as" so that I can e-mail my document?
    thanks!
    Gary

Hi I wonder if you could help me with the same problem. At first all the files in my directories could be uploaded. Now I can't even attach the smallest .pages files - surely all files should normally be able to be attached to a Safari emails unless they're massive jpg files.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Will Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 open the .prel edit files I've made using Adobe Premiere Elements 11?

Can't find an answer to this, help would be appreciated!

I don't dispute Ann's answer, but if you have CS6, make a copy of the project and try it.

  • Alphabetize text edit file.paid, ad free, app?

      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.53 GHz
I strongly prefer hassle free, ad free, NON free application that easily accomplishes this task:
copy and paste a list in eg. Textedit to an (undisclosed as of now!!! )  App, that sorts a list of words in alphabetical order-
then I would presumably re paste it back to Textedit...
That is,  unless this new app is really cool as an organizing tool unto itself!! , in which case I would put my word lists in this new app.
    You know, something like EverNote
but any reliable hassle free ad free  app is fine too.
    Thank you Apple Support Community

Why not try TextWrangler as an alternative to TextEdit. As long as you're just dealing with plain txt (no styling or other fanciness), it will do a far better job, and can sort (ie, alphabetize). It's free, but is of higher quality than many paid apps, and has no ads.

  • Why won't Text Edit and Preview open in Lion?

I have installed Lion over Snow Leopard on my MacPro Dual Core Intel Xeon AND also mad a clean installation on an external hard drive.
In neither case will Text Edit or Preview open.
When I first log into Lion as the various application open on the desktop I notice that a couple of Text Edit files on the desktop mount a coloured icon. After everything is done the icons revert to a grey and white one with a grey "RTF" in place of the picture.
I found the same problem with pages (1Work 9.0) but then I found and upgrade in the Lion recovery pages on the Apple website. Unfortunately there is nothing similar for Text Edit or Preview.
Otherwise everything else seems to work.

I just found the solution on our problen on another post entitled:
After upgraded to LION, Preview.app and Textedit.app keep crash
The problem only occurred on one account on my machine.  For that account the ownership on the "Library" folder at the root level of that account was wrong.  I set it to the credentials of that user (me) and now both Preview and TextEdit open and work without crashing.  This is a hidden folder when in the Finder, but I use the Terminal application a lot, and from there I did a chown to change the owner and group of the Library folder.  An additional problem is that you need to have root access to make the change.
The discussion I refer to above gives the procedure to use when in the Finder, so if you're not familiar with using the Terminal window, that is probably the best solution.  In that discussion, see the post from Silvertoe on Jul 21, 2011 10:08 PM.
    Good luck.

  • Text Edit: Saving says "This File Does Not Exist"

When I'm in Text Edit, it often won't let me save- claiming the file does not exist. Sometimes I'll open an older Text Edit file and make an edit, go to save again, and I get the same message. To remedy, it will let me save to the Desktop instead of say, a folder on the server that I'm working in. But even then- there are times that it will say the file does not exist when I go to save to the Desktop, but then it will just save it there anyway. Then I have to do a drag and drop into the correct folder I needed in the first place.
This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough for me to think something is clearly wrong. Just to give a run-down, this happens on my work computer. It's a Mac desktop. Running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8. If anyone has any thoughts on the problem, I'm all ears. I'm also not terribly tech savvy in the way some other people are in this community. But I know my way around a computer pretty well.

Copied from another thread for those who can't find the solution:
"The problem when you get that "The document Untitled could not be saved as "-----" .  The file doesn't exist" message is actually nothing more than a Pathway problem.  The pathway Text Edit wants to use has been corrupted and TextEdit has no idea where to turn.
Odds are VERY likely that if you look at the "start" folder of the path from which you are trying to save (and from which you probably save regularly), it is NOT the Top-Level Hard Drive Folder, but some folder inside the hard drive, possibly nested several layers in.
    To Fix This:
    1) Create any New TextEdit document, and click Save.
    2) When the Save Dialogue box pops up, navigate BACKWARDS to the absolute Top Level Folder of your Mac (probably called something like "Macintosh HD" or the like - we are talking the level ABOVE your User name / account).
    3) Click on that Top Level, and then navigate from there down through your User account to the actual folder where you would like to save your document.  It does not matter how deep your desired folder is located as long as you Start from the absolute Top Level of your entire system.
    4) Click Save.  It should save Just Fine.
What you basically just did was tell your Mac which way to turn - the "directions" the Mac was using got corrupted and the TextEdit save process got lost in the woods.  Doing the steps above sets the save process back on the correct path."
Credits to "Shamovala McNerbstern-Ni" for the solution, from Document could not be saved file does not exist

  • Text Edits Opens Whenever I Try To Open A Disk On My Mac

I have a MacBookAir 10.9.4, and every time I install a disk ( for example; Digital Editions 4.0 Installer.pkg) and try to open it, it opens with Text Edit, and that gets me confused, so how am I suppose to change that?

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app
Right-click or control-click the line and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A file dialog should appear. Select the package you want to install, then press return.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
