Hey nelliemac. Welcome to Mac and OS X. It may take a few weeks but I am sure you will be zipping around OS X wondering why you ever used Windows in the first place! I am trying to understand your question but it seems you are having trouble downloading content off the Internet. Using Safari, a download window will open whenever you click a download link. By default, Safari downloads all files to your desktop. Check there first after the download is complete.
What you are downloading is also important. Make sure you are downloading programs made for Apple OS X. If you download Windows programs OS X still warns you that you are downloading a program...which could be a little confusing because since you CAN NOT run Windows programs on your new iMac.
A good place to learn about your new Mac and its operating system is Apple's Switch 101: The former PC user's guide to getting the most out of your Mac. You can find that here: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
Once you know how your Mac is different (and in many ways the same) as a Windows computer check out Mac 101: Your guide to using a Mac effectively and efficiently. You can find that here: http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
I hope I could help. If you have anymore questions feel free to come back to the Apple discussions. Also remember that the discussions have a powerful search tool (to the right) so before you post do a quick search, odds are someone else had the same question and the answer can be waiting for you! And as always...there is Google.
Enjoy your new computer!

When this occurred I was using Firefox 6.0.2 before I just updated to 7.o. I just tried it again with 7.0 and the problem persists.I've never had problems before; I use our library system (www.hclib.org) all the time to access the NetLib audiobook download site (based on my library card number). I've searched everything I can think of on the Norton Security Suite Version: 4.3.0.5 software. My ISP is xfinity.comcast.com
I have been monkeying around with addons and extensions, could one of them be causing this? I disables almost all the addons but that didn't make a difference either.
I haven't made any changes to Norton since it was installed (automatic updates).
I have a Toshiba Satellite, running Vista.

10:20 call - a problem , have not got the key to the cabinet !
Rest of the day - waiting to see if he can get a key - never hear from him again
Dec 10th Tues, Phone BT for new appointment -note they did not contact me following failed 1st attempt
New date Wed Dec 11th 13:00- 18:00
Dec 11th Wed, Wait in all afternoon - no show, no phone call
18:30 call BT - no apology, no offer of new appointment. Will call me 8-9 am tomorrow.
Dec 12th Thursday 8-9 no call
09.30 call BT. Order Tracking say they will talk to engineers for new dateand call back
10.30 BT call back and say they will call back by 20:00 tomorrow ,Friday to arrange a date NEXT WEEK
I ask to speak to manager to complain. She will call bnack by 8 pm
11:00 BT man calls to say he has appointment for tomorrow Friday .Choose pm.
19:00 BT *Employee name removed. (manager) calls back in response to my complaint. Says she will check on my new date
19:30 BT TL sidekick calls back to say there is no record of Fridays appointment and will call me Mon am

which cannot be done any other way e.eg manually by phone
Dec 17th Tuesday 10:00 Sam BT says problem fixed and she will talk to engineers today.
Then followed a series of calls to and from BT interspersed with emails ,all offering appointments which were
then cancelled or changed.
Wed am
Wed pm
Thurs am
Jan 7th am
Thurs pm
Settled on this last ,the 8th attempt
Thurs 19th 10:30 checked by phone that it is still on
14:00 Engineer arrives (contractor)
14:25 Engineer departs with Infinity up and running and computer and iPads wifi working. 38 down and 8 up.
19:00 Sam BT calls to offer some compensation 3months broadband and after my suggestion Installation fee
which I calculate as 3 x £15 + 30 = £75
Friday 20th Another BT manager( not *Employee name removed who is supposed to be handling my original complaint) calls to
apologise and attempt to explain the whole **bleep** up. It seems that they ,BT Order Tracking have no actual
influence or control of how Engineers (mostly contractors) arrange installation appointments. The customer can
only talk to them, acting as the middleman. But they cannot insist on Engineering doing anything.
So 9 days later and on the 8th appointment the broadband is working. But have had no internet for 9 days since BT cut off the previous supplier on the evening of Dec9th despite the fact that Infinity had not been installed (by BT!)
A complete and utter farce which had me laughing in disbelief in the end.jcmt wrote:
Perhaps it is time to remind you that Openreach is a BT Group business. So you and your fellow moderators continual bleating that "there is nothing to be done" about Openreach's incompetence and BT's inabaility to do anything about it does not wash.

Switching to Apple - A Sorry Tale
After many years as a PC user I recently decided to give the Apple experience a try and purchased a 20 Inch Intel iMac.
I eagerly received the machine on Tuesday 31st January to find with great disappointment that it would not boot up. On pressing the power button all I got was a solid white light in the bottom right hand corner. Eventually, after about an hour of powering off and on again with the keyboard and mouse in various configurations, the machine suddenly sprung to life.
Things then appeared to go OK for the next couple of hours until I made the seemingly innocent mistake of leaving the machine alone for a short period. Upon my return I found that the keyboard and mouse no longer functioned.
After some more frustrated experimenting, I discovered that I could temporarily fix this problem by unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in again.
At this point I started to search the Apple forums to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problems. I was not really surprised to find several threads mentioning the keyboard issue.
On further investigation, I found the same errors in my system log that other users have experienced and also found (at a cost of about $35) that my keyboard was to blame. I picked up a new one and all of the system log errors and lockups went away.
I should mention that before I went out and spent money on the keyboard I discussed that matter with Apple support. They informed me that I could take the whole machine in to a local Apple store for investigation. If they found the keyboard to be faulty then they would replace it for me. Unfortunately this would have been very inconvenient for me and so I just bit the bullet and bought a new one
Over the course of the next few days I had many more problems with the machine not booting up, both from cold starts and from sleep mode. Again, I searched the forums and found other users with similar problems but unfortunately a solution was not forthcoming and so it was back on the line to Apple support.
A few conversations with them later and after trying many of the experiments detailed elsewhere on the forums it was determined that my machine was faulty and needed to be replaced. The options given to me were: (a) return the machine to the retailer (amazon) for a refund, (b) take the machine into an Apple store for repair or (c) return the machine to Apple for a replacement.
Since I actually still wanted the machine at this stage (a) was not really an option. I was not satisfied with (b) either, since this is a brand new machine I do not want it repaired, so I opted for (c). I was then told that I would be emailed fedex labels within a couple of days to allow me to return the machine. This was on the 4th February.
Two days passed and there was no sign of the fedex labels so I called Apple support once again to see what was going on. The original person I was dealing with wasn’t available and so my case was transferred to another product specialist who said that he would escalate my case as I had already been put to a lot of inconvenience. Once again I was assured that the labels would be with me in the next day or two.
Yet again they failed to materialise and so I tried to call my new contact. After several failed attempts to speak with him I left some phone messages and also sent a couple of emails expressing my concern over the situation and requesting that he contact me as a matter of urgency. He did not return my calls or answer the emails.
Fast forward to yesterday, 13th February, and I call Apple support again and this time, I end up having to speak to yet another case specialist. After going through the usual 15 minutes of recapping the situation I am told that he has no idea what is going on and he is about to leave work for a couple of days. He does however promise to email everyone who has been involved at Apple so far to try and elicit some kind of response. Needless to say, it didn’t work.
So here I am, 15 days after receiving my machine, 10 days after Apple determined that my machine needed to be replaced, $35 out of pocket, having spent countless hours on support forums, waiting on hold, having the same conversations over and over again with different case specialists and I still have not even received the fedex labels to return the faulty machine, never mind receiving a replacement!
This is my experience of switching to Apple so far. Think different indeed.
iMac (intel 20 Inch) Mac OS X (10.4.4)Your experience is most unusual, so I too urge you to hang in there. Note that new machines get automatic support, even from external shops that are Apple certified. User groups often recommend going there first because they do their own repairs instead of shipping the machine out like Apple stores do. Some repairs are only an hour so you can get your machine back after waiting at the shop.
I have a new Intel iMac and have had no hardware problems at all. But do keep in touch with online forums. Remember that if 20 people report a problem there can be hundreds or more who do not have a problem (and so do not report anything) so do not be misled by the number of postings. Consumer Reports canvasses all types of users and Apple comes out on top every time for service and customer satisfaction. I think you just got some, er, Bad Apples

BT move of business telecoms - A tragic tale of co...
My story starts thus..
2 months ago I informed BT I was moving business premises and would like them to assist me in this endeavour.
A nice man from BT local business called me and said this is what we can do for you and this is what the costs will be. We agreed and entrusted him and BT to ensure our business could be moved succefully keeping disruption down to 4 hours.
The big day arrives, the BT new movers team have arranged for all the various engineers to come round on time, and they did. The ISDN 30 switchover happens without a glitch, but the broadband swap.. what a sorry tale.
By accident, some (semi independent spun of) department within BT has booked the broadband job as a 'new install' rather than a 'move' which means certain steps happened in the wrong order (according to the engineer who visited us this morning). So on the day of the move some glassy eyed ("its your problem that there is a problem") openreach engineer does whatever he needs to do, and tells me that the broadband on the line has not been activated and that I need to call such and such number.
I thought no, I wont call that number and be in a queue for half an hour, I will speak to the business movers team, they call some other (semi independent spun off) department within BT and said 'hold your horses, the line could be commissioned anytime before 8pm tonight' so I think OK, these guys know what they are doing so leave it at that.
I come in the next day and still no broadband. I ring the new movers team who say they would love to help but they can't access the system to see whether I have a problem. They transfer me (after the obligatory 10-40 mins wait) to the broadband faults department, who say the 'broadband has been commissioned succesfully, we cannot help you', who thus transfer (after the obligatory 10-40 mins wait) me to another (semi independent spun off) department within BT, who handle the physical lines who say 'they have run a line check and it works, it must be a broadband fault", and then transfer me back to the broadband faults department.
I end up in the bizarre situation of mediating a dispute between one department of BT and another, each blaming the other for the fault. I say 'I have paid 7 grand for you to look after this move for me, why am I the referee between broadband faults, line faults, new movers faults, openreach faults, and wholesale faults?'. Anyway it is resolved that a broadband engineer will come to visit me between 8am and 1pm the next day.
I ring the new movers team and ask politely if I can have a 0800 dialup number as a backup while the problem is solved (I get this automatically with plusnet if there is a problem on my home broadband, which costs me £10 a month). Unfortunately as much as they would like to help they cannot. I get the new apprentice at the office to lookup on his iphone 0845 dial up isps, and I find one, and restore very very slow connectivity. I previously asked whether they could give me a password for a local open zone hotspot but was told that was not their department.
I must add when I spoke to the broadband faults team, i asked for the problem to be escalated. I spoke to a manager who gave me her mobile number and assured me she should would call at 10 am this morning to ensure progress was being made. This call never came, and when I rang the number some guy quizzed me "who are you, how do you know them" etc. When I explained the situation (for the 50th time) he asked for my number, and assured me someone would ring me back within half an hour. Someone did to be fair, but at that time the problem had been temporarily resolved.
Anyway, the broadband guy came round this morning, said "the broadband modem isnt even trying, its not been switched on on this line", he tries to ring a colleague at the exchange, who does not answer, and the engineer says "I could punch his face in, he is allways doing this", because this guy never answers his phone when he is in the midde of something apparently. Our engineer pootles off down to the exchange, and one hour later comes back and say the 'job has been booked in as an install, rather than a move, and thats where YOUR problem is". He says it will work fine now, which it seemingly does. Our engineer dissed the standard router supplied by BT (a silvery slabbish thing) and says he is allways seeing trouble with them, and advise us to not bother usiing them.
So he connects with this little Alcatel 100 model previously supplied by BT, and confirms the line works. He then replaces this modem with ours, which then breaks down. He (which he didnt need to do) tried to fix it for us, but to no avail. He then says he has to get to his next job, and leaves us with a now functioning broadband line, but no functioning equipment to access it.
I drive home and get another router, connect that up and all is fine again.
For another two hours.
After said time, the whole line goes dead (i.e. not only no broadband, but no dial tone). I ring the 5 or 6 (semi independent spun off) departments within BT, who transfer me endlessly (after the obligatory 10-40 mins wait) between themselves after saying "I would love to help, but its not my department" with not only no broadband, but no analogue line to receive faxes on, or to connect my PDQ too.
That is where I am now.
BT's efficiency drive may seem sound on paper, but I have spoken to at least 12 operators within BT, 5 engineers who have called out on visits, who have managed to totally screw up a simple broadband move, and because of the sheer number of personnel involved, must have cost 10 times as much if just one project manager and one engineer had managed such a simple task!
Not only is it frustrating for customers, it is equally so for your employees, because I kid you not, every single person I have spoke to at BT agrees with me about the lamentable structure and service that characterises BT that only becomes apparent when something goes wrong.
Sort it out please.
Anyone got any similar stories?Join the club.
I had an unfriendly Openreach engineer come to my property in January to get a line activated. He made me run around the flat myself to find a line, and 10 minutes after he arrived he just said that he can't install a line, they'd have to dig up the pavement and charge me for that.
Fine I said, and phoned the same day to the provisions team to cancel the new application I made the 2 weeks prior. The lady I spoke to agreed to cancel everything and confirmed that there would be no charge.
for the months of January till end of March I kept receiving bills and eventually a final demand for a new line installation and several months' line rental. Every time I phoned I spoke to a manager who promised me that the problem is resolved and they have now closed the account, however that never happened.
Then they passed the account to a collections agency who phoned me all hours of the day/night - one time they phoned 4 times in a row after 3am on a thursday morning until I picked up.
Then I went and saw a solicitor, took all the documents etc and got them to write BT a letter and finally it all stopped. However, my credit score was affected by all of this and that I'm still trying to resolve...
I swore I'd never return to BT but they're the only ones providing FTTC at the moment and Talk-talk got an Openreach engineer out recently who installed the line for me with no quibbles whatsoever. -
Re-Downloading purchased music
Over the years I have purchased a lot of songs. Due to various computer crashes etc. I no longer have some songs I already purchased. Does anyone know a way I can see a list of ALL the music I have purchased and re-download them. My current Purchased Music" folder only has the tunes from my last computer reformat.
ThanksYou can see what you've purchased by logging into the iTunes Music Store and going to the "Purchase History" area.
But as to re-downloading, sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased tracks. It's your responsibility to make backup copies in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose information from your hard drive. If you haven't made a backup, and don't have your tracks on an iPod, you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks.
You can try contacting iTunes Music Store Customer Service and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis, but don't count on it.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.

I just tried to download InDesign CC trial.
It went through the whole process then gave me a message saying it failed. That some of the optional items couldn't download? I clicked Retry and it's now stuck at 50% downloaded.
Sorry to hear that you are having download issues.
Do you have the latest Creative Cloud Desktop app installed? You can download the latest version here: https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud
Sometimes, simply quit the download, relaunch the desktop app then re-start the download process can resolve the issue.
Please try it out and let us know how it goes.
If you are still having issue with installing, could you take a screencap of the error code please? Thanks! -

After new HD,RAM Apple apps random crashing
Hi, out there,
If any one has been following my sorry tale, here is the next installment. MacBook Pro 17"2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo new 4 GB RAM from Crucial, new HD installed by Apple including Leopard plus updates, new motherboard in last 1 1/2 years, software: iWork, Adobe Creative Suite CS3, most home files copied manually (documents and YES quite a few fonts) am experiencing random crashing esp Safari, Mail and iTunes - sometimes when I am not even near the computer.
Any ideas? (I am kind of tired of troubleshooting - old HD passed all tests, had to manually back up as Time Machine would not work, eliminated at least a dozen or more corrupt InDesign files - but lay it on me!)
AnnexitDoes "not that I know of" cover it? Except for my font obsession (and now that I look, I haven't even reinstalled my extra fonts) I just don't download a bunch of stuff - the usual flashplayer, etc, whatever Adobe Creative Suite needs, but I am pretty much down to business. Apple techs reloaded my Leopard plus all updates, and I think all I put in was the CS3 and iWork 9. I didn't reinstall my files since i had to back up manually, so I added them back manually as well - home folders, etc. The iTunes crash occurred when I wasn't at the computer.
The complete Mail Crash report is below but before that is the first part of the crash report for the- 3 Safari crashes - if you need more please let me know, it is just a lot of information that may just clog up the post. Thanks for your help. I will research how to see what plugins i have - I know that Adobe installs some, but I wouldn't know how to figure out if one was corrupt. I am pretty limited in my understanding of the deeper structure, I understand the general principle of code but have no education or experience in understanding what it says or how to write it, so nothing is obvious. In the past I have used the Terminal to execute sudo commands to do maintanence, and some searches but that is it. Kern[el?] PRotection Failure sounds ominous. It looks like one of the Safari crashes has the same program counter issue as Mail. Yikes!

This problem has been caused by me and is doing my head in.
I will try to keep this as short as possible.
I have itunes on my laptop which was filling up with 600 albums so i decided to buy an external hard drive to transfer the songs and free up space.
In my stupidity i just thought that i could put the whole of itunes and all its files on the hard drive. Big mistake.
To cut a long story short after much mucking about and doing some googling i have managed to get itunes back on the laptop and have the music folder on the ext drive and have it pointed to under preferences.
All my albums show in my itunes library but all have an exclamation mark next to them and wont play.
Also my ipod classic seems to sync but 6 albums i have downloaded int the last couple of days wont transfer to my ipod???(also these 6 have not got exclamation marks next to them)
What the **** have i done and what can i do??
This is driving me mental
ThanksAfter this sorry tale, it is hard to tell exactly went wrong.
The simplest option is to start an new library, but this loses all counts, ratings and play lists.
Firstly I understand you have all your music files on your external drive in a music folder. There needs to be one "header" folder that contains all the folders with your music files.
Secondly I think you have your iTunes folder containing the library files on your c: drive in the music folder.
So...
Close iTunes, then drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music library.xml out of the iTunes folder to the desk top.
Open iTunes and a new empty library will be created.
Go to Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced and ensure that the location of your iTunes Music folder is set to the folder containing your music on the external drive.
Use File>>Add Folder to Library... to add the above folder to iTunes.
Note that if you ever start iTunes with the external drive unplugged, iTunes will default back to the internal drive and you will have to reset the location of the iTunes Music folder in Preferences. -
Hi guys,
I've got a problem with this "lang-bash". Actually I'm trying to install GNU gettext so I successfully did -configure- but no the same for -make-. At this stage I tried a -make check- and I found just one failed test that is:
FAIL: lang-bash
while I can see for example PASS for lang-c, lang-sh and so on.
Any ideas? What is lang-bash and what the problem could be?
Thanks very much in advance!simone83 wrote:
I know it's not your fault but could you be more clear?
You were running the "check" phase of that project's make script. That verifies that the software was built correctly and will function as you expect. It failed on only one test. That is probably because the default version of bash on MacOS X is rather old. In all likelihood, anything you did with gettext and bash would work perfectly. Even though "make check" fails, you can safely do "sudo make install" without concern.
It isn't common for open-source packages to have such verification scripts. For those that do, getting 100% pass is very rare. There are just too many different combinations of system installations.
I'm very sorry, it's just because I'm not very familiar with this kind of things.
That's fine. I would encourage you to continue what you have been doing so that you can learn more about the system. I always discourage people from using those "ports" packages like MacPorts and Fink. They are useful in some specific circumstances, such as when you are using an obscure tool that has 160 dependences that you don't want to bother building. If you aren't familiar with how UNIX works and/or want to learn more, then these ports packages are downright dangerous. At best, they will prevent you from learning how to build software on your own and force you to become dependent on the port package. At worst, they will make changes to your system that you don't understand and, when something goes wrong, you can't fix because you never learned how.
Bash is a particularly good example. A couple of months ago someone posted a question about why Bash wasn't working the way they expected. The cause was the old MacOS X version of Bash and the old, funky MacOS X filesystem. I downloaded and built a newer bash in, literally, 2 minutes and verified that the bug no longer existed in the new version. The original poster, however, tried using Bash from MacPorts and still had the bug. Read the whole sorry tale if you can stomach it: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12523273
The moral of the story is that, yes - either MacPorts or Fink will take care of fetching the code, patching it, compiling, and keeping track of dependencies. Sometimes that is a good thing, and sometimes not. I can assure you that very, very few of these open-source packages were designed for people who don't know how the process works underneath. If you want to use them to manage dependences and save time and are confident you understand shells, environment variables, and dynamic libraries, then by all means do so.
