Downloads take to long, had to return it.

Well I was really hoping that my new TV would allow me to not have to rent movies from Com?????ast, But, i went online (via TV) and rented and HD movie. 5 hours later, it was at 23% downloaded and what is odd is that I have rather fast broadband. Anyway, I have no idea what make me think that I could actually see the movie right after I rented it. Well perhaps I'll just save the money and wait for a MBP refresh.

Unfortunately I see both sides of this issue. I wish I could view the movie sooner but at the same time I want high quality audio and video. I guess in most cases the two can't go together,
I just rented The Brave One and it appears it will take a total of six hours via my T1 (my connection is the bottleneck not their servers). I can live with the download speed but movie renting certainly won't be an impulse purchase.
I do wish they would increase the viewing time from 24 hours to at least 48 hours and also offer a monthly subscription.
This would provide two benefits. Hopefully I could watch more movies at a reduced rate and would allow me to download movies that I think I might want to watch. This way I wouldn't have to wait on the download if I decide I want to watch the movie.
If possible being able to download the movie before purchasing and only paying if you decide to view it would be great (I think DirecTV or someone else is doing something similar). This way I could always have three or four movies ready for viewing. Just like tonight if we could have sat down and watched a movie they would have gotten an additional rental. One my wife wanted to watch plus the one I was willing to wait on.
It's still early in the online movie rental game and I'm sure there will be a lot of changes. Hopefully a subscription plan (perhaps two or three) and pre-purchase downloading will get a turn at bat.

I am using the free version of AVG security and read the instructions in the Mozilla help Re: Firewalls, changing the AVG settings removing Mozilla and then adding it back in. However I checked for updates on AVG none were available and the instructions Mozilla has are for a version of AVG that I do not have. I am using 8.5 and I think the instructions were for 9.0. At any rate I am stuck, and desperately need to get this figured out! I hope that this is enough information for someone to point me in the right direction.? Your help is be greatly appreciated. My computer also has been taking a long time to find a wireless network, up to several minutes. I often have to have it "scan" for networks several times before it finally picks it up. Is there a solution? This has been going on for many months. Other computers (PCs, iPhone) pick up the signals within a few seconds, but my Powerbook takes several minutes, even over 5 minutes sometimes.

I started downloading a couple of the free videos the other night for Lost and Grey's Anatomy, but I had to quit, because the FAP on my broadband satellite (1.5 Mbps down) kicked in at 500 MB.
The roughly hour long shows were both 980 MB each. For those of us with download limits, I guess we are SOL.

  • HD Download Takes to Long?

Does anyone know why its taking so long for my HD movie to download? It's been over 35 minutes.

There are going to be a lot of people who are downloading video content for the first time as a result of the take 2 update. Like you they're going to wonder "why it's taking so long". HD offerings are a new experience for me, and I was pleased at the speed of the download. Downloads of anything are going to vary depending on your connection, the server it's coming from and the state of the internet in general.
No need to feel your question was a bad one and feel a need for excusing yourself. Lot's of people will be asking the same question in the near future. This thread will, I hope, answer it quickly for those new to downloading video over the internet.

  • Downloading takes too long

My iMac is on wireless internet, (as is my MacBook) and it takes extraordinarily a LONG time to download anything! HOURS! What is the problem? Info: Low available gigs, 5 years old, 1G RAM. Thanks for your help!

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

Hi, original poster here. I did not realize this would generate more discussion so I never checked back. I still had my warranty, so I took it to the store and got it repaired. The original problem I had was a screen with this icon flashing when I attempted to boot it up:
When I took it to the store, they told me that my computer was unable to communicate with the hard drive. I had this same problem three times in two months where this screen reappeared. Each time I went back to the store and they said the cause was different, but they were all hardware issues that physically made it impossible to communicate with the hard drive. After the third time, they simply replaced my laptop and I haven't had the same problem.
So in short: The reason you can't reinstall or move anything when you encounter this screen appears to be because nothing can communicate with the hard drive in the first place. You can't reach the disk or anything on it. So I don't believe it's possible to do anything besides take it to a physical store and have it fixed.

I checked all of the steps in #D2 of the Troubleshooting Guide.
One other thing thing you might try, is a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on your internal HD. That will not take anything like 40 hours! If it reports problems, you'll have to boot from your Install disc and use it's copy of DU to repair it. Post back if you need to do this but aren't sure how.
I think it's very fishy that Repair Disk took 40 hours -- it seems like any operation that touches the hard drive on the Time Capsule takes a long time. Maybe the hard drive is having problems? What sort of problems could a drive have that would make everything VERY slow, but still successful?
Try connecting via an Ethernet cable; see what effect that has. Everything should be faster, of course, but not wildly. Just as an example, I'm doing backups to a USB hard drive via my Airport Extreme, about 15 feet from my iMac. When I first started that way, I did a full backup via Ethernet (about 21 gb/hour), then erased it and ran again wirelessly (about 12 gb/hour).
Even 5 feet apart, you may have some sort of interference or other communications problem; if Ethernet is many times faster, then you may need to have your TC and/or wireless card examined.

  • How long does Lion update not download take?

Download was quick, install not so much. Ive had blue screen with spinning circle for 1 1/2 hours? I have new 27 inch i5, duo core with 1 TB. How long should this take? Ive never had an update take this long? Do I need to do something to move it along or restart?

This endednup being the Server download timing out. I rebooted the iMac and restarted the download. 30 mins for it to run the update.

I did what was suggested above (closing all apps and then resetting the iPad). Then I tried to download the movie the Smurfs (for my kid ofcourse!). It's 3.4 GB. In the first hour I have downloaded 1 GB. So it looks like it's going to take at least 3.5 hours to download a movie.  Does this seem correct? My speed is 10 mbps.
Sems a little high but not unreasonable.  Figure that a true 10Mbps would take almost exactly an hour for 3.4GB.  Your 10Mbps rate is the rate to the ISP, which is the absolute best that you can hope for.  Maneuvering data through the many switches in the Internet probably cuts that in half, which would mean two hours.  However, that means absolutely nothing because the weak link in the chain is the rate that the server can send the data.  Consider that we just had a major holiday with many children expecting many movies.  It wouldn't surprise me if the server can send only 2 or 3Mbps per subscriber.
By the way, I do not agree that closing apps and resetting the iPad makes the slightest bit of difference.
My theoretical rate is a tad shy of 5Mbps.  As best I can recall, movies take several hours to download.  My routine is to start the download as I'm going to sleep.  The movie is then available the next day.  No fuss, no bother.

  • Why does it take so long to download software like Adobe to a Mac laptop

I just recently bought a MacBook Pro and I am installing Adobe Reader and it is taking sooooo long to install.  I have been installing since 8:30 pm and its now 10:27 and its only up to 42%.  Why does it taking so long?  Also I have downloading other software and it took forever as well.  Why does it take son long to download software to the Mac?

    Something is obviously wrong.
Stop the download and take the machine back to Apple as you have 90 days free support.
They will test the machine to see if it's a hardware issue or a problem with the Mac itself.
If they say it's fine and it surfs/downloads fast on their connections, then it's likely something wrong with your home network or router.
Did you by any chance change your DNS settings in Network?
This could be the problem, delete what you entered and reboot the machine, the ISP's default DNS settings will return.
To OpenDNS? On the router? Are you using your own router of it someone managing it for you?
Are you over 21 and can you legally surf for adult sites? If some sort of filtering is on, this could be the cause.
OpenDNS doesn't have servers everywhere, so it causes certain downloads from Akamai servers to come from a lot farther away than your ISP servers.
Have you run Internet speed tests? Using other machines on your network are they fast?
Is your router or modem old? Did you power them off, wait 30 seconds and power them back on?
It's rather a lot to try to figure out network issues, you may have to call in a local professional.

  • Why does it take so long to download a saved movie from the cloud

Why does it take so long to download a saved movie from the cloud

Hi first off if your running  fcp 7 with compressor 3.5 and fcp x and compressor 4 on the same drive you may run into problems
as you now have a mix up between Qmasters  which caused me lots of problems when i did any back ground Rendering via compressor of FCP-X
i had to completly remove compressor 3.5 and compressor 4 then put compressor 4 back on again  as the shared rendering out of FCP-X seems to loose the plot with both versions on the same on the same drive there is an app
    Here
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
which you can get allows you to get rid of certain bits of FCS and FCP-X correctly as you may know deleting the app is,nt the whole story as you need to remove the pref etc as well
but its really clearing out every thing to do with qmaster thats is the thing here thats what causes all the issues
really you should follow apple install instructions for FCP -X install ( and put it on separate volumes ) and i know they say there is a way to get every thing working on the same drive ...but it did,nt work for me like you i had massive render times and that 3x crash error
    any way
once i had remove done my remove C3.5 ,C4 and reinstall C4 only it worked straight away from FCP-X using all the cores on my machine
get some thing like istats or run activity monitor to make sure Fcp-x is using all your cores to render and you can actually see if its doing anything at all instead of waiting 5 hours for an error
if you want to use multi core in compressor 4 you have to go into the new apple qmaster tab  and setup up a quick cluster etc
On another note i alway use Optimized media when doing the import as while you editing its back ground render every thing into pro res making it a much nice codec to compress down to H264 which you need for the ATV
i hope that helps a bit ,some else may have a better solution but worked for me
    thanks

  • Does movie download normally take a long time?

Trying to download a movie but it take a long time (been 8 hours), not sure if it the wifi speed. Any insight?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
