Downloads to network storage fail

Hi,
I have recently bought a ReadyNAS Duo with 2 x 1TB discs and have successfully transfered all my crap onto the drive. Everything seems to work except downloading stuff from iTunes store. I have had three errors (-39, -50 and -1401) - the downloads have failed over a wired connection (100 mbps), and wireless N and G connections. They files get about 5MB into download and then trip out with the above errors. Anyone come across this? I can't find any info on it...
Cheers
Dan

Anyone?
I have managed one download in about 200 attempts of various files - I am about to give up though...

  • Report not being written to network storage

    Hello again everybody,
My application provides the user with "on demand" report displays, which, after much mucking around are now working reliably (again).  The last thing the application does is create a set of CSV files and write a set of reports to a couple of network storage locations.  My problem is that one of the reports never shows up in its network folder.  Or any network folder as far as I can tell.
When I request the "on demand" version of the report, it's displayed onscreen correctly via a form using the Crystal Reports Viewer control.  When the application creates it, it's MIA.
The other six reports in the various network locations are all present and accounted for.  I've tried to debug this by displaying status message boxes, and the information they show me is correct (report pathnames, destination pathnames, report file names, parameters, database connections, etc).  I have try/catch structures in every subroutine and function and log errors to a DB table, but never receive any errors; at runtime or in the database table.
The report also works fine via the CR IDE.
One final brain teaser - the application works perfectly in my development environment, both in Debug mode and when the application has been built.  The problem shows up when I move to a Test environment.  I repeat: the other reports are generated without fail...

    An interesting issue...
The utility [Process Monitor|http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx] may be quite useful here.
Make sure you establish a filter for your process as procmon like to create large log files. Once you have a log, search it for the report name and see what is happening to it.

  • Adding a network storage link to a wireless system

Please bear with me...I'm a neophyte about this stuff...
We use a linksys WRT54G wireless router in our home. We use that same router for some work-related stuff. In an attempt to help us better share files - and also access files from afar - someone gave us a Linksys NSLU2 Network Storage Link. I plugged a simple jump drive into the back of the NSLU2 for storage
It's my understanding that I should be able to hook the NSLU2 up to the wireless router and access the files on that jump drive, both from home and from the web. But the NSLU2 came without instructions (it was just donated by a friend) and I don't know how to make it work. So far, all I've done is plug the jump drive into the back of the NSLU2, plug the NSLU2 into the wall, and connect the NSLU2 to the Wireless router (WRT54G) using an ethernet cable and hooking it into the #2 slot on the back of the router.
Does anyone know what steps I need to take so that computers at my house can access it? And what I need to do to access it remotely?
    Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

There are several PDF documents (manuals, how-to's) and some ZIP (compressed ) files -- likely the install software. one of those zips is over 85MB, so it's probably the software that's on the disk.

  • How do i use my time capsule as a network storage

I have a macbook pro a windows pc and two windows laptops plus an ipad and three other tablets and I want to be able to use my TC as a network storage so that I can save most of my files on it and save disk space on each of my devices plus also make all of my files available via the TC to all of my devices.

Yes, you can do it.. the question is should you do it.. My answer to that is NO.. the TC is not a NAS. It is a basic router with a hard disk in it for wireless Time Machine backups. (If you have a desktop it is faster using a USB plugged in. cheaper and far more reliable).
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
    8. In the case of Windows it will have the standard FAT32 4GB file size issue. Even though the disk is not formatted FAT32, it is shared to the Windows computer as if it is.

  • Network storage drive...where can I learn about these?

I have so many questions, and frankly, the answers I've seen looking (briefly, admittedly) around these threads scare me.  Gee, Wally, what ever happened to Apple as the computer you didn't have to know computer programming to use?
Now, before you all get your panties in a bunch telling me that I'm responsible for knowing how to use my hardware, I know...and I do want to know.
So what I want to know now is how can I learn about the various types of "shares", and what they mean for hooking up a network drive for backup, etc.
I have a WD 1TB drive which I believe uses "SMB", whatever that is.  It's got two folders on it currently, "Public" which I can access, and "WD Backup", which I can't.  I also can't seem to use it as a Time Machine drive, which is what I want to do with it.  And, or course, I can't re-format it, which I'd love to do as my wife hates the folder designations on it, and would like to have one folder called "iMac Backup" on it.
Answers which don't involve Terminal will get extra points, but I've dealt with Terminal before, so take your best shot.  And ask for clarification if you need it.  Thanks.

Unfortunately, networking and file-sharing aren't quite so simple in part because there's decades of history and dozens of companies involved in getting it into the current state. If you want dead-simple, you can get an Apple Time Capsule or AirPort with an external drive and be done with it. However, if you really want the most from network storage, you'll probably want to read up...
WD make a number of drive, some network-attached, some not. We'll assume that you have one of their basic consumer network-attached drives.
"SMB" stands for "Server Message Block" protocol and it was the local area network file-sharing protocol developed for Windows for Workgroups circa 1992 (it was later renamed CIFS - Common Internet File System - by Microsoft in 1996 because of the rising popularity of the Internet, despite the difficulty in getting it to work in anything but a small local network). SMB/CIFS is still widely used today for Microsoft Windows networks, though much of the equipment that serves those files are built on Linux or FreeBSD and not Windows.
Access to shares on an SMB server (such as your hard disk) is controlled through a configuration utility provided with the drive or via a web application built into the device (that you access through your browser). Consult your manual. Generally speaking, however, SMB servers offer different ways of identifying whether or not you can access a share: 1) based on the computer connecting (in which case, everyone is considered the same user), or 2) based on a username/password combo. Generally a server will only operate in one mode. Shared directories can also allow or deny "guest" access (access without a password). All of this should be configurable through the drive utility or web application which you access with your web browser. Generally, an SMB server can only operate in one mode.
It sounds like the Public directory is configured to allow guest access, and I'm guessing that "WD Backup" is a share that's password-protected and intended to be used with Western-Digital's own software of the same name. You should be able to add and create new directories as necessary through the provided utility or the web interface.
You are correct, you cannot use Time Machine with an SMB file-sharing service. Time Machine will require AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) or NFS (Network File System) support. Western-Digital only has 3 network drives that support AFP and Time Machine: My Book Live, MyBook World, and WD ShareSpace. OS X also has some basic requirements about the performance and capabilities of network storage in order to use it with Time Machine, so you really want to look for drives that state up front that you can use Time Machine with them (for example, WD World Edition: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/docs/en/appletimemachine.pdf )
I'm not sure why you can't reformat the drive. This is supported on all WD products (though, if you've moved a bunch of data to it already, perhaps it would be a hassle).
You can do backups of your Mac over SMB, but it's complicated by the fact that SMB is quite old and isn't capable of storing information about the file permissions, ownership, etc. It will be reliable for data files, but not for applications, etc. There's a work-around, of course. You can create a disk image on the SMB share using Disk Utility (make sure you create an HFS+ image) and backup to that. If you go that route, I would suggest either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to perform your backups. They are true backup tools, not versioning tools like Time Machine.

  • Network drives fail (drives used to share databases among multiple computers).

I am using databases on multiple computers to store test results for a production line. The computers share info from thier databases with each other using dsn's made with the ODBC Windows XP Admin Tool (Control Panel). This works well most of the time but occasionally one of the network drives fails - I have to disconnect and then use ODBC to make a new connection (a new dsn). Why are the network drives failing? Should I use somenthing else that is more reliable? datasocket? Shared Variable? [email protected]

    Gary MavSysInc,
When you say that your program fails, are you referring to the same thing as your LabVIEW Application that is reterieving data? If so, what do you mean by it fails? Is there an error message? Does it Crash? What happens when it "fails"?

Firstly, I can't open iPhoto on my macbook as of a few days and could it have anything to do with a problem I have updating my iPhone's software as I've downloaded extra iCloud storage but I still can't get the iPhone to recognise the space for software

No. With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

the printer works fine when I install it on the local usb port of the laptop

DO I have to resinstall it as a network printer?
DO I have to resinstall device drivers if I already installed it as a usb printer for the local port?
Can I use the scan/fax functions if I do it right?

  • Failover Cluster Network Name Failed and Can't be Repaired

I have an issue that seem to be a different problem than any others have encountered.
I've scoured everything I can find and nothing has fixed my problem.
The problem starts with the common problem of the cluster network name failing on my 2 node server 2012 file server cluster.  The computer object was still in AD and appeared to be fine so it was not the common problem of the object
getting deleted somehow.  At the time, there was no other object with that name in the recycling bin, so I don't think it was mistakenly deleted and quickly recreated to cover any tracks, so to speak.
Following one guide, I tried to find the registry key that corresponded with the GUID of the object, but neither node in the cluster had it in its registry (which may be part of the problem).
Since it was in the failed state, I tried to do the repair on the object to no avail.
We run a "locked down" DC environment so all computer objects have to be pre-provisioned.  They were all pre-provisioned successfully and successfully assigned during cluster creation.  The cluster was running with no issues for a month
or so before this problem came up.
When I do a repair on the object while taking diagnostic logs the following 4609 error appears:
The action 'Repair' did not complete. - System.ApplicationException: An error occurred resetting the password for 'Cluster Name'. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Unknown error (0x80005000)
There appears to be a corresponding 4771 error with a failure code 0x18 that comes from the security log of the DC that states there was a Kerberos pre-authentication failure for the cluster network name object (Domain\Clustername$)
I believe this is what is causing the repair failure.  All the information I found related to security error 4771 was either a bad credentials given for a user account or the fix was to reconnect the computer to the domain.  I can't seem to find
a way to do this with the cluster network name.  If there's a way please let me know.
I've tried a number of things, like resetting the object, disabling it, deleting and creating a new object with the same name, deleting that new object and recovering the original, etc...
Can anyone shed some light on what is going on and hopefully how to fix it other than rebuilding the cluster?  I'm quite close to just tearing it down and building it back up but am hesitant because this cluster in currently in production...
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi,
I don’t find out the similar issue with yours, base on my experience, the 4096 error
often caused by the CSV disk issue, and the 0x80005000 error some time caused by the repetitive computer object in OU. Please check the above related part or run the validate test then post the error information.
Although I do have a CSV, there doesn't seem to be any problems with it and it was running just fine for a month or so before the problem started.  I double checked and there is no duplicate computer objects, maybe I don't understand what you mean by
    repetitive, could you explain further?
The cluster validates successfully with a few warnings:
    Validating cluster resource Name: DT-FileCluster.
This resource is marked with a state of 'Failed' instead of
'Online'. This failed state indicates that the resource had a problem either
coming online or had a failure while it was online. The event logs and cluster
logs may have information that is helpful in identifying the cause of the
    failure.
    - This is because the cluster name is in the failed state
Validating the service principal names for Name:
    DT-FileCluster.
The network name Name: DT-FileCluster does not have a valid
value for the read-only property 'ObjectGUID'. To validate the service principal
name the read-only private property 'ObjectGuid' must have a valid value. To
correct this issue make sure that the network name has been brought online at
least once. If this does not correct this issue you will need to delete the
    network name and re-create it.
    - This is definitely related to the problem and the GUID probably got removed when we attempted a fix by resetting the object and trying the repair from the failover cluster manager.
The user running validate, does not have permissions to create
computer objects in the 'ad.unlv.edu' domain.
    - This is correct, we run a restricted domain.  I have a delegated OU that I can pre-provision accounts in.  The account was pro-provisioned successfully and was at one point setup and working just fine.
There are no other errors nor warnings.

  • I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device

I already have a hard drive connected to my airport extreme, and ws wondering if i could use it as a network storage device. If so would I have to format it with two partitions , one for time machine and the other for network storage. Aprreciate any advice

If you have the hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme....it is a network storage device.
One issue that you may want to think about is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a hard drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme.
In spite of this, some users who try this are able to make it work. Others have some limited success and some have no success.
It's not supported....so there will be no help from Apple in the event of problems.
If you decide to proceed with this, make sure that the partition for Time Machine backups is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as other formats will not work with Time Machine.
Having a secondary backup plan would also be something that you might want to consider.

  • Remote Speaker (AirTunes) Error - "the network connection failed"

I am getting a strange error message when I try to stream music through an AirTunes remote speaker. iTunes tells me this:
*An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "NN". The network connection failed.*
I can't say what has changed for this error to occur. Last time I used the system it worked fine, now it doesn't. I do know I have upgraded iTunes a couple of times since, though.
I am connecting to an 802.11g AirPort Express running firmware version 6.3.
Both our computers (MacBook & MacBook Pro) run Mac OS version 10.5.8.
In my system, the AirPort Express functions solely as a wireless speaker client, as the WLAN network itself is based around an 802.11n AirPort Extreme.
The AP shows a green light, and reports no problems in AP Utility.
When I change the device's "iTunes Speaker Password" setting in AP Utility, iTunes in both our computers immediately reflect the change, so apparently the various parts in the system do speak to one another just fine. They just can't transmit music, for some reason...
Anyone have any idea what might be going on, here?

I have a similar problem. I use AE(g) with a Powerbook G4 and always get this error, which kind of bugs me, since all the settings appear to be correct. Unlike you though, I didn't make it work, not a single time — closing lid, opening and closing iTunes, resetting AE, yet no luck. Tried it all only with current versions of software.
However, the AE does sense when I unplug the speakers, since it first says "no speakers found", and then "the network connection failed". Strange is that the error has no number, nor does Console provide any clues. Sometimes it is pretty annoying when OS X just says "error". What error, where, why... Feels like good ol' windows times.
