Downsampling pdf on the mac...?!

my butt is dragging on this issue and I feel like asking pdf for my butt back.
i am using Preview, Aperture, and Pages - among other things and I need to get a submission with images uploaded somewhere so that it is under 2 MB. I finally figured out that I need to run a File > Reduce File Size when in Pages to get my images to only take up as much space as their /actual/ size and not the size that I brought them in at. This is nice to know after messing with it on and off for about a year and a half.
However - can someone PLEASE help me find out how to do this in Preview or in Aperture? In the former case I want to print out a series of images as an "image-per-page" PDF and in the latter case I need to print out a CONTACT SHEET with Thumbnails.
And I can't figure out how to get either of these out at less than 8 - 16 MB which is wh-aaaaaaay too big.
Is there a "pdf downsample" utility? Why is printing such a colossal you know what?
Help please on either of these? I've not made any progress on the other sections of the forum.

i think i might have 50 GB of pdf's on my hard drive that I need to convert. I wonder if there is a utility out there...
anyway, can I please ask you for some advice if I needed to get something down further? is there some way to run the quartz filter (interesting name...) again in some way or to reduce these some other way?
also, does anyone happen to know if I can find out how large any particular image is in this document so if I need to take off some images to make a size limit I can do this? or do all of the images take up the same amount once you have Reduced their size with the quartz filter...?

Make a PDF with a Mac, NOT using Mac PDF maker

I am suffering from blurry text when making a PDF in Mac OS 10.6 (using "Save as PDF" in the Mac printing dialogue).
The software company has confirmed the problem. They suggested using CutePDF to make a PDF because it does a better job. CutePDF is Windows only.

Also, could it be a problem with the software you are using (you didn't mention what it is?)
It is ViaCAD 2D. My text is razor-sharp when viewed from within ViaCAD. However, when I make a PDF of my drawing using, File > Print > Print PDF my text comes out blurry.

"This is an old and contentious issue that appears to effect some Mac users and not others.
The only work around I have found is to print to EPS (Postscript) in the print dialog, and then convert the EPS to PDF in Preview. Sadly the EPS output from the print dialog is also broken in that it will not support anything larger than 8.5 X 11, so that will not work for you.
The other work around might be to try and export the whole drawing to Illustrator using the File / Export dialog, but again that is also sometimes buggy for some people. The only good news is that the output that appears blurry on your Mac will probably look fine on a PC, or even another Mac as this does appear to be a very system dependent bug (which is why it never gets fixed)."

Im creating web pages from the whole site so creating a large document, so wondered where these fiels are stored on the mac so I can delete when finished as dont want to clog up the hard drive.

How can I annotate a PDF on a Mac, and search by the annotations in Dropbox on iOS?

So, I have a handwritten journal, and I scanned it. Now it's a 45 page PDF. I want to annotate the PDF on my Mac (or my iPad), dump the file in Dropbox, and then be able to search by the annotations via an iOS device. So if I annotate a page as "Meeting with Nick - October 10, 2013", I want to be able to search (within Dropbox on an iOS device) and find that page later. I want to be able to search for "Nick" and it will bring up that page, and any other page where I annotated with the word Nick.
Whew. Make sense? I'm hoping to avoid Adobe Acrobat Pro, if possible. Annotations that I make in Preview don't seem to show up when I view the PDF in Dropbox. Got any suggestions?

Why is the text not the visible in the protected PDF opened on Mac?

Long story short:
I've created a document in Microsoft Word 2010 and saved it as PDF. With the .pdf open now in Acrobat Reader 9.4.1 I have enabled the protection over the .pdf file by only allowing Printing and saved the protected .pdf. All of these actions are made on Windows 7 machine. Now when trying to open the protected .pdf on Mac (with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and Preview) the .pdf opened only shows the lines and bullets but not the text.
Why is the text not visible in the protected PDF opened on Mac?
(is this bug or a "feature"?)
Note: the protected .pdf looks good on Windows 7 and it works on Mac if the .pdf has no protection.

A. What application are you using to add the protection? Reader cannot add any file security and I don't think the PDF feature of Word will either.
B. Mac Preview has issues with PDF standards so there may be some features that you will experience issues with that have no workarounds.
C. Have you checked the file after adding security to see if all fonts are embedded?

The 'Winmail.dat' problem has been extensively covered in these forums, I would search for that (a Google search works well) and unfortunately I have not seen the pdf print problem before, but assuming the software is current and functions normally (other than the pdf print problem) I have no suggestion other than the obvious (but time consuming) re-installation of Office.

When I convert a doc with hyperlinks into a PDF on a Mac links in the PDF don't work

Hey guys, please advise how to make a PDF on a Mac so that hyperlinks from the original file remain active and working in the PDF document? The links which look like a web address (http://www....) are converted correctly and open fine, but when a hyperlink is tied up to some piece of text (e.g., Watch on Youtube - and you can click on this phrase and the video opens) this link in a PDF file does not work, although it does in the original Word/PPT document.
When I make a PDF on a PC everything's fine: I can click on a link in the PDF and the website opens. But when I make the same operation on a Mac the links do not work...

There have been some methods posted by MAC users to address this issue. The MAC does not have the PDF Maker option that is available for the PC and so extra steps are needed. Sorry, but I do not know the process but would just suggest that you search the forum.

No pdf printer in mac - so No pdf printer available in 'virtual machine' on the mac-any suggestions?

I am running Mac OS X version 10.6.2 and I installed CS4 on the laptop. I have Acrobat 9 Pro - and no pdf 'printer' due to Mac's new operating system. Unfortunately, I also have a virtual machine on my laptop running Windows XP (with VMWare Fusion). I need the 'pdf printer' in my virtual machine to create pdf's from my Windows programs. When I bought the Mac version of CS4 (including Acrobat) I didn't know the 'printer' wasn't included and I can't see buying another Acrobat for Windows....does anyone have any suggestions for installing the pdf printer so my virtual machine has access to the printer?

Hey, guys! be careful, there's a sneaky catch with this "no-pdf-printer" thing.
The warning, concerns mostly the pros (publishers, editors, typographers....) who are used in CMYK chromatic gamut.
The catch is this: you get a CMYK archive, all right, but the color tone IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the one you were used to get with the old good method. That's because, when you choose the "save as adobe pdf" option, initially you get an RGB CONVENTIONAL arch (check the "colors" tag: there 's no CONVENTIONAL CMYK option available). Of course, if you choose to Distill it so that your final arch is a PDF CMYK, what you finally get IS a CMYK archive, BUT: THE COLOR TONE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT! The Reds are pretty much down, and there's a green-ish cast upon it.
What you can do (and this could be an answer to the dear friend with the difficult onscreen name) is this:
You can install a virtual PPD PRINTER (an LPD). If you Google "virtual ppd printer for OS 10.6" you get the directions, DIRECTLY from Adobe (anyhow, the link is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404931.html).
And... VOI LA! You can use this (choosing as a PPD Device the "GENERAL IMAGESETTER") in order to make things the good old way (print it as a PS and after DISTILL it enjoyably!!!).
I wonder, why Apple want to make our lives difficult, pretending the same moment that it only makes them easier...

How to show the pdf from the iPad in the new iBooks on the Mac Book Pro?

I have several books in PDF format on my iPad 4 but for some reason they persistently REFUSE to appear in the iBooks on my Mac book Pro (haven't checked the iPhones). The new iBooks brags that we can ontinue reading our books where we left from one device to the other, and since most of my interesting books are in PDF, how can I access this feature? What if I create a book with a iBook creator, will it show?

I figured it out (for me anyway) for syncing via USB or WiFi.
My PDFs in iBooks Mac weren't showing up in iBooks iOS & this is how I fixed it - it's syncing seamlessly now
I went to iTunes for Mac
Clicked on my device e.g. iPad
Clicked on 'Books' from along the menu that says 'Summary - Apps - Tones' etc.
Ticked the 'Sync Books' checkbox
Selected the 'All books' button, making sure that under the menu ('Books') I had selected 'Books and PDF files'
And then pressed the sync button at the bottom right of iTunes. It worked.
It's a 'set it and forget it solution' - after doing this I no longer need to interact with iTunes for syncing PDFs & books. Even when I rename collections on iBooks Mac, it transfers seamlessly across to iBooks on my iPad/iPhone via Wi-Fi.
Hope that helps - it certainly wasn't obvious to me.

FF4 needs to display PDF files inline on the Mac, like Safari.

Without support for viewing / controlling PDF files within Firefox 4.0 on the Mac, I simply can't use it. This disappoints me, the people at Firefox should have made this an absolute requirement before launch. The really infuriating thing is, I really like the changes in Firefox 4 and want to use it. For future reference here is a short list if absolute MUST HAVES ... JavaScript, Java, Flash, PDF.

But it should be offering your the option to use the plug-in for free if for private or educational use. There should be a box or something in the dialog window to tick to state that education/private is your intended use. (It has been many years since seeing that dialog window, so I forget exactly how it looks.) After answering that question, from that point onward it should not bother you about registration anymore.

My Mac won't print a pdf from the web

My iMac will not print any pdf from the web. The printer (an ho Photosmart plus) will only print a blank shet of paper.

Try saving the file then, then open Preview and open the file and try printing again. If if the quality is still bad then it's the file itself.

How do I install snow leopard from the email/pdf Apple sent me if I dont have the Mac App store?

The instructions say I have to redeem it from the Mac App Store, but since you have to have Snow Leopard or higher to get the Mac App Store, I don't know how to redeem my purchase....please help.

You have half of the equation. Buy Snow Leopard and when the DVD arrives you use it to upgrade your Leopard system or erase the drive and install a clean copy of Snow Leopard. If you decide to do the former then be sure you use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you choose the latter do the following:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Click on the Featured icon in the toolbar. On the right below Quick Links you will see the Redeem link. Click on it to redeem Mountain Lion.

Unable to read pdfs from the web on my mac

i've read all the advice about re-installing Adobe Flash (and deleting past versions) and have followed the advice (and restarted my computer) but to no avail. When I try to open a pdf from a website I only get a black screen. Any advice?

Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
