DP - HDMI Adapter - 1080 Plasma; Vid, but no Audio

DisplayPort -> HDMI Adapter -> 1080 HD Plasma; Crystal Clear Vid, but no Audio
Computer: HP EliteBook 8540w (Windows 7 Professional)
Television: Hitachi Ultravision (Plasma, 1080p, at least 50", built-in speakers)
Video Card: NVIDIA Quadro FX 880m
Driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-257.21-whql-driver.html
My laptop doesn't have an HDMI port, so I purchased an adapter on Amazon.  The adapter says that it supports conversion from Display Port 1.1 to HDMI.  It's basically a dongle sticking out the side of my laptop.  From the adapter, I have a 6 ft. HDMI to HDMI cable connecting to a HDMI port on the television.
PROBLEM:
I can get a beautiful display, but the audio will NOT come out of the television speakers.
Helpful info:
- From what I've been reading, the graphics card is supposed to pass the audio to the television, but my only audio output option is for my laptop's internal speakers.
- Amazon reviews for my DisplayPort -> HDMI converter report that some users received audio output from their televisions immediately after connection.
- NVIDIA says that their should be an option in the "NVIDIA Control Panel" that says "Set Up Digital Audio," but there aren't any audio settings available in the control panel for me ti tamper with.
- Despite the devices being hot-swappable, I've done a series of power downs and boot-ups while connected to see if an audio connection could be established.
- I can achieve audio output with the use of a Y-cable from my headphone jack, but I would HEAVILY prefer it through the use of my DisplayPort.
I'm almost positive that it's either a problem with the television (it is about 3-years old), or the graphics card and its drivers. (Which, according to NVIDIA, supports audio transmition to HDMI with the use of an adapter.)
Any and all help is appreciated [:

i have the same problem. not the tv problem, cuz when i plug in other hdmi devices, the sound works fine.
i wonder if this dp port even has sound. if i was to purchase the dp cable to hdmi would it have the audio ? maybe its only the adapto that has no audio
Hello lanalee222.  My first thought also concerned whether or not the Display Port even supports audio-out.  So, I did a little research.  The FAQ on their page states that Display Port itself does support audio but when using display port to HDMI it may have issues.  However, it says that this has to be enabled by the manufactorer so I'll need to check for you.
What is the product/model number of your notebook and what operating system are you running?

If you have the the video drivers installed for your notebook's chipset and the discrete video module then you should see something similar to the folowing image. This is on my loaner HP Pavilion dv7-4180ea. When I connect the notebook to my Philips HDTV the operating system switches to HDMI audio after I direct the video to the TV with the function keys on the notebook.

I can watch videos streamed from my PC to my IPad 1 on the iPad screen.
I can watch videos on my TV which are stored on the Ipad using an HDMI adapter.

Your Mac does not have a thunderbolt port, but has a mini display port instead. It will not output sound so you will have to get sound through a aux cable.

  • Will DVI to HDMI adapter on MBP carry both sound and video ?

I have an older Duo Core 3.1 MBP 15". Will the DVI to HDMI adapter carry both the video and audio channels for TV viewing ?
    Thanks,
    RL

DVI does not carry audio but there are adapters that add digital audio DVI to connect to HDMI.

You will also need to convert the optical to coax digital

    and optical Mini-Plug to Toslink

It would be cheaper to use a cable from the computer's audio output to audio input on the TV.

  • IPad 2 worked w/HDMI adapter but screen FLASHED after ten minutes

I bought an HDMI adapter when I bought an iPad 2. We hooked it up and were playing Monopoly on the iPad and watching on a Panasonic plasma TV. After about ten minutes the TV screen started to flicker/flash.
Is anyone else having a similar problem or maybe a solution to this problem?
    Thanks.

Same problem here. iPad 2 + Apple digital AV adapter + 25ft. (thick-gauge) generic HDMI cable + Hitachi 42" HD1080 PlasmaTV. Constant flickering during mirroring and eventually audio disappeared entirely. Identical, but sporadic problem occured when using same setup but iPod Touch 4th gen instead of iPad 2.
Contacted Apple support and they sent me a free replacement AV adapter.
Package arrived in less than 20 hours! Wow! That is FAST!
(actually they goofed and sent me a free iPad 2-specific charging dock instead, but I'm not complaining). One email and a day later, the AV adapter arrived.
Situation improved but only slightly. Now flickering on TV screen is occasional rather than constant. Audio briefly self-mutes randomly also. It seems to be more stable when used in conjunction with the dock. It's much too easy for the AV plug to partially slip out of the input port on the iPad when held on my lap, so standing it in the dock helps to prevent that particular problem. More testing and trouble-shooting is planned.

  • I have always been able to connect my Ipad to the tv with the HDMI adapter but since most recent software update it does not work.  Is it me or has others expeirenced this?

I have tried to stream movies and live TV using my HDMI adapter and cable .  I have always had it work but with the most recent update it no longer will connect.  I hope someone has a good solution.

    It still works for me.
Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

The Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor will only pass video in most cases. You will need to run a separate audio cable along with it. Likely a 3.5mm (male-to-male) cable. Or a 3.5mm (male) to red/white RCA (male) cable. Just depends on what audio input ports your TV has dedicated to the HDMI input.

  • Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter plays video but does not do Audio

Ok I was told by someone at the Apple Store durring my one to one secession that I could get a mini to HDMI cable and the video and audio from my laptop would be displayed on the TV.
This was the cable I was told to get http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0025V2VO0/ref=oxya_ohproduct
Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (female) Cable for Apple Mac
Now it displays the video on the TV but no audio.

Apparently it's the current range of MBP's that's the issue. In theory, the displayport standard supports audio.

  • My Fall 2009 system DVI output to our HDTV doesn't include audio.  Connecting the Macbook headphone output to the TV's RCA plugs works if TV is in AV (PC) mode, but no picture.  DVI to HDMI adapter to TV works fine for picture, but no audio.

My Fall 2009 model Macbook Pro DVI output apparently doesn't include audion.  Adapting DVI to HDMI works with new LG TV, but doesn't provide sound.  Connecting the Macbook headphone output to the TV's RCA jacks give sound with the TV in AV (PC) mode, but no video.  Is there a fix for this?  Search for a DVI to HDMI adapter that includes a plug for the headphone jack comes up empty, so far.

DVI has never included audio, sorry.
There is also no DVI->HDMI adapter including a plug for audio; such thing cannot work without quite a bit of electronic extra effort.
Instead of much bla-bla, why don't you tell the exact TV model, and we'll try to come up with a solution?
BTW, no home theater AV receiver present, correct? Sound to come from the TV, correct?

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.

I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a projector, which has a VGA cable. I bought a VGA to HDMI adapter, but whenever I hook it up, the screen on my macbook just goes black and I can't make it do anything else or even show up on the projector.
My laptop is still on; it just has a black screen that I can't get rid of without shutting down the computer by holding the power button.

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Bought HDMI adapter to play movies from my iPad but it will stop every few minutes, Bought HDMI adapter to play movies from my iPad but it will stop every few minutes

Once I begin to play a movie from my iPad to the TV using the HDMI adapter it will pause and lose sound every few minutes.  I am using the video app and the movie plays fine if not connected.
I have also checked to make sure that everything is connected properly.

Well, I thought it was solved... or at least solved enough to live with. I had originally installed 2.6.31 from testing to try and fix this issue, and it substantially improved, but now it's gotten worse again. At home on a WPA network, it drops maybe once or twice a day. Here on this unencrypted network, it's going out once or twice every half hour. Same error messages as above.
I tried reinstalling, but ended up with the same errors almost right away. This bites!
Anyone have any other ideas to try?
    Thanks,
    Scott
EDIT: I tried rebuilding rt2x00-rt71w-fw from source. PKGBUILD has the incorrect source link. So I actually went to the ralink site, downloaded the (hopefully correct) driver package, unzipped it and copied rt73.bin to /usr/lib/firmware --overwrote the existing copy. I haven't got any errors yet, but it's only been 20 minutes so far. We'll see. I'm not sure if it's the identical rt73.bin that's currently in the repos or if it's different. Forgot to compare the two before I overwrote the old one.
EDIT2: No luck with the different rt73.bin. Also tried the new Ubuntu karmin beta and got the same errors -- and a freeze when I pulled the adapter out when it stopped working.

  • How to connect sound or audio to my tv using hdmi adapter. I tried to connect thru sound settings but my tv is not found.

how to connect sound to my tv set using hdmi adapter. Im using 2009 macbook pro 13". I went to sound settings then output and it shows internal speaker built- in, it wont locate my tv set. pls. help, thanks

You probably can't because it looks like your MacBook Pro is too old to carry audio over HDMI. You will need to run a separate audio cable from the audio out port on the MacBook Pro to the audio in port on the TV.
Check your MacBook Pro model year against the list in this Apple tech note:

  • Dvi to hdmi adapter

I purchased a Dvi to hdmi adapter from the Mac store It works fine on my sons lcd but all I get on my Hitachi 42 inch plasma is a blank screen the display seems to change but no display on the tv

Does your TV's user guide make any reference to connecting a PC to it? It may designate a different input for that purpose, like VGA for instance.
