DPM 2012 R2 and Hyper-V Replication, huge conflict and failure to backup

I have recently created new 2012 R2 servers with DPM 2012 R2 in attempts to upgrade an environment.
When attempting to create Protection Groups for Hyper-V VM, DPM will consistently omit any VM that happens to have Hyper-V Replication enabled, whether that server is the primary VM instance or a replica VM instance.  ALL other Hyper-V VMs are listed,
only those with Replication enabled are omitted.  This happens on both DPM 2012 R2 servers, exactly the same results - all VMs without Hyper-V Replication enabled are listed, none of the VMs with replication enabled are visible in the list.
Obviously we need to be able to backup VMs with Hyper-V replication since replication is only a tiny portion of a DR strategy, it doesn't cover ANY recovery scenario other than the loss of the primary VM - it doesn't allow for restoring any missing or damaged
files or undoing any other changes to the VM.
The DPM 2012 R2 server have the latest update rollup (#4) applied and the protection agents have also been updated.
Looking for some hints since DPM 2012 R2 is supposed to support backing up both the primary and replica VMs, especially when the Hyper-V host if Server 2012 R2.
Might have to use Windows Server Backup or Veeam's free Hyper-V backup since aside from enabling Hyper-V replication to keep a couple snapshots, DPM isn't a viable backup options in combination with Hyper-V replication.

As per the following blog:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2014/04/25/backing-up-of-replica-vms-using-dpm.aspx
you should be able to backup Hyper-V VMs even if they are replica VM.
When you configure DPM to protect both primary and recovery hosts, VM will appear on any of the Servers as it will have the same GUID.
So, protect primarya nd recovery hosts using different DPM or if you want to protect both primary and recovery using same DPM, make sure that you check both servers so as to discover VM.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Roll Up 2: Agent Terminating or Checksum mismatch during backups

    Hi There,
I have dual DPM server deployment. Primary DPM server backs up to disk in my production site and then I have a Secondary DPM server creating replicas to Disk and Tape in my DR site. Both DPM servers are running DPM 2012 R2. I recently installed DPM 2012
R2 Roll Up 2 (Was running Roll up 1 for weeks without issue), careful not to install the bugged version of the update. Everything was running normally and then suddenly about 4 days later some of my resources started failing and became inconsistent on my Secondary
    DPM server.
    Either:
    1. My DPMRA service on my Secondary DPM server terminates with the following Application Log error
Faulting application name: DPMRA.exe, version: 4.2.1235.0, time stamp: 0x536a4419

    2. DPM has detected a checksum mismatch during data transfer over the network (ID: 30087)
I have already removed and deleted from disk the failing resources on the Secondary DPM server and then re-added them to the protection groups, but again either the agent terminates or fails with checksum during replica creation or consistency check. Note
that the Primary DPM server is happy and all the resources are green and backing up successfully numerous times a day.
I suspect that the update 4 days before the issues started might have created this issue. Has anyone had these issues or know of potential ways to fix it?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to rebuild the Secondary DPM server.
    Thanks
    Jacques

    Hi,
Here is an update. I have managed to get a workaround.
If I enforce IPSec with ESP between my primary and secondary DPM server then the agent stops terminating or reporting checksum errors.
Still waiting on someone from the DPM team to give a suggestion here as it seems to be a bug that started after I installed Roll Up 2 for DPM 2012 R2
    Thanks
    Jacques

  • Is there any way to send an album without all the photos attaching and the file being huge? and the file being huge?

Is there any way to send just a link to an album? (vs attaching everything and having a huge file?) Thanks!

    No.
File -> Export and send them to a Folder on the desktop. Then do what you will with them from there.
There is nothing to be gained by installing Picasa if you're using iPhoto.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Hyper-V backup of SQL server VM

    Hello!
I have a question about using DPM 2012 R2 in Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster and backing up Windows 2003 VM, that has SQL 2008 installed.
When i use VM, host level backup with DPM2012 R2, would it trigger a full DB backup on SQL server or not?
Problem is, that we are using SQL (maintanance plans) for backing up databases and doing transaction logs backup.
I want to back up the whole VM, but i want to be sure, that this would not mess up SQL backup inside the VM?
Is it possible, that i wont install DPM agent inside the SQL server VM? But can i then still restore files from the VHD/X or only entire VM?

    Hi,
Apply the following registry entry in the GUEST virtual machine so application logs are not truncated by host level backups.
    Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtualization\VssRequestor
    Name: BackupType
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1
If this registry entry is created and its value is set to 1 , application backup will not be affected by the virtual machine backup operation on the server that is running Hyper-V. If this registry entry does not exist, or if its value is 0 , then host level
backups will truncate logs in the guest.
Yes - you can perform item level recovery for files inside the .vhd by double-clicking the .vhd while browsing to restore the VM.  That will mound the .vhd and allow you to copy files out without having to restore the entire .vhd file.

  • Saved State Backup on Server 2012 R2 and DPM 2012

Hello, Our environment in currently in transition with planned migration to 2012 R2. In the mean time, we have a 5 node 2008 R2 hyper-v cluster with CSV.  We are currently using DPM 2012 for our backup.  I have read multiple postings about child
partition backup and saved state and all that seems to make relative sense.
What I have noticed is that in our existing environment (2008 R2 Hyper-v, DPM 2012) that all 2012 R2 Virtual servers setup in our hyper-v cluster show 'Backup Using Saved State'.  All virtual 2003 - 2008 R2 servers on the same cluster show as 'Backup
    using Child Partition Snapshot'.
So, the question: is this normal and the only way virtual 2012 R2 servers can be backed up in our environment? Or, is there some configuration on the virtual 2012 R2 servers that needs to be done so that the Hyper-v VSS writers show that it can be backed
up using Child Partition Snapshot. (Yes, I viewed the Hyper-V VSS Writer Caption: for each system on all the nodes and no, I am not talking about what is displayed in DPM 2012 since I understand it may not truly reflect the current backup method)

Have you already checked typical reason for DPM doing saved state backup? If not, find them below.
    Also, do your VM have
SCSI controller added? Prior to using Veeam as our primary backup solution, we leveraged DPM and confronted the very same issue. Fortunately, by adding ISCSI controllers to VMs in question we were able to solve the problem.
Conditions when DPM fails to back up Hyper-V virtual machines in an online state
By default, System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) performs a backup of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) in an online state. However, DPM cannot back up a Hyper-V VM in an online state, if one or more of the following
    conditions are true:
Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
The virtual machine has one or more non-NTFS based volumes.
The virtual machine Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline.
The virtual machine is not in a running state.
A ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
An App-V drive is installed on the virtual machine that creates a non-NTFS volume.
These conditions are set by the Hyper-V writer. In such a case, the VM is put in a saved state before a snapshot of host volumes are taken (except when the VM is turned off) for a backup. The Hyper-V writer adds the VM in the following format:
For offline backups: Backup Using Saved State\<VMName>
For online backups: Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\<VMName>
Additional reason if we have less than 300MB free space on a volume in the guest.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

  • SQL Server 2012 express istallation failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication"

I ran SQL Server 2012 express setup as user with administrator privileges and still it's failing to install "Database Engine Service" and "SQL Server Replication".
Any and every ideas on how to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.

Three weeks passed and I am yet to find a fix for the the failed installation of the database engine on sql server 2012 express installation. I have tried various work-around including uninstalling, deleting all the directory paths, and reinstallation. Still
not able to successfully install sql server 2012 express.

  • Surely It cannot be this hard! DPM 2012 R2 with Update rollup 2

I am close to giving up!
New to DPM but very experienced with networking/servers.
I installed DPM 2012 R2 and then installed rollup 2
I launch the DPM console, add some storage and then go to install the agent on a server - it fails
I get the standard message. When I check on the server I tried to install to I can see that the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service was installed and running and listening on port 5719 but there is no DPMRA service.
So I perform a manual installation using the correct version from Rollup 2 on the server to be protected. This goes OK and I return to the DPM server to add the protected server. Made sure services were running on both servers, checkerd RPC, WMI, DCOM settings
and all seems OK but when I try to add the protected server from the DPM console using the attach agent option it fails with error 370.
Followed the top 20 suggestions, configured firewall for all ports on both servers. Tried turning the firewall off and still will not install.
I have also tried using a Hyper-V server, a physical server and none will work which tends to point to an issue with the DPM server.
The thing that puzzles me is that after I perform a manual agent installation on the protected server this seems to knock out the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service which is no longer listed under services wheras DPMRA is running. I expected both services
    to be installed and running.
When I perform a NETSTAT -a after installing the remote agent I can see port 5718 is listening but not port 5719
If I go back a step and try a dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator install via DPM console (as part of adding the protected server) it does install dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator and it listens on port 5719 but the DPMRA agent software is not installed.
I have tried deinstalling both the DPM agent software on the protected server and have even reinstalled DPM 2012 R2 with Rollup 2 with no change
I have verified communications between the servers. Checked the DPM server is in the relevant groups. Am at a complete loss on what to do next - it should not be this hard.
Can someone confirm to me that they expect both the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service running on 5719 and the DPMRA service to be running on 5718 on the protected server which is what I assume but this
    is not happening!
DPM server is a physical box running Server 2012. Protected server is a Physical box running Server 2012 R2. I have also tried with a physical server 2008R2 with the same results. I am not running Server 2003
    prd

After 3 long days trying everything I could think of and following all of the excellent guidance out there ( thanks guys) I have a workaround.
The answer was to make the dpm server computer account a member of the domain admins group.
After I restarted the DPM server I saw that although the protected server account was still in error - the error message changed from 270 to 316.
So I then add the protected server computer account to the domain admins group
After I restarted the computers I could see the magic OK in the status of the DPM console.
As an experiment I removed the protected servers computer account from domain admins and restarted the server. After the restart DPM could no longer communicate with error 316 again.
So I tried adding the DPM server computer account to the protected servers local administrators group but this did not work.
Deeply unhappy with making a computer account a member of domain admin group but it works.
The question is why? There is obviously a security permissions issue that does not affect domain admins.
I am running this on freshly built servers on a simple, single domain.
Microsoft you need to look into this.

  • Dpm 2012 remote administration - windows 7

    HI,
I am doing a POC with DPM 2012 RC.  DPM2012 server has been setup and is working so far. I am trying to connect the DPM console for administration using Remote administration feature installed on my windows 7 machine. I am unable to connect and getting
    the error as:
Unable to connect to <dpm server name with FQDN >(ID:948)
Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer.
I dont see any service being installed on windows 7, am I missing anything or any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Newspleaner,
I did fresh install of windows 7 SP1, then i installed DPM 2012 (RTM) Remote Administration Console.
Everything is working... I could open the console and connect to DPM2012 server with FQDN name.
Communication between Remote Administration Console and DPM server use TCP dynamic port. You should verify that you don't have FW/Router that filtrated TCP Dynamic ports.

  • NIC teaming and Hyper-V switch recommendations in a cluster

    HI,
We’ve recently purchased four HP Gen 8 servers with a total of ten NICS to be used in a Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster
These will be connecting to ISCSI storage so I’ll use two of the NICs for the ISCSI storage connection.
I’m then deciding between to options.
    1. Create one NIC team, one Extensible switch and create VNics for Management, Live Migration and CSV\Cluster - QOS to manage all this traffic. Then connect my VMs to the same switch.
    2. Create two NIC teams, four adapters in each.  Use one team just for Management, Live Migration and CSV\Cluster VNics - QOS to manage all this traffic.
Then the other team will be dedicated just for my VMs.
Is there any benefit to isolating the VMs on their own switch?
Would having two teams allow more flexibility with the teaming
configurations I could use, such as using Switch Independent\Hyper-V Port mode for the VM team? (I do need to read up on the teaming modes a little more)
    Thanks,

I’m not teaming the ISCSI adapters.  These would be configured with MPIO.
    What I want to know,
Create one NIC team, one Extensible switch and create VNics for Management, Live Migration and CSV\Cluster - QOS to manage all this traffic. Then connect
my VMs to the same switch.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/cedward/archive/2014/02/22/hyper-v-2012-r2-network-architectures-series-part-3-of-7-converged-networks-managed-by-scvmm-and-powershell.aspx
What are the disadvantages to having this configuration?
Should RSS be disabled on the NICs in this configuration with DVMQ left enabled?
After reading through this post, I think I’ll need to do this.
However, I’d like to understand this a little more.
I have the option of adding an additional two 10GB NICS.
This would mean I could create another team and Hyper-V switch on top and then dedicate this to my VMs leaving the other team for CSV\Management and Live Migration.
How does this option affect the use of RSS and DVMQ?

  • DPM 2012 table backup

    Dear all,
I have intertied a DPM 2012 server which is perform short (to disk) and long (tape) backups. However the tape backups always seem to fail with various errors / warning. I have noticed that the server has fire streamer and a physical tape drive setup,
I would like to remove fire streamer and also get some granular logon on the errors so that I can perform some analysis.

    Hi,

As far as I know catalyst-daemon and catalyst-hook provide the same module so they are in conflict. The difference is that catalyst-daemon uses a daemon at startup to check for a new kernel and compile a new module when needed. Catalyst-hook does the same thing with a hook.
I picked the daemon method and just answered no to replace with -hook or -generator (catalyst-generator also conflicts with the others). Just choose the one you like.

  • Does DPM 2012 R2 still needs DataSourceGroups.xml and MaxAllowedParallelBackups key when using Hyper-V VSS Software Writer to backup Server 2012 R2 Cluster

    Hi,
Does DPM 2012 R2 still needs DataSourceGroups.xml and MaxAllowedParallelBackups key when using Hyper-V VSS Software Writer to backup Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with CSV's? Can't find a clear answer somewhere.
    Thanx for helping me out.
    DJITS.

    Configure CSV backups
If you are running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 and you’re backing up multiple clusters with DPM, you need to ensure that only one backup uses the same CSV at any one time. To do this, follow the instructions in
    Serialize virtual machine backups.
If you’re using software VSS with Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2, do the following
Serialize virtual machine backups per node
Serialize virtual machine backups per CSV LUN
    Have a nice day !!!
