DPM 2012 R2 fails to back up one of two disks on file server

Good day! I've built a new DPM 2012 R2 server and migrated or re-created jobs from my older 2012 SP1
DPM servers as trying to upgrade them was not working out. The DPM R2 server is running great besides this one issue. The problem is with a file and print server at a remote office. Since it has around 750 GB of user data on it I chose to do manual replica
creation on the data disk, (E:) but created the C:\ drive replica normally, over the WAN. The manual replica creation was successful, and the initial consistency check and recovery point creation worked as expected, however, since then it will not create another
RP or run a CC on the E:\ drive. Recovery points on the C:\ drive are being created properly. When I try to run a CC I get this error: "An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005))" I've
tried to drop protection on the two directories of the E:\ drive (retaining data) and re-create, but that didn't help. I've even done a recovery from the initial RP to verify that it was created properly, and that worked as well.

Open command prompt on target file and print server, change directory to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp> and run below command
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\DPM\Temp>find /i "[0x80070005]"
DPMRACur*.errlog >C:\Errors.txt

• DpmBackup.exe -db in DPM 2012 R2 Fails To Back Up

I have a new installation of System Center DPM 2012 R2 with the most recent updates installed. When I try to back up the SQL Server 2012 database, I get this error: "Error: Backup failed for Server 'MyServer'." The command I'm using
is:
dpmbackup.exe -db -sqlServerName MyServer -instanceName "(LOCAL)" -dpmdbname DPMDB_MyServer. The SQL server instance name is the default MSSQLSERVER and the database name is DPMDB_MyServer.
The firewall is turned off but before that I checked that TCP/IP was set to allow port 1433.I can back up the database using SQL Server Management Studio so it's looks like a permissions problem somewhere. I have another test server configured the same way and
it too gives the error message. Any ideas what's causing this?
After reviewing the Event Viewer, Windows Logs, Application, I find this error (partial listing):
</ExceptionMessage><ExceptionDetails>Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.FailedOperationException: Backup failed for Server 'MyServer'.
---> Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ExecutionFailureException: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open backup device 'c:\users\joe\desktop\dpmdb_myserverl.bak'.
Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
What is Operating System Error 5 (access denied)?
Okay, I figured it out that SQL didn't have permission to write to any folders other than it's own folder system. So this command worked successfully:
PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\bin> dpmbackup.exe -
db -sqlServerName MyServer -instanceName "(LOCAL)" -dpmdbname DPMDB_MYSERVER -targ
etLocation "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA"

hi
If you create a network share with the correct permissions does it work? You getting an access denied error.
I see you say the bottom command worked. Is your question resolved or do you need help still?

• DPM 2012 R2 failing on backup of BMR and System State

We are running DPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012 and I am trying to protect another Windows 2012 Server with a Bare Metal Recovery and system state but it fails on initial synchronization. I get the following error in DPM:
DPM failed to create the backup. If you are backing up only System State, verify if there is enough free space on the protected computer to store the System State backup. On protected computers running Windows Server2008, verify that Windows Server
Backup (WSB) is installed and that it is not performing any other backup or recovery task. (ID 30214 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990ED0)
This is a new server and there is 65.7 GB of 99.9 GB free on the C drive. 131 of 136 GB free on the F drive. The P drive only has 100 MB free of 36.3 GB but that is where the pagefile is located, nothing else is on the P drive.
Would that be a problem or is that irrelevant?
The replica volume is 30 GB and the recovery point volume is 6.06 GB. I tried increasing the replica volume all the way up to 200 GB and the recovery point volume to 30 GB but that didn't matter.
Why is this not working?

Hi,
Try this and troubleshoot any errors along the way.
1) Set up a network share on a remote machine
\\server\bmrshare
2) From an administrative command prompt on the Protected Server you want the BMR backup for, type:
wbadmin.exe start backup -allcritical -backuptarget:\\server\bmrshare
This should show you the list of volumes included in the BMR backup and ask "Do you want to start the backup operation?. - Type
Y to continue..
3) Once completed, see how large the BMR backup is on the remote server, then resize the DPM replica accordingly to accommodate the size of the manual BMR backup.

• DPM 2012 Install Fails, The Database was not Created ID 811

Hi.
I've tried installing DPM on a Standalone Server (SQL + DPM), and get the "Database was not Created" error. I initially tried DPM 2012 R2, and found that there is an issue with Disjoint Namespaces, so went to DPM 2012 SP1, but still getting
the same error.
The Install Account has full access rights (sysadmin) to the DPM SQL Instance, however cannot seem to get it right. The account using to do the install has full Enterprise admin, Domain Admin, Backup Operators & Administrators rights.
When opeining SQL Managemet studio, I can see the database has been created but the setup fails and requires me to revert. Here is the last few lines of the Install Log File, please help I always mark as answer.

Hi,
Access Denied error is usually caused by Antivirus software. Please disable real time scanning on the DPM Server for DPMRA process.
928840 You receive job status failure messages in Data Protection Manager
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;928840
For DPM 2012 the path has changed.
To resolve this problem, configure the antivirus program to exclude real-time monitoring of the Dpmra.exe program on the Data Protection Manager server. By default, the Dpmra.exe file is located in the following folder:
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Bin

• DPM 2012 R2 protecting a SQL 2008 Cluster/Vss Writer problems on SQL Server

Hola,
I am running DPM 2012 R2 rollup 4. My Server OS is 2012 Datacenter. I have a SQL 2008 Active/Passive cluster and MS support has kicked this to the SQL team for review. OK hear we go ..When I run the vssadmin list writer I do see the SQL Writer. Also
says no errors. When I run diskshadow /l c:a.txt from an admin command prompt the output does show the SQL Writer information but under that should display all the meta data for each connection to the database so DPM can expand the SQL database to
be chosen for protection. I am already confused.
I am going to include a snippet from the vssadmin and the diskshadow command:
vssadmin list writers:
Writer name: 'SqlServerWriter'
Writer Id: {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
Writer Instance Id: {8d773b6f-0196-4c34-9943-f258f99c2d9a}
State: [1] Stable
Last error: No error
Diskshadow /l c:a.txt
* WRITER "SqlServerWriter"
- Writer ID   = {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
- Writer instance ID = {8d773b6f-0196-4c34-9943-f258f99c2d9a}
- Supports restore events = TRUE
- Writer restore conditions = VSS_WRE_ALWAYS
- Restore method = VSS_RME_RESTORE_IF_CAN_REPLACE
- Requires reboot after restore = FALSE
- Excluded files:
* WRITER "BITS Writer"
- Writer ID   = {4969d978-be47-48b0-b100-f328f07ac1e0}
- Writer instance ID = {5ad5c4f7-5f68-4c1d-a4fc-92d5ef898881}
- Supports restore events = TRUE
- Writer restore conditions = VSS_WRE_UNDEFINED
- Restore method = VSS_RME_UNDEFINED
- Requires reboot after restore = FALSE
- Excluded files:
- Exclude: Path = C:\Windows\System32, Filespec = bits.log
- Exclude: Path = C:\Windows\System32, Filespec = bits.bak
- Exclude: Path = C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Net
As you can see this did not return the expected results. I should see the meta data for each database. This is why DPM can't list the databases for backup in my 2008 production SQL cluster. Any thoughts? This has not been working for quite sometime. I was
hoping the update to rollup 4 would have fixed the problem. I know this is a SQL problem but has anyone had this experience?
Thanks
Steve J.

Update:
Uninstalled SQL Server instance and downloaded SQL Server 2012 SP1 image from link in error message. It takes you to the download page for the express edition of SQL Server 2012. I downloaded the SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU file and used it to re-install
the SQL Server instance.
Ultimately I had to use the ISO image to upgrade the instance to Standard because the SQL Server Agent will not run under the express edition and caused the DPM install to fail.
The DPM installation then completed successfully and after immediately went to Windows Update and SQL Server 2012 SP2 was installed.
Evidently you cannot start with SP2 until the installation is complete.

• Oracle fails if one of two disks fail

Hi Everyone,
I am new to Oracle RAC and have done a sample setup as per Jeffery Hunters instructions (http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi.html).
Which by the way is an excellent document for us beginners.
When I built the test RAC so that I could do a proof of concept for my bosses I added a second separate disk (ISCSI setup - openfiler2).
With OCFS2 I setup and mounted 2 volumes. (U02 and U03)
ASM has the rest of the disks as (ASM1,VOL1 and ASM2,VOL2)
This way I have an OCRFile and CSSFile on each disk plus ASM mirroring the ORACLE datafiles on each drive. ( I think )
Now my problem is that if a fake a failure of one of my disks the nodes will reboot and I am unable to get the DATABASE back up.
Shouldn't the Cluster stay up and continue running on the one disk.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hi,
CRS is not starting up.
[root@linuxora1 bin]# ./crsctl check crs
Failure 1 contacting CSS daemon
Cannot communicate with CRS
Cannot communicate with EVM
[root@linuxora1 bin]#
I checked the /var/log/messages and see:
May 22 05:30:44 linuxora1 logger: Cluster Ready Services waiting on dependencies. Diagnostics in /tmp/crsctl.5782.
May 22 05:30:50 linuxora1 iscsid[3282]: cannot make connection to 192.168.2.196:3260: No route to host
May 22 05:30:50 linuxora1 iscsid[3282]: Connection to Discovery Address 192.168.2.196 failed
The above would be the case as I have emulated the this disk has failed. I have two iscsi devices, the other being 192.168.2.195. These are mounted to the nodes via OCFS2 as /u02 and /u03. Have an OCRfile on each device - plus 2 CRSfiles on /u02 and a CRSfile on /u03
/u03 is the one that is failed. So I should have one OCRfile and 2CRSfiles available.
192.168.2.195 is mounted as /u02 and it's up and running
192.168.2.196 is mounted as /u03 and it currently turned off to emulate a disk failure.
I checked the diagnostics in /tmp/crsctl.5782 as per messages log and it has the following:
[root@linuxora1 bin]# more /tmp/crsctl.5782
OCR initialization failed accessing OCR device: PROC-26: Error while accessing the physical storage
[root@linuxora1 bin]#
So based on this, my problem is that CRS isn't starting up cause OCFS2 can't mount the failed disk? This would explain why the nodes reboot when I emulate the disk failure?

• DPM 2012 R2 - Failed to clean up data

Hi,
I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.
I've recently been getting an error on one of our backup jobs, I've tried searching around for solutions but no-one seems to have had the exact same issue that I'm experiencing.
The backup job is a shadow copy file backup of a complete volume.
It's been working for the past few weeks but I'm now getting the error below when I try to run a consistency check.
People have reported issues similar which suggest executing the pruneshadowcopiesdpm2010.ps1 which I've tried but this seems to make no difference.
The protection group is short term disk protection with a retention period of 14 days with file recovery points created at 11am, 1.30pm, 3.30pm and 8pm. The job is currently reporting 32 recovery points which leads me to believe it shouldn't need to
clean up any yet anyway.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

RIS,
The access denied can come if there is already a lock on the file( like Antivirus).
Can you let me know what version of DPM2012R2? if you goto about DPM you it will give you exact version 4.x.xxxx.x. You stated you had AV exclusions set
"We do run Sophos Antivirus but it does have exceptions set and the volumes that are being protected do not store any Sophos related data."
I want to ensure all are set from -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757911.aspx - if you can test disabling AV that may help.
Can you check the event logs on DPM server and PS during the failure to see if there is anything else running that may lock the files?
There may also be a "failedfiles.dat" that may due to unsupported files see link below for assistance troubleshooting that -
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f7de60cd-841f-4d22-862e-aaf3723717c7/dpm-could-not-log-files-that-were-skipped-during-backup-to-volumexxxxxfailedfilesdat-id?forum=dataprotectionmanager
How to read failedfiles.dat if there is one -
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dataprotectionmanager/thread/27c48816-dabb-41a0-b800-6e1ac2fc1ed5
Also what is the OS version of the DPM server? Are you doing any dedupe\ODX\Thin provisioning on the protected server?
Ultimately we may need a ticket to determine what is locking out the file during the failure but please let me know the answers to the above and I will see if that helps. Thanks

• DPM 2012 certificate failed (CRL)

Hi,
I need to protect server in untrusted domain (SQL cluster).
Domain A: DPM server
Domain B: Protected servers and Certification Authority
When I run PowerShell command on DPM server, still have error that certificate is not trusted on server (33234).
CA chain in trusted root authority
Certificate in local computer store and trusted. All certificate requirements passed (certutil -store -v my).
Certutil -url http://crlpath OK. I can download CRL with HTTP.
I checked certificate according this article: http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2012/07/23/dpm-certificate-troubleshooting-part-1-general-troubleshooting.aspx
When I open DPM log MSDPMCurr, I can find this:
WARNING Flags = RevocationStatusUnknown, Info = The revocation function was unable to check revocation for the certificate.
WARNING Flags = OfflineRevocation, Info = The revocation function was unable to check revocation because the revocation server was offline.
WARNING The certificate with subject: CN=DPMagent is not trusted
But I can download CRL with success manually. Any idea?
Thanks Jan

• 7.5.2 fails to update on one of two Air port extremes

I have two Airport Extremes and one updated the firmware fine but the other has the airport utility just sitting there searching for the latest firmware version and never updates. THe one that updated fine is the extension unit and the one that will not udpate is the main unit.
Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?

Updated 4 devices with no issues, but I'm not sure how that information would apply to the 1 device you have that is having issues.
If the AirPort Extreme won't take the update...and you want to apply it...my suggestion at this point is to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme to clear out all the old (and possibly corrupted settings) and start over again. There is no assurance that this will help...it's only a suggestion that has worked for me in the past with an update issue.

• DPM 2012 R2 CU4 protecting SQL 2014 AlwaysOn AG with Failover Cluster vs. DR location

Hello!
We have a problem protecting any Database of SQL 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group with SQL Failover Cluster Instance when moved to DR location. Everything is protected using DPM 2012 R2 CU4 from Primary location.
FACTS
- all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2
- all servers are Virtual (except Hyper-V hosts obviously:)
- that means virtualization is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
- all clusters (SQL, Exchange,...) are Guest Clusters on Hyper-V
- SQL 2014
- DPM 2012 R2 CU4
- Primary and DR location
SETUP
SQL
- Primary location: SQL 2014 Guest Cluster with SQL Failover Cluster Instance using Shared VHDX disks
- DR location: SQL 2014 Standalone using VHDX disks
- AlwaysOn Availability Group expands between the primary and DR location.
DPM
- Primary location: DPM 2012 R2 CU4
- DPM 2012 R2 CU4 Agents installed on every possible SQL 2014 Server.
SCENARIO
- DPM is backing up all the SQL Databases normally as long as they exist on any SQL Cluster Node on Primary location.
- As soon as any Database is moved to DR location, that Database is not backed up anymore with the following error.
DPM ERROR
Starting synchronization on SqlServerName\DatabaseName failed:
Error 104: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running.
Error details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
Recommended action: Retry the operation.
TROUBLESHOOTING
- Tried to modify SQL Protection Group in DPM Server while Database was active on DR location
> error enumerating volumes or drives D:\, E:\, F:\ (I don't have exact error atm)
> this looks like DPM is not aware that DPM is active on DR location to me
- Checked Technet, blogs and forums; no useful information
QUESTION
Is this expected or by-design behavior? Is this a bug? I am aware there were quite some issues backing up AG's from DPM 2012 SP1 ans SQL 2012 on.
Does anybody have a lab of that kind to try it out?
Thank you!
Best Regards,
Damjan Grimšič

OK. The issue has been resolved. Issue was related to possible Disks Owners in Failover Cluster Manager Console for SQL Cluster.
In Primary's site SQL Cluster Failover Manager Console / Storage / Disks.
SQL Server(s) from Secondary location need(s) to be unchecked as Possible owner(s) in Advanced Policies for all relevant Volumes.

• Which role do I need DFS or File server on fail over cluster server 2012 R2?

what I want to achieve is that I want to share all my user data files in a central location and to be highly available all the time whether it's a general share or folder redirection data. BUT I'm a bit confused; I have fail over cluster set-up
on server 2012, now I would like to add DFS as a role but than we have another role called File server and virtually it does the same thing as DFS? Means it creates a namespace share that can be access even one of the nodes goes down. Now I am thinking is
that DFS does the replication between two physical location but fail over cluster works slightly differently and with file server it pretty much does the same thing except for replicating data from one drive to another. Now what do you suggest I do or
did I get the concept wrong like a noob?

DFS and Failover Clustering for file shares provides a similar end result for file access, but they are significantly different implementations.
Clustering provides high availability to files by presenting shared access to set a files served from a cluster. With 2012 R2 Microsoft added the ability to create a Scale-out File Server that even allows all nodes of the cluster to server access to
the files for a higher level of performance and other great things. Bottom line with Failover Clusters for files is that there is a single copy of the file presented from the cluster.
DFS on the other hand provides high availability to files by presenting multiple copies of the file by making a copy in two or more locations and presenting a naming space that allows access to the file through any of the network paths. DFS works very
well for files that are primarily read-only. When you get into a situation where there is a lot of updating of the shared files, DFS is not a very good solution. There are ways to implement DFS for read/write files, but it generally requires a
good knowledge of how the files are used and how you want to manage them.
The key to answering your question comes in your first sentence "I want to share all my user data files in a central location and to be highly available all the time". My initial reaction to this is that central location means Failover Cluster
- there is only a single copy of the file. However, "all the time" can be compromised by network failures to the central site. Remote sites would not have access if they can't access the central site. DFS provides the ability to
have copies remotely, but then if you allow updating at multiple sites, you have to manage the merging of the changes, among other things.

• DPM 2012 R2 cannot backup VM online

Hi Everyone,
I'm having a problem trying to backup a VM with DPM, as it shows "offline" backup only (not online).
Our environment:
DPM 2012 R2 server with UR5, running on Windows 2012 R2. This server backs up all Virtual Machines running on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster. All the VMs are running Windows 2008 R2, with the latest Hyper-V Integration Tool (v6.3.9600.16384).
Only a few VMs on that cluster cannot be backed up "online".
I already checked the following:
- The backup (volume snapshot) integration service is installed and enabled in the VM configuration
- The VM does not have any dynamic disks
- All Disks on the VM are NTFS
- The VM Cluster resource is online
- The VM is running
- The Shadow storage assignment inside the VM for all volumes are set on the respective volume (not different)
- The VM has a SCSI controller
- Although meant for another version of DPM and OS, I tried to add the following registry key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore - REG_DWORD ScopeSnapshots 0x0
(solution found here: https://mvanvliet.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/issue-windows-server-2012-virtual-machines-can-only-be-backed-up-using-saved-state/)
- Also tried to remove all VHDX from the VM configuration, save the config and re-add the VHDX
(solution found here: http://blog.metasplo.it/2014/02/dpm-2012-r2-only-allows-offline-backups.html)
- All the disks within the VM have plenty of free space (more than 30% on each volumes)
- Try to move the VM around on different hosts on the Hyper-V cluster
I've run out of troubleshooting steps...
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Stephane

Hello Stephane.
It seems that we have the same Problem.
Since we have installed the UR5 we have some VM’s that
can no more backed up Online. Last Sunday we had a crash on a host. After we
have investigated the issue we think it have to do with the Backup and the UR5.
We have found some errors where the host have lost the iscsi Target when the
Backup have begun.
We have 2 Infrastructures with the same configuration HP
Store Virtual and the Hardware VSS Provider. We can see that on the Storage no
Snapshots are created.
We try now to add (Workaround) a little Disk to this
Vm’s that is configured as DynamicDisk. So we hope to make an Offline backup.
I think we have to open a case.
