DPM 2012 R2, Scale-out and secondary replicas

Hi all,
TechNet says scale-out protection for VMs and DPM chaining isn't supported - is this still the case for 2012 R2?
Our scenario: We have numerous clusters with a ~dozen Hyper-V (2012/2012R2) nodes each, and lots of running VMs. We need to use DPM scale-out to have multiple DPM servers protect the
clusters, but also need off-site replicas for the data sources.
Cheers

Hi,
There is no change in DPM 2012 R2 with respect to secondary protection for scale out Hyper-v.  Consider backing up to Azure for offsite solution.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Scale out file server cluster using server disks as CSV

    Hi,
My question is if I can create a Scale Out File Server Cluster with CSV using the disks that comes with the servers, we have 2 servers with 2 arrays each one, 1 array for the OS files and 1 array that we could use for the CSV.
    Regards.

    Hi,
a SoFS needs some kind of shared Storage, this could be in the old days ISCSI or FC SAN and now also a Shared SAS JBOD with Clustered Storage Spaces.
If you have 2  Servers with "local" Disks you need some sort of Software to create a Shared Disk Layer out of that local Disks, like Starwind or DataCore.

Udo, clustered RAID controllers still require SAS disks mounted into external enclosure *OR* everything mounted into single chassis for Cluster-In-A-Box scenario (but that's for OEMs). The only two benefits somebody would have with them are a) ability to
privide RAID LUs to Clustered Storage Spaces (non-clustered RAID controllers would be used as a SAS controllers only in pass-thru mode) and b) abillity to have caches synchronized so VM moved from one physical host to another would not start from the "cold"
state. Please see LSI Syncro reference manual for details:

technology, the Syncro CS 9286-8e solution allows a system administrator to build a costeffective,
easy to deploy and manage server failover cluster using volume servers and an offthe-

DAS environments, leveraging the low cost DAS infrastructure, simplicity, and performance
benefits. Controller to controller connectivity is provided through the high performance SAS

  • DPM 2012 R2 CU4 protecting SQL 2014 AlwaysOn AG with Failover Cluster vs. DR location

    Hello!
We have a problem protecting any Database of SQL 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group with SQL Failover Cluster Instance when moved to DR location. Everything is protected using DPM 2012 R2 CU4 from Primary location.
    FACTS
    - all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2
    - all servers are Virtual (except Hyper-V hosts obviously:)
    - that means virtualization is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
    - all clusters (SQL, Exchange,...) are Guest Clusters on Hyper-V
    - SQL 2014
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - Primary and DR location
    SETUP
    SQL
    - Primary location: SQL 2014 Guest Cluster with SQL Failover Cluster Instance using Shared VHDX disks
    - DR location: SQL 2014 Standalone using VHDX disks
    - AlwaysOn Availability Group expands between the primary and DR location.
    DPM
    - Primary location: DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4 Agents installed on every possible SQL 2014 Server.
    SCENARIO
    - DPM is backing up all the SQL Databases normally as long as they exist on any SQL Cluster Node on Primary location.
    - As soon as any Database is moved to DR location, that Database is not backed up anymore with the following error.
    DPM ERROR
    Starting synchronization on SqlServerName\DatabaseName failed:
Error 104: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running.
Error details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
    Recommended action: Retry the operation.
    TROUBLESHOOTING
    - Tried to modify SQL Protection Group in DPM Server while Database was active on DR location
    > error enumerating volumes or drives D:\, E:\, F:\ (I don't have exact error atm)
    > this looks like DPM is not aware that DPM is active on DR location to me
    - Checked Technet, blogs and forums; no useful information
    QUESTION
Is this expected or by-design behavior? Is this a bug? I am aware there were quite some issues backing up AG's from DPM 2012 SP1 ans SQL 2012 on.
Does anybody have a lab of that kind to try it out?
    Thank you!

OK. The issue has been resolved. Issue was related to possible Disks Owners in Failover Cluster Manager Console for SQL Cluster.

  • Surely It cannot be this hard! DPM 2012 R2 with Update rollup 2

I am close to giving up!
New to DPM but very experienced with networking/servers.
I installed DPM 2012 R2 and then installed rollup 2
I launch the DPM console, add some storage and then go to install the agent on a server - it fails
I get the standard message. When I check on the server I tried to install to I can see that the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service was installed and running and listening on port 5719 but there is no DPMRA service.
So I perform a manual installation using the correct version from Rollup 2 on the server to be protected. This goes OK and I return to the DPM server to add the protected server. Made sure services were running on both servers, checkerd RPC, WMI, DCOM settings
and all seems OK but when I try to add the protected server from the DPM console using the attach agent option it fails with error 370.
Followed the top 20 suggestions, configured firewall for all ports on both servers. Tried turning the firewall off and still will not install.
I have also tried using a Hyper-V server, a physical server and none will work which tends to point to an issue with the DPM server.
The thing that puzzles me is that after I perform a manual agent installation on the protected server this seems to knock out the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service which is no longer listed under services wheras DPMRA is running. I expected both services
    to be installed and running.
When I perform a NETSTAT -a after installing the remote agent I can see port 5718 is listening but not port 5719
If I go back a step and try a dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator install via DPM console (as part of adding the protected server) it does install dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator and it listens on port 5719 but the DPMRA agent software is not installed.
I have tried deinstalling both the DPM agent software on the protected server and have even reinstalled DPM 2012 R2 with Rollup 2 with no change
I have verified communications between the servers. Checked the DPM server is in the relevant groups. Am at a complete loss on what to do next - it should not be this hard.
Can someone confirm to me that they expect both the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service running on 5719 and the DPMRA service to be running on 5718 on the protected server which is what I assume but this
    is not happening!
DPM server is a physical box running Server 2012. Protected server is a Physical box running Server 2012 R2. I have also tried with a physical server 2008R2 with the same results. I am not running Server 2003
    prd

After 3 long days trying everything I could think of and following all of the excellent guidance out there ( thanks guys) I have a workaround.
The answer was to make the dpm server computer account a member of the domain admins group.
After I restarted the DPM server I saw that although the protected server account was still in error - the error message changed from 270 to 316.
So I then add the protected server computer account to the domain admins group
After I restarted the computers I could see the magic OK in the status of the DPM console.
As an experiment I removed the protected servers computer account from domain admins and restarted the server. After the restart DPM could no longer communicate with error 316 again.
So I tried adding the DPM server computer account to the protected servers local administrators group but this did not work.
Deeply unhappy with making a computer account a member of domain admin group but it works.
The question is why? There is obviously a security permissions issue that does not affect domain admins.
I am running this on freshly built servers on a simple, single domain.
Microsoft you need to look into this.

  • How to size a Scale-out File Server

    Hi,
We are looking to implement a 2-node 2012 R2 Scale-out File Server cluster (using SAS JBOD enclosure) for the primary purpose of storing the VHD files that will be accessed by a 4-node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster using 10 gigabit Ethernet (no RDMA).  Our
environment can be characterised as having a large number of mostly idle VMs that experience sporadic, low intensity use (this is *not* a VDI environment).  We have 2 questions.
    1) To what extent is RAM a consideration for the SoFS servers?  We can't find any documentation to suggest that there are benefits to be gained by having more RAM in the SoFS servers but we don't know if we should go with 8/16/32/64+ GB RAM in each
    of the nodes.
    2) With the need to keep costs down, we don't think RDMA / SMB-Direct NICs are going to be within our reach.  Should we however look to have 2 * dual-port 10 Gbps NICs in both the SoFS & Hyper-V boxes?

Unless your VMs are read-intensive and you're going to deploy a CSV cache memory requirement for serving mostly idle VMs can be pretty low. However RAM is cheap these days so going for less then 16GB per node does not sound reasonable. Good sample, see:

  • Toshiba 32 XV505 optical out and sound bar

Hi guys, wonder if you can help.
I have a toshiba XV505 TV and I've just bought a Cambridge Audio TV minx sound bar, it works fine with a headphone cable from the TV but for best quality sound I wanted to use an optical out cable. But when plugging in the optical cable I get nothing, I've tried the optical cable with the DVD player and it works fine so the cable is good. Is this some type of restriction with the TV that it can't output the sound?
I can't find a setting in the menu where I'd need to enable it. Can anybody help?

The optical out option is not displayed.
nothing to do with Midi Setup, the issue is Hardware level, when hdmi is plugged there is no way to get out signal from optical out. (no red light). Even with hdmi to dvi converter.
I just bought a none official MDP to DVI adapter, hoping it works.... just paid about 8$. But I think it's a shame to make users find own solutions and spend even more money, after spendig 1000€ in a Mac mini.......
That's not the way to do things, they made a big mistake with that, no way to get optical sound, im going to try this last trick, but even if it works im totally disappointed with apple. After more than two months Late 2012 mini come out, and no solution for this.... just an update we need!!

  • DPM 2012 Primary SP1 and Secondary R2 mixed mode

I have a Primary and Secondary DPM 2012 SP1 configuration.  The DPM servers protect each other's DPM database in a Cyclic protection.  The Primary DPM server is backing up a few servers that are running Windows Server 2003.  I want to
upgrade the DPM servers to 2012 R2, but I just found out that DPM 2012 R2 does not support protecting Windows Server 2003 until DPM 2012 Update Rollup 2 is released.
My question is, can I upgrade my secondary DPM server to 2012 R2 and continue to protect the DPM 2012 SP1 server and all of its protected volumes?  Whenever DPM 2012 R2 UR2 is released I would then upgrade the primary DPM server to 2012 R2 as well and
patch both primary and secondary with UR2.
Please advise if this is a supported plan for my upgrade to DPM 2012 R2.

  • What does "Scale out deployment (Web Farms)" mean for SP2013 and SQL 2012 SSRS?

    Dear community,
    in the
Feature List of Reporting Services 2012, it's written that "Scale out deployment (Web farms)" is not possible for SQL 2012 Standard edition. However, does this relate as well to SSRS in SP-integrated mode, or only to native mode?
In other words: is it possible to deploy SSRS using SQL 2012 STANDARD on more than one server in a SP2013 farm?
And just to be sure: am I right to assume that in both cases, you can create multiple SSRS Svc Applications (be they all running on the same server) and assign them to different web applications (through their proxy groups)?
    Cheers,
    C

    Hi CHinz,
According to your description, you want to configure scale-out deployment for SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 standard edition. Right?
As you can see in the msdn liabrary, for SQL Server 2012, scale-out deployment is only supported in Enterprise and Business Intelligence editions. This is related to both native mode and sharepoint integrated mode.
It's not supported to deploy a SSRS 2012 standard edition instance on more than one server.
Since scale-out deployment is for different report server instance to share one report server database. You can use different web applications to access the same report in different report server instances.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

  • DPM 2012 R2 UR4 and BMR backup from physical 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS)

    Hi,
    I'm completely lost.
    We updated from DPM2010 (2008 R2) to DPM 2012 R2 RU4 (2012 R2).
Clean install. Same hardware. Everything went quite smoothly.
Our new (and also old did the same thing) DMP protects some Hyper-V guest on our 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster, one Exchange (2010) DB's and SQL 2008 R2 DB's and one physical server - 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS ~160GB of data).
Currently we are using some Buffalo Terastation's III (TS-RIXL) iSCSI SAN storage to hold our DPM protected data.
    Configured as RAID 5.
Our new DPM server is connected to those iSCSI devices using built in MS iSCSI initiator via secondary NIC on this server using dedicated iSCSI subnet.
Everything seems to be fine unitil System State and BMR (I'v checked both) runs.
Basically my iSCSI NIC shows Write about ~170Mbit/s and Read about 520Mbit/s when backing up virtual machines, Exchange or SQL.
When it comes to System State and BMR backup the trouhgput is MUCH slower (about 65Mbit/s) and I can not figure out why. I understand that the BMR backup initiates direct writing to the DPM created and shared replica volume on my iSCSI NAS (my wording
might be not correct but basically  I understand how this works). But I don't understand why the speed is so much slower. I'v tried everything, googeled around, changed NIC drivers, firmware etc. No luck.
If I just copy some big ISO file from/to server to DPM or vice versa the speed is arount 100MB/s (as reported by windows itself). So it seems to able to utilize full network speed. But why this backup is so slow? I'm excpecting to see speed about ~170Mbit/s
because it corresponds my iSCSI Write speed as seen when backing up hyper-v guests and DB's..
    What I'm doing wrong?
    Any help is appreciated :)
    rgds Sven

    Hi Sven,
Sometimes BMR is slower than backing up virtual machines (VHDs). If there is a free local disk, please test to do a backup locally to see the speed. From your description a common backup works much faster so let's see if it is the backup speed which causes
    the issue or not.

  • Scale out question: how does instance name affect primary/secondary node

    Hi:
    OBIEE 11.1.1.6.4, Windows 2008
On a test instance the following happened:
    1. Enterprise install of OBIEE 11g had problems
    2. Reinstalled OBIEE 11g, but the installer created an instance2
    3. All was well with this install
    4. Performed all necessary shared catalog and RPD steps
    5. On a second server, installed OBIEE 11g using the scale-out option
    6. On second server, this created an instance1 directory
    7. All components start up and we can log into OBIEE using either server1 or server2
    Question:
Does OBIEE use the instance names in a scale-out? Our primary node is instance2 and the secondary node is instance1, though on a separate server. Will this cause a problem?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello,
This can be run on any of the replicas that the availability group participates in to return the primary instance:
    select primary_replica FROM sys.dm_hadr_name_id_map nim
    inner join sys.dm_hadr_availability_group_states ags

  • SQL 2012 SP1 Enterprise (SSRS in SharePoint mode): Reporting Services scale-out deployment is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services

    Hello,
SSRS in SharePoint mode is driving me insane.
We are recreating a SharePoint 2013 (SP1) farm in a test environment with the following set-up:
    2 SP Web FrontEnds
    2 SP Application Servers
    1 SQL Server
At both SP APP Servers, we installed SSRS (SQL 2012 Enterprise w/ SP1) in SP integrated mode.
We managed to start the SSRS SP service at the first SP APP Server. However when we try to start it on the second APP Server, we get the following error:
"Reporting Services scale-out deployment is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. This edition only supports one instance of the SQL Server Reporting Services Service in the farm.  The SQL Server Reporting Services service cannot
be started on this server unless it is stopped on all other servers in the farm. "
Now I can't stress this enough: This is a SQL Server 2012 SP1 Enterprise. This is the image we got from our MSDN subscription. There is no mistake here.
Could someone please advise why SP might think this version of SSRS is not the correct one?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    P.

    Hello,
I'm afraid that is not it.
After a long, frustrating and strenuous investigation and troubleshooting, we found the problem.
The problem is the current ISO for SQL Server 2012 Enterprise SP1 (x64) found at MSDN. Bear in mind that we downloaded this ISO from MSDN about a month ago.
As soon as we recreated the environment using the ISO for SQL Server 2012 Enterprise SP2 (x64) found at MSDN, everything worked as expected -- and that includes running more than one SSRS in SharePoint mode.
Also bear in mind that we tried updating the SQL SP1 install with SP2 and subsequent cumulative updates but that never fixed the problem.
There is something fundamentally wrong with that ISO with SP1 slipstreamed in it that no matter the subsequent updates installed, SSRS in SharePoint mode fails to work properly on a multi-server environment. We went as far as SP2 with CU3 and nothing seemed
to fix the problem. And yes, we also performed manual updates to the SSRS and PowerPivot SharePoint MSI add-ins.
I am shocked and distraught to find out that I lost hours of work due to a dodgy ISO image.
    Regards,
    P.

  • SQL Server Service Pack Install and SSRS Scale Out Environment

We have an error in our SSRS environment that looks to be addressed in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3. Our set up is a scale out environment, 2 SSRS app servers and 1 SSRS database server. For simplicity as we are moving to 2012 soon, I would like to only install
the service pack on one of the SSRS app servers. Anyone aware of any reason besides keeping servers consistent to not do this? I don't want to go through the time to upgrade the SSRS SQL Server if I don't have to.
    Thanks

    Hello,
If you apply the service pack on the database server first, front-ends may not be able to provide service again until you
apply the SP to them too. I have no knowledge of other possible issue.
Remember to backup SSRS databases and encryption key before applying the service pack.
    Hope this helps.

  • Does DPM 2012 R2 still needs DataSourceGroups.xml and MaxAllowedParallelBackups key when using Hyper-V VSS Software Writer to backup Server 2012 R2 Cluster

    Hi,
Does DPM 2012 R2 still needs DataSourceGroups.xml and MaxAllowedParallelBackups key when using Hyper-V VSS Software Writer to backup Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with CSV's? Can't find a clear answer somewhere.
    Thanx for helping me out.
    DJITS.

    Configure CSV backups
If you are running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 and you’re backing up multiple clusters with DPM, you need to ensure that only one backup uses the same CSV at any one time. To do this, follow the instructions in
    Serialize virtual machine backups.
If you’re using software VSS with Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2, do the following
Serialize virtual machine backups per node
Serialize virtual machine backups per CSV LUN
    Have a nice day !!!
