DPM 2012 R2 Slow to expand Cluster Role and Add VM to backups

When i want to add a new VM to the backup.
I go to modify protection group, Expand the Cluster to see all the HA roles, then expand the VM i want so i can select it, this is where it is extremely slow. Once i expand the VM, an hour glass comes on under the VM and takes over an hour to give me option
of Online/Offline backup to select.
Is any one else having this issue ? we do have over 500 hundred VM's in the cluster and don't remember to have this issue when we had just few in the beginning.

Hi,
which DPM Version are you working on?
Have tried to clear the Cache on de DS Selection Page?

  • DPM 2012 R2 Roll Up 2: Agent Terminating or Checksum mismatch during backups

    Hi There,
I have dual DPM server deployment. Primary DPM server backs up to disk in my production site and then I have a Secondary DPM server creating replicas to Disk and Tape in my DR site. Both DPM servers are running DPM 2012 R2. I recently installed DPM 2012
R2 Roll Up 2 (Was running Roll up 1 for weeks without issue), careful not to install the bugged version of the update. Everything was running normally and then suddenly about 4 days later some of my resources started failing and became inconsistent on my Secondary
    DPM server.
    Either:
    1. My DPMRA service on my Secondary DPM server terminates with the following Application Log error
Faulting application name: DPMRA.exe, version: 4.2.1235.0, time stamp: 0x536a4419
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.2.9200.16864, time stamp: 0x531d34d8

    Faulting application start time: 0x01cf8a0713e8c930
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\bin\DPMRA.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\KERNELBASE.dll

    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:
    OR
    2. DPM has detected a checksum mismatch during data transfer over the network (ID: 30087)
I have already removed and deleted from disk the failing resources on the Secondary DPM server and then re-added them to the protection groups, but again either the agent terminates or fails with checksum during replica creation or consistency check. Note
that the Primary DPM server is happy and all the resources are green and backing up successfully numerous times a day.
I suspect that the update 4 days before the issues started might have created this issue. Has anyone had these issues or know of potential ways to fix it?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to rebuild the Secondary DPM server.
    Thanks
    Jacques

    Hi,
Here is an update. I have managed to get a workaround.
If I enforce IPSec with ESP between my primary and secondary DPM server then the agent stops terminating or reporting checksum errors.
Still waiting on someone from the DPM team to give a suggestion here as it seems to be a bug that started after I installed Roll Up 2 for DPM 2012 R2
    Thanks
    Jacques

  • Cluster Aware Updating - can't install cluster role

Looking for some assistance with enabling cluster aware updating. I currently have an 8-node cluster for Hyper-V running Windows Server 2012 R2. While trying to enable Cluster Aware Updating, it fails on the actual creation of the cluster role and I receive
    the following error message:
There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.
I'm not seeing any other information in event viewer, etc. that I can use to troubleshoot this. Has anyone come across this before? Thanks.

Eventually found my own solution. I was receiving that error because the Windows Firewall service was turned off on all cluster members. After enabling the Windows Firewall service, I was able to get past the error message.

  • Saved State Backup on Server 2012 R2 and DPM 2012

Hello, Our environment in currently in transition with planned migration to 2012 R2. In the mean time, we have a 5 node 2008 R2 hyper-v cluster with CSV.  We are currently using DPM 2012 for our backup.  I have read multiple postings about child
partition backup and saved state and all that seems to make relative sense.
What I have noticed is that in our existing environment (2008 R2 Hyper-v, DPM 2012) that all 2012 R2 Virtual servers setup in our hyper-v cluster show 'Backup Using Saved State'.  All virtual 2003 - 2008 R2 servers on the same cluster show as 'Backup
    using Child Partition Snapshot'.
So, the question: is this normal and the only way virtual 2012 R2 servers can be backed up in our environment? Or, is there some configuration on the virtual 2012 R2 servers that needs to be done so that the Hyper-v VSS writers show that it can be backed
up using Child Partition Snapshot. (Yes, I viewed the Hyper-V VSS Writer Caption: for each system on all the nodes and no, I am not talking about what is displayed in DPM 2012 since I understand it may not truly reflect the current backup method)

Have you already checked typical reason for DPM doing saved state backup? If not, find them below.
    Also, do your VM have
SCSI controller added? Prior to using Veeam as our primary backup solution, we leveraged DPM and confronted the very same issue. Fortunately, by adding ISCSI controllers to VMs in question we were able to solve the problem.
Conditions when DPM fails to back up Hyper-V virtual machines in an online state
By default, System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) performs a backup of a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (VM) in an online state. However, DPM cannot back up a Hyper-V VM in an online state, if one or more of the following
    conditions are true:
Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
The virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
The virtual machine has one or more non-NTFS based volumes.
The virtual machine Cluster Resource Group in a cluster setup is offline.
The virtual machine is not in a running state.
A ShadowStorage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.
An App-V drive is installed on the virtual machine that creates a non-NTFS volume.
These conditions are set by the Hyper-V writer. In such a case, the VM is put in a saved state before a snapshot of host volumes are taken (except when the VM is turned off) for a backup. The Hyper-V writer adds the VM in the following format:
For offline backups: Backup Using Saved State\<VMName>
For online backups: Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\<VMName>
Additional reason if we have less than 300MB free space on a volume in the guest.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

  • DPM 2012 R2 (BMR) Replica allways inconsistent

    Hello,
I have two Server 2012 servers running DPM 2012 R2. I am trying to do a Bare Metal Recovery backup on one of our protected servers. The protected server is running Server 2008 R2. But since i added the server the replica is allways inconsistent.

Ok so have been running DPM 2012 r2 now for almost 4 months now on my companies servers per my Network Admins decision. When I set this up I set my short term recovery to be 14 days. We purchased Azure for our long term retention and when setting this up
in DPM I noticed I could only choose a max of 120 backups. I asked my Admin and he said not to worry about it. As a new network tech I said okay. Now a week ago now I have finally upgraded our DPM 2012 instance to CU5 to support Exchange and also for the long
term retention policy changes. Now when I go into DPM and try and change the old backup Retention policy for online I do not get the new options. I created a new protection group of and added a server I have not setup yet and I do get the new options
    on that one.
My question is, is there a way to convert my old protection groups backup policy to the new ones without losing my current online backups? I tried to stop protection of the group and choose the check boxes to leave the data that is online but when I go to
re-create the backup and choose online protection it tells me I cannot change the policies on the protection group as a policy already exists.
    Thank you

    Hi,
Unfortunately the two policies are not compatible so the old policy cannot be converted to the new policy without removing online protection, deleting the online backups and re-protecting.

  • Surely It cannot be this hard! DPM 2012 R2 with Update rollup 2

I am close to giving up!
New to DPM but very experienced with networking/servers.
I installed DPM 2012 R2 and then installed rollup 2
I launch the DPM console, add some storage and then go to install the agent on a server - it fails
I get the standard message. When I check on the server I tried to install to I can see that the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service was installed and running and listening on port 5719 but there is no DPMRA service.
So I perform a manual installation using the correct version from Rollup 2 on the server to be protected. This goes OK and I return to the DPM server to add the protected server. Made sure services were running on both servers, checkerd RPC, WMI, DCOM settings
and all seems OK but when I try to add the protected server from the DPM console using the attach agent option it fails with error 370.
Followed the top 20 suggestions, configured firewall for all ports on both servers. Tried turning the firewall off and still will not install.
I have also tried using a Hyper-V server, a physical server and none will work which tends to point to an issue with the DPM server.
The thing that puzzles me is that after I perform a manual agent installation on the protected server this seems to knock out the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service which is no longer listed under services wheras DPMRA is running. I expected both services
    to be installed and running.
When I perform a NETSTAT -a after installing the remote agent I can see port 5718 is listening but not port 5719
If I go back a step and try a dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator install via DPM console (as part of adding the protected server) it does install dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator and it listens on port 5719 but the DPMRA agent software is not installed.
I have tried deinstalling both the DPM agent software on the protected server and have even reinstalled DPM 2012 R2 with Rollup 2 with no change
I have verified communications between the servers. Checked the DPM server is in the relevant groups. Am at a complete loss on what to do next - it should not be this hard.
Can someone confirm to me that they expect both the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service running on 5719 and the DPMRA service to be running on 5718 on the protected server which is what I assume but this
    is not happening!
DPM server is a physical box running Server 2012. Protected server is a Physical box running Server 2012 R2. I have also tried with a physical server 2008R2 with the same results. I am not running Server 2003
    prd

After 3 long days trying everything I could think of and following all of the excellent guidance out there ( thanks guys) I have a workaround.
The answer was to make the dpm server computer account a member of the domain admins group.
After I restarted the DPM server I saw that although the protected server account was still in error - the error message changed from 270 to 316.
So I then add the protected server computer account to the domain admins group
After I restarted the computers I could see the magic OK in the status of the DPM console.
As an experiment I removed the protected servers computer account from domain admins and restarted the server. After the restart DPM could no longer communicate with error 316 again.
So I tried adding the DPM server computer account to the protected servers local administrators group but this did not work.
Deeply unhappy with making a computer account a member of domain admin group but it works.
The question is why? There is obviously a security permissions issue that does not affect domain admins.
I am running this on freshly built servers on a simple, single domain.
Microsoft you need to look into this.

  • DPM 2012 R2 CU4 protecting SQL 2014 AlwaysOn AG with Failover Cluster vs. DR location

    Hello!
We have a problem protecting any Database of SQL 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group with SQL Failover Cluster Instance when moved to DR location. Everything is protected using DPM 2012 R2 CU4 from Primary location.
    FACTS
    - all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2
    - all servers are Virtual (except Hyper-V hosts obviously:)
    - that means virtualization is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
    - all clusters (SQL, Exchange,...) are Guest Clusters on Hyper-V
    - SQL 2014
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - Primary and DR location
    SETUP
    SQL
    - Primary location: SQL 2014 Guest Cluster with SQL Failover Cluster Instance using Shared VHDX disks
    - DR location: SQL 2014 Standalone using VHDX disks
    - AlwaysOn Availability Group expands between the primary and DR location.
    DPM
    - Primary location: DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4 Agents installed on every possible SQL 2014 Server.
    SCENARIO
    - DPM is backing up all the SQL Databases normally as long as they exist on any SQL Cluster Node on Primary location.
    - As soon as any Database is moved to DR location, that Database is not backed up anymore with the following error.
    DPM ERROR
    Starting synchronization on SqlServerName\DatabaseName failed:
Error 104: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running.
Error details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
    Recommended action: Retry the operation.
    TROUBLESHOOTING
    - Tried to modify SQL Protection Group in DPM Server while Database was active on DR location
    > error enumerating volumes or drives D:\, E:\, F:\ (I don't have exact error atm)
    > this looks like DPM is not aware that DPM is active on DR location to me
    - Checked Technet, blogs and forums; no useful information
    QUESTION
Is this expected or by-design behavior? Is this a bug? I am aware there were quite some issues backing up AG's from DPM 2012 SP1 ans SQL 2012 on.
Does anybody have a lab of that kind to try it out?
    Thank you!
    Best Regards,
    Damjan Grimšič

OK. The issue has been resolved. Issue was related to possible Disks Owners in Failover Cluster Manager Console for SQL Cluster.
In Primary's site SQL Cluster Failover Manager Console / Storage / Disks.
SQL Server(s) from Secondary location need(s) to be unchecked as Possible owner(s) in Advanced Policies for all relevant Volumes.

  • DPM 2012 R2 protecting a SQL 2008 Cluster/Vss Writer problems on SQL Server

    Hola,
I am running DPM 2012 R2 rollup 4. My Server OS is 2012 Datacenter. I have a SQL 2008 Active/Passive cluster  and MS support has kicked this to the SQL team for review. OK hear we go ..When I run the vssadmin list writer I do see the SQL Writer. Also
says no errors. When I run diskshadow /l c:a.txt from an admin command prompt the output does show the SQL Writer information but under that should display all the meta data for each connection to the database so DPM can expand the SQL database to
be chosen for protection. I am already confused.
I am going to include a snippet from the vssadmin and the diskshadow command:
    vssadmin list writers:
    Writer name: 'SqlServerWriter'
       Writer Id: {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
       Writer Instance Id: {8d773b6f-0196-4c34-9943-f258f99c2d9a}
       State: [1] Stable
       Last error: No error
    Diskshadow /l c:a.txt
     * WRITER "SqlServerWriter"
      - Writer ID   = {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
      - Writer instance ID = {8d773b6f-0196-4c34-9943-f258f99c2d9a}
      - Supports restore events = TRUE
      - Writer restore conditions = VSS_WRE_ALWAYS
      - Restore method = VSS_RME_RESTORE_IF_CAN_REPLACE
      - Requires reboot after restore = FALSE
      - Excluded files:
     * WRITER "BITS Writer"
      - Writer ID   = {4969d978-be47-48b0-b100-f328f07ac1e0}
      - Writer instance ID = {5ad5c4f7-5f68-4c1d-a4fc-92d5ef898881}
      - Supports restore events = TRUE
      - Writer restore conditions = VSS_WRE_UNDEFINED
      - Restore method = VSS_RME_UNDEFINED
      - Requires reboot after restore = FALSE
      - Excluded files:
       - Exclude: Path = C:\Windows\System32, Filespec = bits.log
       - Exclude: Path = C:\Windows\System32, Filespec = bits.bak
       - Exclude: Path = C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Net
As you can see this did not return the expected results. I should see the meta data for each database. This is why DPM can't list the databases for backup in my 2008 production SQL cluster. Any thoughts? This has not been working for quite sometime. I was
hoping the update to rollup 4 would have fixed the problem. I know this is a SQL problem but has anyone had this experience?
    Thanks
    Steve J.

    Update:
Uninstalled SQL Server instance and downloaded SQL Server 2012 SP1 image from link in error message.  It takes you to the download page for the express edition of SQL Server 2012.  I downloaded the SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU file and used it to re-install
    the SQL Server instance.
Ultimately I had to use the ISO image to upgrade the instance to Standard because the SQL Server Agent will not run under the express edition and caused the DPM install to fail.
The DPM installation then completed successfully and after immediately went to Windows Update and SQL Server 2012 SP2 was installed.
Evidently you cannot start with SP2 until the installation is complete.

  • Server 2012 R2 Running Failover cluster role on Domain Controler

I absolutely need to have Domain controller running failover Cluster node,
we have been doing it in 2008r2 and there are documents from Microsoft stating it is possible but not recommended
but the document is for 2012, I am running 2012r2
I can install failover clusting role on a 2012r2 server and from a Member node install the cluster but when I need to add the nodes that are Domain controller they thry to add but then they timeout after 5 minutes, then they delete the node that was try
    to add and clean up
I have tried the CNO record and try to install DC befor and after Cluster role,
    HELP
    thx

    Not supported, see this KB:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281662
Run the DC in a virtual machine, and then put it on top of the cluster.

  • Does DPM 2012 R2 still needs DataSourceGroups.xml and MaxAllowedParallelBackups key when using Hyper-V VSS Software Writer to backup Server 2012 R2 Cluster

    Hi,
Does DPM 2012 R2 still needs DataSourceGroups.xml and MaxAllowedParallelBackups key when using Hyper-V VSS Software Writer to backup Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with CSV's? Can't find a clear answer somewhere.
    Thanx for helping me out.
    DJITS.

    Configure CSV backups
If you are running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2 and you’re backing up multiple clusters with DPM, you need to ensure that only one backup uses the same CSV at any one time. To do this, follow the instructions in
    Serialize virtual machine backups.
If you’re using software VSS with Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2, do the following
Serialize virtual machine backups per node
Serialize virtual machine backups per CSV LUN

  • DPM 2012 R2 Unable to create protection groups after Cluster Migration

    Hi Team
we have an issue relating to DPM 2012 R2. In our environment we have a Hyper-V Cluster and we recently did a Cluster Migration since Hyper-V Cluster was upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2.
Before the upgrade, Windows Server 2008 R2 Cluster was protected by DPM Environment. After we upgraded we are unable to Create new protection Groups existing the new cluster and when we select VMs it's not showing up any members.
Please let us know how we can solve this issue since the Cluster Nodes and the Cluster Name is different from previous Cluster, we were expecting that DPM would allow us to create new Protection Groups while preserving old protection groups for recovery later
    if needed.

    Hi,
you need to stop the Protection of the old HyperV Datasources
Clear the Cache of the Protectiongroup,
and read the new VM to Protectiongroup

  • DPM 2012 R2 (ID 104 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909FF)

We are running DPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012 R2
We have a Protection Group:Servers (9 members) where 5 servers always give the same error message, when we try to run a synchronization job with consistency check. With other 4 server everything is fine. (All 9 servers: Windows Server 2012 R2)
All servers have "Windows Server Backup" feature installed
    Error message:
The replica of Microsoft Hyper-V \Online\S022 Reports on S022 Reports.SynCrust.********.eu is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can
recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.
For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)
    Any help would be appreciated

Just wanted to add some further details to this thread...
    As suggested in
this article, Windows Server Backup has been installed on all 3 cluster nodes. I have also tried disabling/enabling the WinRE agent, as it suggests, with no effect.
The Virtual Machine I am trying to back up is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with the latest updates, and has integration services version 6.3.9600 installed.
    Additional searching led me to
this article, which states "DPM works seamlessly with Hyper-V VSS writer to ensure that consistent versions of virtual machines are captured and protected without affecting virtual machine access." It doesn't clarify if this is the method used
when backing up VMs stored in a CSV, however. Regardless, the Hyper-V VSS writer is not listed when issuing
    vssadmin list providers
I went through the steps outlined in
this article to install the writer, but even after following said steps, the writer still does not appear as registered on the Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster node via the above command.
    I should also mention that
this prereqs article mentions that the Hyper-V role should be installed on the DPM server. The hardware I'm using has an old AMD Sempron 3400+ CPU, so I'm unable to install this role on the DPM. The article states "DPM protects Hyper-V virtual
machines even without the role, but you cannot perform item-level recovery (ILR) unless the role is installed.", so it's doubtful that lack of the role would cause this issue; MindaugasKa, is the Hyper-V role installed on your DPM?
Despite the effort of upgrading my storage server to Windows Storage Server Standard 2012 R2, my cluster nodes to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, and my DPM to 2012 R2, the
    nightmare continues...
