DPM 2012 R2 UR4 and BMR backup from physical 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS)

Hi,
I'm completely lost.
We updated from DPM2010 (2008 R2) to DPM 2012 R2 RU4 (2012 R2).
Clean install. Same hardware. Everything went quite smoothly.
Our new (and also old did the same thing) DMP protects some Hyper-V guest on our 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster, one Exchange (2010) DB's and SQL 2008 R2 DB's and one physical server - 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS ~160GB of data).
Currently we are using some Buffalo Terastation's III (TS-RIXL) iSCSI SAN storage to hold our DPM protected data.
Configured as RAID 5.
Our new DPM server is connected to those iSCSI devices using built in MS iSCSI initiator via secondary NIC on this server using dedicated iSCSI subnet.
Everything seems to be fine unitil System State and BMR (I'v checked both) runs.
Basically my iSCSI NIC shows Write about ~170Mbit/s and Read about 520Mbit/s when backing up virtual machines, Exchange or SQL.
When it comes to System State and BMR backup the trouhgput is MUCH slower (about 65Mbit/s) and I can not figure out why. I understand that the BMR backup initiates direct writing to the DPM created and shared replica volume on my iSCSI NAS (my wording
might be not correct but basically  I understand how this works). But I don't understand why the speed is so much slower. I'v tried everything, googeled around, changed NIC drivers, firmware etc. No luck.
If I just copy some big ISO file from/to server to DPM or vice versa the speed is arount 100MB/s (as reported by windows itself). So it seems to able to utilize full network speed. But why this backup is so slow? I'm excpecting to see speed about ~170Mbit/s
because it corresponds my iSCSI Write speed as seen when backing up hyper-v guests and DB's..
What I'm doing wrong?
Any help is appreciated :)
rgds Sven

Hi Sven,
Sometimes BMR is slower than backing up virtual machines (VHDs). If there is a free local disk, please test to do a backup locally to see the speed. From your description a common backup works much faster so let's see if it is the backup speed which causes
the issue or not.

  • DPM 2012 R2 UR2 and Windows 2003 SP2 Agent Version Issue

Hi All, I have UR2 installed on my DPM 2012 R2 server and have followed Mike's guide on getting them protected:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dpm/archive/2014/06/11/details-on-protecting-windows-server-2003-computers-using-data-protection-manager-2012-r2.aspx
The agents now show in the DPM console but display as needing an update and showing as agent version 4.1.3313.0 instead of 4.1.3441.0, which is odd.
    Servers have:
    .Net 3.5 Sp1 Full
    Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17
    From the DPM server:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\agents\RA\4.2.1235.0\i386\1033\DPMAgentInstaller_Win2K3_i386.exe
    Executed:
    setdpmserver.exe -dpmservername DPMserverName
    From the DPM server:
Attach-ProductionServer.ps1 script on the DPM server and refreshed twice
    What have I missed?

    Hi.
    Reboot your 2003 Server
Run DPM Setup again on Server 2003
    Run setdpmserver.exe again
    click refresh in DPM Server
    worked for me

  • DPM 2012 Primary SP1 and Secondary R2 mixed mode

I have a Primary and Secondary DPM 2012 SP1 configuration.  The DPM servers protect each other's DPM database in a Cyclic protection.  The Primary DPM server is backing up a few servers that are running Windows Server 2003.  I want to
upgrade the DPM servers to 2012 R2, but I just found out that DPM 2012 R2 does not support protecting Windows Server 2003 until DPM 2012 Update Rollup 2 is released.
My question is, can I upgrade my secondary DPM server to 2012 R2 and continue to protect the DPM 2012 SP1 server and all of its protected volumes?  Whenever DPM 2012 R2 UR2 is released I would then upgrade the primary DPM server to 2012 R2 as well and
patch both primary and secondary with UR2.
Please advise if this is a supported plan for my upgrade to DPM 2012 R2.

    Hi,
Not currently, I have asked that a note be added to the following two pages stating that the DPM Server versions must be the same.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Bug: Unable to backup a VM with the same name as an old VM

    Scenario:
You have a VM called "Virtual Machine 1" running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster and you backup this virtual machine using DPM 2012 R2.
You remove "Virtual Machine 1" from DPM, selecting delete replicas and expire all tape backups, and then delete the VM from the cluster as it is no longer required.
Later you create a new virtual machine called "Virtual Machine 1" on the same cluster.  You attempt to backup the VM with DPM however when attempting to add the VM to a protection group you get the error "DPM cannot access the path \Online\Virtual
Machine 1 because part of the path has been deleted or renamed.  Check the path and enter it again".  Refreshing the data source/clearing the cache doesn't help
The only solution I could find that worked was to delete the data source record in DPMDB..tbl_IM_DataSource for the virtual machine.  This also required deleting records that referenced the DataSourceId in other tables.

    Hi
yo need to clear the Cache on the ProtectionGroup Wizard.

    Hi Community,
A customer of ours is experiencing an issue with DPM crashing after a period of time when backing up a large protection group to tape.

Tape backups for other servers, which are part of the same co-location group, work fine and it seems to be just this one causing the issue.
I have seen a few other posts on the net referencing "WARNING MediaPool 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 does not exist." where people have similar issue with DPM crashing out but so far nobody seems to have any answers.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ed

    Hi,
Open SQL management studio and connect to the instance used by DPM.
Run the following Query against the DPMDB and see if it returns any rows, if so please provide the output.
    select MP.mediapoolid, MP.PGSETID from dbo.tbl_MM_MediaPool MP
    Join dbo.tbl_IM_ProtectedGroup PG on PG.ProtectedGroupId = MP.MediaPoolId
    where PG.MediapoolId is NULL
    and MP.PGSetId is not NULL

  • DPM 2012 R2 Support and Hyper-V Workloads on REFS Storage

We have deployed all of our Virtual Machines on REFS filesystem. We are in the process of deploying DPM 2012 R2 and would like to know if there is any information available from Microsoft as to when REFS will be supported for Hyper-V workloads on REFS. Any
information will help us plan for whether to move Hyper-V loads to NTFS.
I can see the Windows Server 2003 is now supported in UR2 and wonder if there is a roadmap available that will be included in future UR for DPM 2012 R2.
Also any information for re-enabling the integrity checking in VHDX after we move a VM from REFS to NTFS would be appreciated.

    Hi,
I do not believe we will be adding support for protecting Hyper-V hosted on REFS in the near term, so plan on using NTFS.
If you are already using REFS and are getting backup failures, you can create the following registry key on the Protected Server, restart DPMRA service and run a consistency check.
    A. On protected server, browse to the registry path: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent\2.0.
    B. Create a DWORD registry value called "ForceFixup" and set it to 0x1.
    C. Restart the DPMRA service on protected server.
NOTE - This will disable use of DPM filter so there will be some backup and possible server performance tradeoffs.
We do not announce fixes in upcoming UR releases.

  • DPM 2012 R2 UR4 Console Constantly Crashing

I have a case open with Microsoft regarding this and despite working on it for a week straight, they haven't been able to figure out the problem.  I'm in the process of escalating it, but in the meantime I thought I'd see if anyone can help point us
    in some sort of direction.
About two months ago I started seeing these console crashes, but they were very infrequent, maybe once or twice a week.  In the past 2-3 weeks, they have increased in frequency, occurring anywhere from every 5 minutes to once an hour.  The console
only crashes when jobs are running.  I can't pinpoint any event that triggered these crashes, however, they seemed to increase in frequency after we had a power outage a few weeks ago.  Over the last week and a half, the crashes are so frequent that
it is impossible to get any complete backups.  Microsoft support has examined the DPM logs, run SQL traces and made some tweaks as far as timeouts but the crashes continue.  They tell me the issue is that there are "timeouts" when DPM is
    connecting to its database.
If anybody has any ideas, I'd love to hear them and I'd be happy to provide any more information.  We are in a really bad situation at this point.  We have 50 TB of data, so I really don't want to build a new server and start over.
The follwing is the error in the Application Log which I see every time the console crashes:
"The description for Event ID 940 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Unable to connect to the database because of a fatal database error. It is unlikely that the database itself has been damaged.  Review the event log and take appropriate action. Make sure that SQL Server is running.

It appears I've finally found what's causing this.  When we had our power outage a few weeks ago, one of our iSCSI NAS devices had a problem and we lost a volume for DPM.  We fixed it, but had to remove all the sources in DPM that had
data stored on the problem volume, and added them back to the new volume we created.
Yesterday, I discovered that the problem volume was still showing in Windows Disk Management as missing even though it was completely gone from the DPM console.  On a hunch, I removed the missing volume from Disk Manager, DPM has been stable (going
    on 15 hours now.)
As usual, it seems obvious now that I've found the problem...I just wish Microsoft could have pointed me in the right direction given all the logs and sql traces they've been examining.

  • DPM 2012 R2 UR4 - DPM could not set security permissions on the replica or recovery point volume that was created.

    Hi All,
I am running a fresh install of SCDPM 2012 R2 with a protection group that is backing up the 'C:\', Bare Metal and System State of some VMs. If i add any additional servers to the group since the first creation it returns the following error:
Modify protection group: System State & Bare Metal Recovery failed:
Error 419: DPM could not set security permissions on the replica or recovery point volume that was created.
Error details: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process
Recommended action: Review the error details, take appropriate action and retry the operation.
If i re-create the whole protection group it works fine.
Could any one advise any further diagnostics I can do to try and locate the reason behind not being able to modify the group after the first creation? I can add new servers to other PGs without any issues.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

If you are protecting any of the system state/BMR protection. Can you stop protection by deleting the older recovery points and then recreate the protection group.
This thread mentions this to be a hardware issue, albeit with less information on what exact hardware issue:

  • IBooks missing after iPad Air purchased and downloaded backup from Cloud

I just purchased the iPad air, and installed my programs from an iCloud backup. However the iBooks icon disappeared, and I cannot find it with a search on the iPad Air.  When I checked the app store, the App Store shows that it is installed on my device and should be able to be opened. However I cannot open it when I try to Click the 'open' link. Ideas? I would like to uninstall iBooks and reinstall it, however I can't find the app to be able to do so.
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Kelly

Is the iBooks app on the iPad? If so, have you tried 1) uninstalling the iBooks app then reboot the iPad, then reinstall the iBooks app and try and download books one by one?
Also check the settings for iBooks in settings? Is your wifi behaving normally? Just thinking out loud, hopefully an expert will jump in...

I'm asking this because I have no internet at home for the moment. And I really which to restore everything I have on my current iPhone, and I especially don't want to wait until my internet has been repaired
_So, just to be clear :_
    1. Can a backup of another iPhone be installed on a iPhone which is already activated as 'a new phone' ?
    2. If answer to "1." is Yes : Can it be done without internet ?
    Thx for the help.
    Greetings from Brussels.

To update software or restore an iphone requires an internet connection. So no, you will not be able to restore your phone on your home computer without an internet connection.

  • Unable to remove Azure VNet and Azure Backup from expired trial

    Hi
We recently took an Azure trial, tested some bits and let the trial expire. We have now gone back and setup our PAYG subscription however i am unable to remove the vnet and backup service that are attached to the now expired trial subscription:
VNet: The subscription is in a disabled state.
Backup: You cannot delete vault <backup_name>
because it contains registered servers. Delete the servers and the restore points for the server data, and then delete the vault.
    Any thoughts appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Mekh
I have checked the links and unfortunately they dont get me any further. I have removed all other services, sites and vms and there was never a gateway in place however i still cannot remove the vnet.
For the second link i am unable to drill down into the vnet as it is associated with a disabled subscription.
The backup service was provisioned under the trial account. I have attempted to create another vault under the active subscription and then attempt the removal again. This still does not work. I have removed
the vault in the PAYG sub.
I believe that the problem with the vault on the trail account is that it will be holding recovery points but i am unable to access the service to remove them under the disabled sub.
    Thanks

  • DPM 2012 R2 cannot backup VM online

    Hi Everyone,
I'm having a problem trying to backup a VM with DPM, as it shows "offline" backup only (not online).
    Our environment:
DPM 2012 R2 server with UR5, running on Windows 2012 R2. This server backs up all Virtual Machines running on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster. All the VMs are running Windows 2008 R2, with the latest Hyper-V Integration Tool (v6.3.9600.16384).
Only a few VMs on that cluster cannot be backed up "online".
    I already checked the following:
     - The backup (volume snapshot) integration service is installed and enabled in the VM configuration
     - The VM does not have any dynamic disks
     - All Disks on the VM are NTFS
     - The VM Cluster resource is online
     - The VM is running
     - The Shadow storage assignment inside the VM for all volumes are set on the respective volume (not different)
     - The VM has a SCSI controller
     - Although meant for another version of DPM and OS, I tried to add the following registry key:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore - REG_DWORD ScopeSnapshots 0x0
    (solution found here: https://mvanvliet.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/issue-windows-server-2012-virtual-machines-can-only-be-backed-up-using-saved-state/)
     - Also tried to remove all VHDX from the VM configuration, save the config and re-add the VHDX
    (solution found here: http://blog.metasplo.it/2014/02/dpm-2012-r2-only-allows-offline-backups.html)
     - All the disks within the VM have plenty of free space (more than 30% on each volumes)
     - Try to move the VM around on different hosts on the Hyper-V cluster
I've run out of troubleshooting steps...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Stephane

    Hello Stephane.
It seems that we have the same Problem.
Since we have installed the UR5 we have some VM’s that
can no more backed up Online. Last Sunday we had a crash on a host. After we
have investigated the issue we think it have to do with the Backup and the UR5.
We have found some errors where the host have lost the iscsi Target when the
    Backup have begun.
We have 2 Infrastructures with the same configuration HP
Store Virtual and the Hardware VSS Provider. We can see that on the Storage no
    Snapshots are created.
We try now to add (Workaround) a little Disk to this
Vm’s that is configured as DynamicDisk. So we hope to make an Offline backup.
I think we have to open a case.

  • Backup fails for a Hyper-V guest with VSS Writer failures using DPM 2012 R2 - Hyper-V guest has Oracle application installed,

I am trying to backup a VM which before it had Oracle installed backed up with no problems.  It is a Windows 2008 R2 server which sites on an 8 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster (with CSVs).  I am using DPM 2012 R2 to run the backups which have been
successful for the last few weeks but then Oracle was installed and the backups have failed since then.
The job fails and a large number of VSS writers go into a 'Failed' state with the 'Last Error' showing as 'Timed out'.  I then get 4 popups appear each referring to a 'temporary' drive which appears briefly in Disk Management with a RAW file system.
These pops say "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it.  Do you want to format it?" (where
X: is replaced by the drive letter assigned to each 'temporary' drive).
The System event log is populated with a large number of warnings with Event 51, Disk, stating "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk<number>\DR<number> during a paging operation".  There are also a
few warnings for Ntfs (eventid 57) stating that "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log.  Corruption may occur."
Prior to these warnings there are 5 other warnings for partmgr (eventid 58) stating "The disk signature of disk
<number x> is equal to the disk signatuire of disk <number y>" and 4 errors (eventid 1, VDS Basic Provider), "Unexpected failure.  Error code: 490@01010004".
There is a script which is run to stop the Oracle application on the server and if this is run then the backups will complete successfully.  We have been troubleshooting this by running a certain amount of the script and seeing which part affects the
backup and it seems that if the Weblogic (wls_reports) service is stopped then the backup will succeed but if it is running then the backup will fail and the above symptoms occur.
Another point which may help is that there is a pre-production server which resides on a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V standalone server, has the same scripts and installation of Oracle but backs up without any issues.
I have experienced VSS writer failures before with VM backups but I have not seen this before.  It is not intermittent and I can find no work around to alleviate the problem of having no backup (except stopping this service or shutting the server down,
but as it is a production server this is not practical).
If anyone has experienced this before or have any suggestions / advice it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi Chris
I have exactly the same issue.
    2008 R2 Server running Oracle
    6 node 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with CSV
Exact same errors and popup "format disk" message.
    DPM2012 R2
I also have some other VM's on the same cluster which do back up through DPM
The only difference I can see is the server which has the issue has a legacy network adapter.
Production server so cannot make any changes until later but will add new adapter and report back.
Interesting about the Weblogic service, may test this also.
    Cheers
    Kev.
