DPM Database Restore issue
Hi All,
I did A DPM server upgrade from 2008 to 2012 R2 and I freshly installed DPM on it now but when I try to restore the back up to the 2008 R2 database i am getting the following error -

How do i resolve this
Hello,
Which SQL Server instance did you used for the DPM database? For Systme Center 2012 R2 -DPM, it requires a dedicated instance of 64-bit SQL Server as follows:
SQL Server 2012 with SP1 (11.0.3000)—Standard or Enterprise edition.
SQL Server 2008 R2 with SP2 (10.50.4000)—Standard or Enterprise edition.
Reference:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758176.aspx
Please try to install the latest service pack for the SQL Server
and then restore the database again.

Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.Looks critical. If you look in the SQL Server error, you will find a stackdump. Not that it is likely to make that wiser.
There are three possible causes for this error:
1) A bad memory board on the machine you are running the restore on.
2) A plain bug in SQL Server.
3) The backup is damaged.
I would find a different server (which is not on the same VM host) to run the restore on. If the same problem occurs, we can rule out the first. If possible I would try an instance of a later version of SQL Server.
I would then try to back up the database to a different destination. I would also run DBCC CHECKDB on the database.
The key here is that you should work on finding the root cause for this error, because it does not happen out of the blue. When it comes to the possibility of a bug in SQL Server, I like to add that the likelihood that SQL Server would crash on a good back
is small. It's much more likely that it crashes on a corrupt backup.

Agent updates not available after restoring DPM database
Hi,
I am using DPM 2012 R2 which I have recently successfully updated to version 4.2.1297.0 (A hotfix installed to resolve an issue with Rollup 5).
I updated 3 agents successfully and planned to do the remaining 8 at a later date. However after updating the first 3 I was trying to resolve a reporting issue which I did successfully and I carried out a DPM database restore in the process followed
by a DPMsync -sync command.
I am now planning to update the remaining 8 agents but under the management tab the agent status is now showing as OK instead of Update Available as it did previously before the restore. I have checked the protected clients and they do not have the 4.2.1297.0
version installed (I checked this in case the installation had occurred). I then decided I would try and re-install the hotfix on the DPM server (kb3040326) but it seems I can't first uninstall the update on it's own so will have to uninstall DPM altogether.
I have tried to reinstall the hotfix again on the DPM server without removing it first and I get a message advising:
"A required hotfix KB3021791 is missing. Install it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3021791"
This update refers to Update Rollup 5 for DPM 2012 R2 which, again, is already installed on the DPM server and appears under Add/Remove programs.
It seems that since the restore the DPM server is aware that the Rollup and subsequent hotfixes are installed but the DPM application is not (although when I click the About DPM button, the version is 4.2.1297.0). I am unable to update the agents through
the DPM GUI with the latest hotfix as it is not available to them and I am reluctant to install the latest version directly onto the clients without sorting this problem out first.
If anyone has any advice that would be great,
Thanks. This isn't a bug in Leopard or it's recent updates so it's not something you should expect to see fixed in a subsequent release. However, you're not the only one who has found there to be problems after an update and assumed the update was responsible when it's either coincidental, or simply highlighted a problem that existed on the system previously.
First thing to try when any device or ports appear to vanish on the system is to perform an SMC reset:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
Since the SMC (System Management Controller) looks after all the internal devices, when it goes wrong it can cause very bizarre apparent failures! Resetting usually resolves these. Give that a try and post back to let us know. -
Restoring pre-migration DPM Database - Reporting Tab issue
Before migration, upgraded DPM 2010 to 2012 thru to 2012 R2. Took backup of database.
Built new Windows 2012 R2, SQL 2012 SP1 & DPM 2012 R2. While database is blank, DPM seems to work fine.
Restored pre-migration backup of DPM database over this new blank database. Most of DPM seems fine so far. Tape autoloader and attached disks are recognised and previous backups are all available. Protection Groups seem fine.
Accessing the reporting tab causes MMC to quit with error.

Accessing reporting using Internet Explorer and the URL for Reporting in SQL seems Okay.
Seeing as the database restore is the single factor that causes functionality to break I have been trying to ascertain what I might correct incside the pre-migration database.
While the new machine has the same computer name, the accounts for services and SQL were changed in line with what was suggested/recommended by the setup comments I came across (domain accounts instead of local etc.) So there would be a discrepancy between
the pre-migration security accounts and the new servers security accounts.
Should I try and correct this specific issue and can anyone help with that (seeing as rest seems to be working okay)?
OR
Can you point me to the recommended steps that I should follow (post-restore) to get this setup working for reporting? You're not alone. I have the exact same issue (report tab results in MMC crash) after upgrading from DPM 2012sp1 to DPM 2012R2.
I installed fresh windows 2012r2, then installed DPM 2012sp1, restored database, then upgraded to DPM 2012r2. Now I can't access the report TAB even though
http://dpmserver/reports works just fine for viewing DPM reports.
My error codes are identical to what you posted.

Can I restore a DPM database from DPM 2012 directly to DPM 2012 R2?
HI,
I have to completely reinstall SQL and DPM on a server. I know the backups are OK on the storage, and I know I have a good backup of the database (dpmbackup -db, etc.)
It was running on DPM 2012, no SP1 (I think), I have anyway to upgrade it to 2012 R2. I'd like to know if it is possible to restore the database with "dpmsync -restoredb -dbloc..." directly into DPM 2012 R2. I would install
DPM 2012 R2 directly instead or installing DPM 2012, restoring DB, installing UR3, installing SP1, Installing UR3 for SP1... and finally upgrading to 2012 R2... Long run with a lot of possibilities of issues.
I just can't find the answer... Somebody knows if it is possible?
Thanks a lot for you help!
Patrick Brodeur
Patrick BrodeurHi,
<snip>
I ran into problems upgrading from DPM 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2.
<snip>
I assume this was the virtual machine ? You should troubleshoot that and once that is upgraded, you can restore that DB on the physical machine. Make sure it's the same machine name and on the network before performing the upgrade.

9i Database - Restore to a new host, validating RMAN backup
Hi all,
I could use your help, for any of you who remember how to do this in 9i. On one of my production databases, running 9.2.0.6.0, I have a nightly RMAN script that writes the backup to a large shared drive (this is on a Windows 2003 server). This backup uses a recovery catalog.
I have a test server, and I want to try and restore last night's backup on this test server, without touching the recovery catalog - purely as a means to go through the recovery process, and to validate our backups (this is also for SOX compliance, as this database is for the financial system).
I have been looking through the 9i documentation, and was hoping to have some detailed steps here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmrecov.htm#1007514
but I don't see a lot of information there.
I believe that this should be a rather simple process. On the test server, I have installed the 9.2.0.6 software, and created the Oracle Service using the same name as production. The test server can also see the shared drive that houses the backup files from the production system.
Here are the steps I am trying, please let me know what I need to change. Thanks all!!

I have made some progress, I am able to restore the control file now - what I am doing, is copying the autobackup controlfile from the network drive over onto the server locally (E:\oracle\ora92\database\BACKUPCONTROL.ORA), then I am able to restore the controlfile with this:
restore controlfile from 'E:\oracle\ora92\database\BACKUPCONTROL.ORA';
And I can see that it restores all 3 of my controlfiles.
The next step would be to do the database restore. When I issue the "restore database;" command, I can see that it lists out all of the datafiles that it needs to restore from the backup set, but then after about a minute, I see these error messages pop up:

I have confirmed that the backup files on the network drive are not Read-Only, I have full Read/Write privileges on them. So once again, I am stumped.
Any thoughts? I might go ahead and log an SR for this, to try and get it resolved.

How to backup DPM database for restore DPM server (2012 R2).
I try: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758162.aspx
To back up the DPM database
On the computer where your DPM database is located, do one of the following:
If the DPM database is on the DPM server
On the DPM server, open an elevated command prompt window, go to cd <system drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin, and run
DPMBackup.exe -db

Backup DPM database to Azure?
Is there any way to backup the DPM database to Azure using the Azure backup agent? We previously used an online backup solution from HP, and it had a way to backup your local DPM database directly to the cloud to ensure that you were always able to recover
the workloads you were storing there. It appears that with DPM you need to handle the DPM database backup completely separate, but I wanted to make sure I was not missing something. Thanks. What I've found is that if all the databases are there, but you can't find them doing a search. Because of that, it seems as though you just have to start doing restores and see what you get to find the correct database. The one piece of data
you do get when presented with the replica restore list, is that each replica shows the time it was backed up. Based on this I'm thinking you could use this backup time as an identifier, but it will take some specific planning in the protection groups.
Not a very efficient solution by any means, but I guess the data is in the cloud and that's what matters. I'm also tying to figure out how to restore my DPM server and hook up it back up to Azure to do elegant restores from the cloud, but I'm having
trouble with that as well. That's a topic for a different post I suppose though. I keep hoping there's something I'm missing with all of this, but so far that's where I'm at. -
PREEMPTIVE_OS_GETPROCADDRESS SQL database restoration hangs
Hi,
We are using SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 in our production environment and Litespeed tool for SQL database backup.
Today we are facing an issue in database restoration. while the database restore is 100% done, it hungs and the database in the restoring status itself. We checked the wait-type and found out "PREEMPTIVE_OS_GETPROCADDRESS" for Query type xp_restore_database.
It was working fine till yesterday and today suddenly we got this error. We restarted the restore job and again we are facing the same issue.
Can you please help on this.Hello,
Try the workaround posted on the following resource:
http://commweb-ps3.us.dell.com/techcenter/data-protection/f/4786/p/19555044/20552862.aspx
This error has been documented on other third-party backup tools. Please read the following post and the comments:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/psssql/archive/2010/07/21/why-does-preemptive-os-getprocaddress-show-a-large-accumulation.aspx
Hope this helps.

Unable to connect to DPM Database through Remote Admin Console
Hello all,
I have a fresh install of DPM 2012 server. I am able to locally start the Admin Console and work with the DPM server, however when I attempt this remotely, I get the following error:
Unable to connect to the DPM database on <database instances name> (ID: 33210).
I have verified this is a firewall issue by disabling the firewall and connecting. I would, however, like to create firewall rules for just the ports that are necessary, and have not been able to find the correct ports by following tutorials online.
Any help is appreciated.
I have attempted the tutorial here: http://blog.patricknielsen.net/2011/10/dpm-2010unable-to-connect-to-dpm.html which seemed on the spot, but brings no
joy.
Much appreciated,
JHi,
The blog should have worked, but add the program exceptions in windows firewall on the DPM server, again but don't restrict the port usage.

I've managed to bring up the SAP now after changing some parameters
in the instance profile that are pointing to D:\. It's now up and
running, but the dispatcher is in yellow colour. The status
is "Running, Message Server connection ok, Dialog Queue time: 0.00 sec,
J2EE status info unavailable". I did not select Java during the
installation. Only ABAP was selected.
I am able to login to the R/3 system now. I notice that there are some
parameters in the instance profile are related to the Java like
rdisp/j2ee_start, login/accept_sso2_ticket and etc. Is it possible that
database backup that I used to restore was from a ABAP + JAVA system?
Please see below for the dev_disp

passwordHi,
We have had several customers report this after installing DPM 2012 R2.
To get past the below error while scheduling reports to be mailed.
Reporting Services Server cannot connect to the DPM database.
To repair the configuration, follow steps for repairing DPM from DPM Setup Help.
ID: 3001
Perform the following steps as necessary:
1. Created a new local group called "DPMDBReaders$<DPMServerName>"
2. Created a new user called, "DPMR$<DPMServerName>" and added this user to DPMDBReader group that we created on step 1.
3. Open SQL management studio and add the DPMDBReaders$<DPMServerName group to Logins under Security in SQL Management Studio.
4. Modify the properties and under General – change the default database to the current DPMDB name.
5. Under User Mapping – select the current DPMDB name and check the db_datareader checkbox.
6. In SQL Management Studio, navigate to the Databases > DPMDB > Security > Users > and select the DPMDBReaders$<DPMServerName>" group.
Right-click the DPMDBReaders$<DPMServerName>" group and select properties. Under the
Securables section, click on Search. On the add objects dialog, click OK.
On the Select Objects dialog, click the Objects type, then check the
stored procedure checkbox. Browse and add the following two stored procedures
“Prc_MOM_Heartbeat_Get” and “prc_MOM_ProductionServer_Get”. Grant the Execute permission for both of the stored procedures added.
7. In SQL Reporting Services Configuration manager, under Report Manager URL - click on the link to open the portal (http://localhost/Reports)
i. Click on the DPMReoprts_GUID to open the DPM reports.
ii. Click on the DPMReporterDataSource
iii. On the poperties page, enabled "Credentials stored securely in the report server" on DPMReporterDataSource configuration page and added “DPMR$<DPMServerName>” user account that we created in step 2.
iv. tick "Use as Windows credentials when connecting to the data source."
v. Click ‘Test connection’ on the same page to verify whether it can connect successfully.
8. In SQL Reporting configuration manager - change the Service Account to use build-in account: Network Service
9. Reboot the DPM Server.
10. You should then be able to schedule e-mailed reports.
Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. Regards, Mike J. [MSFT] This

Database performance issue (8.1.7.0)
Hi,
We are having tablespace "payin" in our database (8.1.7.0) .
This tablespace is the main Tablespace of our database which is dictionary managed and heavily accessed by the user SQL statements.
Now we are facing the database performance issue during the peak time (i.e. at the month end) when no. of users use to run the no. of large reports.
We have also increased the SGA sufficiently on the basis of RAM size.
This tablespace is heavily accessed for the reports.
Now my question is,
Is this performance issue is because the tablespace is "dictionary managed" instead of locally managed ?
because when i monitor the different sessions through OEM, the no. of hard parses is more for the connected users.
Actually the hard parses should be less.
In oracle 8.1.7.0 Can we convert dictionary managed tablespace to locally managed tablespace ?
by doing so will the problem will get somewhat resolve ? will it reduce the overhead on the dictionary tables and on the shared memory ?
If yes then how what is procedure to convert the tablespace from dictionary to locally managed ?
With RegardsIf your end users are just running reports against this tablespace, I don't think that the tablespace management (LM/DM) matters here. You should be concerned more about the TEMP tablespace (for heavy sort operations) and your shared pool size (as you have seen hard parses go up).
As already stated, get statspack running and also try tracing user sessions with wait events. Might give you more clues.

Cisco IDS/IPS regular expressions
Is there any way to perform a NOT on a regular expression match. For instance, in PCRE it would be !"/[A-Z]+/i". I cannot determine if there is a valid way to do this on a Cisco IDS regex string. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
