DPM doesn't free un-allocated space

Hello,
I am using DPM2012 but having issue related to Storage pool. 18 TB DAS attached with DPM server but all space are full and now 1% unallocated space available. To reclaim space, I stop protection for all VM's under 1 protection group which size was
around 1.5 TB and created new PG and added all those VM's in this new PG but now the method of backup this protection group directly going to tape and not using disk space. Once full backup done on tape by using this new PG, I tried to delete those VM's which
were sitting on inactive protection but after deletion few VM's from there still no change on unallocated space.
Kindly let me know any relevant solution for it as I am running out of space and I really need to add few more servers.

Hi,
The Issue is that the VM's were most likely co-located on one or more replica volumes. Each VM would be in a separate folder on the replica. If you had multiple replica volume some VM's would be on one replica and other VM's on a different
replica. By deleting "some" VM's, DPM is just deleting the space on the replica for the VM's you deleted. If just one VM is on a replica, then DPM cannot free that replica and recovery point volumes. You will need remove
all VM's that are co-located on the same replica before DPM will delete the volumes and have it show up as available space I the storage pool.

I have tried out Hyper-V for the first time to install Ubuntu desktop. During the installation process, 10GB of space is allocated. I believe this space would have been created as a separate partition and formatted

I am not sure of the unnamed, unused volume. Hence I listed all.
However Diskpart tool in command prompt does not show the last one [ 8gb]. Does this mean if this was allocated
to Virtual desktop? Please help

You must delete the VHDx that you created when you created the VM.
This is the virtual disk that Ubuntu was installed into - you will not see this as a volume, you will see this as a VHDx file.

Deleting files doesn't free up storage space

I'm a long-time Mac user with a 2010 MacBook Pro (320GB) now running Mavericks. About a week ago I screwed up my iTunes and tried to restore from Time Machine. But I can't because I only have 38GB free and the TM backup is about 40. So I moved big files over to my attached drive to free up space. But no matter how much I move (and it's been tens of GB) I still only have 35-38GB free (It varies across this range for no apparent reason). The storage allocated to Movies and Pictures decreases, but rather than free space increasing, the mysterious category Backups does. I now have 124GB allocated to Backups. Yes, I delete the files and empty trash after moving all these files from my system. And I restart and even wait overnight hoping that the system cleanup routines that run in the dark of night will do their magic. I have tried several times doing the TM restore of iTunes and each time I get the message that I don't have enough free space. Can anyone tell me how to break free of this. I would sure be greatful. I just found out the way to easily fix the ' actual free space not showing ' problem in Mac OS X 10.9.2.
1. Turn off your macbook ( i used a macbook ) and remove all external storage devices ( portable hard drive, usb drive, flash drive etc )
2. Turn on your macbook and wait for ' WELCOME SCREEN SOUND ', and soon after you heard it press and hold ' SHIFT ' key on your keyboard. You must not press the key before welcome screen sound. It should be pressed just after the sound.
3. It will take you to a white color window with some progress bar at bottom. This may take few minutes.
4. Macbook will take you to the login page where you need to type your password to enter. Top right corner you will see a text ' Safe Boot Mode ' in RED. If you see so you're doing it right, if no please follow the procedure again.
5. Then computer will take you to desktop but you will notice that the computer performs very slowly. Then click and open ' TRASH BIN '. You will see all your deleted files are still in your Trash Bin. So click ' EMPTY ' button on top right corner of the window.
6. You are done ! Right click on the Hard Drive Icon on desktop and then GET INFO. You will be happy to see your empty space back.

When I delete files on a USB, it doesn't free up memory on the stik. I find I have to empty the entire stik, use Disk Utility to 'erase' it, then transfer back the files I removed to free up all the space on the stik. Is this the best practice?

It frustrates me that if I delete a file from a USB, it doesn't free up the memory on the stik. I have been removing all the files from the stik, opening Disk Utility and erasing the empty USB. That frees up the entire stik. Then I have been transferring back the files I removed from the stik. The result is that I have memory available to use again. It seems to me this is an unnecessarily complicated and time consuming way to get the result. Is there a shorter way to do this?

Thank you for the question. Have you been emptying your trash after deleting the items? For the item to be removed from your USB device, you will need to empty the trash on your MacBook Pro after you delete the items, as described in the featured discussion below. Your USB device will still need to be connected when you do this:
Choose Empty Trash from the Finder menu. Unlike Windows, the trash needs to be emptied manually for any drive other than one mounted through the network.

Allocated space without DBA_DATA_FILES

Hello good folks,
I'm building a process that will check the space of the tablespaces and send feedback. So my question is this : how can I have the allocated space of a tablespace without using dba_data_files?
My user account doesn't have access to dba_data_files and will not have select permission granted any time soon.
So how can I circumvent this restriction?

Helio : I don't see how creating a table would help my situation. I'm not planning on having access to that view.
Paul : I don't want to enter in too many details, but basically, the DBA departments wants us to monitor the tablespace usage without giving us the tools to do it so they can bash my department for blowing quotas. They give us reports indicating the allocated space, which is how I know my information is higher than supposed.
I want to create a process that will check daily and give us feedback so we can act on it if need be.
I could always just check the Free space, but I would prefer having a complete solution that includes the allocated space.
Asking to the DBA for rights on the views is always possible, but I would rather do without if it's possible.
Eduardo : I'm beginning to think that this may well be the final answer to this question, meaning there is no solution without asking for help. Damn things can be complicated for no just reason sometimes.

I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives. Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location. Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want. Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing. Then quit and restart itunes. If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not. If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)). Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.

Well it probably means exactly what it says... How much free space is there on your hard drive where the iTunes Media folder resides? I believe there is also an obscure bug that can occur when software doesn't read the true value of the free space properly, and the workaround is, perversely, to duplicate some content so that with less actual free space the software in question perceives it as more. I've no idea if iTunes is affected by such a bug.

Sounds like the Time Machine Local Backup. Try turning Time Machine Off in System Preferences to verify.

But, your real problem is
I forgot to mention that I tried to use Disk Utility to Verify Disk, but it cannot. I get red errors that say the MacHD is corrupt and needs to be repaired. It says that in order to do this I need to use the Disk Utility on the install disk, but Lion doesn't have one!
Boot into Lion's Recovery (Hold ⌘R on Boot), select Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click [Repair Disk]

That's an issue of not having enough available space on the iPad itself, not in your iCloud account. (You can check the available space on your iPad by going to Settings>General>Usage and checking the Available number under "Storage" at the top.)
To free up space on your iPad, you'll have to delete something or sync it off with iTunes (such as some of your music or other iTunes media).

Deleting at the project level essentially just deletes render files, which can be sizable, but certainly doesn't cover everything involved.

Yes, you can do this, and it does delete all the original media (if copied to the event) and transcoded media (e.g., optimized/proxy). You can also do this within FCPX itself by selecting the event, and from the File menu choose "Move Event to Trash." FCPX will warn you that any projects that might use the event will have a missing media icon, but it sounds like you are also deleting the projects as well.

I'd be careful here: LR references files. It can copy them, like from an SD card to your hard drive, but it doesn't necessarily make duplicates. So when you say you "transferred" those files "into" LR it just means you referenced existing files. And if you delete those they're gone, unless you've made copies. LR does not import files by copying them into a managed library like Aperture does.

Apps can't be deleted from iCloud as they only reside in the App store. Also, the apps themselves aren't taking up space in your iCloud account. They only thing in your iCloud account would be the app data that is backed up as part of their iCloud backup, but this generally doesn't use much space. You can check how much is being used, and eliminate specific apps from being included in the backup, by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage on their device, tapping the name of their device under Backups, then checking the apps listed under Backup Options (tap Show All Apps to see them all). Turn an app to Off to exclude its app data from being backed up.

If it is asking for the screen-lock passcode then:
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

My mac is running low in memory space and mostly of the bigger occupants of my laptop are my music collection. Therefore, i want to back it up or transfer it to my external hard drive so i can free up some space. And just play it when connected to my external hard drive. How will i do it?

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Note that moving your library to another drive is not "backing up". Backing up is making a second (or more) copy of your files onto another drive because you know that some day, without warning, your hard drive will suddenly refuse to work or get stolen and you will be sooo happy you spent the $100 in getting a backup drive which will have saved all your files (such as irreplaceable photos).

I would do it manually. As you can see from turingtest2's post, some duplicates are not really duplicates.
