DPM Servers on Virtual Machines

Hello,
My name is Murat and I am responsible for DPM servers at my company. We use DPM for file, sql, exchange and Hyper-V snapshoot backups. Our DPM servers are
physical servers on the other hand my IT manager wants DPM servers on Hyper-V virtual machines.
Is there supported? for example My DPM servers DPM1-2-3-4 will run on Hyper-V VM and attached Storage for disks. then start to backup.
thanks

Hello Murat,
DPM 2012 is supported on Hyper-V Virtual Machine. You can check hardware requirements

  • AVHD files not being deleted by Hyper-V when DPM backs up virtual machines

    Hi,
I understand DPM uses checkpoints to backup Hyper-V virtual machines.
We have seen a few instances whereby the AVHD files that are created at the time DPM backs up the VM are not being deleted on the CSV disk.
There are no checkpoints associated with the virtual machine in Hyper-V settings.
We did delete one of these AVHD files on a non-production system and it was successful, the AVHD files are not being used by the virtual machine.
Is it safe to delete these AVHD files? Anyone experienced anything similar?

    Hi
Could you please let su know if you have acrried out any ILR operations?
When you recover a VHD of a virtual machine that has Hyper-V snapshots, .avhd files are not displayed in the
Recoverable Items pane, but DPM recovers the parent VHD and all the associated .avhd files.
Just want to confirm that these avhd files are not coresponding to recovery process.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Virtual machine - can you backup to disk then to TAPE

I'm tasked with using DPM 2012 R2 to backup a 16 node 2012 R2 hyper-v CSV cluster. I will need to incorporate tapes in this scenario
my DPM server is a virtual machine, on a 2 node cluster.
what type of tape device can we use? FC or ISCSI?
Any ideas please let me know
    ANNCEX

AFAIK, DPM being deployed as a virtual machine should
work fine with ISCSI device. If the given device doesn't have ISCSI capability, you can utilize
certain 3-party tool in order to make device visible via ISCSI protocol. We're using similar approach with Veeam in our environment.

  • Recommendation for Tape drives/library connected to DPM on virtual machine

    Hi,
we are running DPM as a virtual machine in an hyper-v environment. Now we want to add long term storage -> tape. I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might
not be the best way to go.
We would prefere to use a "traditional" tape library. The best option I found would be iSCSI tape libraries but the only ones I found started at around 6000 US$. As I will be backing up only up to 1.5 TB/night I don't want to spend that much money. In addition
I don't know if they are really going to work.
The other option I saw was to use a SCSI to iSCSI Bridge and connect a SCSI tape library that way. I found solutations for around 3000 US$. Which is still a lot but better then the iSCSI Tape drives.
Does someone else have recommendations or some other ideas what works best? The only entries I found so far were from 2008 and I am quite sure that things have changed since then.

I looked at virtual tape libraries (firestreamer) but as I want to store the "tapes" externally for DR scenario I thought that this might not be the best way to go.
Actually, it might, you can use removable media to host the virtual tape files created by firestreamer and take the removable media offsite.  So instead of rotating physical tapes, you rotate physical removable media.
    Closing for housekeeping.

  • DPM locking Virtual Machines - Cluster Backup

    Hi All,
    Server 2012 r2
    DPM2012
    Cluster Backups
We have seen an issue I've read in a few forums where VHDs are getting locked when performing a cluster backup.  Unfortunately we're unable to reproduce the issue and it happens irregularly (once every month or so).
Within HyperV manager the status of the VM is "Backing Up" or "Creating VSS Snapshot", however the VM is unable to be managed at all.  When connecting via the console, the VM looks up, but you're unable to get to a log on screen.
I've found that by restarting the DPM agent on the host, restarting the job from DPM (which forces a failed state), you're then able to start the VM from the failover cluster manager.  Within Virtual Machine Manager, the VM is listed as "Missing",
though once you start through the cluster, it's all good.
Once the VM is up and you log on to it, there is nothing in the event log for the time the backup has been running.  The last event ID in the log, references VSS issues.
We've seen the issue on 2 VMs, which both happen to be XenDesktop Controllers, so unsure if there is something local causing it.
Wondering if anyone was able to get a result for this.  I've patched the servers and logged a job with MS, but they are being painful with the troubleshooting process and the fact it's an irregular issue which we can't replicate doesn't help.

    Hi,
Please make sure this hotfix is applied.
Hyper-V virtual machine backup leaves the VM in a locked state

  • Restore of virtual machine with checkpoints W2012 R2 DPM 2012R2

    Hi
We have some windows 2012 R2 hyper-v standalone hosts where we running a loads of VMs on.
We backing them up with DPM 2012 R2 with "hyper-v virtual machines backup"
We have some training machines that was getting corrupted and we need to restore then, is it possible to restore the machines and include
     the checkpoints?
When I was trying to restore the vhdx that are C: DPM also restored 2 avhdx files that I suppose is the checkpoint files, but then I then create t new VM from the vhdx the checkpoints do not
    pops up.
    I know that in W 2008 R2 hyper-v and DPM 2012 SP1 it was not possible.
But is it possible now with Hyper-v 2012 R2 and DPM 2012R2?
    thank

Just for information, it is possible to restore VMs and retain checkpoints. I find out how to do that now.

  • Help! Azure Cloud Services and Virtual Machine Web Servers Load Balancing

I have a cloud service. I have two virtual machines setup as web servers each with IIS installed. I have configured my domain registrar to point my domain name to the cloud service IP address. I also went into the endpoints of each virtual machine and verified
that I have http port 80 setup on both in a load balanced set.
I am unable to access websites on either server at this point. DNS propogation site shows "error: token mismatch"...this has been setup since yesterday and still error.
Can anyone assist me in where I went wrong? Am I confused to how the cloud service should work? I am assuming it will allow me to load balance the two virtual machines in the way I have configured above. Please help!!!!

  • Moving virtual machine Pagefiles to seperate VHD for exclusion by DPM

    Hi,
I have read the MS documentation regarding excluding pagefile churns from virtual machines to increase performance of backups and reduce storage space required and I would like to implement this within our environment.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj721498.aspx
However, when I move the pagefiile from the system disk onto a seperate VHD I get the following warning:
"If you disable the paging file or set the initial size to less than 400 megabytes and a system error occurs, Windows might not record details that could help identify the problem. Do you want to continue?"
As I understand things this means that I may not get a crash dump if a BSOD occurs. Is this correct, and if so how can I mitigate? How have others managed this scenario, do you just live with the fact that you won't get a dump file in the event of a problem?
    Thanks in advance.

"If you disable the paging file or set the initial size to less than 400 megabytes and a system error occurs, Windows might not record details that could help identify the problem. Do you want to continue?"
AFAIK, all you need to do is to ensure that the separate drive does have a paging file on it, and then this message can be ignored.
Once the the page-file for a virtual machine is moved to a different VHD, you should exclude it from DPM by using the Set-DPMGlobalProperty cmdlet.
Otherwise, you can use backup tools that can do page-file exclusion in automatic fashion, like Veeam, for instance. We use the said software in our environments and pretty happy with the functionality it provides.

  • Monitoring Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs

    Hi all,
could anyone tell me if we can monitor Oracle Virtual Machine for Solaris servers and LDOMs with only Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c, or shall we need to install Ops Center ?
    Thank you in advance.

I had the same issue. Upgrading Virtual box from 4.1.16 to 4.1.20 solved the problem.

  • Excuse me ! Can a virtual machine run on the more physical servers ?

If a physical server has two CPUs , I have two physical servers for OracleVM group.
Can Oracle VM create a virtual machine which have 4 CPUs ?
This is a kind of HPC (High Performance Computing ) .
    Is it possible ?
    Thank you !!!!!!!

Unless this is some trick question then yes you can.

  • Virtual Machine Manager to manage Hyper-V 2012 R2 Servers

    Hi,
I am trying to create an environment wherein I have few Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts, Windows Server 2012 hosts, and Windows Server 2008 hosts. All are registered to a AD server.
On Windows Server 2012 host, I have created a virtual machine on which System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 SP1 is running. This Virtual Machine Manager is perfectly able to manage Windows Server 2008 hosts.
However when tried to add Windows Server 2012 hosts and Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts, it gives the following error:
    Error (2916)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent windows2012.test.com was lost.
WinRM: URL: [http://windows2012.test.com:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [Associate], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/scvmm/AgentManagement]
    Unknown error (0x80338012)
    Recommended Action
Ensure that the WS-Management service and the agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic.
This problem can also be caused by WMI service crash. Ensure that KB 982293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982293) is installed on the machine if it is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
If the error persists, reboot windows2012.test.com and then try the operation again.
    Checked:
    > WS-Management service is running
    > VMM agent got installed
    Questions:
    1. Whether System Center 2012 SP1 - Virtual Machine Manager is compatible to manage Hyper-V Sever 2012 and Windows 2012 R2 Server.
    2. What is the latest version of VMM to manage Hyper-V Sever 2012 and Windows 2012 R2 Server.

    Hello,
I have installed VMM 2012 R2, this is also not allowing me to add and manage Server 2012 R2 hosts. However it is perfectly able to manage Server 2008 host.
It gives following error when tried to add Server 2012 R2 hosts:
    Error (2916)

  • Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

I have a 3 node cluster that has replica setup to replicate to another cluster off-site.
Suddenly one of the servers is not replicating with the error:
Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE). (Virtual Machine ID CC0FD4CC-F9B7-4C68-ABE8-B7D52A87899F)
All other servers are replicating fine so there cannot be a permissions or connectivity issue between the 2 clusters.
This server has 2TB of data so I'd rather not have to start the replication again.
    Does anyone have any pointers?
    Thanks.

  • Can I assign several physical storage locations for each virtual machine when using the replication-feature from Hyper-V 2012 R2?

    Hi everyone,
I have 2x physical servers running Hyper-V 2012 R2. Each hosts several virtual machines. The VHDs of the VMs are stored on several dedicated physical disks to have a performance boost. For exampe if VM A has two VHDs attached I made sure that the VHDs are
on different physical disks to have them not slow-down each other in case of intensive disk accesses.
So far so good. I was looking forward to the replication-feature. The idea is to have the two physical servers have their primary running VMs being replicated to the other physical server and vice-versa. I was hoping to have the chance to choose for each
individual VM where the replicated VHD will be stored. But instead I can only see the one location/path which is configured in Hyper-V Manager when I activate the replication-feature on the server.
Is there by any chance a way how to select the storage location for each VHD/VM if using the replication-feature of Hyper-V 2012 R2?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Sebastian

Secondly, you could replicate different VMs to different storage locations to perform some of the disk balancing you are trying to perform.  Lastly, you could copy the vhd file to a different location
    before starting the VM.

    Hi Tim,
thanks for the reply. Sorry, but I had some other tasks to take care of, so I wasn't paying enough attention to this thread.
The part I quoted from your reply sounds exactly like the action I'd like to perform, but as you pointed out before this should not be possible.
How can I perform the action (replicating each VM to a storage location) as you mentioned secondly? To sum it up again:
2x physical machines carrying severel HDDs
8+ VMs spread to run on the 2x servers
when setting up replication I can only set the storage-location from server A on B and vice versa B on A
    Thanks again for your reply.
    Cheers,
    Sebastian
