  • DPM 2012 R2 Crashes after upgrade.

I recently upgraded from DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 2.  The basic process was to backup the DB, uninstall DPM, upgrade the OS from 2008 R2 to 2012. Reinstall DPM 2012 SP1, restore the DB making sure everything works and then upgrade to
DPM 2012 R2.  I did this on my primary server first which originally seemed to work well and then followed up on my secondary server. For whatever reason I had trouble on the secondary and ended up installing DPM clean on a new os and that server is working
perfectly. On my primary however I am getting the following error 1 time each day.
Event Log shows MSDPM Error ID 945
It appears to be failing due to a missing stored procedure 'dbo.prc_SMTE_ComputeDailyTrend'.  The stored procedure does not exist on either of my DPM servers.  I'm guessing this is something hanging around in the DB from prior to the upgrade but
I can't seem to track it down.

  • An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)) After DPM 2012 SP1 to R2 Upgrade

    Hi,
We have upgraded DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2 and OS is Windows 2012 standard.
Now in File Protection Group, we receive error
"An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057))".
This happens to only one Drive(X: Drive) of the PG server, other drive(Z: Drive) backup is working fine.
    We tried,
Deleted entire protection group and recreated ,
Ran consistency job 2 to 3 times.
    Ran Synchronize with consistency check.
But every time It failed. Before upgrade it was working fine.
    Thanks

    Hi
I would suggest opening a new case with MS to allow the DPM team to further look into the issue. Also the DPM 2012 R2 RollUp which addresses the (0x80070057)
issue is Rollup 1 and the private will not be needed after applying Rollup 1. The Roll up is found here

  • DPM 2012 R2 Upgrade - Scheduled jobs not running

    Hi,
We're having an issue after upgrading to DPM 2012 R2 where the scheduled jobs are not running.
    We're running Server 2012 R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2.
Looking at SQL jobs, if we run the job step we get an error.
    Message
[136] Job 18822c3e-8fe 7-47a2-bb6e-0feccecc2952 reported: The process could not be created for step 1 of job 0xA746B176EAD99943A14A57DAF684829F (reason: %1 is not a valid Win32 application)
However, if we place quotes around the triggerjob.exe path in the SQL default job step:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\bin\TriggerJob.exe" 9b30d213-b836-4b9e-97c2-db03c3eb39d7 18822c3e-8fe7-47a2-bb6e-0feccecc2952 server.domainname.com
    It is successful.
We've already uninstalled DPM 2012 R2 and re-installed, restored the database and run dpmsync -sync with the same result. We've checked the DCOM Config Launch and Activation Permissions for Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager Service
    and has full access.
Has anyone else had this issue and been able to resolve it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • DPM 2012 R2 upgrade fails to run dpmsync -restoredb.

    Hi,
Im experiencing some problems when trying to restore dpmdb.bak
Original setup was Win2012 Std. with DPM 2012 SP1 and latest RU, on a physical HP DL 360 Gen8
    SQL is a local instance 2008 R2
Upgrade failed at the very end saying "failed to create dpm service", it was suggested that the probable cause
was that the system was pending reboot wich it was not!
I followed the error message and uninstalled DPM, rebooted and reinstalled DPM2012 R2, during install I had to point out an existing DPM instance/database wich I did, klicked the "check and install" and went on installing without any further problems.
I also checked "retain data" during the install.
When trying to restore the db using syntax "dpmsync -restoredb -dbloc c:\temp\dpmdb.bak -instancename msdpm2012 -dpmdbname dpmdb" I get the following error.
    "Error ID: 454
DpmSync failed to connect to the specified SQL Server instance. Make sure that y
ou have specified a valid SQL server instance associated with DPM and you are lo
gged on as a user with administrator privileges.
Detailed Error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while esta
blishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessi
ble. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured
to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could
not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I enabled Named Pipes and entered TCP/IP port 1433 in SQL configuration manager and ran the command again with the same result.
When checking the databse using SQL Mgmt. Studio I found out that there was now two databases, the original MSDPM and
a new db named MSDPM_Servername, confusion!
Now, my SQL knowledge is poor to say the least so I'm hoping that someone has a solution or a tip to push me forward.
Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Peter Åkerblom Stockholm.

    Additional information.
We found out that the dpmsync -restoredb command failed with reason "access denied", it could not overwrite the original db.
So we dropped the original db and moved it out of its default folder and ran the command again.
The dpmdb did this time in fact get restored to default path but some errors.
    From event log:
The description for Event ID 3750 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Version 4.1.3313.0 of the DPM database, and version 4.2.1205.0 of the DPM application are not compatible.
    Problem Details:
    <DatabaseVersionMismatch><__System><ID>29</ID><Seq>0</Seq><TimeCreated>2014-10-21 07:45:57</TimeCreated><Source>d:\btvsts\21011\private\product\engine\service\dll\servicemodule.cpp</Source><Line>183</Line><HasError>True</HasError></__System><DatabaseVersion>4.1.3313.0</DatabaseVersion><BinariesVersion>4.2.1205.0</BinariesVersion></DatabaseVersionMismatch>"
From what I understand a database version upgrade should be taken care of during dpmsync-restoredb but I must be miskaten.
Any suggestions on how to upgrade the databse ?
    Peter.

    Hi,
We have recently upgraded from DPM 2010 to 2012.  Since the upgrade we have been unable to create new protection groups or add new datasources to an existing group.  Existing backups are running without errors.
We have tried checking the DPM sql user account permissions as described in

In the DPM console we get the following error adding a VM to an existing protection group:

    Hi,
The error 0x8004230C VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED: Shadow copying the specified volume is not supported, can only come when trying to enable shadow copies on new volumes created when trying to add new datasources to protection.   Generally speaking
Only NTFS volumes greater that 1GB with a minimum of 300MB free space can be shadow copied, so something is going wrong with the volume creation / format process.  Please investigate that, see if two new volumes get created when protecting a new data
source, and the sizes are greated that 1GB and also verify it's formatted NTFS.

  • DPM 2012 R2 Crashes after upgrade - Tape Backup

    Hello guys,
    I have recently upgraded from DPM 2012 SP1 to DPM 2012 R2 Rollup 3 on Windows 2012 R2 (in-place upgrade)
The basic procedure was to backup the DB, uninstall DPM, install DPM 2012 R2, restore the DB.  re-sync all the inconsistent replicas and upgrade server agents. When it comes to the offsite tape backup for whatever reason every time the tape backup
commences it fails instantly with the below error and reports "Backup to Tape Failed"
"Event Log shows MSDPM Error ID 945"
It appears to be failing due to a missing stored procedure 'dbo.prc_SMTE_ComputeDailyTrend'.  The stored procedure does not exist on other DPM servers.  I'm guessing this is something hanging around in the DB from prior to the upgrade but I can't
seem to track it down.  Does anyone have any ideas upon how to resolve the issue?
The description for Event ID 945 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Unable to connect to the DPM database because of a general database failure.  Make sure that SQL Server is running and that it is configured correctly.

  • DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 Upgrade

    Hello
We did an in-place upgrade on a few of our DPM 2010 servers to DPM 2012 and it went well. In the Reporting section, we have configured tape management reports on a weekly basis. The issue is that the information on 'overdue tapes' is not mentioned in the
report which is now being sent. This issue persists on all the DPM servers that we upgraded. Any suggestion?
    Regards

  • DPM 2012 R2, upgrade OS from 2012 to 2012 R2

I have DPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012. Is an In-Place Upgrade of the Operating System from 2012 to 2012 R2 supported?
I assume the normal procedure of:
    Take DPM database backup.
    Uninstall DPM with retain data
    Upgrade/patch Operating System
    Re-install DPM 2012 r2
    Applies in this case?

    Hi,
That is correct, DPM does not support any in-place operating system upgrades, so the abbreviated steps you have outlined are correct.

  • Upgrade OS on DPM 2012 Server

I have a DPM 2012 server running on 2008 R2.  I would like to upgrade to DPM 2012 SP1.  From what I have read in the forums, to fully utilize SP1, the OS needs to be 2012.  I would like to do an in-place upgrade of the OS on my DPM 2012 server
before upgrading DPM to SP1.  Is this a supported upgrade path?  What do I need to do to DPM 2012 after the OS upgrade to 2012 to get DPM ready for the upgrade to SP1?
    Thanks
    Rob Nunley

As lync16 did, I too opted for reinstallation, I could not find a way to get DPM2012SP1 running on Windows 2008R2 upgraded to DPM2012R2 on Windows 2012R2. I reinstalled everything, but the restored database remained "not compatible" and I couldn't
find any information on how to upgrade it.
I waited for a quiet period (summer holiday) to ensure the users would not appeal to the short-term protection (disk replicas), and I made a few extra tape backups. I documented everything about my current DPM setup, deleted all replicas and reinstalled
everything to 2012R2. Incidentally, someone asked for a restore during the upgrade process, which afterwards, I could provide partly thanks to the great script found at this site:
    Catalog tapes in library powershell
It's a Powershell script that catalogs every tape that's mounted in the library, lists their contents including backup dates, and puts it in a text file. Using that documentation, those tapes could be quickly identified, imported and their contents read (which
DPM did surprisingly quickly for LTO5's).
Also, I would like to mention I was able to thoroughly test the entire upgrade process very well using VM's with this nice piece of software installed:Firestreamer - it emulates a
tape library, which enabled me to see what would happen if you try to read tapes from older DPM versions into new ones. Great piece of software.

  • Upgrading DPM 2010UR5 Agent to DPM2012R2UR1 Agent

    Hi all,
we are running DPM 2010UR5 Protection Agent on a Win2008R2 Server with Exchange 2010.
I have to upgrade the Agent in order to move backups to DPM 2012R2 UR1.Previously I wanted to uninstall the old Agent .
Unfortunately there is no option in Control Center/Software to uninstall the Agent - it is just listed under Updates.
    Because of that I tried:
    "Msiexec /x {72BF00D8-53E0-1539-F523-4347082BCC11}" an
    "Msiexec /x {72BF00D8-53E0-1539-F523-4347082BCC11} /qn /REBOOT=ReallySupress"
But i did not work either.
So, what would be a good way to upgrade DPM 2010UR5 Agent to DPM 2012R2 UR1 Agent?
    Thanks in advane
    regards
    /bkpfast

Can you try something like this?
    $reg = Get-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\*" | ? {$_.DisplayName -ne $null -and $_.DisplayName -like "*DPM Protection Agent*"}
    if ($reg -ne $null)
     $pkey = $reg.PSChildName
     cmd.exe /q /c "start /wait msiexec /x $pkey /quiet"
    Thanks.
BTW, how can you determine that the agent is still installed when you can't see it on "Add/Remove programs" window?

I have sysadmin rights on the DB, and am a domain admin, running the install as admin. I have also tried running it without the backup of the db, but that didnt work at all.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Hi
Can you search the DataProtectionManager-KB2751230.log from the bottom up for the string: InstallExecute. Return value 3.
The real cause of the failure will be right above that.
