DPMS and 2.6.37 kernel: backlight off forever

With the new kernel in the testing repo my Intel 945GM graphics chipset is affected by this kernel bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22672.
When the screen goes in standby, there is no way to rewaken the backlight.
I open this thread just in case a smart archlinux user comes out with a patch (which should be submitted ASAP in the kernel bugzilla, obviously ).

I do not know, it works for me, it patchs exactly the same file intel_ldvs.c successfully.
Try to redownload the patch directly from the kernel bugzilla, perhaps something went wrong in formatting.
In the meantime you can perhaps go with the other workaround in the comments, that is the following in /etc/rc.local:
/sbin/setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00
I guess you should adapt the value for the -s option to what is displayed for your graphics chipset in the outout of lspci.

  • "sleep 1; xset dpms force off" doesn't turn backlight off

I have a 13'' Macbook Pro connected to a 24'' Apple Cinema Display LED monitor and I'm running a XFCE as DE, and running the nvidia-beta + nvidia-utils-beta from AUR. I'm using the external monitor as the main screen and the MBP display turned off. I don't have a separate screensaver installed.
Until a couple of months ago issuing 'sleep 1; xset dpms force off' would  turn the backlight of the Apple Cinema Display off, which is how I like it. Now however the backlight switches off for a second, switches on again showing a blank (black with backlight on) screen. I experimented with the xset screensaver settings (xset s ...) but none enable me to turn the backlight off.

With the Apple Cinema Display disconnected and using only the laptop monitor 'sleep 1; xset dpms force off' does turn the backlight off. So it seems to be something about using the external monitor.

Thank you!  Nice to know I am not alone.  Googling has brought me nothing, though it's difficult to pinpoint discussions about something like this, as users may not know enough to work out what the problem is and not even mention DPMS!
Anyway, my setup consists of an i7 running on an X58A board with an ATi 5850 card using the radeon driver, from testing, not git.  System is fully up to date with testing enabled, X has little manual configuration besides telling it what driver to use.
I should mention that prior to this, I was using the fglrx driver, and had a similar but different problem.  With the fglrx driver, when using DPMS, after an undetermined time, could be minutes, could be hours, X would peg the CPU and become unresponsive, not even able to change to another VT.  Another issue difficult to google as a lot of users wouldn't know to ssh in to have a poke round.  I switched to radeon in an effort to get rid of this problem, only to have it replaced with another!
Neither times did anything out of the ordinary turn up in any logs.  Frustrated isn't the word!  For now I have turned off monitor power saving in KDE though this isn't ideal
EDIT:  Turning off monitor power saving in KDE didn't work, so I have no added
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "BlankTime" "0"
    Option "StandbyTime" "0"
    Option "SuspendTime" "0"
    Option "OffTime" "0"
    EndSection
    to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-xorg.conf
Of course, I'd like to be able to use DPMS!  Anyone have any ideas how this can be rectified?

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • Hiss with 5G when using SoundDock or similar ONLY when Backlight OFF

I've found this problem on two 30gig 5G iPods and I think it may be present on all.
    -If battery is full (completely)
    -If backlight is OFF
-iPod connected to a set of speakers via dock connecter AND the speakers control the volume, not the wheel on the iPod
Then, in quiet sections of music there is a noticable hiss from the speakers. This disappears as soon as the backlight goes on. Also not present if the iPod is charging (rather than charged already).
It happens on my Bose SoundDock and Belkin Auto Kit.
Also tried it on Kensington SX 2000 in an Apple Store - Same problem.
As a consequence the Apple store replaced my iPod. Now I've worked out about the battery, I think it is prenent on all 5G iPods, as it started on the replacement iPod as soon as it was fully charged.
    Thoughts.....
    AMD-PC   Windows XP Pro

    Hmmm, interesting thought Jon,
In my case it would be 50Hz Hum as I'm on the other side on the Atlantic.
Would you get such interference in a car though? I get the same problem with my Belkin Auto kit. This is basically a cig power adaptor with a small preamp in it. It connects to the dock connector and takes the line level audio, and preamps it and sends it to a 3.5mm jack that you connect your audio tape adaptor to. Same issue - hum/hiss with backlight OFF only when unit fully charged.
I've just taken to leaving my iPod not to turn off the screen, as I most use it powered.
Submitted the feedback as you suggested.

  • Urgent: MacBook Backlight Off

I seem to have pressed some kind of deadly key combination that has completely disabled my display's backlight. The screen is barely readable and none of the normal brightness buttons or sliders are having any effect.
Any ideas on how to get things back to normal?

I work for a small school. A teacher here bought a MacBook three days ago and has had three incidences of her backlight lamp appearing to die. When the book was opened and the power on, the screen was just barely visible and it looked the same way as the older iBooks I've seen with dead backlights. However, it seems to be a problem with the computer's "sleep on shut" setting. That is, when she goes to shut her MacBook after choosing "Shut Down" from the apple menu, she may be shutting it before the computer has entirely turned off, thus tripping the Sleep feature. When she goes to open the computer after this, the backlight doesn't come on even though the computer is still on, and so it looks like the backlight is dead.
I was actually able to temporarily fix this by navigating the dark screen to the apple menu, choosing "Shut Down", allowing the computer to power off, then powering it back on with the power button and with an external display connected to the MacBook's external display adapter. The backlight suddenly came back on, and the desktop was visible both on the MacBook and on the external display.
However, the problem has happened again since then, and short of hooking it up to an external display the only way to get it working again is to turn it off and on a couple times until it decides to start working again. Apparently this is happening even when she shuts it down correctly and lets the computer fully power off before shutting the case. It's frustrating, and definitely a problem apple should address if other people are experiencing it, as well.

  • Bad to leave backlight off?

I was just wondering.. I use my iBook alot with the vga adapter & a dell display.. when I have my iBook half closed while doing this, is it better to keep the backlight off or on.. or does it make no difference? I've been keeping it off while it's not in use and I just wanted to know if keeping it off for prolonged periods of time is bad for the iBook's display. Thanks alot

    Hi Patrick,
Are you talking about the "burn in" effect? That is most commonly known with the CRT displays. Leaving your screen on should only cause problems with causing the computer to over heat. I don't think that it will effect the screen.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

The backlight burned out from getting it wet. You will have to replace the screen at a 3rd party shop, buy a screen and replace it yourself, or make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and do an out-of-warranty replacement for $199 USD.

  • I dropped my iphone 4s in water and everything works but the backlight. I have heard rumors that I can take my damaged iPhone into an apple store and trade it in for a new phone and pay the difference. Is this true?

Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange at a discounted price off the full retail sales price.

  • Ipod Classic 80G Diagnostics SDRAM BackLight off : Fail

Run a diagnostics test and got the result BackLight Off ; Fail. Is this maybe the source of my apparent battery problems. Replaced battery but still running out in 3 hours.
What can I do about this result?

found the answer! - posted in 2010 from Bryan: hold the centre and menu buttons down at the same time for about 15 seconds. Had to do it about 3 times until the apple icon comes up and then its ok. Thank you.
Now to update my 'stuff'. I love this board! Thanks.

Hi, my name is Molly and my iPod has a backlight but it won't turn on, it's a fourth generation if that helps. I have looked in settings for anything about the backlight but there is nothing please help as I cannot find anything

Go to Settings>Brightness and make sure it is maxed out.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

My guess would also be a failling connection between your logicboard and your GPU. See 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
For most users it starts with some random crashes and freezes like you describe it. And then it just gets worse and worse. There are still no "good" solutions, sadly. This is a hardware problem from the production.
