DPS Potential buyer questions

Hi. I have a little experience with InDesign CS6 which I have used to create and publish epub books.   I now would like to create single edition apps. I already have an Apple Developer account. After looking at a number of different solutions Adobe DPS single edition looks most suitable but I am confused by the options so I have some questions.
1) Is Indesign and DPS all the software I need to create and output the app or is there something else that must be bought?
2) Does the price of Adobe DPS single edition mean I own it, ie it won't expire after a set period of time?
3) Adobe Creative Cloud gives a 1 year license to adobe software - does this license also include Adobe DPS single edition?
4) I don't need all the Adobe Creative Cloud software, if I just licensed Indesign CC, because it's cheaper, is Adobe DPS single edition still included.
5) Is it likely that support for Android and Amazon single editions will be added in the next year?
6) Can you point me to any resources on the internet that are good for teaching how to use DPS?
Thanks!

1. InDesign is the base, but any HTML knowledge will be a big help as will Edge Animate and Muse (both part of Creative Cloud)
2. It's an app, you create it and submit it to Apple. If approved it will stay on the app store as long as your Apple Developer account is active.
3. Creative Cloud includes an unlimted number of Single Edition apps. The first year is less than the cost of one SE license.
4. No. And you will quickly discover the rest of the CC apps are indeed quite a nice compliment to InDesign.
5. No. (my opinion only)
6. www.google.com and look around here as well.

  • Potential buyer – 8 questions I can't find answers for in the reviews

    Folks,
I’m seriously considering getting an iPhone in the next few days and after doing my homework I have a few questions I didn’t quite find the answers in the reviews I’ve read/watched. Could anyone comment on them? Some may sound silly
1- VNC – Has anyone used the version from NateTrue over EDGE? Is that usable? I basically want to use it to access a remote library reference app running on a PC (link: http://cre.ations.net/creation/webvnc---remote-desktop--vnc-on-your-iphone)
2 - PDF viewing – Can you view PDFs that are stored on websites or just attached to emails? Also, if the PDF has only the image of scanned text, can you still pan/zoom in?
3 - PDF #2 – Can you search within the PDF doc you’re viewing?
4 - Alarm - How loud is the sound of the alarm? Any former Treo users (650) who can compare the two?
5 - MP3s - If you tap on a link to an mp3 file in the browser, will it play?
6- Podcasts – Does Safari play podcasts using any of those web-based players you see in site wuch as twit, applephoneshow, etc?
7 - Contacts – I use the Palm Desktop + Treo and have my contacts in there. I don’t use outlook or other apps. Can I just export my contacts in .csv format and get them into the iPhone? Any suggestions? How about exporting/importing calendar events?

8 - Bonus question 3rd party apps – long shot, since the SDK is not out yet – Does anyone know about 3rd party apps DATA? I am really hoping that iSilo will release an iPhone version of its reader since I am a heavy user of a research library I use for my congregation activities (a modern translation of the Bible + lots of other publications) and I wonder how/if that’s going to work.
Many thanks in advance for your comments.
    Regards,
    Ismenio
PS: If anyone has traveled to Brazil with their iPhone (especially in the Northeast), could you comment on the experience? EDGE availability, call quality, etc? You can contact me direct on this one

I doubt that it will work very well.
*2 - PDF viewing – Can you view PDFs that are stored on websites or just attached to emails? Also, if the PDF has only the image of scanned text, can you still pan/zoom in?*
    I don't see why not
*3 - PDF #2 – Can you search within the PDF doc you’re viewing?*
No. The iPhone does not offer search
*- MP3s - If you tap on a link to an mp3 file in the browser, will it play?*
    No
*6- Podcasts – Does Safari play podcasts using any of those web-based players you see in site wuch as twit, applephoneshow, etc?*
No, all of these would rely on quicktime, which doesn't really work. The iPhone doesn't support streaming audio very well.
*7 - Contacts – I use the Palm Desktop + Treo and have my contacts in there. I don’t use outlook or other apps. Can I just export my contacts in .csv format and get them into the iPhone? Any suggestions? How about exporting/importing calendar events?*
    No you cannot

Sorry, we cannot answer any questions about the SDK because no details have been made public as of yet.

  • Another potential UK buyer question.

I will be buying an iPhone on Friday, I do have one question though and have not been able to find an answer to it on t'internet. I charge my current iPod in a Bose Sound-dock, will the IPhone play through and charge in it?
    Thanks
    Jamie.

From firsthand experience I can say the iPhone does work with the sounddock.. however you will get quite a bit of interference depending on the strength of the signal and where the unit is placed. Certain models of the sounddock will also fail to charge the iphone. (so it will only play).
You will be forced with a "this addon is not designed for the iphone" everytime you place it in the cradle.. =)

  • Forms system potential migration questions.

We have a forms and reports based system built in 10g.
We are considering migrating to 11g forms and reports but long term moving to ADF or APEX.
We are generally a data entry system run on intranet so my prefernence has always been APEX but management are trying to follow the Oracle roadmap which is pushing ADF.
We are a small outfit so the solution we choose will probably be the one which offers the quickest development times.
I have signed up for apex.oracle.com to have a play but seems to be taking forever to get approval!
A few questions re APEX (apologies if these are really simple)
    1) How is user access controlled. Currently all our users login via one SYSDBA user. Our current system has a logon box which then allows access to the screens they can amend. I assume APEX uses the DB user access rights?
    2) How easy is it to deploy fixes etc? We have upwards of 200 customer sites. We currently distribute fmx an RDF files on a monthly basis.
    3) Can you use key strokes? Many customers like the F Keys to be used as quick keys? i.e. in forms F10 can be save, F3 can be clear etc
    4) Can we use our existing database? Although this is many years old and all the correct constraints may not be in place (ie. a few FK/indexes may be missing - but we could try and tidy up pre migration) would it be possible to use this. We are consdiering rewriting the database but most customers will want to bring through their old data and have custom reports built on these so would struggle to rewrite)
    5) How is inheritance handled? In our forms environment all our items are inherited from one point so if we change that one point it follows through the system
    6) I have seen online demo were by people are creating mini databases from spreadsheets. Can it be setup so the users can create things like this without affecting other areas of the system?
    7) Any pros/Cons when comparing to ADF
    8) Any people any fedback from migrating from Forms
Any feedback at all is greatfully recieved.
Im looking forward to the online demo.

Sure Oracle pushes ADF, because it has cost them $$$$$$ and they want to get that back. Apex is part of the database, and as such you already have a license for it. No need for a Weblogic or OAS license.
seems to be taking forever to get approval!Went pretty fast for me a few years ago. 1-2 days if I remember correctly.
    1) There are pre-built authentication methods, but you can also create your own method (which most people do).
I assume APEX uses the DB user access rights? As in most web applications, there is only one user that actually accesses the database. And I would never ever make that a SYSDBA user!
Other users may log in via username/password that can be stored in Apex tables or your own tables. They can also be actual database users. However, since they do not connect to the database, their roles are irrelevant. You may use these roles to check authorization in your application, though.
    2) Apex exports applications in a sql file, so you can deploy applications via sqlplus (or via the Apex administrator page).
    3) The keys are actually browser keys, so you are very limited. You can use some Javascript, but forget about something like F7-F8 combination. It doesn't matter what technology you use, web is different from client/server (or the Forms Java applet). You have to rethink GUI concepts coming from Forms and going to browser applications.
    4) Yes. But like Forms, good database design makes thinks easier (like using wizards).
    5) There are all kinds of places where you can set defaults, templates etc.
    6) Yes.
    7) Google for discussions on ADF vs Apex.
    8) We use it side by side. No plans to recreate Forms as an Apex application.
Depending on the size of your Forms app, it may take a long time to re-create it in Apex. There are some Forms migration tools in Apex, but I wouldn't use those. They cannot migrate the Forms code anyway, since a browser doesn't understand pl/sql code. As said, you really have to rethink your GUI when moving to a web app.

  • Potentially stupid question

I work in a photography studio and I am relatively unfamiliar with InDesign, having just gotten the program myself.
One of our clients is having a problem with our Photoshop files when they import them into InDesign.  We gave them a disk of images (jpegs and tifs).  These images having clipping paths around them (in addition to being dropped onto a white background).  There seems to be no problems with tifs.  If they attempt to use a jpeg, it will only appear to import as the path itself (just an outline).
I found people saying that clipping paths don't work with jpegs (but all this info was extremely dated) but other than that, I couldn't find anything remotely indicating the problem.  After a little bit of searching, I advised them to turn off the PS path when working with the image and that did appear to work.
They are, unfortunately, displeased with this answer (they think it will take too much time with so many images) and I was wondering if there were any other solutions to the problem.  They've got the disk, so there isn't a whole lot we can do on our end to fix the problem... and I'm not even entirely sure what caused the problem to begin with.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure I understand the question, but here goes:
By default, ID honors a clipping path (I think that's what you mean is happening) when it opens an image that contains one. This can be changed after the fact from the Object > Clipping Path > Options... dialog, or before the file is placed by showing the import options and unchecking the the box that says to use the path.
If you uncheck that box on one image, the setting should stick, at least for the current session, and there should be no need to show options again just to turn off the path. I usually use the shortcut of leaving the "Show Import Options" box UNCHECHED in the place dialog and hold down the Shift key while clicking OK to show the import options only when I need them.

  • DPS AND INDESIGN QUESTION

I am designing with Indesign CS6 AND WITH FOLIO TO BE VIEWED ON IPAD WITH ADOBE CONTENT VIEWER, WHEN DO I need digital publishing in this. Do i need to buy DPS seprately

ACV is Adobe Content Viewer. You can use it to preview folios you created with InDesign, and you can share that folio with other people. But if you want to create a custom app, you need to pay. For example, with a full subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, you can create an unlimited number of Single Edition apps. Single Edition apps include only one folio and they work only on the iPad. To create other types of apps that work on various platforms, you need either a DPS Pro or Enterprise subscription.

  • DPS Customer Service question

Is there a specific number I can call for some DPS Customer Service issues? I tried calling a possible number yesterday. An automated system said it would be over an hour wait and gave the option to leave a call back number. I did. An hour later the phone rang and put me on hold. I heard someone pick up @4 times and quickly return me to hold until after 20 minutes the call disconnected. I do not want Tech Support, I specifically want Customer Service for DPS.

Currently customer service for DPS is not in place yet. So, even if you dial Adobe customer service, they won't have an idea about DPS. You are eligible for the Gold support if you have a DPS contract(SE, Pro or Enterprise). Else you can always use this forum which is really helpful and they can further guide you to tutorials and documentation. Lots of helpful people and experts managing the forum!

  • DPS backend configuration question

In DPS 5.2, the storage of the rules were put in the configuration instance of the directory server you installed with DPS. We were able to then have multiple DPS servers read that same configuration from that same instance so we could do configuration in one place. Now going to 6.3, where are the rules stored? They don't appear to be in the ads instance. Is everything only in the conf.ldif? Does that mean if I have 4 DPS servers and want to make a configuration change, that I need to make it in 4 places? Or do I make the change in 1 and then use the GUI to copy the configuration to the others? Thanks in advance.

DPS 6.x and 7.x no longer use a LDAP directory to store the configuration.
DPS instance config is made of
    - conf.ldif
    - the keystores in <instance_path>/alias containing ssl certs + encryption key used to encrypt sensitive data in conf.ldif
    - optionally pass.txt file in <instance_path>/etc containing offuscated password to protect keystores.
It is therefore possible to "clone" instances by copying these 3 file sets all together.
However, the recomended and supported procedure is to use the copy_config feature provided by the GUI.
    Hope this helps

  • IPhone 6 DPS folio resolution question

    Hi,
We have an existing iPad DPS app (multi folio with subs).
I am in the process of remaking it, to include iPhone.
I set the iPad folios up at 1024 and for the HD version it looks ok. I tend to make the rasterised assets at 50% so they look ok up.
What resolution should I use for the iPhone? As I understand it, I'll need to make renditions – two, to account for the different aspect ratios (3:2 and 16:9). Unlike the iPad, am I better artworking to the iPhone 6 plus size and coming down (Alt layouts), or could I artwork to the 5 and use a similar method to ensure clarity to 6 and 6+? Will it pick up the 5s res on the 6 and 6+?
    Thanks,
    Matt

The iPhone viewer does not have support yet for an iPhone 6/6+ rendition. You should design for the iPhone 5, every indication we've had is that iPhone 5 content looks perfectly fine on iPhone 6 with no changes.

  • New buyer question: can I sync my new iPod Touch in the Apple Store?

I'm heading to Florida in 5 days (I live in the UK), where I'll be buying my iPod Touch (well, I'll hang off as long as possible to try and catch a price-drop or upgrade after 11 July).
However, it's looking unlikely that I'll have my laptop with me, so I won't be able to sync up to my iTunes library until I get back home to the UK.
Do you think the staff in the Apple Store would sync and register it for me, so that I can at least use the wi-fi etc. until I get home? I don't want any music or videos on it until I get home, so I don't need anything like that.

    You could ask.
They may let you plug it to register it so you can use it.
I doubt they would let you sync it since that would put the music from the computer you are connecting it to.

  • Potentially Quick Question That May Make Me Look Silly

In the timeline, what does it mean when there's a large gray plus sign inside a gray square on a video clip?
We're trying to export the film as a Quicktime (DVCProHD 1080i60) and everytime it keeps telling me there's "no movie in file" as an error before it even gets to 1%. I've checked the timeline for missing media and unrendered clips and found nothing. The only variable left is that a few clips have these plus signs in the little gray squares in place of the thumbnail images that the other clips have on them.

I looked it up in finder as suggested, and the source clip that 82A-2 uses is there, it's listed as a "Final Cut Pro Movie" and it's 1.8gb. However, when I try to open it in Quicktime, it says "This is not a movie file."
Checked the other "plussed" clips in the timeline, same deal. Same propertires, all around 1gb or slightly bigger, and none of them open in Quicktime. What gives?
It's strange because the entire film will play perfectly from the timeline. But I can't export it at all. Attempting to reconnect the media does no good, either, since the original clips seem to not be movie files anymore, for some reason. Any idea what's happened here? And why it would happen to only some of the clips and not others?
In the source folder that the original clips are in, some of them won't open, giving that "not a movie file" message and won't even offer a preview image in Finder. But other clips are fine. Same with the Final Cut project. Most of the clips in the timeline are fine, but the ones with these "plus" signs on them, when I look up the source clip by doing "reveal in finder," they all are like the above example.

  • New Mac Buyer Question

Hi, I'm about to make my first Mac purchase and would greatly appreciate knowing how well the Mini displays on a Sharp Aquos 20" LCD TV. Thanks, Dorothy

Thanks, all, for your swell suggestions!
My 20" Aquos only has a VGA input and will probably not provide an optimally crisp display for the Mini, so I'm going to check out the iMac at our Apple store.
Thanks again, peeps! Now back to lurking and learning!

  • Streaming MPG's in Safari...potential dumb question alert !

    Hi,
I've noticed recently that whenever I try and stream an MPG video clip in Safari, it doesn't stream anymore but automatically downloads to my HD.
As I remember, this never used to be the case, all MPG's I viewed streamed OK.
Have I changed some setting somewhere by accident, I'm not aware of doing this but I guess it's possible ?
I haven't downloaded any new updates recently and I regularly run all the normal hosekeeping routines.
    I'm running OS 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3.2 (v312.6).
Any suggestions would be appreciated - apologises if it's obvious and I've missed it !
    Nick

QuickTime System Preference pane / Advanced tab
Click the button for MIME Settings
Place a check mark next to MPEG Video and quit and relaunch Safari.
From this point on the QuickTime browser plug-in will download the MPEG-1 file in a new browser window instead of downloading to your default save location.
    MPEG-1 files do not stream.

  • A potentially stupid question.

I had a strange experience while on my G5 running leopard. I was sitting there and all the sudden the menu bar widgets, like iStat and the clock and all those started flickering, like they do when I log in, but repeatedly. I then noticed the internet was sort of quickly connecting and disconnecting, the computer just starting behaving strangely. I was wondering if there is any way that someone could have sent something in an email, or used some kind of website-based code to try and hack into my computer and caused this. I'm only concerned because there is someone who I think may be trying to do things like this, but have no clue if thats what it is, or how I could prove it, and then stop it.

You can also use some freely available utility tools such as OnyX to more
manually control the incidence of when the maintenance scripts run, in it.
My main computer stays on (but is allowed or put to sleep) for up to several
months at a time; so due to the sleep intervals, the built-in scripts never run.
As a precautionary, my computer's power from the mains is somewhat protected
from extremes of high or low power through the use of a backup UPS unit that
has automatic voltage regulation technologies; it cuts in to alternatively power the
computer from its built-in battery and can shunt excesses to ground. Also, this will
allow me to control the uninterrupted backup power supply via the Energy system
preference panel in OS X. There is a special data cable included with the UPS.
The method suggested, to start the computer with Shift key held, engages the
SafeBoot mode and that will attempt to force-repair some system files on start.
    A secondary repair of other items can then be easily done while the Mac is on;
and to escape the SafeBoot mode, a restart is necessary. Outside of this, the
booted OS X install disc has its own Disk Utility accessed from the Intstaller's
menu bar, available ahead of any indications of running that dreaded installer.
(Some have run the installer, thinking to fix a minor issue; when the Disk Utility
in that installer can do more than repair disk, etc; as the hard drive is unmounted
and open to more invasive treatments, including other options in those disk tools.)
There is a free open source item for looking into virus activity; ClamXAV. I have
downloaded it, but never ran it. Some have found it can find evidence of those
kinds of items one may accidentally install themselves. Not sure if that's so.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • A potential dumb question

OK, this is driving me crazy. I use an AIM account with iChat. I want to add a buddy that uses a .mac or .me account. When I click on the + to add a buddy, it only gives me the option of adding an AIM user name, not .me or .mac. If I go to "Buddies" in the menu bar, everything is greyed out. I have buddies on my list that are .me and .mac....Am I missing something???

    Hi,
    For the points
In some ways it is simpler but it is a surprise that this bit was changed.
It's one of those things you can end up staring at and not realise what it is telling you about the process.
