DR-8 isn't doing much!

I built my computer about two months ago complete with two 'nice' msi optical drives. The D16 handles all the straight reading tasks and seems to be working ok. The DR8-A is supposed to do all the burning...but it doesn't. I really need to do some file backup soon, the drive has been sitting about expensively doing nothing.
First of all the specs:
AMD Athlon Barton XP3200+
1024mb Corsair 3200DDR SDRAM
Gigabyte GA-7NNXP mainboard rev 1.0, bios F16
200Gb Maxtor DiamondPlus 9 IDE HDD
Sapphire Radeon 9800XT
Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS

Coolmaster Jet-7 Fan
Enermax 460w PSU
Win XP Pro sp1 + plus latest updates
Basically Nero (the version that came with the drive) won't burn anything nor will Window's in built writer program. When it tries to select the media in the drive it just ejects the disc claiming that there is nothing in the drive.
My mate thought the problem came down to duff nvidia IDE (since the mainboard is an nvidia chipset) drivers so I switched to the standard windows ones but that did nothing. In my computer the DR-8's icon is just a plain cd drive...nothing indicates that it's a dvd drive or even a writer. I've updated to the latest firmware on both drives but nothing happened.
My other mate reckons it's not working because the drive is positioned as the slave on my second ide channel (the D16 is the master). Would sticking the DR-8 on the primary IDE channel as a slave to the hard-drive (this is beginning to sound dirty) help at all?
Any good suggestions forumites?

I'm suffering the same problem, though the damn thing worked fine for one day on my new build, SYS is a KT8 Neo FSR, 1 Gb Corsair Mem, SATA Maxtor HD, and an ATI 9600XT. The drive shows up as a DVD -R ok, it'll read CD's Just fine, but won't see a DVD of any kind, Movie, data, R / RW blanks or written. Nuthin seems to make a difference. I had it Master Primary, secondary Primary & slave, the only thing I was wondering, does any one know if " Location 0 (0)" which it shows in Device properties would make a difference if the SATA HD shows " Location Bus Number 0, Target ID 0 , LUN 0" ? or is the damned DVD Laser just Dead?

Sure - it's not really meant to be a full-fledged dictation software solution. If that's what you're looking for you can purchase the just released (I think) Dragon Dicate 4 for Mac. At $200 it's not cheap but I've used it on Windows-based machines and it does, as advertised, deliver 99% accuracy.
It's also very important to have a good USB mic/headphone set. The one that comes with Dragon will do but I prefer the Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000 headset.

My MacBook Pro gets hot when I'm not doing much and when I watch YouTube videos the video skips, scrolling doe as well.

I bought the new, and my first MacBook Pro 13" a little over a month ago for college and love it, but have started to realize a couple problems I can't seem to solve. The bottom of the MacBook becomes very very hot in a short amount of time, and I really don't think I'm doing much to cause it. Another issue is while I watch a Youtube video in HD, even if it's completely loaded, it skips every so often and is slow and also makes my computer very hot. When I try to scroll up and down to view a web site, it also sometimes skips. I really never thought this would happen to Apple computers and hope someone can help me fix these problems! So I've got illustrator CC and I'm trying to map a pattern of a golf ball on to a sphere but it isn't doing what I'd like - it's distorting my circles the wrong way. I found a blog post about using a custom plugin, but the plugin looks like it's outdated. Wondering if there is a way to get the desired effect in CC that I'm missing? The typical fix if the progress bar totally freezes - meaning no movement at all for more than 20 minutes - and iTunes will no recognize the device - is to try to put the iPad into recovery mode. That is explained here.

However, don't jump the gun. Keep an eye on the progress bar and if it is moving at all - even very slowly - let it go for a while. I'm updating my iPod touch first and the progress bar is moving but very slowly.

Screen is white and isn't doing anything

My computer froze so did a force shut down. The computer turned back on but the screen is just staying white and isn't doing anything. It has been doing this for over an hour now. I tried turning it off again and it won't even turn off!!! PLEASE HELP I have a ton of homework to get done!

Source Formatting isn't doing what I expect

I either don't understand how it works, or it isn't working
as it should.
When I apply Source Formatting to badly formatted code, I was
expecting it
to format the td tags like this:

In the tag library editor it says:
Line Breaks: Before, Inside, After
Contents: Formatted and Indented
Case: Lower Case
After applying source formatting all my td tags get formatted
like this:

Or if there are many lines of code between the td's they get

tag contents2

What am I doing wrong?

OK, I see that setting. I wondered why it wouldn't behave. I
guess it was
doing what it is supposed to do.
I guess I have seen odd behavior sometimes in IE rendering
complex table
based layouts and have had to go in and remove that space
because it
rendered the space in the source code the same way it would
have rendered a
<br>.
I guess it is better to leave the setting to "No Break" but
dang, that sure
makes the source code look ugly. I like structured nested
code, it makes it
so much easier to troubleshoot.
Now I don't know what to do.
A friend of mine used to code crazily commented, extremely
structured html
code. (former VAX programmer) He had a program that would
strip out every
extra space, and all the comments before he uploaded it. He
kept two
versions, almost like a programmer keeps source code and
delivered code.
That would be a solution around my problem, but I am too lazy
to maintain
source and delivered code.

GTX 780 Ti - CUDA selected, but GPU isn't doing anything

I know there's a bunch of posts on the 780 Ti, but I've been researching for days and I'm getting nowhere.
Disclaimer: First let me just quickly say this. I know it's not officially supported and I understand why, so please don't mention that. I'm a long time PC enthusiast and builder and I've worked in technical IT positions for 15 years. I understand liability implications of testing hardware and officially supporting something, and also the implications of using unsupported configurations (like PP maybe randomly crashing, etc). Now, with that said:
The Issue: In PP CC 2014, CUDA is available and it is selected. In fact I never had to select it. It has always been automatically selected when creating new projects. However, my cards aren't doing anything. They're idle 100% of the time.
I've read posts from users and from Adobe stating that unsupported CUDA capable cards will still work as long as the user accepts a message stating that the card isn't supported. However, I don't ever recall getting a message saying anything about my cards being unsupported. I only know about said message because it's been mentioned by Adobe and other users. I'll admit that I may have, in fact, been prompted and clicked accept, or continue, or whatever, but I'm pretty sure I would remember that. I also wouldn't have been surprised to see the 780 Ti missing from the supported cards list, which I only went looking for after learning that it wasn't using my cards.
I've messed with PP settings, NVIDIA settings, uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, older drivers, beta drivers, uninstall/reinstall PP CC 2014. I read something about deleting the CUDA file so I tried that but I think that's not supposed to be necessary anymore(?)... I'm losing my mind here.
1. I've read that exporting media "only uses the CPU and not the GPU" and I've also read "CUDA GPU acceleration will significantly reduce export times". What's the official answer on this?
2. During sped up playback and reverse playback (normal playback is fine), the CPU is pegged and the GPUs are idle. Shouldn't at least this use the GPUs?
3. I've read that not all effects will or can use CUDA. For example when applying the warp stabilizer to clips, the CPU is pegged and the GPUs are idle. Does that not use CUDA? That seems like a pretty common effect that should be able to use GPUs.
I would really appreciate an official answer as to whether the 780 Ti will work or not - completely ignoring whether it's officially supported. If the answer is "yes, it will (should) work, but something is wrong with your particular setup/configuration" I'm ok with that, but I'm hoping there's a suggestion I haven't found yet, that might help get my cards working.

using any crazy export settings, just defaults with 2-pass selected instead
of 1-pass for example.

I'm not the type to purchase electronics merely to keep up with the times. I tend to put my devices through quite a bit of use. That being said, the 2GB limit on data just isn't enough. The only reason that I don't use 2GB on my iphone only because I have wi-fi at home and the screen on the iPhone (albeit OUTSTANDING for a phone) is still small enough to keep me from surfing the internet ALL the time. With a device like the iPad, where the the screen is large enough to not be a deterent, I'd want to use it extensively. The 2GB limit would pretty much cross EXTENSIVELY off of my list of choices. Maybe this is just a rant.........I guess it ticks me off to not buy a seemingly great product because it's tied to a not-so-great service provider..............but not for long!!!!!!

Mail Just Isn't Doing What it Should

I've been having problems with Mail for the past few months, and I've become so fed up I needed to post here to see if anyone has any suggestions on how to make things better.
My original problem was that mail would keep downloading messages I had deleted from the server, especially spam messages, such that I would have to delete the same spam message 6-7 times per day to keep my mailbox free of spam. My trash folder would like rather ridiculous with many duplicate copies of the same message. I would've thought that mail would download a message from the server only once, and especially if I had deleted it it wouldn't download it again. Anyways, it didn't do this and I was quite disappointed.
This was all while I was trying to "train" the mail program to recognize the spam from real messages, and even though some real messages were still getting tagged as spam, I needed to take it out of training so I wouldn't have the issue of deleting spam so often. So, I recently took the mail program out of training mode and set it to move spam to the junk folder (because of my real messages still being tagged as spam). As soon as I did this the scads of spam suddenly became no longer the yellow spam color that I've known to despise, but instead look black like regular messages. Because of this they are not moved into the junk folder. However when I click on them mail still thinks they are junk because I get the button to click to say that it is (Not Junk)
Now as of this morning, Mail seems to have forgotten all of its training and is no longer setting /anything/ to junk. I am just so frustrated with this program. Usually Apple's programs are so amazing. Am I doing something terribly wrong?

Welcome to the Discussions. I am sorry you have waited so long to post about these issues.
For the problem of repeated downloads, this is likely the result of some corruption in the files named MesssageUidsAlreadyDownded (there can be two), which is found in every POP account folder, along with many other files, including those storing Rules info, and Junk Rules info. This corruption can sometimes, but not often, result from strangely formated HTML messages, and problem does not happen with every mail server.
First question that might relate to the other problem you mention is how much free disk space is on your hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?
Second question is, was the Mail folder converted from one used by Panther's Mail program? If so, Are you using a POP account? If so, I want you to read the article at the link below, and then get back to me with some observations:

This issue of leftover files applies not only to mailbox you have previously created (which are in the Mailboxes folder the article mentioned) but can also apply to those mailboxes in account folders created prior to the upgrade to Tiger.
Also, some issues could arise from a truly Overstuffed mailbox, so when you report to me the names of files seen in your INBOX.mbox folder of your principal account (if more than one), also report the size of each file or folder. Do not, however, try to list the files that are within the folder named Messages, that is found in each and every mailbox. I doubt this is applicable.
The path to the Mail folder is Home/Library/Mail -- within the Mail folder are one or more account folders and the Mailboxes folder.

Spamassassin isn't doing it's job properly

I have a strange feeling...wait, I'm sure, that Spamassassin isn't working as it should be. The fact is I receive tons of spam e-mails, mostly from one or two sources recently, and every single time I'm marking those as spam in my KMail. It doesn't help, those e-mails are still reaching my inbox. I didn't have such problems in the past. Does the fact that I'm using IMAP to view my e-mails on GMail have something to do with that? The other account is set to use POP3, and I don't see any differences. Anyone can confirm that something is not working with spamassassin?
My specs:

KDEmod 4.4.3
KMail 1.13.3

Why is FF 5 using a third to one half of CPU time, but isn't doing anything?

I am running FF5 on a WinXP system. With only two tabs open on websites that are static, FF is using between 27 and 33% of CPU time. Why is this happening?

Slow. not capable of doing much

I bought this laptop to replace another HP I had that was beginning to have video hardware issues.
I should have just paid to repair that one!
This is a low end machine, but I expected it to work about as well, if not better, but I was fooled. This laptop is so slow and cumbersome that it resembles a paper weight.
It can't update web pages as I scroll through them. It is not my wifi because my iPhone, MacBook and old HP did just fine. I asked the store if a memory upgrade would help and they laughed and told me that it is not a performance laptop.
Not asking for much. Just check email and see my facebook feed.
As far as I am concerned, HP has lost a loyal customer. If this is the junk they are selling, I will just take my business to a company that builds decent computers.
Any advice or suggestions on what can be done to restore my faith in HP to make this computer a little quicker?

The iMQ 2.0 restart command isn't doing what I want.

I have installed the imq 2.0 on solaris 8 on a single host. jmq broker
is installed by following the admin guide. When I tried to use jmqcmd
shutdown bkr. It is shutdown without any problem. Then I use
jmqcmd restart bkr to restart the jmqcmd It comes up with the
following error:
Error while connecting to the broker.
[C4003]: Error occurred on connection creation. - caught
javax.jms.JMSException
Please verify that there is a broker running on the specified host and
port or use the '-b' option to specify the correct broker host and port.
Restarting the broker failed.
Eventhough I tried on different port no on the same localhost by
typing "jmqcmd restart bkr -b localhost:1111", it is still the same
problem.
When I tried to run jmqadmin, and connect to the specified broker, it
prompts with an error box as below:
Error encountered while connecting to the broker: "MyBroker":
Broker Host: 'localhost'
Primary Port: '7676'
[C4003]: Error occurred on connection creation, - caught
javax.jms.JMSException
Please verify that there is a broker running on the specified host and
port.
It seems that the port 7676 is still engaged by the broker for some
reasons. ie. the shutdown does not free up the port.
Would somebody have any idea on what went wrong?

The 'restart' option in both jmqcmd and jmqadmin is to
first shutdown and then restart a running broker.
It is not for starting a broker that has already been shutdown.
See p.130 of the admin guide.

Time Capsule isn't doing right

I have backed up hundreds of GBs since I bought it last march. My average daily back ups is around at least 500mb per day because of updated digital photos. Out of blue, from the time machine window back up meter says shy over 200 GB. It is definitely something wrong with the system. Is there any way for me to solve the problem. It still shows at least 200 gb after I click cancel button many of times. Does my time capsule needs to be reset or what else? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

*_Incremental Backups Seem Too Large!_*
Consider the following, it might give you some ideas:
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
One poster observed regarding Photoshop: “If you find yourself working with large files, you may discover that TM is suddenly backing up your scratch disk's temp files. This is useless, find out how to exclude these (I'm not actually sure here). Alternatively, turn off TM whilst you work in Photoshop.” (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1209412)
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
If you have recently created a new disk image or burned a DVD, Time Machine will target these files for backup unless they are deleted or excluded from backup.
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can created major changes in the structure of your directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer describes this behavior: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. This disk utility feature creates backup copies of your system directories. Obviously these directories are changing all the time. So, depending on how it is configured, these backup files will be changing as well which is interpreted by Time Machine as new data to backup. Excluding the folder these backups are stored in will eliminate this effect.
*Backups WAY Too Large*
If an initial full backup or subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude itself by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Prefs “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder if you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.
