DR8-A cannot read audio CDs

Hi,
After using my DR8-A for a bit over 2 years without any major problem, i just found a peculiar behavior.
My drive can *perfectly* burn any type (data CD, audio CD, DVD both data or video) of media and even normally read any type of media (DVD, both data or video, data CD...), but it does NOT recognize any audio CD.
Stranger, it does not even recognize the audio CDs it burns itself
Any audio CD inserted in the drive would spin up, seek and spin down after a while, but not be recognized.
I search the forum about occurences of such problems and found many where the DVD stop recognizing some type of media, but just audio seems new. No solution was ever provided, except RMA (not really an option on a 2+ year old drive).
Anyway, not really a matter of life or death (i still have a plextor CDR to burn audio), but more of a curiosity.

nope, once the disk is ejected, it is not recognized anymore. The Audio CDs burnt this way work great in any CD player (i have not tested them in the plextor for errors).
The funny part is that i did not change any configuration lately, but it still ceased to work.
I'm using a modified 1.5D firmware (and had been for a while). I may try to flash it to a 1.6D, but i'm not sure if i have a  DR8A or a DR8A2 (which takes the 1.6D).
I may run more tests on the drive, but i'm not really worried. It served its 2 years and still act for the function i need (ie: burn DVD). I have a DVD DL on order anyway
Edit: Well, it seems that a few cold boot have fixed this problem. Weird... It did not last week end, when it manifested itself, but a power outtage took care of it. By the way, i tested the burnt audio CD in nero CD speed and the CD is perfect. No error. EAC is 10 with reliable stream. No idea where it came from or why it left, but good riddance...

  • My 24" iMac won't read audio cds--ejects them after about 15 seconds

My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.

I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
    Trash the following folders:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
    extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
    CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
    Restart
    Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years, but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes.

  • 10.5.7 Won't Read Audio CDs?

I installed 10.5.7 a couple of days ago. All went well and continues to do so except for 1 minor quirk, none of my audio CDs can be read by the dvd drive, I have managed to burn both CD and DVDs though using toast 8, but I'm unable to read audio CDs new AND old. Anyone one else having trouble with Audio CDs? [DVDs are fine]
    Macbook 10.5.7, 4 gig ram 160gig hd

First, my MBP plays CDs fine, so it's not 10.5.7, at least in my case.
What happens when you insert an audio CD? Does it appear at all on the desktop?
    Try a PRAM reset.
AFAIK, the lasers for reading CDs and DVDs are different. CDs use a 700nm laser, DVDs a 640nm.
The lasers for burning are different again.
It's just possible that the CD laser in your drive is not working.
Other than a PRAM reset, I am not sure what you can do.

  • Toshiba SD-R2212 drive read audio CDs only

    Hi,
I have a problem with my combo drive Toshiba sd-r2212.
The problem is: my drive only reads audio CDs, not CD-ROMs or DVDs
    My firmware version is: 1314.
Anyone could help me with this problem? I didn't find any solution at Google.

    Hello
I believe it is an older ODD. Am I right?
Anyway, it is not easy to say what is wrong with this optical disk drive. If I say my car doesnt start why? what you can say? Probably not much without any precise checkup!
I dont know how old is your ODD but there is also possibility that the drive is defective. Usually at first the drive can not read DVDs but CDs. That is typical symptom for defective ODD. The laser calibration doesnt works as before.
Sorry but according to your short posting I can just say: the drive is probably defective and there is no much to do. Replacement is necessary.

  • Macbook pro will only read audio cds

My MacBook Pro2,1 17" will no longer read anything other than Audio CDs in its drive. Any other format and it says the CD is empty. It never used to do this. I wonder if upgrading to Mac OS 10.7 (Lion - which is as far as this hardware will go) will fix this problem, or has the firmware gone awry? (What a great pity they don't make 17" laptops anymore.)

This is not related to my CD problems, for which you have been very helpful, but you may be interested as you seem to be au fait with the older MacBook Pros.
Some time ago, I purchased a new power supply for my Mac which came with a MAGSAFE 1 L-Tip magnetic adapter. The original had been a MAGSAFE 1 T-Tip but it had worn out and the coaxial screen was looking very exposed. All went well until, inevitably, the laptop was dropped. The L-Tip stayed in place and because of its sausage shape, dented the side of the casing. It [the L-Tip] would no longer make contact (because of its long body) so I reverted, very gingerly [an English expression?] to the original T-Tip which still worked. I then ordered what I thought was a new T-Tip supply but when it arrived, turns out there is now a MAGSAFE 2 T-Tip (which of course would not work). Maybe they have abandoned the L-Tip because it is self destructive. I have now finally returned the MAGSAFE 2 and await a MAGSAFE 1 T-Tip. A cautionary tale for those looking for a new power supply.

  • Cannot play audio CDs in totem

I have totem-gstreamer and the gstreamer plugins for cdaudio, cdio and cdparanoia.
I am in the audio and optical group.
    The permissions of my cd-rom are as follows: brw-r----- 1 root audio 22, 0 2007-08-06 22:35 /dev/hdc
The audio CD appears as an icon on my desktop when I insert it.
No other audio application is running.
I can play audio cds using the cdplay program cdkit provides.
But, when I start totem the option Play Disc 'Audio CD' is greyed out.
I've tried turning HAL off and restarting totem to no avail.
I've tried totem-xine and still it does not work.
The only thing that does give some food for thought is that when I kill gnome-vfs-daemon the option "Play Disc "Audio CD"" disappears...
    Help!

    Hello arbee,
It seems certain that the problem lies with your CD player. It is well-known that many older CD players will not read CD-R discs. If you look at this two-year old discussion you'll see what the issues are for someone who had a similar experience to yourself.
This discussion also suggests that you might get better results from using a higher-grade burning programme, such as Toast -- but nothing's certain.
    Best wishes,
    Martin

It does not appear in iTunes, or anywhere on the desktop.
It will read and burn blank cds and dvds.
    I havde a 17" MacBook Pro, 2009, with a MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-868 drive.
Anyone have any ideas how to get it to work again or what the problem could be?

yes it could but probably not after testing ten different CDs right? Got the very same scenarion and asked the question again here, pls see https://discussions.apple.com/message/22423010#22423010

John: Since your drive mechanism is plainly working OK, your problem is probably software-related. But to begin at the beginning, see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
There are many links in that article to other articles. Resist the impulse to jump at any of them until you've worked your way through the whole article. My guess is that you'll end up following the link for software troubleshooting, but don't take my word for it: see whether the steps in the first article really lead you there.
If you can't get anywhere that way, try posting in the OS X 10.3 and earlier Usage forum, being sure to provide any additional details, including what you've tried to do in the way of troubleshooting. (There's no point in people suggesting things you've already tried, so don't waste their time or yours.) Good luck!

  • After update, cannot play audio cds (via kscd or dragon player)

    Hello!
    Subject says it all.
I just did a pacman -Syu   on my system.  Afterwards, I am now unable to play audio cds.... nothing happens.
I insert a known-working cd in drive, and I don't get any sort of device insertion notification from kde. Fine, no big deal.  But when I open kscd, and hit the play button... nothing happens.  Same with dragon.  What happened? And how to fix?
    Many thanks!

  • Cannot burn Audio CDs (only Data CDs) since upgrade to Itunes 7

I'm having a problem and it is very frustrating. Worked fine with Ver. 6 but you had to download to ver. 7 before you could purchase any new music so I did. Big mistake! My problem is burning CDs. I can only burn "Data CDs." I went to "Edit" and then to "preferences" then to "Advanced" and then to "Burning" -At that point you have a choice to choose Audio CD burning or Data CD burning. I will not stay on Audio CD burning - keeps defaulting to Data CD burning and there is no "save" button or anything to stop it from happening. When it burns from the data cd it the cd will only play in my computer - not in my car or other player. Would you know how to correct this???? to stop the default? My ipod is fine. I hope Apple takes care of this soon.

  • Cannot create audio CDs

Since upgrading to v. 7, there is no way to burn an audio CD of my playlists. I get a message that says either I can't burn music purchased from the iTunes store to CD, or a message that tells me my aiff files can't be burned to an mp3 cd. HELP.
    imac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Go to iTunes prefs>Advanced>Burning and set yur burning preferences. The only way to burn mix files types is to burn a Data CD/DVD.
To burn iTS purchases you can burn a data CD/DVD or an audio CD. They you can re-rip (import) the resulting audio CD in what ever format you have set in your importing preferences.
To burn AIFF to mp3 CD you will first have to convert the AIFF to an mp3.

  • Cannot read old CDs

I have all of my photos archived on CD - the earliest were burned in 2002 on an iBook. But I can't read any of these on my current iMac or MacBook. The disks are either ejected outright, or result in the perpetually spinning beach ball. Does anyone has any suggestions for how to rescue these files?

  • Cannot play audio CD with Creative MediaSource Pla

    Hi All,
I recently installed an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum soundcard and the Creative MediaSource Player software. I also purchased Creative 5. Analog speakers. Have everything configured pretty well now and really enjoying the enhanced sounds!
My problem is that I cannot play audio CDs using the MediaSource Player. I can see my DVD Player and CD Player in the MediaSource Player 'Source' column and a list of all the tracks on the CD. (no track info, just track numbers and length)
When I double-click on a track it cycles through all the tracks and then places an 'X' next to each one in the 'Now Playing' list window. If I have other music files from my harddri've available, it will start playing one of them.
I've tried different CDs with the same results.
I can use both the DVD and CD dri'ves to play an audio CD if I use any other player (Winamp, Windows Media Player, etc.) and use both dri'ves everyday for loading software and reading files. It will also read the demo DVD Audio disk that came with the card using the DVD-Audio player they provide so I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the hardware or drivers.
I've read all the info that came with the card and on the Creative Web site and have been through every configuration screen multiple times but haven't found a switch that turns this feature on.
Would like to get this working so I can standardize on one player that allows me to use all the advanced features of my new card.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this.
    Jay Perez

A good way to see what kinds of things you might need for something like vlc is to look at the optional dependencies for the package.  So if you do pacman -Qi vlc if the package is installed on your system already, or pacman -Si vlc if not yet installed, you can see in the output what kinds of optional dependencies there are.  Typically there is a short description of the extra functionality that the optional dependency can provide as well.
So in the case of vlc (and the libcdio optional dep) I get:
    $ pacman -Qi vlc
    Name           : vlc
    <SNIP>
Optional Deps  : avahi: for service discovery using bonjour protocol [installed]
                     <SNIP SOME MORE>
                     projectm: for ProjectM visualisation plugin
libcaca: for colored ASCII art video output [installed]
                     libgme: for libgme plugin [installed]
                     librsvg: for SVG plugin [installed]

  • T61 can't read audio CD's or MS Office install CD's

I have a T61 with T7700 processor and a DVD Multi drive in it. I have been in contact with Lenovo tech several times and have tried multiple diagnostic attempts to find the problem. The computer has already been back to Lenovo in Tennessee once and was returned to me with the exact same problem.
The computer cannot install MS Office 2007, 2003, or 1997. It cannot read audio CD's, yet it worked to burn a set of DVD system restore disks and worked to read and install the system from those disks.
I temporarily replaced the DVD with a known good identical one from my daughter's T61 and it exhibited the same problem. Lenovo sent out a new set of restore disks (the tech suspected a bad original image) and I installed a new clean copy of Vista Pro. The same problem persisted so the computer was sent in to Lenovo for repairs.
Lenovo (at my request) re-immaged the hard drive with a downgrade to XP Pro and removed a 3rd party ram stick from my computer stating that it was the cause of the problem. I received the computer back (very fast turnaround) and spent several hours updating all files on the XP install (as per their instructions) they provided to current. I then proceeded to try to install my MS Office. The drive would not recognize the disk. THEY FIXED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Today I had 3 conversations with a nice lady in Georgia and I ran a series of PC Doctor (F11 at boot) tests for her. CD drive always failed, one DVD test failed, but the "bad ram" passed all tests when I inserted it back into the computer. I burned 2 self -booting disks on my R61 (one CD and one DVD) for firmware update (from Lenovo's site as per the tech's recommendation) and tried to boot the computer from the CD. The computer failed to recognize the CD, but did recognize the DVD and booted into the update program. The update program confirmed that there was no firmware update available as I had learned from the Lenovo tech before the computer went in the first time.
It would seem the drive is bad, however, that does not explain why the same problems exists when I put a known working drive that can read those disks into the drive bay. If it was the drive, it should be able to read the disks with the replacement drive.
I suspect the motherboard is the source of the problem.
Now I am waiting for the 2nd pickup box to be delivered to send it back (with all documentation of what has been tried enclosed) to Lenovo for a second attempt at repairing this computer.
Does anyone out there have any ideas as to what the problem might be so I can include those ideas in the box and hopefully not have to send this in a 3rd time.

That sounds pretty logical to me.  If you've tried another drive and it works, and reinstalled Windows, I don't know what's left.  Perhaps there something wrong with the connector in the machine.  You should try your drive in your daugther's machine, just to rule out it out.
