Dr8-a via usb2 external box

I recently bought the msi dr8-a writer and have problems burning dvd's. I burnt the dvd that came with it without any problems, but when i tried to burn other media (ritek and bulkpaq) it keeps coming up with a "focus or tracking" error.
I have connected to a friends computer and it burns various media without any problems.
I can burn cd's through my laptop without problems, but it keeps giving me the above error message when burning dvd's.
My laptop spec is more than sufficient to run the writer.
Does anyone have any ideas ??

Well, yes, it's always a good idea to install a higher capacity internal hard disk. You can then get an external enclosure to house your original 250GB hd so that it can be used for backups and/or additional storage.
As far as the "Disk running too slow" message you're getting, I've never had that message and my external hd that has my iTunes library is 5400rpm. I would suggest that the problem is something else including (but not limited to) perhaps that your external hd may be on it's way out or perhaps too full.
How much free space is there on the external hd? Additionally, how much free space is there in your internal hd?
Have you done any software maintenance recently on both internal and external hard disks?

How do I move my library from Windows Vista hard drive that is now in an external box to a Windows 8 PC?

My old PC operating with Windows Vista failed to reboot, ironically but only coincidentally right after I installed the latest Itunes update a few weeks ago. It would not get past the DOS screen but getting that far I was at least able to conduct a diagnostics. The result was Hard Drive failure "BIOS-HD." I have a new PC with Windows 8 and have installed Itunes there as well. I removed the Hard Drive from the old computer and placed it in an external drive box. Fortunately, I can access everything on that drive including Itunes. How do I move my Itunes Library from my old hard drive in the external box and connected to my new PC, to the hard drive in the new PC? I see all sorts of instructions on line but none for the specific circumstance of the old hard drive in an external box and moving to a new PC with newer operating system (Windows 8). Thanks

Aside from checking here, I also Googled for an answer. Then I faced the problem on the Internet where stuff stays there forever and so I see solutions for previous and maybe obsolete versions of Itunes. I have no way of knowing if the seemingly sound advice was solved in later versions of Itunes. In one case there is a great YouTube video with a guy from Circuit City (now out of business). I found an extensive explanation that made my head explode with all the detail but I did understand enough to see that the solution they precribed has you go onto your new computer and make sure you rename your new hard drive to match the name of the hard drive from your old computer. That way Itunes on the new computer will be able to find it okay. These instructions also tell you to downlaod Itunes software on the new computer first and then move two different folders (I think one has the extension of .itl); one folder with the library and the other has the metadata--to the new computer. Then to confuse things I have seen instructions that also say to just move the files and they don't address the issue with the file names like turringtest said. Most discouraging is that all of the instructions I have talked about, explain what to do without ever addressing my specific situation where the old hard rive used to reside in an old computer and has an Vistas Operating System that apparently failed and caused me to get a new computer in the first place (I guess I could have loaded a new operating system but not sure if that would have wiped out my extensive files...also irrelevant to the discussion }:) Sorry). Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD). I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos. Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run. What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD. I am kind of concerned about this. This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year. I really don't want to lose any. Or is there something I am doing wrong? Or need to be aware of? Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Have a great day.

I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD. That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Capacity 749.3 GB. Available 562.53 GB. BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.

My iPad contents probably 75% of my iTunes library, but I'm scared to sync just in case in wipes the entire contents. I know I should of backed up but it was one of them jobs I never got round too (will def do now if my problem is solved)

If all of your media is from iTunes, don't worry about it. You can either transfer everything on your iPad from your iPad to your commputer; and/or you can redownload from iTunes all music and apps, and most of everything else.
If any of your media is from other sources, that's not so easily recoverable. If it's on your iPad, you can transfer it to your computer via a third-party application such as Senuti. (There are many alternatives to Senuti, some work just as well and are free.) Anything from non-iTunes sources and not on your iPad is completely gone, unless you have CDs or other physical media from which you obtained it stored somewhere.
At least now you know how important it is to have a backup.

Firewire 400 /USB2 External Hard Diskwon't mount anyomre

My Iomega firewire/USB2 external hard disk has decided to stop mounting.
When I start it up the light on the external HD comes on but th disk doesn't spin & the fan doesn't kick in. and it doesn't even appear when I use disk utility.
Here are the actions which I have tried so far- all of which haven't worked:
•Zapping/Resetting PRAM & SMC
•Unplugging all power, USB & firewire leads. waiting 5 mins and then restarting with only the keyboard & mouse leads and then plugging in the Firewire lead for the External HD.
• I have tried all available Firewire ports on my iMac & External HD with different leads.
• Tried the external HD on a different Mac.
When I tried to connect the the external HD using a USB2 lead, the drive actually starts spinning & the fan kicks in but it still doesn't mount on the desktop and doesn't appear in disk utility.
Any ideas?

it doesn't even appear when I use disk utility.
Contact the drive manufacturer for support or use a professional data recovery service. Nothing done in software alone will resolve your issue.

SHARING A LR4 CATALOG/PREVIEW VIA AN EXTERNAL DRIVE - A FAST ONE

Does anyone have experience sharing a LR4 catalog via an external drive. My stuff all come in at different times so we would not be accessing it simulteaneously. Trying to keep the maintenance time down as I spend a lot of time working on my catalog then having to syncronize and import the catalogs on the other MACs to reflect my changes to my local catalog. My thinking is to use an external drive and when the other team member comes in to use the external to work off of. We pass it back and forth.
Any pitfalls or problems I should be aware off???

If you plan on using the WD with the Mac after the iTunes transfer I would strongly recommend against WD. WD external HD's tend to be the most troublesome with Macs. If you intend to use the drive for backup using Time Machine or creating a bootable clone then I'd recommend a higher quality drive than WD. The drives I'd recommend in that case would be:
OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
LaCie d2 Quadra series
G-Tech G-DRIVE series
These are all high quality drives and enclosures with similar features. Personally I use the LaCie's however I would be happy to have OWC and G-Tech on my desk too. FWIW I've been using the LaCie's for 4 years and have 4 of them, all work perfectly and have never given me any trouble.

Are you asking if the phone logs when someone mutes it? No, I don't believe so. Or, are you asking if audio recording apps still record when the phone is muted? Why don't you use the included VoiceMemo app and test it?

just thought I'd jump on the band wagon on this one for some advice.
I have installed a X-FI Elite Pro in my PC running Vista Ultimate (not dual boot) and have some issues.
. My External box seems dead, the remote will not elicit any lights from it at all. I know the remote is fine because my other PC running Audigy ZS2 Pro's external box goes out in sympathy. Is there an issue with the Entertainment Centre Application, which seems absent from my install. Also When I try to install the app I get the "No IR Devices installed error".
I understand there are issues with Vista and Drivers.
2. There are about several different ways to set up for 7. speakers and I am runnoing Gigaworks 7.. The problem I am having here is I'm not getting surround sound. In one setup for speakers each speaker identifies correctly, but in most I do not get sound from rear speakers, and in another I don't get side speakers or rear. It seems they are mapping to front and centres, this also refers to the Sub. Running the Creative Diagnostic reports no errors, yet even it incorrectly identifies the speakers. The system was running fine on my other PC with Audigy ZS2 Pro. How can I resolve this one?
I really want to give Vista a run before scrapping the whole lot and going back to XP.

Via (for external connection) does not connect to copper plane

I am trying to place a PTH via for external connection. This via suppose to connect to the ground plane (net 0). However, I am having trouble to assign this via to net 0. It always leave a gap between the via and the copper plane.

Try this...
In the via properties window, to go the Via tab. Click the checkbox next to "Assume Net" and then select net 0 from the drop down list.

A few weeks ago, my Macbook pro(A1212) stopped displaying. It only showed a white screen, but you could get the display via an external monitor. A friend looked at it and we discovered a burnt Mosfet (SI3443DV) which was item Q9400 on the motherboard. He went and changed it but it only displayed for less than 5 minutes and it went back to the white screen. would you please advice on what to do since i am not in a financial position to take it for repairs at the apple store?

Forget it.
1: If it was tampered with, then it doesn't qualify for warranty or AppleCare.
2: Repairing it will incur a new expensive logicboard, because that's how they do things. Swap parts out.
3: No money, means no Mac.

How do I know if the external box works at all?
I've installed all software and drivers after the box was connected to the internal card with the bundeled cable.
I have no light on the external box.
Line-In and Headphone are dead.
What can be wrong?

There should be a light coming out of the Optical Out, if you remove the little black button/cover in it.
There should be the external cable of course going to the external dri'vebay, but you should also have a power cable connected internally. You can check the connections in the manual, there is a diagram that lists these and where to find them. If all the cables are connected properly and it still doesn't work, I would suggest trying to disconnect another device, such as a DVD-ROM or extra harddri've, in case the power supply isn't strong enough.
Otherwise it's possible there is a (hardware) problem with the dri've or one of the cables. Contact Customer Support for further assistance, and they'll be happy to go over the configuration with you to see what could be causing the problem.
