Drag a file from a folder to my desktop

When I try to drag a file from a folder to my desktop, it gets thrown to the upper left-hand corner, almost all of it 'off' the desktop, not where I tried to 'set' it...wuwt?

In ~/Library/Preferences: Trash helpviewer.plist and helpviewer.plist.lockfile
In ~/Library/Caches: Trash all folders
In Macintosh HD/Library/Caches: Trash all folders
Restart iMac, and then Empty Trash.
The credit goes to whoever posted this on the net… it worked for me

  • Dragging files from web pages to the desktop (To a specific spot!)

    I often need to drag images or url links directly from Safari or Firefox to my desktop.
    I have a two monitor setup and usually have a bunch of windows or applications open. Whenever I drag a file from the browser to the desktop, it gets sorted in the right monitor with the sorted icons...
    ...is there a way to force Mac to let me just drop the file where I drop it?
    I don't have any "arrange by" option selected in my Finder View Dropdown...
    Thanks for any help!

    Not that I know of... I have the same issue with the dual monitor setup and trying to drag from or to the desktop. Gets so cluttered sometimes that I have to hit F11 just to see what's going on, but then I'm not able to drag from the desktop to an open app because all of the windows are off the screen.
    Hmmm...
    I think OS X just puts all of your desktop items on the right edge of your default display no matter what, but I'd love to be proven wrong. Will keep an eye on this thread.
    I think the new "Spaces" feature in Leopard might help this situation. Maybe.

    OS X is all about keyboard shortcuts.
    To cut       cmd+x
    To copy     cmd+c
    To paste    cmd+v
    With the Mouse, hold command and drag to your destination.

  • Move files from one folder to another

    I am brand new to the application and have spent a ton of time googling various topics, but need some additional help. Seems easy enough, but I can't figure out how to do it...
    I would like to move pics from one folder to another. I can drag files from one folder to another, but they still reside in the original folder as well. Is there a way to cut and paste or a similar function to accomplish this move?
    Thanks.

    Hey, HawaiianHaole, as a multidecade Mac user, let me tell you, Aperture is about the worst example of Mac-iness one could imagine. Ironic, as it's (of course) made by Apple. But it is so inflexible, and insists so vociferously on making the user learn its peculiar interface conventions it reminds me most of something out of that famous company in Redmond.
    Want your Projects in an order you choose? Sorry! Want to arrange your windows so you can see your list of chat buddies while you're working in Aperture? Nope, can't do it! Aging eyes have trouble reading tiny grey type on a grey background? Hey buddy, it was your choice to grow old, don't blame us!
    But all is not lost. Aperture has gotten considerably better of late (versions up to 2.0 were fundamentally unusable in many ways) and will hopefully continue to improve. (ie Maybe they'll fix the printing thing...)
    Please don't make Aperture the basis for your judgement of the Mac OS. Many long time Mac users are having as much trouble with Aperture as you. Mac OSX has significantly reduced customizability but at the benefit of much improved stability and indeed usability. Old school Mac users had to learn to accept this, which most did. You'll hear people talk about the "Way of the Steve". As irksome as Aperture can be, you'll actually have a better time of it if you adopt the Way of the Steve, and accept that you can't do things the way you might want to. This is imho antithetical to the original Mac many of us knew and loved, but it's the way things are today, so we mostly shut up and take it. You can fight with your software all day, or just accept that there are ways you have to adopt and adapt to them.
    Welcome to the Bright Side, hope your Mac experience improves.

    Is there a way to move files from one folder to another without copying and pasting and then going back to delete the original?  The cut and paste function is not available and there's no "move to" function.  Am I missing something?  It was so easy with Windows.

    Drag the files, or press Option when pasting them; this accesses the Move To function.

    how to move downloaded files from download folder to other relevant folder or how to download files in relevant folders other than download folder

    Just drag the file from the Download folder to the folder of your choice in Finder. If you are using Safari you can designate a new default download destination in Safari>Preferences>General tab, 'Save Downloads to...'. Other browsers should have a similar option in their preferences.

  • Why doesn't the original document I'm dragging and dropping from one folder to another move?

    Why doesn't the original document I'm dragging and dropping from one folder to another move?
    What's happening is the computer is creating a duplicte of the document and placing it in the new location with a new creation date.  The original document I wanted to drag and drop into a new location remains where it started as the "original" document and the new copy has this little arrow protruding up from the lower left of its icon.
    At first I thought it was an alias, but it's a copy of the document I thought I was dragging and dropping.
    What gives here?
    Steve

    That arrow indicates it is a linik to the original, though. This happens if you wish to drag files, for which you do not have permissions to do this operation, e.g. from Library or System folder. I am pretty sure you do not accomplish this operation from/to folders like Desktop or Documents; if so, there is a problem with your system.

  • Dragging photo files from Entourage into iPhoto 09

    I recently upgraded to iPhoto 09 running on Snow Leopard. I believe I was previously running 10.4.9? At any rate, I can no longer drag photo files from an email in Entourage and drop them into the iPhoto icon in the menu bar for import. Now it seems I need to save the files first and then drag and drop. Is there a way to avoid this extra step?

    I realize iPhoto is not a file manager, I've gotten over that part. At this point I would just like it to recognize different folders as different events. I feel like that is a little feature that would go a long way, not only for migrating libraries like in this case, but also in the future.
    I will often create separate folders within my camera's menus for different events, so that when I import the photos it makes it easier to distinguish the different events, even if they span multiple days. If only there was a checkbox next to "imported items from finder" called "treat folders as events when importing" that applied recursively to folders imported.
    Update: I took a leap of faith and dragged a portion of my library into iPhoto (after unchecking that "Autosplit Imported items from Finder" checkbox) and it did exactly what I was hoping it would! Turns out it does apply recursively, which is really handy. I can just drag my entire "Pictures" folder with all of my photos nicely organized into events by folder into iPhoto, and it recognizes each folder as a separate event without having to drag each folder separately! hooray! I ended up doing so with the "Photos" icon selected in the sidebar, I don't know if that made a difference or not. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

  • Importing All the files from a folder at a time

    Hi....
    Can any body tell me how to import set of files from a folder into IDM.
    It is becoming very difficult to import the files one after other....
    Waiting for Reply....
    Thanks in advance..........

    We used an ant script to build an XML file that will contain the files. The script is configured to use the folder structure of our CVS repository.
    We'd checkout our XML module and then run the build script and import the resulting init file.
    Code to the script is below -- caveat emptor. You'll need to change the folder structure to suit your own environment.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

  • How to Copy an Image File from a Folder to another Folder

    i face the problem of copying an image file from a folder to another folder by coding. i not really know which method to use so i need some reference about it. hope to get reply soon, thx :)

    Try this code. Make an object of this class and call
    copyTo method.
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class FileUtil
    extends File {
    public FileUtil(String pathname) throws
    NullPointerException {
    super(pathname);
    public void copyTo(File dest) throws Exception {
    File parent = dest.getParentFile();
    parent.mkdirs();
    FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(this); //
    Open the source file
    FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(dest); //
    Open the destination file
    byte[] buffer = new byte[4096]; // Create an input
    buffer
    int bytes_read;
    while ( (bytes_read = in.read(buffer)) != -1) { //
    Keep reading until the end
    out.write(buffer, 0, bytes_read);
    in.close(); // Close the file
    out.close(); // Close the file
    This is poor object-oriented design. Use derivation only when you have to override methods -- this is just
    a static utility method hiding here.

  • Is it possible to pickup a specific file from a folder?

    Hi
    I am wondering whether it is possible to pick a specific file from a folder. I have a shape where I have got a filename and I need to look for it in a folder.
    Is that possible?
    And how can I achieve this? The next step is to pick the file up and transfer it to another location. So basically in pseudo code I need to ask my defined folder with a filename as parameter. Get the file and move it to another folder.
    Suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks

    Assuming you are using orchestration, you could
    create an assembly, install it in the GAC, add a reference to it in your BTS
    project, and call it from an Expression shape to resolve the receive
    location. You would only really need one static method in a class. Be sure
    to add a reference to Microsoft.BizTalk.ExplorerOM.dll.
    Example:
    using Microsoft.BizTalk.ExplorerOM;
    namespace Phil
    public class OrchestrationHelpers
    public static string ResolveReceiveLocationName(string
    inboundTransportLocation, string receivePortName)
    BtsCatalogExplorer bts = new BtsCatalogExplorer();
    bts.ConnectionString =
    "SERVER=localhost;DATABASE=BizTalkMgmtDb;Trusted_Connection=True;Network
    Library=DBMSSOCN;"
    foreach (ReceiveLocation location in
    bts.ReceivePorts[receivePortName].ReceiveLocations)
    if (location.Address == inboundTransportLocation) return location.Name;
    return null;
    In your Expression shape within your orchestration, assuming a message
    called "MyMessage" and a string variable "receiveLocationName":
    receiveLocationName =
    Phil.OrchestrationHelpers.ResolveReceiveLocationName(MyMessage(BTS.InboundTransportLocation),
    MyMessage(BTS.ReceivePortName));
